Play Nice
No one seemed to have noticed when they slipped inside and Mako quickly made a habit to find where they could exit. He reached over for Korra's hand again and squeezed her palm.
"Korra..." He mumbled, "Where..the hell..are we?"
She paused for a moment, looking at him with wide eyes. It didn't dawn on her until literally right now how much of herself and the entire underbelly of Republic City was about to be exposed. The first time she came here was after her date with Tahno and they weren't exactly turning their nose up at the place. It was honestly a welcomed surprise, but this time was obviously different. Mako had been reasonably understanding up until this point so she only hoped he continued that trend.
"Do you trust me?!" She replied trying to shout over the music.
"Of course!" He interlaced their fingers and nodded his head.
This was the part of the investigation where he had to trust his partner. Usually he knew the ins and outs. Where to go, who to talk with, but this was all brand new territory.
"Okay let's go!" She yelled.
Korra admittedly ignored his question, but in this case, it was better to show than to tell. Like what Tahno had done for her. They had no time to dip their toes in. Just jump right into the deep end.
They began to weave through the enormous corridor, maneuvering their bodies with the rhythm of the dancers surrounding them. Mako averted his eyes, although the task was nearly impossible. There were breasts, butts, and other private parts every direction he turned. He ignored the unadulterated part of his mind that drifted to other inappropriate thoughts. It was kind of inevitable not to get swept away in this easily distracted environment.
Several hands reached out for him but was stopped by Korra's arm over across his chest. "He's not interested," She spoke.
The two performers seemed to be disappointed but quickly walked away to look for another playmate. Korra hooked her arm around Mako's elbow and continued to walk him across the floor. She shooed away any potential workers that eyed Mako like a shiny new toy.
"No...No thank you...maybe next time...no thanks" Over and over again, they were approached by different people looking to add to their nightly delights, but Korra was having none of it.
The detective smirked, secretly enjoying seeing Korra be in the role of territorial for a change. Sure they were here on a specific mission but it felt nice to be visibly wanted by her.
He quickly caught on though and did the same when some were getting too up close and personal with her too. "What exactly are they doing?" Mako asked.
"They'll do whatever you want..." Korra admitted. She looked back at him suggestively, but he understood what she meant. "However, we aren't looking for those types of services tonight..." She winked.
"Have you before?"
Korra froze for a moment as instant flashbacks of her date with Tahno filled her mind. Mako was already obviously indifferent about it but she did say she would be honest from this point forward.
"Yeah we have..." She breathed.
She watched Mako's face but his expression didn't change. Obviously he knew who "we" referred to.
They made it to the other end of the room and quickly fled through a pair of double doors. The corridor they had entered was dark like the rest of the club with lounge chairs and booths lining the walls and across the floor. A woman in a long, silk dress sat plucking strings of a harp which definitely changed the vibe of the room from the previous they just left. Groups of people sat around elaborate tables, drinking wine, smoking cigars and playing an array of games.
Mako began to wonder where the exclusivity came into play down here. Sure some people like their sexual privacy but was it work thousands of dollars to protect?
"That's all this place is? Pay for sex?" He whispered.
"Not at all." She breathed. Mako shook his head as they walked amongst the booths. Korra passed a waiter and took a glass of champagne from his tray. Mako followed her suggestion and grabbed a glass as well, they needed to look like they were actively participating.
"Look around.." Korra whispered, "Do you notice anyone?"
They casually strolled along the room as Mako looked around attentively searching their faces. At first his instinct was to say no. He didn't have many people in his circle of acquaintances so at first, he was unsure who he should be searching for. Then, he noticed one of the officers in Beifong's troop. An older man in his late forties and about two decades of service under his belt. A few seats over was another officer who was accompanied by his wife who was a city hall judge.
Mako looked at Korra with an expression of disbelief as he recognized lawyers, bankers, celebrities, the list went on. What really intrigued him was that some of the people who mingled were publicly in direct opposition with one another. In different political parties or tax brackets.
"Hm," He narrowed his brows and Korra noticed him tighten his grip on his champagne glass.
"Kind of makes everything feel unreal doesn't it?" Korra breathed. Like they were in some type of simulation where everyone just played a role. Masked to society... she considered that now they were technically also apart of the ruse.
