During the night, Ajax was tossing and turning in his sleeping bag. Near him, the compass's gears click as they slowly move inside.
"MMmmm. Nnn. Nug…" grunted Ajax as he slept.
Inside Ajax's dream…
Inside a temple, the compass sits on a single pedestal. From the darkness, a pair of slender, black fingerless gloved, hands reach out to grasp the gold disc. The hands lift the disc and a figure look down at the gold dome surface. On the gold surface, a pair of yellow eyes and a red gem glow are reflected. The figure smiles. "Finally, we've found it," said a woman's voice.
Ajax continued to toss as the dream continues…
The woman pulls the compass into the darkness. Just then, the sound of a gun click is heard. Then chaos, gunshots are heard, and bullets fly as a fight breaks out in the darkness. Battle cries and deranged laughter echo in the temple. Fists hitting flesh. Lightening illuminating the dark temple. The sound of a guitar can be heard with sinister laughter and monstrous roars.
The compass flies and hits the ground with a loud clank. It bounces on the ground before landing. The compass opens and Ajax could barely see all the small stones surrounding the compass face. Only sixteen symbols could be seen before the battle hits the compass once more.
Another figure grabs the compass as it flees the battle, but the battle continued, and the compass was sent flying once more. Bullets hit the golden surface leaving dents in it, balls of fire come out of the darkness and hit the compass sending it bouncing into and off the temple's walls. As the fight goes on, more damage is done to the mysterious artifact.
The compass is sent to the middle of battle where it is hit but a massive number of bullets, fire, and energy. The compass stays in midair as a blue light emits from it. The stones and compass needle start to spin at an alarming rate. From it, sparks of lightning shot out like roots from a tree, electricity sparking through the temple, swirling vortexes begin to form from these roots of light. Suddenly, the stones fire out from the compass and ricochet around the room like tiny bullets. The stones hit the vortexes and disappear within them.
"NO!" shouted the woman as she tries to get the compass back, but a shockwave sends her back.
The light from the compass fades as it closes and falls. The roots of light begin to fade, and the vortexes disappear save for the one under the compass. The compass falls into the final vortex as it closes. Ajax watches as the compass travels through the vortex.
"Ajax!" yells a girl's voice. Ajax looks around but sees no one. "Ajax! Ajax!" Ajax looks for the voice, but he can't find it. The compass opens to Ajax, the needle spinning wildly. "AAAAAAJJJJJJJAAAAAAXXXXXX!"
"YO! WAKE UP AJAX!" yells Woody.
Ajax jolts awake. "AH! What is? What's…?" Ajax is breathing heavily as he is trying to process what just happened.
"Dude, you were tossing and turning up a storm," said Woody.
"Are you ok?" asked Opus.
"Yeah. Yeah. Just a weird dream," answered Ajax.
"Ok," said Opus.
They both notice a weird scar on his left arm. Woody was about to ask about it, but Opus stops him from doing so. They pack up their stuff and head out of the room.
"Come on, Olette and Roxas are waiting for us," said Ajax as they leave the manor.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
Outside the manor, they pass by the Duke. The Duke sees them and smiles. "Hold up there, gents, before you go, why don't you take a look at my new specials?"
"Loved to but we need to be somewhere," answered Ajax.
"Yeah. Besides, didn't we spend enough money on you yesterday?" asked Woody.
"Oh, but I have something special for you Mr. Woodpecker. A new weapon, and a free materia," said Duke.
"A weapon for me? Well, why didn't you say so? Show me," Woody bounced over to the Duke.
The Duke smiles as he brings out a pair of leather gloves, on the right glove, two slots for materia could be seen. "These gloves have been imbued with a little bit of magic. They will make your beak stronger."
"How are gloves supposed to make my beak stronger?"
"Well, I couldn't very well make something to cover your beak. It would make breathing difficult."
"He does have a point," chimed Opus.
Woody sighs in agreement. "Ok. What's the charge?"
"A mere 250 munny. Of course, you do get this free materia as an added bonus." The Duke makes a yellow materia appear and he balances it on his hand.
"Sweet! What does it do?"
"Hmhm. You will just have to find out."
"Alright. Give it here."
"Nah uh uh. Money first, product after."
"Ajax, can I have the munny?"
"Well… 250 is basically half of what we have left, and we already spent a lot with Duke yesterday," said Ajax.
"Then how's about 200? Can't say that isn't a fairer price?"
"Come on. Please Ajax. You and Opus got cool stuff. I want something too," pleaded Woody.
Ajax sighs. "Yeah. I guess you're right. We'll take the gloves and materia for 200."
"Excellent. You made a wise investment," said Duke with a wide grin on his face.
Ajax gives Duke the munny and the merchant gives Woody the gloves and materia.
"Oh boy. Oh boy. Oh boy. So, what does this magic bobble do?" asked Woody.
"It is the materia containing the command of Access. It will come in very handy."
Woody's smile disappeared upon hearing that. "Oh. Then I don't think I want this one. You take it Ajax." Woody tosses the yellow orb to Ajax.
"You sure you don't want it?"
"Nah. I want one of the cooler ones."
"Um, if Woody doesn't want it, then can I, have it?" asked Opus.
"Sure. Does this mean you're going with us?" asked Ajax.
"Yeah. I wanted to leave this world to look for my friends. You guys got something that can help me do that. So, if you'll have me, then I want to come along."
"Sure thing. It'll be nice to have more friends." Opus smiles at this.
"Welcome to the group Opus. We should get a team name," suggested Woody.
"What would we even call ourselves?" asks Opus.
"We can figure that out later. Now we need to meet up with Roxas and Olette," reminded Ajax.
"Yeah. Let's go see Ajax's girlfriend," teased Woody.
"Will you stop that? Besides, she's out of my league," said Ajax.
"Can't hurt to try. But let's go," says Woody as he tries on the gloves, and they fit like they should. "Nice."
