Pairings: Haou x Yubel (human)

Johan stood next to Haou as the guards dragged in a tortured man to the center of the room. The bluenette could tell the former light follower was on his last stand; there was no fight in him.
"Marcus, citizen from the Western village in the Light World dimension, you're hereby sentenced to death for the attempt of kidnapping and harming Prince Jaden Kurosawa. How do you plea?" Guardian Baou stated.
"…guilty…I allowed the light…to control me…in my weaken state," replied Marcus. "I knew my family…was followers…but I was in…denial…"
Haou stared at Marcus' dull eyes before walking over to Baou and handed him a vial with a clear liquid. "End his suffering."
Baou nodded and followed his king's orders.
Johan stood there speechless before running over to the brunette. He frowned, "You rarely give the Reincarnation potion to prisoners. What changed?"
"…Jaden's compassion," replied Haou.
Meanwhile at the library, Chazz couldn't stop twitching his eye upon seeing Jaden's teacher for politics. The man looked just like Crawler, but his personality was completely opposite. Cronus had patience when Jaden didn't understand or praised him with excitement.
"Read chapters five to seven. Have a summarize paper about the two chapters – with your own words, Prince Jaden and be ready to discuss it, understand?" Cronus instructed.
Jaden sighed, "Yes, sir."
"Boy! If the Prince doesn't finish his assignment, it's under your head!" Cronus snapped.
"Got it," said Chazz, quickly. Cronus nodded and left the library. "This is too bizarre!" he shouted and slammed his hands onto the table, "Who's next? Sheppard?! Banner?!"
"Um, well," murmured Jaden.
Chazz had a confused look on his face when the doors open and came in was a look alike of their former Professor Banner…including a black cat in his arms. The former Obelisk screamed before falling off his chair.
"Oh, is he alright, Prince Jaden-nya?"
"Yea, he is Professor Daitokuji. So, which subject we will be discussing?" Jaden said.
Daitokuji smiled, "Taxes. Let's start with the Oasis taxes…"
Jaden made a face while Chazz pulled himself up.
After an hour, Jaden and Jesse were heading to the training ground while Chazz was following behind them. Jaden warned Chazz who his sword instructor was.
"So, let me get this straight, a look alike Crawler and Banner are your tutors while a look alike Sheppard is your sword instructor!" Chazz said. Jaden sheepishly nodded. He gritted his teeth, "Top of that, your fiancée looks like Alexis! Who else has a doppelganger?!"
"Um, not sure. But Haou wants to make sure the Light of Destruction is gone for good before announcing my return," replied Jaden.
"Is this the same spirit that controlled the students and Sartorius last year?" Chazz asked.
"I believe so, but you can't tell my brother!" Jaden said before frowning. "He'll never allow me to return back to Duel Academy with you guys!"
Chazz flinched since they did tell Haou about Jaden's victories against the Shadow Riders and the Light spirit. Now he understands why Haou requested a duel. It will show how strong they are in order to protect Jaden. 'Jim, you better win,' he thought as they reached to the training grounds.
There waiting in the middle of the grounds was a younger version of Sheppard with two swords on hand. The brunette walked over to him while Jesse guided Chazz to the side. Not too far, Alexis who was gathering some water watched Jaden with a slight blush. Syrus and Hassleberry were in awe seeing their best friend through the second-floor window.
At lunch, Haou and Johan had their lunch sent to the study while Jaden, Jesse and the others were eating at the dinner hall.
"I always imagine how people back then used to live without technology," said Alexis before making a face, "Now I know…"
Syrus and Hassleberry nodded, tiredly.
"Well, I was quite alright working with Mary," said Atticus, happily.
"You got an easy job, pretty-boy while the rest of us got our hands dirty," said Hassleberry then glared towards Chazz, "Actually, you and Princeton got the easiest jobs!"
Atticus had his hands up in a surrender manner while Chazz smirked.