Mako was still caught up in the fact that some political figures shared drinks with the same people they publicly criticized. Criminals mating with the same people who vowed to lock them up.
"I get it now." They stopped at a vacant table. "This is definitely a high value spot. We could learn a lot from this place..."
Korra smiled, thankful her lead was approved, now she just hoped tonight would be fruitful. Some evidence is better than none at all.
"I don't see the white lotus guards anywhere.."
"Or a big shot Water-tribe guy," Korra nodded.
"There's no guarantee they will be here tonight...but we can ask around"
"Discreetly!" Korra added, "Like Tahno said."
Mako scoffed and looked down at his glass as if contemplating on drinking it. "So much for his help. He ditched us!"
"I'm sure he has a plan," Korra shrugged.
"Well so do I." He jutted out his chin dominantly and scanned the room. "We need to get closer..If we could talk with them-"
Korra downed the glass of alcohol then turned around adjusting her cleavage as she went. "way ahead of you," She confidently strutted away toward the gaming tables.
"Korra! Wait!" Mako quietly panicked. She was already out of ears reach and on to her next mission.
Left to his own devices he turned his attention to a few waiters leaving the scene. As they dipped behind a thick curtain he caught the gaze of one of the attendants. Her green eyes felt strangely familiar to him.
She paused for a moment staring back with a puzzled look on her face before she eventually left.
Mako quickly followed her.
Korra casually ventured along the corridor, taking slow calculated steps. She politely scanned the tables, catching eyes and remembering each individual face as best as she could. The glow of table lanterns lit the patrons faces in a calm and yet alluring way. Eventually she stopped at a table where a colorful trio played a game of Pai-sho.
"Do you mind if I join you?" She asked flirtatiously.
The three looked up at her, two men and one woman. "Sure, we actually needed another player." One of them spoke. He adjusted the rim of his glasses, letting his gaze travel up Korra's body bashfully.
"To whom are we acquainted?" The larger man asked as she sat down. He reached out and took Korra's palm and languidly kissed the back of it. The hairs of his thick mustache brushed the back of her hand making her inwardly cringe.
"Korra...of the Southern Water Tribe."
"Really? I am General Tonsi, of Republic City's armed forces.."
"Wow and who are you?" Korra prompted.
The other man answered first, "Oh I'm just a professor at Republic City Academy." He was blushing harshly as he admitted his profession wasn't nearly as fancy.
The woman smirked, her long lashes batting playfully, "I'm actress Ming We, surprised you haven't heard of me.."
"I don't get out much," Korra replied, turning to see a tanned woman with a short black bob hair cut. They distributed the Pai-sho tiles evenly amongst the three of them. This game had many rules as each region, culture, tradition played it differently. Never had Korra seen it played amongst four people, not that she was actually interested in playing, just a keen observation.
"How long have you been a member here? It's not often we see a new face." Tonsi asked.
Korra kept her composure, she knew out of her new companions the General would be the one asking the most questions.
"I'm not new," She smirked,
"Really? Then what brings you here?"
"I'm always here..." Korra smirked, "I just don't like others in my business..."
"ha! haha!" The actress laughed, "wow...I like her."
"Ah there's definitely levels to this place." The professor spoke, he awkwardly looked over his shoulder like he was afraid he was being watched. That perked Korra's interest.
"With your pay roll you probably don't have access to much do you?"
"Nope, not on a teacher's salary," He smiled kindly, "But then again what secrets do I have to keep." He laughed awkwardly and adjusted the glasses on his face.
"Other than cheating on your wife." Ming added.
The man's face burned a bright red as he shuffled the tiles in his hands. He looked like he wanted to defend his actions but couldn't find the right words to use.
"There's no room for judgement down here.." Tonsi spoke.
"Right," Korra smiled.
"But you, a princess...You must be full of secrets..." Ming jested.
She rimmed the edge of her empty glass with low fox-like eyes. Korra leaned closer to her, eyeing her full puckered lips suggestively. "You can only imagine..." She whispered.
Ming seemed wildly intrigued, in more ways than one. Her cat-like eyes studied Korra's face attentively. "Intrigue me..."
For a moment Korra thought to indulge her. One of her many strengths was persuasion of the sensual kind and if it was information Ming had to offer, that was one way to retrieve it.
"Your move Ming," Tonsi interrupted.
The actress begrudgingly put down a tile and waved a hand to Korra. "Princess..your turn."