"Bye Duke. We'll make sure to come back and visit when we can," said Ajax as he waves goodbye to Duke.
"Hold up my dear friends, I should explain something to you regarding your weapons," said Duke.
"And what would that be?" asked Ajax.
"Your weapons have a special magic known as 'Weapon Skills.' They are abilities linked to a specific weapon. Become proficient at these skills and they are yours forever."
"What happens if we change weapons without becoming proficient?"
"Then you don't get to use the skill when you use a different weapon."
"Ah. So, if we use the skill and become good at it, then we keep it. Is that right?"
"Correct."
"Cool. What can we do?" asked Woody.
"You Woody can use the ability known as Pecking Barrage. This will allow you to peck an enemy many times with greater power."
"Cool."
"As for Opus, he has the Critical Shot ability. You can use it to find an enemy's weak point so your attacks can be a little more effective. A slingshot is not much but in the right hands, it can be a powerful weapon and tool."
"Ok. Thanks Duke."
"Anytime. Oh, and one more thing, any abilities you learn from weapons or naturally will need badge points to use them."
"Badge Points?" Ajax raising an eyebrow.
"Do not worry about the name. All you need to know is that with badge points or BP, you can equip many abilities. Many can be useful under the right circumstances; you just need enough BP to equip them."
"Ok. How do we equip them?"
"Tap the crystal on your bracelet," Ajax does so, and the status screen appears. "Find the tab labeled abilities." Ajax finds it and sees a list of him and his friends. "Select Ajax." Ajax does so and out pop up a screen with a new list. On the list is two things: Mighty Whack and Dodge Roll. Mighty Whack is highlighted in blue while Dodge Roll is in grey. Ajax also sees something in the corner: BP 1 / 2. "This is Ajax's Ability screen. From here you can see all the abilities you know and how many BP you have left to assign. Right now, you have only Mighty Whack equipped since it is your weapon skill. Equipped abilities are highlighted in blue, unequipped abilities are in grey."
"Sounds simple enough."
"Now select Dodge Roll," Ajax does so, and it asks if he wants to equip or not. Ajax equips the ability. "Very good. Now you know how to do the dodge roll."
"I don't feel any different."
"Maybe not now but in battle, you'll know how to use it and you will be happy you had it. Give it a try by rolling around here."
"Ok…" Ajax looks at the open area in front of him and gets ready. He readies himself for a leap by moving back and forth like he is about to jump. After a minute, he leaps and rolls… right into his face. "OW!" Ajax rolls over and nurses his head.
"Maybe try it again."
Ajax nods and gets up to go again. He stands up and leaps again and does a slight roll then just keeps rolling, running into Woody and Opus.
"WHOA!"
"Yipes!"
Hey!"
They were now a great big pile.
"Uuuuhhhhh…."
"Keep practicing. You will get the hand of it eventually," said Duke.
"Thanks. Anything else?"
"No. That was the last thing."
"Ok. Now let's head to town and meet with the others," said Ajax and the others nodded.
"Take care gentlemen and let adventure guide you," said Duke with a smile on his face.
The four friends head off into the woods to head into town.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
The four exit the forest and into the underground waterway. Ajax is looking at the bracelet.
"What's on your mind?" asks Woody.
"Oh, n-nothing. Just, I am having doubts this is all real right now," said Ajax.
"Why you think that?" asks Opus.
"Well, you two are walking talking birds. One of which is a cartoon character I remember watching. Animals don't talk where I come from so my brain is telling me that this might not be real." Woody pecks Ajax's head. "OW!"
"That feel real?"
"Yeah! It hurts. Why did you do that?"
"If it didn't hurt, then this is not real. If it hurts, then this is all real. Simple as that."
"I don't think that's how it works."
"Look, what Woody is trying to say is that yes this is unusual, but you should relax and enjoy the ride."
"Yeah. What Opus said."
Ajax slowly nods as they climb out of the waterway.
"Look all I'm trying to say is that I keep feeling like something is o…" Ajax stop as he comes face to face with tall metal man with glowing red eyes. It has a cylinder head and body made of metal. A small metal plant with two leaves on top of the head. Below the red eyes sprouts a pointed bolt nose. Ajax could see ball joints exposed like a primitive action figure. Chains hang from the metal man's elbows, hips, and ankles. Instead of hands, large metal balls take its place at the end of the metal man's arms.
The metal man looked at Ajax with curiosity, red eyes glaring down on the young man. The thing moved away with the movement of one of those audio animatronics you would find in a pizza place. Ajax slowly started to back away from the metal man, clearly spooked. The metal man then moved and started doing the robot, dancing on a street corner as people watched.
"Hey, check it out. A man made of metal," said Woody as he perches himself on the metal man's head and knocks on the forehead. However, the metal man just keeps on dancing. "Is there a street fair happening today?"
"Not that I know of. I would have seen advertisements for it," said Opus.
Ajax just looks at the metal man as he continues to back away. He grips his staff tightly. Sophia follows him.
"Yo! Ajax! You ok? You look like you've seen a ghost," said Woody.
Ajax says nothing.
"Ajax?" asked Opus.
"Can we just leave now?" said Ajax in a fearful tone.
"Dude. Relax. It's just a dancing robot," said Woody.
"I still just want to leave. Let's just get to the meeting place," said Ajax as he turned around and fast walked away.
"What's his problem?" said Woody.
"I don't know but he was spooked," said Opus.
"Awww. Don't worry about it. That man just came up on Ajax unexpectedly. Anyone would be spooked."
"Yeah…"
They follow Ajax to the sandlot.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
They walk through the sandlot, and they see the hole Opus's glider made into the wall. Opus grimaces at the sight.
"Yikes. We sure did some damage with that glider. Huh guys?" said Woody.
Opus rubs his arm in embarrassment.
"Hey. It could have been worse. At least no one got hurt," said Ajax. Sophia goes to comfort Opus and the penguin pets the dog.