"Aw, come on now guys – hey, best of luck on your duel Jim. I hear my brother's quite a strong duelist," said Jaden. Jim simply just nodded.
-Training Grounds, dusk-
Jim was guided to the grounds by a guard and hand him his duel disk. He looked around to see the others standing by the sides with Aqua. The Australian turned to see Haou with a black duel disk and by his side were Johan and a few duel monster spirits.
"This is a Challenger duel. The challenger, Jim Cook against the King of Oasis, Haou Kurosawa," announced Skull Knight. "Note damages will be felt when your monsters are destroyed – begin!"
Alexis and the others were slightly worried, but they can't turn back now.
"Duel!" shouted Jim and Haou.
Jim: 4000
Haou: 4000
"I'll go first if you don't mind!" Jim said, drawing his card. "I summon Shell Knight (0/2000) in defense mode. When Shell Knight is successfully summoned, I can inflict 500 points of damage to the opponent!"
Pieces of the armor from the monster went straight to Haou, but the young king was unfazed by the attack while his life points dropped.
Jim: 4000
Haou: 4000 – 500 = 3500
"I set a card. I end my turn," finished Jim.
"Impressive," murmured Aqua. "No one has ever damaged Haou in their first turn."
Jaden grinned for Jim success while the others cheered.
"Draw," said Haou, drawing his card. "I activate the fusion card, Dark Fusion! I use Elemental Hero Avian and Elemental Hero Burstinatrix to fusion-summon Evil Hero Inferno Wing (2100/1200)!"
Hassleberry widened his eyes, "E-Evil Hero?!"
"Oh, right. You guys don't know," said Jaden. "My brother uses a dark version of my Elemental Heroes. Inferno Wing is Flame Wingman's dark counterpart."
"The same with my older brother," said Jesse. "He uses a dark version of the Crystal Beasts."
Alexis and the others dropped their mouths in shock.
"Attack Inferno Wing!" Haou ordered.
"Sakuretsu Armor, activate! It destroys your attacking monster!" Jim said.
"Inferno Wing was fusion summoned by Dark Fusion, she cannot be destroyed by magic or trap cards this turn," explained Haou.
"What?" Jim said as his trap card turn useless. Inferno's attack continued and destroyed Jim's defense monster, losing 100 life points.
Jim: 4000 – 100 = 3900
Haou: 3500
"I don't get it. Jim's monster was in defense mode so why did it inflict damaged?" Alexis asked.
"…cause it inflicts damage while it's still in defense mode," said Atticus.
"You're correct," replied Haou. "Also, when Inferno Wing destroys a monster in battle and sends it to the graveyard, you take damage equal to the attack or defense points of that monster depending on which is higher – Hell Backfire!"
Inferno created a fire wall, causing Jim to scream in pain and lost 2000 life points.
Jim: 3900 – 2000 = 1900
Haou: 3500
"Jim!" Alexis shouted. She looked over to Aqua, "He's not going to…"
Aqua shook her head, "Haou will stop the duel if your friend gets too injured to continue. He'll send your friend to the infirmary to be healed."
Syrus and Hassleberry sigh in relief.
"So, he shows mercy to worthy duelists," stated Axel before frowning, "But to enemies…"
Jaden sighed, "Yes, he'll kill them without hesitation."
Alexis and the others widen their eyes. They watched Jim slowly got up and tries to study himself while holding onto the pain.
"I'm not finished…my turn!" Jim said, drawing his card. "I activate Fossil Fusion! By removing Shell Knight in my graveyard, and removing Burstinatrix from your graveyard, I can fusion summon Fossil Warrior Skull Bone (2000/800)! And next, I pay half my life points to activate Time Stream!"
Jim: 1900 → 950
Haou: 3500
"This allows me to evolve Fossil Warrior Skull Bone into Fossil Warrior Skull Knight (2400/1100)! Attack Skull Knight!" Jim said. The knight slashed Inferno, destroying it and Haou lost 300 life points.