Korra shuffled the tiles and placed a white lotus.
"Ahh a white Lotus..." Professor noted. "Did you know this tile became the symbol of unity and liberation during the time of the 100 year war? A secret organization was formed under the name...Legend says they aided the banished Prince Zuko in overthrowing the Fire Lord."
"Really!" Korra smiled, thankful the conversation was headed in a subject she wanted to talk about.
"But you should already know that." Tonsi interrupted yet again.
Korra side-eyed him curiously, what was his problem? "How would you know that?"
"You work at Republic City Cultural Museum. That's public information..."
"Ah you're right, but unfortunately...A lot of history on the Fire Nation we don't have access to. Only recently by General Iroh's gracious donations-"
Ming gasped, "Oh that's right! Including the crown that was stolen!"
"No," Korra corrected, "That was discovered in Southern Waters, it was shipped here to be on display in the museum."
"Oh...I hear the crown is a hot commodity." Ming replied.
"I don't know why?" Korra shrugged. She needed to give the impression it had no value, they'd be more open to sharing more details. "It has no gems or jewels..."
"But it has cultural significance.." The professor suggested. "And many are not too kind to Fire Nation natives unfortunately..."
Tonsi placed another tile after a few moments of contemplating his next move. "Waste of time that is...Feuding over old wars..Repeating past mistakes. Who cares to whom it belongs to?"
Korra cocked her head to the side as she mentally crossed General Tonsi off her lift of suspects. His hostility was towards others ignorance, no matter their cultural background.
"The investigation I hear is going very well," Korra lied, she placed another tile on the glass game board. "The crown hasn't left the four walls of the city. So I hear..."
Ming toyed with her long dangling earring. "I've entertained a few parties here and there, turns out Bei-fong's team is just as lost as the rest of us."
"That's not true!" Korra snapped.
They all paused for a second as Korra quickly recovered, "I've made it very clear I won't tolerate a cold case. This is more than just a crown. It's my tribe's lineage."
The professor placed another tile, "I have so many questions about your culture princess." He smiled bashfully, "I know I probably should be asking you in a more appropriate setting-"
"Yes, make an appointment for her office another time." Ming interrupted. She turned back to Korra, "You wouldn't happen to know-"
Korra suddenly sprung out of her seat like she had sat on something sharp. The three of them sat back abruptly and looked up at her confused and bewildered. She stood frozen for a moment, peering over to a crowd of people leaving one of the blackjack tables. As the group started out the exit her eyes followed the vision of a tall man in blue.
"Excuse me..." Korra said. She dropped the Pia-sho tiles as sure enough he was dressed in finely tailored native attire. "I'm sorry, I have to go!"
She quickly followed the sight of his blue suit jacket. She sped through the rest of the gaming tables and out into a separate anteroom where the smoke of cigars and floral scent of incenses filled her lungs. She waved the vapors away from her face and scanned the room anxiously. Above the sea of clustered heads and faces she saw the man again. From the back of his head she wasn't sure who he was, but his brown long braided hair was a dead give away that he was Water-tribe.
"Unalaq?" She whispered. There's no way...
-O-
Mako turned the corner to see that he was now in a large, multi-room dressing area. The girl he was following stood in the center of the floor waiting for him.
"If you were meaning to be discreet, creeping around here, you failed."
"Asami?" He asked in shock. He blinked just to make sure his eyes weren't deceiving him.
The woman let out a deep sigh, "Damn that girl must get around a lot..." She looked to a pile of costumes on the floor and scooped them up in her hands.
"Sorry, you just look like someone I know," He added eying her up and down. She had the same body type, similar height, length in hair.
She turned around, "I get that a lot. My name is Mae and who are you?"
Mako stilled, "I-I work here."
She dropped the pile of clothes she was carrying in a bin and crossed her arms. "No, no you don't."
Mako realized how ridiculous this all seemed. He was so out of his element here. As much as he blended in he still stuck out like a sore thumb.
She stepped up to him, matching his height in her tall, thin heels. "I'm only going to ask you again before I get you thrown out."
The detective clenched his jaw. "Who I am isn't important, although I am here for a reason. Maybe you can help me?"
Mae shrugged, "I've learned my lesson when it comes to helping strange men with favors..."