"Thanks," said Opus.
"Hey. We'll help you fly one day. I promise," said Ajax. Opus smiles at Ajax. "Now, let's go see Roxas and Olette." The two birds nod and they head for the place Olette says the usual spot is.
Before they can go down the alley, a small figure stops them. A short, squat boy with inky black skin, glowing yellow eyes, and no other discernible facial features. He wears a sky-blue coat with elaborate, dark blue stitching at the edges, secured by a tan string tied around four yellow buttons, though still opens to expose his pitch-black torso. The white cuffs of this jacket are oversized and sport similar lining to the rest of the jacket, though brown instead of blue, and the sleeves cover half of his hands, which are themselves covered by brown gloves. The jacket also sports two large pockets on the front, each kept closed by a vertical white strap connected to a sky-blue button. His pants are green and held up by a brown belt, and his shoes are brown with several raised tan stripes. His large, tan hat resembles a face, with a large open zipper resembling a mouth in the middle of the hat, and two 'eyes' just above this, shaped like a pale green star on the left and an oblong shape on the right. Above this, the hat flops over and curls. Near the brim is a wide brown strap, and on one side is a tear or seam that has been stitched with brown cord.
"Aww. Hello little guy. What's your name?" asked Ajax.
"Vivi," answered the small guy.
"Nice to meet you Vivi. I'm Ajax and these are my friends Sophia, Woody, and Opus," everyone waves at him.
"Oh. So, you are the new guys. Follow me," said Vivi as he goes into the alley. They follow the little guy into a small alcove under the train tracks.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
Inside they find Roxas and Olette along with five other people.
"Hey. You guys made it," said Roxas.
"Thanks to Vivi," said Ajax as Vivi waves.
"Thank you Vivi," said Olette. Vivi takes a seat nearby. "Welcome to the Usual Spot. This is the rest of the Twilight Crew. Hayner, Pence, Xion, Lea, and Isa." They all wave at Ajax and his friends.
"Sup." Hayner is a young man with brown eyes, dark eyebrows, and spiky brown hair. Baggy blue pants, a white shirt with a black skull, a black vest with red and black plaid, same with the shoes.
"Hiya." Pence is a rather heavy-set boy, heavier than Ajax, with brown eyes, black hair, and eyebrows. He wears a black headband, an orange bandana around his neck. A black and white shirt with the image of 'Dog Street.' Black pants and white shoes with the colors of the bandana.
"It's nice to meet you." Xion is a girl with blue eyes and black hair with one bang tucked behind her right ear. She wears a sleeveless double buttoned, collared shirt and a black belt, a short white pleated skirt and black boots that reach her mid-shin with beige color to the upper fifth.
"The name's Lea. Got it memorized?" asked Lea as he taps his finger to the side of his head. His hair is a bright red and his eyes are blue green. He wears a long sleeveless hooded black vest, a sleeveless dark gray and red plaid button-down shirt with a short-sleeve black shirt underneath, and blackish-red pants and black mid-calf boots.
"Yeah. I have it memorized," said Ajax.
"You are impossible to miss," joked Woody. Lea chuckles at this.
"Greetings." The last of the group is most likely Isa. He has blue hair that goes past his shoulders, an x shaped scar on his face between his sea-green eyes. He wears a jacket that has a high collar, a different colored stripe along the shoulders and down the length of the sleeves with a gold medallion on the left breast bearing a gold star and a waxing crescent moon, and he wears black shoes with the gray camouflage as the trim along the bottom.
"Hi," said Ajax as Sophia goes to sniff Isa.
Isa gets down to Sophia's level and gently pets her. "You have a nice dog."
"Her name's Sophia."
"A good name for a good girl." Isa keeps petting Sophia, and she falls to the ground enjoying the attention.
"Everyone. This is Ajax Nobody, Woody Woodpecker and we've all seen Opus around," said Roxas as he introduces Ajax and Woody to everyone.
"H-Hi," said Ajax nervously.
"So, what brings you to Twilight Town?" asks Hayner.
"We landed here after finding a stone for a magic compass," answers Ajax.
"You serious?" asks Lea.
"Yeah. Here," Ajax pulls out the compass and shows it.
"Can I take a look?" asks Xion.
"Sure."
Xion takes the compass as Ajax passes it to her. Xion looks at the compass and tries to open it, but she can't get it to open. "Huh? It won't open."
"Huh? It should open. It's always opened for me," said Ajax.
"Let me try," said Pence as he comes and tries to help Xion. Xion hands over the compass to Pence. Pence looks at the compass, no latches, or buttons, just a lid. Pence tries to open it, but he can't. "I got a good grip, but it just won't open."
"Oh, give me that," Woody grabs the compass. "Let me show you how it is done." Woody tries to open the compass and it opens. "See?"
"How did you do that?" askes Hayner.
"No trick. I just flipped the lid," explained Woody.
"But I tried to open it and it wouldn't open," said Xion.
"Same thing happened to me," said Pence.
"Maybe it's picky on who opens it," said Lea.
"Let me try," requested Opus. They hand Opus the compass and when he tries to open the compass, it wouldn't open. "Huh. Guess I can't open it either."
"Why won't it open for any of you but opens for Woody and me?" asks Ajax.
"I don't know. The compass may have some magic that keeps anyone other than the users of the compass," Isa.
"Could it be that simple?" asks Roxas.
"Maybe. It is hard to say for certain without further study," said Isa.
"How about we continue this over breakfast? These guys must be hungry, and we have a lot to talk about," said Olette.
"Not a bad idea," said Roxas.
"Yeah. Let's go to the bistro," said Hayner.
"Bistro?" wonders Ajax.
"Oh boy. Fancy food. Yum," said Woody.
"But we don't have any munny for the bistro," said Opus.
"Relax, we can cover ya and we got connections with the owner," said Lea.
"You're kidding me?" says Ajax.
"Nope. Let us pay for it," said Xion.
