Girl Trouble (February 10, 2017)
From the minute Peter came into the lab that Friday, Tony knew his intern looked like he was about to implode, and the billionaire couldn't help but wonder why. Did something happen at school? Did something happen with May? Did something happen while he was out as Spider-Man? Wait, he came straight from school. That couldn't be it. Maybe he did have a rough day.
"Hey, Mr. Stark," Peter said as he walked in with a small smile on his face.
After mentally telling himself to keep cool, Tony smiled in return as he watched Peter…waiting for the word vomit that he had come to love over the past few months. Ever since they started these Lab Days every Friday, whenever Peter entered the lab, he would always make sure to provide a very detailed update on what happened at Midtown that day. Something wasn't right.
"Hey…kid," Tony said as he watched Peter put his backpack down and grabbing some tools to begin working on the nanotech project. "Uh…how was school today?"
"Oh, fine," Peter said nodding his head stiffly, "it was good, fine."
Tony squinted in suspicion trying to find any indication that Peter was lying or at least hiding something. It didn't take him long to see that Peter was in fact hiding something. He was barely looking at him, and there was still no word vomit. "Are you sure?" he asked gently.
"Y-Yeah, w-why do you ask?" Peter asked finally looking up at his mentor.
"Because you…you're not doing your usual…Midtown update," Tony said gently, "and you look like you're about to implode. Did…did something happen?"
"Well…not…not exactly," Peter said, "but it's…it's stupid. You wouldn't want to heart it."
Tony gave a small smile. "Hey, come on, remember what I told you," he said. "You can come to me about anything, kid—big or small…Spider-Man or Peter-Parker-stuff. So, lay it on me. I want to know what's going through that big head of yours."
Peter's heart pounded. He knew that his mentor told him that he could ask him for help on anything…big or small…outside of the internship or Spider-Man. Tony had said so himself when they went to that gala just a month ago…when he had that panic attack after Norman Osborn called him "Pedro." He then remembered something that May said to him earlier that morning…
"Honey, just talk to him about this. Maybe Mr. Stark can offer you a guy's perspective…"
He took a deep breath and decided to go for it. The worst that could happen was that Tony wouldn't want to talk about it, and as embarrassing as that would be, he could at least try and get it off his chest.
"Okay, Mr. Stark," he said, "it's just…Valentine's Day is coming up."
"Right, I'm aware," Tony interjected.
"Right," Peter continued, "and school does this thing called Valentine's Grams, where you can send someone in school a small box of candy. They've been doing this thing all week, and the last day is on Monday before they give them out on Valentine's Day, which is Tuesday."
"Okay…so call me stupid, kid," Tony replied, "but I don't see where the problem is."
"I'm getting to that," Peter said holding his hand up. "Anyway, the problem is…that girl—you remember—MJ?"
"Oh right, the girl you left a voicemail for," Tony said. "You looked like you won the Jackpot when she didn't answer."
Peter couldn't help but chuckle. "Yeah, that's her," he said. It was then that he realized that he hadn't really told Tony what had happened after that day he left the voicemail…how he and MJ had been talking on the phone a little more and how she had been hanging out with him and Ned more often. "Well, we actually had been hanging out with Ned more, and she and I had been talking on the phone a little more."
"Oh, that's good," Tony said with a small smile. The billionaire mentally kicked himself for not asking more about what happened after MJ didn't answer the phone that day, he gave Peter some confidence to call her. However, he then realized why Peter brought her up, and he smiled. "Let me guess…you're debating whether or not you should send this MJ-girl a Valentine's Gram."
Peter stared at Tony for a brief moment. "Wow, you're good, Mr. Stark," he said.
"Years of experience, kid," Tony said with a small smile. "Well, let me ask you this, kid, does she like candy? Because there was one time when I tried to smooth things over with Pepper by giving her strawberries, and I completely forgot that she was allergic to strawberries."
"Oof," Peter said cringing, "that's some major second-hand embarrassment I'm feeling right now."
"Yeah, it wasn't the greatest moment of my life," Tony replied cringing at the memory. He refrained from mentioning the fight he got into with Rhodey at his birthday party and how he soiled himself in his suit all while he was dying from palladium poisoning. That was a story for another time…maybe once Peter went off to college. "Anyway, make sure it's something that she likes."
"Oh yeah no, she definitely likes candy," Peter replied, "and school always makes sure that the candy doesn't have anything people could be allergic to."
"Perfect, then you shouldn't have a problem," Tony replied.
"You really think I should go for it?" Peter asked with widened eyes. "What if she laughs at me or…doesn't want it or…?"
"Kid, relax," Tony said gently, "it's perfectly fine. You're not confessing your love or proposing to her. You're just giving her a small gift for Valentine's Day letting her know that you're thinking of her…making her feel good. There's nothing wrong with that. It's just a nice gesture you make in the process of getting to know her. There's no rush to take her out on a date or anything like that…not yet anyway."
"I honestly don't think I'm ready to go on a date yet," Peter said. "I mean…after—you know—what happened with Liz and…her dad…"
"And that's perfectly okay, Pete," Tony replied. "Just take one step at a time. You'll be back in the game when you're ready. For now, just stick with this Valentine's Gram, and the rest will fall into place."
Peter smiled genuinely. "Thanks, Mr. Stark," he said. He then took a deep breath. "Okay, okay, I'll do it on Monday. I'm going to sign up to give it to her on Monday."
"Atta boy," Tony said as his smile widened and he reached across the table to pat Peter on the shoulder, "that's what I want to hear."
Monday finally arrived as Tony worked in the lab early that morning. He had been texting and FaceTiming Peter throughout the weekend, and Peter had promised to text him as soon as he signed up to send the Valentine's Grams to MJ. The billionaire admitted that he felt a warm feeling in his chest when he gave Peter that advice on whether or not to give the Gram to the girl. It felt great to help his intern with the little things, and he hoped Peter would continue to come to him as well as May for help. Pepper said now that he opened the door, Peter would be more willing to do so, and he knew without a doubt that she was right.
He practically jumped out of his skin when FRIDAY announced that he had a text from Peter. Tony immediately grabbed his phone off the counter and looked at the screen.
"Just signed up! Hope this works! Will know for sure tomorrow!"
Tony's smile widened as he typed a response in return. "Atta boy, champ! You got this! She's going to love it!"
"I hope so!"
"I know so!"
Valentine's Day arrived in the blink of an eye, and of course, Tony and Pepper had plans to go out to dinner later that evening as soon as she finished work, which worked out for Tony because he would be able to respond to Peter when he would text him. The morning passed going into the afternoon, and he was starting to get a little nervous thinking that maybe MJ didn't like the Candy Gram after all. Sure enough, FRIDAY finally announced the text. The billionaire dropped what he was doing in the lab and grabbed his phone.
"She got it, Mr. Stark! She thanked e and said it was sweet of me!"
The smile splashed onto his face as the pride swelled in his chest while he typed back. "See? I told you! That's great, kid! One step at a time like I told you!"
"You were right! It felt good to make her smile like that!"
"Well then, you're off to a good start. When's her birthday?"
"I'll have to find out and let you know. I would love to give her a gift again."
"Alright, Casanova, just make sure you don't come off as creepy."
"Right, noted. Thanks, Mr. Stark, really! You were a big help!"
"Anytime, kid, and I mean it…anytime you need help with anything, I'm there."