"All I want is information." Mako quickly replied, he had half a mind to show her his badge but realized that could go south really quickly. "I realize confidentiality is important here."
"It is..but what am I getting in return?"
Mako's shoulders dropped. Her secrets were probably way more than he could afford. "I-I'm sorry, I don't have anything."
Mae looked him up and down curiously, "What's your name..."
He gulped and thought it best not to lie to her. She oddly seemed trustworthy. "Mako."
"Hmm. You called me Asami, you know who she is? Like personally?" The escort was curious now. First Korra and Tahno, then Asami herself, and now this guy. There must be something big going on here and she needed to make sure she wasn't unintentionally involved.
"Yeah, we are actually good friends, dated for a small time, many many years ago. How do you know her?"
"She's a member here." Mae shrugged.
Mako looked shocked. Korra coming down here was believe-able but Asami?! "She's been here!"
"Yeah, I mean not often. Like very recently her and Prince Iroh came here to talk to-" She stopped, realizing she spoke too much.
Mako instantly noticed her hesitation. "Talk to who?"
Mae backed away, "That's above your jurisdiction"
"Mae please..."
She pushed him away, "Don't talk to me like I know you! I don't owe you anything. Especially not at the cost of my own safety." The escort stormed out of the closet leaving Mako puzzled and even more suspicious than before.
As "good" as Tahno and Korra's disguise was, he figured an official costume from the actual club might work out better to blend in. After a few minutes to change, he walked out dressed in a scantly clad butler uniform; Shirtless, black bow tie, white cuffs and black pants. The costume had very very short shorts, but there was no way he was putting those on.
He headed through a pair of large double doors and found himself in a darkly lit room where the sounds of faint moans accompanied the music. He looked to the floor, averting his gaze and hurried to the other side. He could hear the sounds of bodies slapping and smell the sweat in the air. This place was too much, far too overwhelming for a person with his taste. He peaked his head out the door, just incase he wasn't going further down a path of sexual exploits.
"Hey!"
He turned to find the voice,
"Hey! over here! What the hell are you doing?!"
Turning around he was met with another man dressed in the same uniform as him. "You know you're not supposed to be in here!"
The tall man with soft grey eyes grabbed Mako's arm and tugged him out of the room. "Oh-uh yes sorry I was lost."
"Right, well the next time you get 'lost' itll be your head! Varrick is here tonight and we don't need any fuck ups!"
"Varrick?" Mako repeated. The coordinator ignored him as they ventured into a large production kitchen. He handed Mako a tray of food and shoved him toward a flight of stairs. "Go play nice!" He smiled sarcastically.
Mako followed his orders while keeping his suspicions high...Varrick
He stepped into a room that was white and gold, covered from ceiling to floor in glittering, expensive decor. The people in this suite to his pleasure were fully clothed, dressed like they were at another formal gala. He observed the waiters and waitresses and mimicked their behavior. He politely walked amongst the elites and offered them the tray of carefully sliced appetizers.
There were private rooms here as well but he had a feeling this Varrick guy wasn't going to be hiding away. He continued to discreetly walk around the suite until he came to the far end of the room that had a terrace overlooking the city. A crowd of people sat on plush floor cushions encircling a man in the middle.
As they all burst into laughter Mako saw who was at the center of attention.
He finally found their Big Shot Water-Tribe Guy...
-O-
"Unalaq?" She whispered. There's no way...
He was on the move again, rounding a sharp corner at the end of the hall. She still couldn't quite see his face!
Korra ran after him, uncaring now if people glanced her way as she tore past them. She rounded the corner and outstretched her hand in hopes to stop him. "Unalaq!" She cried.
Suddenly a hand reached out from the dark and tore her away from the hall.
"Hey! Owe!" Korra whined as he tugged at her arm. "What's your damage!"
Tahno took a few deep breaths, "I've been looking for you for 45 fucking minutes. How the hell did you even-" He stopped, "You know what it doesn't matter."
He combed his hair out of his face and sighed. They were standing off to the side in a small dimly lit corner area. He glanced around the room eyeing the people around them. "Where's the wet wipe?"
"Stop calling Mako names." Korra threatened as she adjusted the wrinkles in her shirt. "And I don't know, we split up."
"Good!" Tahno dug into the breast pocket of his jacket as he scanned the area for onlookers.
"What is going on?" Korra asked.