"Ok. Let's go," said Ajax.
Everyone nods and they walk out the Usual Spot and go to the Bistro at Tram Common.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
The Bistro was a nice corner eatery tucked in a corner of Tram Common with a small courtyard with many tables set up. From the tables, people can watch the trams go by at a safe distance. The group gets a large table so they can all sit together.
Not too far away, a metal man was dancing like a robot ballerina. Near his feet was a hat with a few coins inside. Ajax watches the metal man dance silently, gripping his backpack straps tightly. Opus takes note of this.
"Hey uh Ajax, why don't you have this seat?" Opus gives Ajax a seat that faces away from the metal man and is still a good distance away from the street performer.
"I would like that yes. T-Thanks," replied Ajax.
"Alright. Here you go," said Opus as Ajax takes his backpack off and sits down in the seat. Opus gets a seat as well.
The three looks at the menu and see various breakfast dishes including omelets, crepes, and pancakes. They scan at the various food items for a few minutes.
"Are we ready to order?" asked the waiter.
"Yeah. I'll have an omelet with ham, spinach, and tomato with hashbrowns on the side. And a small plate of scrambled eggs for my dog," said Ajax.
"Big breakfast with eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, biscuits," replied Woody.
"Strawberry crepes," said Opus.
Everyone else ordered their food and the waiter went to the kitchen.
"So, where are you three going to do now?" asked Roxas.
"Well, we are just going to follow the compass and maybe find another of those runes," replied Ajax.
"Runes? You mean those little rocks," asked Woody.
"Yeah. Small enough to be runes. Only other thing to call them. Better than rocks," said Ajax.
"Good point," said Woody.
"So, these runes, they help you get to other worlds, right?" asked Olette.
"Yeah. But it has only happened twice. The first was by accident and then Woody and I ended up here," said Ajax.
"So, you are trying to find your way home using the compass?" asked Isa.
"Yeah. I got to get back as fast as I can. Problem is, I don't know where it is," said Ajax.
"So, it's a road trip across the universe. Good luck with that. There are a lot of worlds out there," said Lea.
"Yeah," said Ajax as he brings out the compass and opens it. He looks at the five runes inside. The mountain, the cloud, the eight-pointed star, the clock, and the one with images of nature. Ajax thinks back to the dream, he saw sixteen symbols. Could finding all sixteen get him back home?
"Ok. You find a rune and then what?" asks Pence.
"I pick four of the runes and slide them into these slots. If the combo is good a portal opens. Sophia, Woody, and I got here with the mountain, this nature looking one, the eight-pointed star and the clock in that order," said Ajax.
"So, you have to pick combinations at random just to find home," said Xion.
"That could take a long time. How are you going to tell what places you have already been to?" asked Pence.
"As long as I have empty spots in my journal. I can log the combinations," answered Ajax.
"And you can log it with this," Roxas pulls out a strange looking phone.
Ajax looks at the phone, the top is covered by a gold crown, the sides are a royal blue, with black at the bottom. On the back is a camera surrounded by a gold gear. On the front is a button with a rabbit symbol. "What is this?"
"It's a Gummi Phone. We asked some friends of ours to make one for you," answered Roxas as he gives the phone to Ajax.
"It's feels heavy," said Ajax as he narrows his eyes on the front button
"Yeah. We got you one of the older models due to getting it on short notice," said Pence.
"Thank you. I never had a fancy phone before," said Ajax.
"Would you like some help learning how it works?" asked Pence.
Ajax doesn't answer, instead starting to play with the phone. Frankly, he takes to it like a fish to water. He sees several apps on the main screen. Looking at them he sees photo album, journal, glossary, character files, adversaries, treasures, recipes. "Hmmmm… Can I make my own apps for record keeping?"
"Sure. Just go to settings and select 'new app,'" answered Olette.
"Thanks. So, does this thing make calls? Like say, I have a phone number I want to type in," asks Ajax.
"No. The phones are on a closed-circuit frequency. It's connected to only a few people," answered Xion.
"Dang it. I was hoping to call home and tell them I am alright," said Ajax.
"Sorry. Interworld communications is still new, so some things are just out of reach," said Pence.
"Thanks anyway," said Ajax.
"So, anyone with these phones can call us and we can call them?" asked Woody.
"That's right," answered Roxas.
"Who can we even call?" asked Opus.
Before they can see, someone is calling Ajax. "Huh?" Ajax answers the call and a face-pops onto the screen. On the screen is an old man with a long white beard, wearing a long blue hat and a blue robe, on his nose are a set of spectacles.
"Why hello there. You must be the one I have heard about. You are Ajax, correct?" asked the man.
"…Yes…"
"My name is Merlin. Merlin the Wizard," said Merlin.
"A wizard?! Cool!" said Woody.
"Can you teach us magic?" asked Opus.
"I most certainly can," answers Merlin as Ajax narrows his eyes at him via the screen. "Are you alright my boy?"
"Yeah. Just you look very familiar to me," answered Ajax.
"Really? I'm not sure how, I don't travel to very many worlds," said Merlin. "I am just calling to make sure you have gotten the Gummi Phone."
"Yeah. Thanks for it by the way, but I don't know why you are giving me one," said Ajax.
"Roxas and Olette informed me that you would be travelling to other worlds. Now we need to protect the World Order, and this is the best way to keep an eye on you," explained Merlin.
"World Order?" asked Ajax.
"What's that supposed to mean?" asked Woody.
"The World Order is basically a set of rules that says that we just can't go blabbing that we are from another world. It's one of those taboo things," explained Opus.
"And with you three, I'm sorry, four, hopping around. We just can't let you go unsupervised," said Merlin.
"Ok. So, we keep the other worlds thing secret till we need it. Hang on, wouldn't a kid with a talking woodpecker and penguin raise a few eyebrows?" asked Ajax.
"You would be surprised how often that it overlooked," said Lea.