Jim: 950
Haou: 3500 – 300 = 3200
"Next, the quick play spell, Half Life!" Jim continued. "It returns a monster destroyed in battle this turn with its attack points halved and effect negated."
'Now, why would he do that?' Haou thought as Inferno Wing returned to his field with half of its attack points.
Inferno Wing (2100 → 1050/1200)
"Next, the effect of Skull Knight activates! He can attack all monsters on the opponent's field!" Jim said. The knight attacked again, destroying Inferno again and Haou lost 1350 life points.
Jim: 950
Haou: 3200 – 1350 = 1850
"Draw," said Haou. "I activate the magic card, O – Oversoul! It allows me to special summon an Elemental Hero from my graveyard. Return, Elemental Hero Avian (1000/1000)."
A slight dark version of Avian appeared in Haou's field.
"Next, I sacrifice Avian to summon Evil Hero – Malicious Edge (2600/1800)!" Haou said.
"But he's a level seven monster. You need two tributes to summon him," stated Jim.
"It's Malicious Edge's effect. When the opponent has a monster on their side of the field, Malicious Edge can be summoned with one tribute," explained Haou as Jim gritted his teeth. "Go, Malicious Edge!"
The monster attacked by throwing multiple needles, destroying Jim's monster and Jim lost 200 life points.
Jim: 950 – 200 = 750
Haou: 1850
"My turn," said Jim, drawing his card. "I activate the field spell, Sacred Defense Barrier!" The area around them turned into a meadow with a light right around them. "Next, I summon Uluru's Guardian (0/2300) in defense mode. The effect of Sacred Defense Barrier activates! When a Rock type monster is summoned, a protection counter is placed on it and protects it from being destroyed by battle or card effect."
Jim's monster was surrounded by light.
"Draw," said Haou. "…attack Malicious Edge."
"What? Why is he still attacking?" Alexis wondered.
Malicious attacked, but didn't destroy Jim's monster, however Jim still loses 300 life points.
Jim: 750 – 300 = 450
Haou: 1850
"If Malicious Edge attacks a monster in defense mode, the difference is dealt as damage to the opponent," explained Haou.
Jim gritted his teeth, "I haven't given up yet – Draw! Set one card. Turn end."
Alexis frowned, "Jim looks like he's about to collapse."
"His physical strength is almost at its limit," said Axel, worriedly. "He took massive damage. I'm not sure how long he can hold up."
Jaden and Jesse looked at each other before looking over at Jim with worry.
"Draw!" Haou said. "I summon Evil Hero Infernal Gainer (1600/0)."
On Haou's side, his advisers were chuckling. Skilled Dark Magician smirked, "His defense monster no longer has that silly protection."
"If Infernal Gainer attacks, King Haou will be the victor," said Skull Knight, smugly.
"…you have to give him some credit," murmured Johan. He crossed his arms, "No one has ever lasted this long with a duel against Haou. Most would've forfeited by now."
The advisers agreed, silently.
"Go, Malicious Edge!" Haou ordered. Malicious attacked, destroying Jim's monster and Jim loses 300 life points. Not only that, but the attack sent Jim onto the ground.
Jim: 450 – 300 = 150
Haou: 1850
"Infernal Gainer, attack directly," said Haou.
"Jim!" shouted everyone.
"I'm not…defeated…activate trap card," said Jim, slowly getting up. He winced, "This card…allows me to…special summon Uluru the Guardian Spirit (0/2500) in defense mode."
"Clever boy," murmured Chaos Sorcerer.
"King Haou's other monster has lower points," said Skull Knight.
"Not only that, but the monster will count as a Rock type so it will gain that protection counter, thanks to his field spell," said Johan.
"…I activate Infernal Gainer's effect," said Haou.
"What?!" Jim said.
"By removing Infernal Gainer from play for two turns, I can have Malicious Edge attack a second time for this turn," explained Haou.