"He's here." Tahno muttered. "I didn't know they'd be here tonight..."
"Who?" Korra asked.
Her friend handed her a thin but heavy, platinum credit card. "Congrats Korra you are now a member of the Secret Tunnel."
She took the card to see it was legit, her name was engraved in the design like a fatal contract.
"That card, graciously paid for by me, will get you into almost every room in this place. Except for the ones you shouldn't be."
Korra continued to examine the card, trying to explore his ulterior motives.
"This is a cover..."
"Yes!" Tahno shook his head like it wasn't obvious. "You need an alibi if shit hits the fan Korra! If you are lurking around where you shouldn't be they will not hesitate to remove you! You are a member now, a very exclusive one might I add. Now you don't need to be snooping around like fucking Bonnie and Clyde."
He combed his hair out of his face, still cautiously looking around them.
"What are you so anxious about?" Korra cocked her head to one side watching him closely.
Tahno swallowed harshly and looked down at her. "I told you I worked for someone right? Well he's a good man...good enough...I mean..I don't have any control over what he does or who he does it with..Half the time I don't even know what he's up to-If I had known I would have never associated with him in the first place-"
"What are you trying to say?" Korra whispered. She placed a gentle hand on his chest to help soothe his nerves.
"Just stay away from him okay?" He took her hand and laced their fingers together, "Get in and get out."
"Okay," She nodded.
He still seemed unsure, knowing good and well Korra was the definition of "curiosity killed the cat".
Korra cupped his face, "Okay."
Tahno finally allowed himself to breath normally, "Keep that in a safe place,"
"Right" Korra tugged on the neckline of her shirt and stuck the card into the cup of her bra.
"That'll work," He laughed. He took her hand again, "Let's head to the upper floor. I can introduce you to a few people who might have more information.."
"Wait." She ripped her hand out of his. "What about Mako?"
"What about him?"
She crossed her arms over her chest, "Wheres the membership for Mako?"
Tahno scoffed, "He's not getting one!"
"Tahno-"
"No," He shook his head sternly, "You heard what I said."
"So what happens if he gets caught!"
"He's a detective he'll get himself out,"
Korra shook her head and dug into her shirt to retrieve the credit card, "No, I'm not leaving him hanging!"
"Korra don't" Tahno rejected the credit card she tried to give back to him. "I'm just looking out for you"
"And what about him!" Korra shouted.
"I don't care about him, I care about you!" Tahno replied. He held his index finger over his face to remind them not to get too loud.
Korra pushed past him and back into the hallway.
"Korra-"
The princess turned to face him, "I do care about him. That's all that matters..."
She pressed forward in a bit of rage and unknowingly collided with another person. Several people gasped as the man she pushed stumbled on his feet.
"Sorry!" Korra apologized before realizing it was the man she was previously running after.
His sparkly entourage stopped cold and glanced at Korra like she was delusional. The tribesman in the middle of them stood upright and slowly turned around to face her.
Korra looked up at him with curious eyes..."Who...who are you?" He definitely was not Unalaq.
He looked down at her with a comically surprised and yet satisfied expression. "Korra...You look just like Tonraq...but you have your mother's eyes.."
She crossed her arms, "And you are?"
He laughed again, like mocking her skepticism. "My name is Councilman Tarrlock. I am a representative from the Northern Water Tribe here in Republic City. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."
He extended his hand and she hesitantly took it. He brought her knuckles up to his mouth and gently kissed the back of them.
"Northern Water Tribe, so you know my uncle?" She pulled her hand away from his lips.
"Of course, Unalaq addressed his concern about you here so far from home. From our traditional customs...And with the crown getting stolen, now was definitely the time for me to come back to Republic City"
Korra shifted her weight from one hip to the other, "I'm not sure what you mean by that.."
"I mean no offense," He placed his hand on his chest as if her accusation really hurt him. "We are both cut from the same cloth. I just mean I'm as concerned as he. You are our heir after all."
Korra dragged her tongue over the top row of her teeth, "Right well nice to me you...I should be-"
"Please I would love to talk somewhere else more private." He swept his hand toward another entrance at the end of the hall. His crowd of groupies stepped away to allow her talk walk in front of them. "I'm sure you have many questions for me..."