"Huh?"
"Friend of ours travels with a giant talking dog and duck and no one has batted an eye."
"I see."
"So, we can go around without people looking at us funny," said Woody.
"That's the hope," said Opus.
"Oh. Merlin, any signs of Sora?" asked Xion.
"I'm afraid not. We are still looking for him," said Merlin as everyone frowns.
"Friend of yours?" asked Ajax.
"Yeah. You can say that. He's… lost. Kind of like you. We are trying to find him and bring him home," said Roxas.
"Ok. Hope you find him," said Ajax. The Twilight Gang gives weak smiles to Ajax.
"Now then, onto the next matter. Show me the compass. I want to get a good look at it and see what I can turn up," said Merlin.
"Sure," said Ajax as he turns the gummi phone so Merlin can look at the compass.
"Now let's see… Hmm… My word, such detail. A few dents but can be fixed. Hmm… Five runes," mused Merlin.
"Is everything ok?" asked Roxas.
"Roxas, you and the others just help Ajax find the next rune. I'll talk with Yensid and we can see what we can dig up," said Merlin.
"Ok," said Roxas.
"What's going on? I should know too," said Ajax.
"Oh, relax young man. Just eat and then find that rune. I will be back once I have more to share," said Merlin as he hangs up.
"What was that all about?" asked Woody.
"I don't know. But Merlin mostly knows what he is doing," said Lea.
"He didn't seem all that concerned about the compass," said Isa.
"Maybe it's just a magic compass," said Hayner.
"Yeah," said Ajax. Ajax continues to stare at the open compass as the needle points to the north as the glowing blue needle points to his left. Ajax looks more closely at the compass and could see the gears turning inside the compass. He could hear the tiny clinks inside as they turn. The clicks became louder and louder as Ajax looks at it longer.
"Ajax? Ajax!" shouted Olette.
"Huh?" replied Ajax.
"Are you ok?" asked Pence.
"Yeah pal, you looked at the compass and spaced out on us," said Woody.
"I did? Sorry about that," said Ajax.
"You going to be ok?" asked Opus.
"I will once we get some food. Speaking of which, where is our food?" asked Ajax.
"Should be here in just a moment," answered Xion.
"Cool," said Ajax.
"While you were spaced out, Opus and I played with our new bracelets and equipped our new abilities. Now we can do cool tricks too," said Woody.
"Great."
"Oh. Food's here," said Roxas as waiters came and gave them their food.
Ajax got his omelet, Woody his big breakfast, Opus his crepes, and Sophia with her plate of scrambled eggs. Ajax rubbed his hands together and licked his lips. He set the compass to the side and began to eat.
Meanwhile, the metal man was dancing till it spotted the compass. Then it proceeded to dance its way towards the compass. Other metal men soon followed suit. The people were enjoying the dancing, even throwing coins into a hat, but the metal man stepped over the hat like it wasn't even there. They danced towards the Twilight Gang.
Back with Ajax, he was eating his breakfast with a smile on his face. "I can't remember the last time I had food this good."
"This is the best breakfast I ever tasted," said Woody.
"So delicious. I want three, no four more plates," said Opus.
"Looks like the Bistro has three new customers," said Lea before Sophia barked. "Four customers."
The four continued to eat as the rest of the crew got their food as well. Meanwhile, a total of twenty metal men slowly danced towards Ajax. They continued to eat in bliss.
"Mmmmmmm…" moaned Ajax as he ate. Suddenly, he felt something was behind him. "Huh?" Ajax looks behind him and sees a metal man staring down at him while doing a slow floss dance. "Um… Hello?" The metal man kept dancing, looking down at Ajax and the compass. Ajax felt very uncomfortable as the metal man kept dancing and staring at him. "Please go away." The metal man didn't budge.
"Hey buddy! Didn't you hear him? He said get lost!" shouted Woody.
The metal man didn't budge. "Hey! You are scaring our friend," said Opus.
"Go away and let us eat in peace," said Olette.
"Go away!" yelled Vivi as the rest of the group got up.
Hayner goes to confront the metal man. "Now get lost and leave us to our breakfast." Hayner tries to push the metal man away, but he wouldn't budge. "HEY! Get a clue and GET LOST!" Hayner punches the metal man's shoulder.
The metal man starts humming he starts dancing and looks at Hayner. A saw jagged mouth opens and starts screaming. Everyone covers their ears. The other metal men join in the metal screaming. The metal man raises its arms and slams towards Ajax.
"Look out!" Opus jumps at Ajax, making them dodge the attack. The metal man's arms smash the table. Woody grabs the compass as they get away from the metal man. The metal man roars and walks towards Ajax. Roxas, Xion, Lea, and Isa get between them.
"Hayner, Pence, Olette, Vivi, get Ajax and his friends out of here and find that rune. We'll take care of them," said Roxas.
"Ok," said Pence.
"Give them hell guys," said Hayner. The four nods as they summon their weapons. The metal men emit steam and get into a fighting stance.
"This way," said Olette as she guided Ajax and the others to the subway.
"Let's move!" said Vivi.
"Don't need to tell me twice," said Woody. They ran away from the fight.
Roxas goes to swipe at the metal man, but it dodges and punches Roxas in the gut. "AH!"
"Roxas!" yelled Xion as she fires magic to have ice cover the metal man. She gets a few swipes in before more came to attack her.
Lea and Isa team up to take down five metal man at once. "These guys are tougher than dusks," said Lea.
"Or you have gotten sloppy," retorted Isa.
"Hehehe. Care to help get the rust off?"
"Light them up. I'll follow."
Lea smiles as he shoots fire at three metal men; they scream in pain as Isa smashes them. They fall to pieces.
Xion and Roxas team up to take down more as the people of Twilight Town ran away from the metal men. "We need to chase them down," said Xion.
"Right. You with me?" asks Roxas.