Infernal Gainer disappeared from Haou's field and Malicious Edge gain the ability to attack again. Malicious throws his needles to Uluru, but it wasn't destroyed since the protection counter, however the inflict damage was still dealt with and Jim loses 100 life points. At the end of Haou's end phase, Uluru the Guardian Spirit effect ends and destroys itself.
Jim: 150 – 100 = 50
Haou: 1850
"This is bad! This is bad!" Syrus said, dramatically. He ran his hands over his hair, "Jim's life points are down to 50! 50!"
"Will you calm down solider!" Hassleberry said. "I bet Jim has something in his hand."
"Yea, there's no need to worry, Sy," assured Jaden before frowning a bit. 'Why are they so kin for Jim to win? It's not like he's going to die…unless there's a reason for Jim to win this duel.'
"My turn," said Jim. "I activate the magic card, Fossil Hammer! This destroys the monster with the highest level on your side of the field!" A fossil like hammer destroyed Haou's Malicious Edge. "Next, you pick a monster with a level lower than Malicious Edge in your graveyard and special summon it in attack mode."
"I chose Elemental Hero Avian (1000/1000)," said Haou as the dark hero reappeared on his field.
"Then, I summon Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo (1200/1300) in attack mode. And since a Rock type monster was summoned, the effect of Sacred Defense Barrier activates!" Jim said as the monster was surrounded by a light. "Fossil Dyna attack Avian!"
The fossil dinosaur like monster attacked, destroying Avian and Haou lost 200 life points.
Jim: 50
Haou: 1850 – 200 = 1650
"This activates Pachycephalo's effect. When it attacks and destroys a monster, it switches to defense mode," said Jim. "Until the end of your end phase, it gains the defense points equal to the attack of the destroyed monster…I end my turn."
Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo (1200/1300 → 2300)
"Draw," said Haou. "I activate Dark Fusion to fuse Sparkman and Clayman."
"He has another one?!" Atticus said.
Jaden grinned, sheepishly, "Sort of like me with my multiple fusions."
"Appear Evil Hero – Lightning Golem!" Haou said as a dark version of Thunder Giant appeared. "I activate Lightning Golem's effect! Each turn, I'm allowed to destroy one of your monsters – Voltic Ball!"
Jim gritted his teeth, knowing it would destroy the protection counter.
"Lightning Golem attack," ordered Haou as Golem destroyed Pachycephalo.
"My turn…I activate the magic card, Miracle Rupture. I send a Rock type monster from my deck to my graveyard then I shuffle and allows me to draw a card," said Jim, praying it can turn this duel around. "Draw – I remove Fossil Warrior Skull Bone and Fossil Warrior Skull Knight from play…"
Suddenly, the ground started to shake, and fire lava surrounded Jim. Alexis and the others had to move a bit to avoid the moving ground minus Johan who stood by Haou's side.
"This allows me to special summon Gaia Plate the Earth Giant (2800/2600)," said Jim as a giant rock monster appeared on his field. "Gaia Plate's effect, it can half the attack of one of your monsters."
Lightning Golem (2400/1500 → 1200/750)
"Attack Gaia Plate!" Jim ordered. The giant rock monster destroyed Haou's monster and Haou lost 1600 life points.
Jim: 50
Haou: 1650 – 1600 = 50
'Impressive, this boy was able to lower my life points this much,' thought Haou, looking over at his knight and advisers. The looks of his advisers' faces were speechless while Johan was slightly impressed. As he was about to draw his card, Demise – King of Armageddon came rushing in.
"My lord," Demise flinched upon seeing Haou's glare, "I-It's Yubel! She's attacking the village! Demanding for Prince Jaden!"
Haou and Johan widen their eyes. The older brunette deactivates his duel disk and addressed to Jim, "Change of plans. Show me your strengths by protecting my brother."
Jim widened his eyes, but hearing the seriousness in Haou's voice, he nodded. "Don't worry, she's not getting her hands-on Jaden; mark my words."

The duel was about to end, but suddenly Yubel made her appearance. What is Haou and the others going to do? Fight the person he once loved or finish her? Until the next chapter!