Korra sucked her teeth. Was this worth a detour from their investigation? Maybe he'd have information? Although, the vibe of this place made her weary of going anywhere private with men she just met.
"I don't think this is the best place to talk..."
Tarrlock chuckled with a small blush, "I assure you the upper rooms aren't nearly as scandalous..."
He turned and they all walked through the doors that lead into an enormous suite. The room what covered in gold and white, with glittering chandeliers and plush furniture. Korra followed behind and sure enough, everyone here was completely clothed, still dressed rather extravagantly but with less genitalia on display.
"This way," Tarrlock spoke, making sure Korra was still there. She nodded, following his lead.
They entered another room, smaller than the one they just left. It was dim but not dark with two twin love seats facing eachother. In the middle was a round, glass table topped with wine, meat, cheese, and al the other fancy foods Korra couldn't care less about.
They sat down and he closed the door behind them. Korra watched him attentively. His hair was long, falling down to the mid of his back. His shoulders were wide and hands large and veiny. He had a strong chin and yet a soft gaze. He was very tall for his age, she figured some-where in his mid 40's. Overall, he didn't seem so dangerous.
"I've been over seas for a while now, but your care-taker knows I am back in town."
"Tenzin?" Korra spoke.
"Yes...He represents the Air Nomads as one of the councilmen..Actually I have to thank you for filling in for me at the world's conference a few weeks back. He asked you to step in yes?"
"Yes he did, I just. He's never really mentioned you." Korra picked up a champagne glass and Tarrlock quickly moved to fill her glass for her.
Laughing he replied, "I don't see why he would, we argue more than we say hello..But all for the betterment of the city I assure you." He popped the cork on the bottle and began pouring.
"Tenzin has never even mentioned this place either.." She sat back with the cup and took a small sip.
"Because he doesn't know about it." Tarrlock replied. He poured himself a glass as well.
"Maybe for good reason." Korra sat up taller, keeping her guard up.
"Tenzin has his morals, as do all Republic City officials. His take is more traditional in a sense."
Korra tapped the glass, studying his deep blue eyes. "..And what is yours?"
"I'd rather be a player in the game than a pawn."
Korra clutched her cup a little tighter. He was more clever than he looked.
"And what is yours?" He questioned. "From what I know, you didn't take up politics here in the city."
"I didn't. Not until recently with the discovery of the crown..." She paused, eying him up and down. "You sure do know a lot about me."
"You're our only heir from the South Korra, its my duty to know you..."
"Right, Which brings me to my next question. You said Unalaq told you what was going on?"
"Yes he did, I've been in the North for the past few years, all my communications have been virtually. The council seemed to be running smoothly so it seemed. I fear if I was in the city instead of visiting home I might have prevented what had happened."
"How so?"
"Well with some form of a peace treaty, a thank you to the Fire Nation for allowing the city to house one of their most prized cultural finds..This narrative that one deserves it more than the other is only causing more of a rift."
Korra nodded enthusiastically, "I agree! I think the crown and the exhibit we are building around it might shed some light on the Fire Nation in a positive way. It was found in Southern waters, we could have been allies for all we know."
"Is that what you believe?" He tilted his head, watching her face with a bright glint in his eye.
"Yes! Back at the museum, Prince Iroh hired a historian who suggested perhaps Prince Zuko offered the crown as a testimony of his allegiance. That he was denouncing his family lineage with the intent to over throw his father..."
Tarrlock sipped his alcohol then clutched his hand over his chin, he enjoyed how passionate Korra was about their history. "That's fascinating and definitely probable."
"Forgive me but I really despise the way my uncle treats others that are not Water-tribe, especially those from the Fire-Nation. That mind-set is archaic and!-"
"This is your way of bridging that gap." He leaned forward and placed his palm on the bend of her knee.
Korra looked down at his hand then up at his face, "Yes, exactly..."
"I understand completely..and I couldn't agree more."
For the first time that night Korra genuinely smiled. It was good to finally feel seen, especially by one of her elders.
"Old habits die hard unfortunately," Tarrlock leaned back in his chair and Korra got a whiff of his cologne. Spice with hints of cedar and jasmine..
"I know. To be honest most of the hostility came from the South and my father. The Fire Nation seems way more willing and ready to move on."
"Of course the perpetrators of mass genocide and war want to wipe their hands clean of their reputation and history."
Korra looked at him shocked by how blunt he was.