"Always," said Xion. They run after the metal men.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
Meanwhile, Ajax and the others get into something called the Underground Concourse. Hayner and Pence close the gate behind them to keep the metal men from following them.
"Those things going to hold?" asked Opus.
"Let's not stick around to find out," said Pence.
"Ok Ajax. Where to?" asked Olette.
Ajax looks at the compass and it points towards the right. "That way," pointed Ajax.
"The train station. Let's go," said Hayner.
Everyone nods and they run down the tunnel, they see the exit, but two metal men block their path. They screech at them.
"AAAHHH!"
"Wrong way!" said Woody.
Ajax sees another path. "THIS WAY!" They all rush down the hall, away from the metal men. "Is there another way?"
"Yeah. There is," said Pence.
"Follow us," said Hayner as he and the other Twilight Town residents lead Ajax and his friends.
As they run, they climb some stairs and take a left. As they turn a metal man slams his ball fist into the floor, leaving a massive dent.
"Whoa!" shouted Woody.
"Keep running!" shouted Ajax as they kept running. They keep running through the tunnels with the metal men chasing after them. They run downstairs, jumping over-steps as the metal men lumbered towards them. They enter the Tunnelway where a big open area is seen.
"Forward and left! That's the exit!" shouted Pence.
"Ok. Let's get out of…" shouted Ajax before a metal man came around the corner and punched Ajax in the chest, sending him into the open area. "AAHH!"
"AJAX!" shouted everyone.
"AAHHH!" Hayner charges at the metal man and leaps to kick at him. The metal man dodges and punches Hayner into the exit tunnel. "Ah!"
"Hayner!" shouted Pence. Pence runs to Hayner.
"Leave us alone!" shouted Olette as she punches the metal man only to hurt her hand. "Ouch!" The metal man grabs Olette and tosses her towards Hayner and Pence.
"Olette!" yells Vivi as he runs to them.
The metal man claps his metal ball hands together three times and a barrier appears. Pence goes to knock on the barrier.
"Guys!" shouted Pence.
Ajax sat on the floor, looking at the metal man with fear in his eyes. A memory came across his mind as the metal man came toward him in a killer robot manner. Ajax was frozen in place, his body refusing to move despite his mind demanding him to run. The metal man toward over Ajax and was ready to strike. Ajax closes his eyes and put his arm in front of him.
The metal man screeches and suddenly Woody comes to peck at the metal man's head. "GET AWAY FROM MY FRIEND YOU RUST BUCKET!" Woody pecks furiously at the metal man. It doesn't make any dents, but it did annoy the metal man. It screeches and swings at Woody, but the toon bird flies around the robot.
"Ajax! Snap out of it," said Opus. Sophia barks at the metal man.
"Wha-What? We need to get out of here," said Ajax.
"We can't! The robot made a barrier. We have to fight," said Opus.
"Ok. Ok," said Ajax as he got up. His hands shake as he points his staff at the metal man. Woody zips by Ajax's side and gets in a fighting stance. Opus readies his slingshot. The metal man screeches at them.
The battle begins and the metal man slams his steel fists at Ajax. Ajax rolls away and starts whacking at the robot but it was quick to see that it wasn't working. Woody pecks at the robot's head but nothing happens. Opus shoots rocks but that doesn't work.
"NOTHING'S WORKING!" shouted Ajax.
"We need a new plan!" shouted Woody.
"We need to find its weakness," said Opus. Opus's yellow materia glows upon saying weakness. "Huh?" Opus's brain gears start turning. He then remembers what the Duke said. It was the access materia. "Access!" The materia glows and his vision goes blue and wispy images appear around the metal man. Opus looks at the images and sees something call 'weaknesses', under it was an image of a flame. "Fire? Fire! It's weak to fire!"
"But we don't have fire!" shouted Woody.
Ajax looks at his staff and his green materia. "OH YES WE DO!" Ajax rushes and jabs his staff into the metal man's chest. "FIRE!" Ajax's staff erupts with a fireball, blasting the metal man point blank. The metal man screeches in pain as the fire melts some of its body. "Heck yeah!" cheered Ajax.
"Way to go!" cheers Woody. The metal man swats Woody out of the air. "AH!"
"WOODY!"
"I'm fine. Let's scrap this theme park reject!" said Woody. Everyone got on guard. The flames die out on the metal man, and it roars at them.
The metal man shoulder charges at them, they all dodge the attack. Ajax whacks it even if it doesn't do damage. The metal man swings at Ajax, but he dodges the attack. Meanwhile, Woody pumps himself up and charges fast at the metal man, using Pecking Barrage to do some damage on the metal man.
"AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!" screeched the metal man. It starts spinning to knock off Woody and Ajax.
"AAHH!" they both shout as they land on the ground with a thud.
Opus find a large rock and puts it in his slingshot. He takes aim at the metal man as it starts moving towards the penguin. Opus waits for it to get close and then lets the rock fly and hits the metal man in the eye. The eye shatters and the metal man roar in pain. It starts swinging wildly, hitting Opus, making him smash into the wall. "AAHH!"
"Opus!" yelled Ajax.
"You ok?!" shouted Woody.
"Yeah. Just a little bruised," said Opus as he peels himself from the wall.
"Time to end this," said Ajax. The metal man attacks Ajax. Ajax was hurt enough from the fight, but he dodges as best he can. The metal man screams, as it does, Ajax jams his staff into the metal man's mouth, "Fire!" One more firebolt was launched and blew up the metal man's insides.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" screamed the metal man as it burned. Everyone ducked as the metal man blew up. Robot parts flew everywhere, and the barrier went down. Ajax looked at the remains and saw a small gold coin. Ajax picks it up and sees a '10G' on it. He pockets the coin.
Ajax tries to get up, but his muscles and injuries made him fall back down. "AH!"
"Ajax!" Olette ran to help Ajax up.
"How did we do?" asked Ajax.
"You did good," answered Olette. "Vivi, please heal them." Vivi nods as he comes to them.