"But that is not up to them." He finished.
He had somewhat of a point...
"Well...as of right now the people who are suspected to have stolen the crown are still at large." Korra confessed, she was starting to believe she could trust him.
"hmm, do you know if they have any leads?"
Korra pulled out her phone and scrolled through her photos. "This is most likely them..They were the White Lotus guards my uncle assigned to me during the world's conference.."
She handed him her phone, "Their water-tribe...That's unfortunate. Your uncle is involved?"
"No his alibi is solid, but their whereabouts is still unknown." She pointed to their pictures.
"It seems you were running out of options if you ended up down here.." Tarrlock studied their faces for a moment before giving her phone back. "I'll be sure to let you know of anything I discover."
Korra perked up a little, "Thank you, I would really appreciate that.."
There was silence for a few paces as Tarrlock just stared at her. It was then she realized just how much he had been ogling during their entire conversation.
"Well, I should be going." She stood up and stretched awkwardly before heading for the door. Tarrlock quickly got up and opened it for her. As they brushed past each other he paused with his body partially blocking the exit.
"There is someone I think you should meet Korra." His tone was as if to suggest that wasn't an invitation to deny.
She looked at him and smiled, trying not to seem suspicions. The night was coming to a close and she really needed to find Mako.
"Um I-" She dug into her bra and grabbed her credit card. Tarrlock averted his eyes while she did it. "I should head out now, I'm sure I can find my way..."
He looked at the card like it meant nothing to him.
"Oh don't worry, you won't need to pay." He smirked. "If it's information you want, this is the man to talk to." He took her by the bend of her arm and lead her out of the room.
"Oh, well I guess I can stay a few more minutes.." They strutted across the suite toward a lush veranda. Korra untied her crop-top and flattened it down, suddenly feeling underdressed as they approached such high profile people.
"Varrick!" Tarrlock annoucned. The crowd of people turned to invite them inside the circle. "I have the utmost pleasure of introducing you to Korra of the Southern Water Tribe!"
As Korra walked passed them she caught the eye of one of waiter's lingering in the background. She was relieved and comically amused to see him again, in less clothing than the last time they were together.
"Mako..." She breathed, very quietly under her breath. He gave her a small smile and held up his tray of food, still playing his 'role'.
Korra noticed the actress Ming from earlier in the evening. The woman winked at her playfully as she walked by. Her expression amused, like she knew something Korra didn't.
Varrick practically pranced up to Korra.
"The pleasure is absolutely mine!" He bent forward in an exaggerated bow. Standing up he smiled and cupped her hands. "Korra...it's truly an honor"
"Varrick...As in Varrick Industrial Industries...Deja Varrick Body Shoppe?"
His eyebrow perked in a mischievous smirk, "Oh so you're familiar with my work?"
Korra blushed, "I've dabbled..."
"Oh!" He laced his arm around hers and tugged her toward the circle of pillows. "Tell me about it! Ya'know we have a few prototypes underway that might tickle your fancy.."
"Really..." Korra cupped her mouth and leaned over to him, "Well your remote controlled vibrator does wonders.."
"One of our best sellers!" He plopped down on a cushion and Korra sat beside him. "Are you a vibration or penetration type ah' girl?"
"A bit of both," Korra replied, her face still red hot. She could never quite get used to how 'open' this place was. It was jarring but, refreshing.
"I knew I would like you!" He rejoiced.
"I do not think this is a conversation appropriate for our future sovereign.." Tarrlock interrupted.
"Come now! I see no children here!" Varrick waved him away.
The representative sat down across from them, shaking his head in disapproval. "Varrick you were never one for tradition and I'm afraid you'll rub off on her..."
"Korra is intelligent enough to make her own decisions, including her impeccable taste in sex toys." He winked, Korra laughed.
Tarrlock rolled his eyes, "The purpose of this introduction is more important."
Korra sat up a little taller, eyeing Tarrlock skeptically. "How would Varrick be able to help?"
The men glanced at each other as everyone laughed. Varrick turned to her confidently, "Dear I own this place.."
"Oh..." Korra shot a quick look to Mako as she finally realized who he was. She then remembered what Tahno told her...stay away from him
"Oh, I-sorry, yes I don't know how I didn't realize that."
"Everyone give us the floor" Tarrlock spoke and quickly their entourage and waiters began to leave the space.
Korra quickly panicked as Mako had no choice but to leave with them. "I am a bit hungry though!" She made up on the spot.
"Hold on, you there!" Varrick pointed at Mako, "Go bring us some refreshments will ya?"
He nodded, eyeing Korra before leaving back down the steps to the kitchen.
As Mako replaced the food and drinks on his tray Tahno stormed through the back doors. He stopped at the sight of Mako dressed like a stripper. "Oh. Sorry, I don't have any tips."
The detective turned, ignoring his crude joke. "Thanks for showing up to the party."
Tahno had half a mind to argue with him again. "You already look humiliating I'd rather not add insult to injury.."
Mako rolled his eyes, and turned back to preparing a few drinks to head back up stairs. He didn't want to miss the conversation Varrick was about to have with Korra. It had to be important if they wanted everyone else to leave.
"Where is Korra?"
Mako noticed how uneasy he sounded, "Why do you need to know? Is she in some kind of danger?"
Tahno bit his bottom lip, "No, not technically.."
Mako glared at him. "That's not an answer I want to hear."
"Where is she?" Tahno repeated.
"What are you not telling us?" Mako's eyes were like daggers peering into his face. If anything were to happen to Korra...he couldn't fathom the Hell he'd unleash.
"Where is she!"
"She's..up stairs.." He pointed to the spiral staircase on their left.
"Shit!" Tahno quickly left for the upper suite.
Mako quickly gathered the tray of food, something was about to happen and he needed to be prepared for it. As he headed for the stairs, someone stopped him.
"Mako?"
He turned around to see Mae standing behind him. Her eyes were a bit watery and shaken, like she was nervous. Two large security guards flanked her sides and Mako immediately knew what was going on.
His cover was blown...
He dropped the tray causing everyone to look over and scatter from the room as they saw what was about to go down. The detective clenched his fists, ready to put up a fight.
"I'm sorry..." She whispered.
-O-
"One of the richest men in the world, from our very own tribe.." Korra spoke.
"Yes," Varrick nodded, "A position I take personal pride in. The Water-tribe is often the most underestimated but I am determined to show the world just how powerful we actually are."
Tarrlock nodded in agreement.
"The work you've done in Republic City is commendable!"
"You're being too nice," Korra smirked, "I just work at the cultural museum..its not-"
"Oh but it is..If you want to persuade the masses-entertainment, media, education, is the best way to do it!" Varrick insisted.
"Korra and I were just discussing the Fire Nation exhibition being added, with the royal crown being a center piece,"
Korra nodded, "I'm sure you've heard-"
"Varrick!" Tahno clapped his hands as he quickly approached the trio. He passed a concerned look to Korra before addressing his co-owner.
"Le Pham, nice of you to finally join us..." Varrick eyed him curiously, "You've missed a few core meetings."
"Yeah, the bar has been taking up a lot of my time." He gulped. "I see you've met Korra."
"Oh you know each other?" Tarrlock asked.
"Yes, she's my best friend.." He looked at her sincerely.
"Of course she is.." Varrick smiled and Korra realized how faux his expression looked as opposed to before. "How else would she get a membership here with no knowledge of who I am..."
"That was my doing-" Tahno insisted.
"..Was her investigation your idea as well?" Tarrlock added.
"What!" Korra gasped.
Tahno reached out for Korra, "I think we should go now."
Korra hesitated to grab his hand, the room felt too tense to move.
"Not so fast..." Tarrlock spoke.
"Speaking about a stolen crown is not a crime! I'm sure if conversation was a justifiable offense, none of our hands would be clean.." Tahno replied.
Suddenly, a pair of men came into the room, dragging Mako like a limp doll. His arms were tied behind his back as they threw him down beside Tahno who stood standing in complete shock.
"Nice of you to join us detective," Tarrlock smirked.
Korra sat wide-eyed with her mouth hanging open in disbelief. Mako's face and chest was covered in cuts and bruises. The bouncers that brought him in were also badly beaten up so Mako definitely didn't go down easily.
Her gaze bounced between Tahno and Mako. How were they possibly getting out of this unscathed.
Varrick leaned over to Korra with an eery glint in his eyes.
"One thing to keep in mind about me Korra-" he smiled, "Nothing goes on around here without me knowing about it."