He thrusts his hands out, "Cure." A green mist surrounds Ajax and his friends and their injuries are instantly fixed.
"Whoa!" said Ajax.
"Now that's the good stuff," said Woody.
"We need to learn how to do that," said Opus.
"Yeah," said Ajax.
BANG!
They turn and see five more metal men coming out from the tunnels they came in.
"Oh no! We are not dealing with more of you today," said Woody.
"RUN!" shouted Ajax as they all ran outside, the metal men following close behind.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
They run outside to a different section of town, this one more bathed in the light of sunset. Ajax didn't know which way to go next.
"THIS WAY!" yelled Olette as they took a road to the left. Ajax and co chase after the Twilight Gang. They run past an alleyway when a metal man tries to swipe at them. It misses and they keep running.
"Train station is just up ahead!" yelled Pence.
"Please be there. Please be there. Please be there," chanted Opus as they run up to the station. They rush up a set of stairs, pushing back people as they were getting off. The metal men are close behind and people screamed as they ran away.
The group crashed into the ticket booth and started slamming on the window, screaming for help. "Settle down kids. What is going on?" asked the operator.
"We are being chased by men in metal suits!" shouted Hayner.
"They are trying to kill us!" yelled Vivi.
"Let us on the train! Let us on the train!" pleaded Olette.
"You expect me to believe that?" asked the Operator till the group ran into the train and a metal man slammed a fist against the window, breaking it. "CHEESE ONIONS!" The operator starts to call the police as the train doors start closing. A metal man slams a fist onto the train door, denting it but thankfully the train started to move, leaving the metal men behind.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
The train went down the track and everyone stood there in silence. They looked and listened for any sign of the metal men. None appeared and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
"Everyone ok?" asked Pence.
"We good. Just terrified," answered Woody.
Ajax gave a thumbs up. "Why are they after us?"
"I don't think they are after us. Maybe they are after the compass," said Opus.
"What makes you say that?' asked Olette.
"The first one was staring at Ajax and the Compass before Hayner pushed it and it started attacking," explained Opus.
"So as long as Ajax has the compass, then…" started Vivi but everyone came to the same conclusion.
"Then let's get rid of it," said Woody as he grabs the compass.
"NO! It's my only way home!" screamed Ajax as he tried to get the compass back.
"We can find another way. Get rid of the compass!"
"NO!"
"Let go!"
"NO!"
"Give me the compass!"
"NO!"
As Ajax and Woody fight, Opus looks out the read window and sees a scary sight. "GUYS! The metal men are on our tails!"
"What?!" yelped everyone as they went to look behind the train. They see the metal men running after the train with the speed and form of Olympic runners.
"Must make train go faster," said Woody.
They rush to the front and beg the driver to go faster. He hears their pleas, and the train goes faster as a result. Everyone is relieved until they feel the train rapidly slow down.
"What's going on?" asks Ajax.
"We arrived at the station," said Pence.
"No. No. No. No. We can't be there yet," says Ajax as the train stops and the doors open.
"Check the compass and find that rune!" said Opus.
Ajax opens the compass and follows it till the needle starts spinning. "Where is it?! It's not here!"
"The clock tower! You need to get up there!" said Olette.
"How?!"
"This way," said Hayner as they run out of the station and down an alley leading to a door. "Through there and up the stair."
"Right. Thanks," said Woody.
"Olette, Hayner, Pence, Vivi, you all need to get out of here," said Ajax.
"We are not leaving you," said Olette.
"We have no time to argue. They are after us, not you. So run back to Roxas and the others as fast as you can," pleads Ajax.
Olette nods, "Be careful."
Ajax nods as pulls the brim of his hat down. Just then the metal men show up and run at them. The Twilight Gang run and Ajax and co enter the door. Ajax slams the door shut as Woody slides a shovel into the handle to keep the metal men from coming in.
They run up the stairs as the hear loud metal bangs knock at the door. They look and see massive dents in the door. They get back to racing up the stairs, not wanting to deal with anymore metal men. Ajax and friends make it to the second floor before the metal men break down the door.
"That didn't last long," said Woody.
"Doesn't matter. We need to run," said Ajax.
They run as Opus falls a little behind. His small legs make it hard to climb up the stairs in a hurry. "Wait up for me!" Ajax stops and turns around to grab Opus. Ajax grabs Opus, but Opus's butt falls off. They don't realize this till they hear the loud clang sound.
"Keep going! I'll get it!" shouted Woody as he flies down to grab Opus's butt. Woody looks up to see a metal man ready to swing his fist down on the woodpecker. Woody zips away as the metal fist falls on where he stood. The stairs crack and crumble under the metal ball. The metal man screeches as the rest go after Ajax and his friends.
The continue to run up the stairs as they hear the metal men chase after them. Woody looks up and gets an idea. He flies up and starts pecking at the stone of the stairs. This hurts his beak, but he was determined to put holes into the stone. Ajax, Sophia and Opus pass Woody as they continue to run up.
The stone begins to crack as the metal men come up the stairs. The stairs fall apart taking some of the metal men with it. Some of the metal men fell to the bottom but the rest were still chasing them. Woody counted what was left, only six are left.
Ajax and co make it to the fourth flight of stairs. Ajax looks back and sees the metal men. Ajax looks at his arms and he has Opus in one arm and the compass with his staff in the other. His heart is beating a mile a minute, his mind racing, both telling him to run. Run. RUN!
Sophia runs up the stairs as fast as she can be the little dog slips and falls down a few steps. Sophia yelps as she falls.
"Sophia!" yells Ajax stopping to try and save his dog.
Sophia looks up and barks at a metal man about to smash her under its metal fist. Woody zips in and pecks the robot in the face, making it fall backward and into the other metal men. One metal man tumbles off the side of the stair railing and crashes to the floor, hard enough to break the metal man.
Woody grabs Sophia and they run up the stairs as the metal men try to get back up. "Don't just stand there! RUN!"
They get back to running, so they get to the exit door. Ajax bursts out of the door and rushing out he nearly runs off the edge.
"AH!" yelps Ajax. Woody grabs Ajax's backpack and gets him back to stable ground. "Thanks."
"No problem," said Woody.
"Now where's the rune?" asked Opus.
Ajax opens the compass and follows the blue needle to the clock face. Ajax looks at the giant clock face, and he finds a small hole in the center of a bunch of broken glass. Ajax pokes around and pulls a small stone from the clock face. On the rune are three four-pointed stars, each having a different colored jewel.
"Ok. We got the rune," said Woody.
"Now what?" asked Opus.
"I put it in the compass," said Ajax. Ajax brings the rune to the compass and a blue light comes from it and a blue mist grabs the rune from Ajax's fingers. The rune floats into the compass between the mountain and the cloud. The compass glows in a brilliant blue glow before sending out a pulse, they cover their eyes. Some of the magic flows into Ajax and his friends.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
Meanwhile, Roxas and his friends are fighting the last of the metal men.
"Everyone ok?" asks Roxas.
"Yeah. Just getting the rust of the joints. These things are tougher than heartless," joked Lea.
"No time for jokes. We need to find the others," said Xion.
Isa smashes the last of the metal men with his claymore. "Best course of action is to split up and search the town."
"Right. Let's do that. Lea, you take Sunset Terrance. Isa, the underground. Xion, the forest. I'll take the clock tower." Everyone nods in agreement. Just then, they feel the shockwave and all of Twilight Town shakes.
"What was that?!" asks Lea.
"An earthquake?" said Isa.
"Twilight Town doesn't get earthquakes," said Roxas.
"Roxas!" yells Olette and she and the others come running towards them.
"Olette! Hayner! Pence! Vivi! What happened?"
"Where's Ajax and the compass?" asks Isa.
"Metal man trapped us in the underground tunnel. They beat it. Then we took a train to the station," said Olette as she is out of breath.
"Now they are in the clock tower with metal men chasing them," said Pence.
"We gotta hurry and help them!" said Hayner as Vivi put on a determined face.
"Right. Let's go!" said Roxas as he runs towards the clock tower with everyone following him.
Z-z-z-z-z-Z
Back with Ajax and friends, the light from the compass dies and they look at the compass now with six runes. They look at it with awe. However, the moment was killed by the sound of loud banging.
"Moment's over. Ok Ajax, time for a portal and we get the heck out of here!" said Woody.
"R-Right," trembled Ajax as he rushed to get the right combination. He moves the runes around the North slot till the new rune starts to glow and he slides the rune in. The banging starts getting louder. Ajax rushes to find the next rune for the East slot. The banging gets louder. Ajax slides the cloud into the East slot. More bangs sound off. Ajax slides the clock rune into the South slot. The door gains multiple dents as the metal men screech behind the door.
"Hurry!" said Woody.
Ajax slides the tree rune into the West slot and the compass glows blue and a portal opens. The door flies off its hinges and the metal men pour from the doorway.
"AAHH!"
"Ok everybody! Time to move!" said Woody.
"Woody, take Sophia and jump," said Ajax.
"What about us?" said Opus.
"I grab you and we jump together," said Ajax as the metal men run to them. "You ready?"
"I don't have much choice!" screamed Opus.
"Great!" said Ajax as he grabs Opus, and they leap into the portal. A metal man leaps after them but only the top half makes it through. The other half falls to the ground as the portal closes. The metal men try to stop running, but they fall over the edge. One stopped short and was about to fall off.
The last metal man looks down the side of the clock tower as the other metal men fall. The last metal man teeters on the edge trying to regain balance but…
"Uh oh," squeaked the metal man as he fell too.
The metal men fall down the clock tower and smash into the ground and pieces of them fly everywhere as Roxas and his friends arrive at the clock tower.
"Watch out! Heavy showers!" said Lea.
Everyone stood far enough away to keep from getting hit from debris.
Olette looks at the pile of metal men. "Ajax? Ajax?!"
"I don't see him or the others," said Hayner.
"You think they're alright?" asked Vivi.
"I don't see any sign of them," said Xion.
"They may have found the rune and opened a portal. That was most likely the shockwave we felt," said Isa.
"At least they are safe," said Lea.
Pence picks up the heads of one of the metal men. "Amazing. This is… well was a fully functioning robot. Completely driven by an AI."
"Ok so it is a cool robot," said Hayner as he rolled his eyes. "But why were they after Ajax?"
"They were most likely after the compass. We should take one of the heads and examine it back at the manor to find out who is behind this," said Isa.
"And find out where Ajax went," said Roxas.
The metal man head's eyes begin to glow. "Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha," chackled the metal man head in a digitized man's voice. "You lost the boy and the compass? How sad." Pence drops the head in fright as the other metal men heads looked at the group. Their eyes glow an eerie red. "Fortunately for us, we can track him and find him. We will get the boy and then the real fun begins. Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!" The robots laugh as their eyes blink rapidly before they burst into flames, melting their circuits and insides.
"Water!" shouts Roxas as he tries to put out the flames. It works but looking at what's left, there was nothing they can use to figure out who was behind this.
"The real fun begins? What does that mean?" asks Xion.
"It means that the worlds are in danger again," said Roxas.
"And now we have two people to find," said Lea.
"Ajax," said Olette.
"We should tell Yensid what has happened. He needs to know," said Isa. Everyone nods in agreement as they leave.

Vivi: A small boy who was a member of the Twilight Town Disciplinary Committee. He hangs out with Roxas and his friends while he waits for his friends to return from a warrior's journey. Metal Men: Creepy robot men things that chased me and my friends. They walk around like cheap animatronics and are scary are them. Their hands a giant metal balls that really hurt when they hit you. They are too tough to face more than one off at a time. (Represents something from Tekken 3 1996)
