AN: This part of the story runs alongside chapters 25-30 of Ahsoka and the Rebellion. But only selected events are covered that were not in that story during that part of the timeline. Here, we start to get an idea of why Valles was so willing to support Shaak in that story.

Chapter 39: The Queen and I

Lianna, Santhé Urban Palace, 0 ABY 0 months, 25 days, 6 hours

Queen Breha of Alderaan had been staying in her guest suite at the Santhé Palace in downtown Lianna City. It had now been over three weeks since the destruction of her home world and she was coming out of her protracted period of mourning. Valles Santhé, now the Queen of Lianna, had checked on her from time to time and was growing steadily more concerned. When she had visited earlier, Breha bravely kept up a moderately cheerful front, but Valles knew she was in a state of denial – and why not? Her whole world had been rudely swept away, along with her husband and many of her longtime friends and relations from the Houses of Organa and Antilles. Queen Vestalia had visited her too, attempting to reach out to someone who had become a close friend, but to little avail, as Breha was still greatly saddened. Vestalia had to return home to the Hapes Sector, as there were many things to do. When she had arrived, she met with her son Vaston and encouraged him to go to Lianna and reach out to Valles, if for no other reason than to congratulate her on becoming Queen. Vestalia sent word to Valles that he would be arriving in a day or two.

One morning, Breha left her suite and walked over to Valles's lavish royal suite of some 100 rooms. She knew the best time to catch the Queen would be early in the morning after the sun had just started to rise. At certain times of the year, the sun – which was referenced by spacefarers as Liannestra, and by Liannese as Kyall – would give off an eerie blueish glow as it came up over the horizon. Those Liannese who were a bit romantically inclined saw these times as fortunate, especially for young lovers, and many a marriage had been proposed on Blue Days. Breha, who had spent some time reading up on Liannese customs and folklore – as the planet had become her new home – decided this morning would be a good time to reach out to her hostess.

Knowing how Valles liked to spend mornings in her nightgowns and soft robes, Breha was similarly attired as she arrived at the entrance to the suite. The attendants summoned a repulsor for her and she then rode through the various rooms until she came to Valles's favorite morning spot. She hopped off the chair and strode over to the Queen, who had her back turned while gazing out on the outdoor roof terrace with a full view of the sun as it rose with its lovely blue hue that briefly turned the turquoise sky a deeper shade than usual.

"Oh, how lovely!" Breha exclaimed, causing Valles to turn around. "Valles, this is the first time I have seen one of these sunrises." Valles rose and came over to her, opening her arms and pulling Breha into a hug. The two ladies embraced and stayed that way for almost a full minute. As they released each other, Valles could see her guest's eyes were still somewhat red. I suppose she's ready to talk, I do hope we can move forward. Despite the tragedy, there are many ways she can be of use to me, plus she's become a friend. I'll do what I have to for her.

"Good morning, your Majesty," Valles chirped, as she smiled, then swiveled her body in the direction of the terrace door. "Would you like to get a better view?"

"I would indeed, dear. This is quite a treat. I know of no other planet where this kind of sunrise takes place. It's breathtaking."

Valles chuckled. "We see this about three times a year, sometimes only two. These last for a couple of days and we call them Lovers' Dawns. My grandfather first proposed to my grandmother on just such a morning."

Valles waved a hand and the terrace door opened, whereupon they both ventured outside. It was a delightful morning, with the temperature about 20 degrees above freezing (Celsius). Breha marveled at the lovely terrace floor, which had been inlaid with various mineral rocks and smoothed to a perfect surface. Valles smiled as she noticed Breha admiring the intricate detail.

"There are scenes from our history shown here," she pointed out. "Various accomplishments of our scientists, plus our greatest musicians are also honored here. We pride ourselves on being artistic people."

Breha nodded. "It's all so lovely. Valles, I am so glad we have become close friends. I'm not sure what I would do without you right now."

Valles smiled, and took Breha's right hand in her left, then swung it gently, in a relaxed manner that seemed to say, I'm here for you. Breha stared briefly at the blueish sun, noticing that it did not seem overly bright such that it would damage her eyes. Valles cautioned her gently.

"Be careful, dear, it might seem less harsh, but in a few minutes, it will rise and burn off this effect. You won't want to be gazing at it then."

Breha chuckled, "I suppose not."

She then turned her back to the sun and smiled. "Shall we go inside? I've just discovered I'm quite famished."

"Come, my dear," Valles laughed. "I've got just the thing."

As they sat down together, Breha helped herself to pastry and fruit, then noticed the fish pieces. As she sampled one, she found it quite tasty as it was prepared with a spicy pepper mix.

"I've noticed that your culture seems to love various water species to eat. Has it always been this way?"

"Indeed, Breha. We know this type of diet is most healthy and you see the kind of heavy meals they might have on certain other worlds. We raise most of them in our various lakes and fast flowing rivers. And now, the imported varieties from the amazing water worlds of Vaynai and Mon Cala have caught our fancy."

Breha nodded, "So the heavier meats from the bovine and porcine species aren't as in favor?"

"We found the cost of producing that here wasn't the best use of the land. For those who must have a hearty steak, we've started several cattle and boar ranches over on Pasmin."

Breha sighed as she gazed out the window again, then turned to Valles, this time more seriously.

"My friend, if you were in my position, how would handle it?"

Valles thought about this for a while and realized that Breha's tragedy was not something she had ever faced. How would I, indeed? Well, I'm not one to live in the past. The years run too short and the days too fast … She looked into Breha's eyes sympathetically.

"My dear, I would look for something, anything, really, to grab onto. It's so much to process and I wanted you to have your time to grieve. You've lost so much, but you have me. And I know Vestalia feels the same. We want to help."

Breha reached her hand toward Valles, who squeezed it gently. "I know, Valles. And I just need someone to talk to and you're a good listener."

"So, where do we start? If you'd like, I would want to honor Bail as a friend to the Galaxy and to Lianna as well. Before all the current developments, he had always reached out to us. I know Willis misses him; they'd been good friends during his Republic Senate days."

"Oh yes, Bail had told me that Willis was a good man, and he will make a fine Prime Minister … Valles, have you heard anything about my daughter? I have the feeling that Leia was not on Alderaan when the attack came."

Valles paused for a second. "She's with the rebels, right? Then she's likely wherever they went. I was able to learn they were using Yavin IV as a base, but they've likely cleared out of there. My source said she was being held on the Death Star but that a few rebels broke her out and they got away. I'm sure she would greatly care that you are here and safe."

Breha sighed. "I do hope your source is correct, Valles. If I still have Leia, it will do me some good."

As they both finished their breakfasts, Valles rose and smiled at Breha,

"My friend, let's get dressed and I'd like you to accompany me. There are some things to talk about and I think you would get some value from it."

Breha then also stood up, and replied, "I'd like that, dear Valles. It's time for me to face forward. Just because my queendom is gone doesn't mean my life is over. I'd like to consider some new pathways."

"That's the spirit …" Valles smiled, then patted her friend on the shoulder. "See you in about half an hour? This isn't formal, just throw on a comfortable dress and brush your hair a little. You'll be great!"

Breha laughed loudly. Valles was trying her best to put her at ease, while offering comfort and support. She's really a good friend to have. I need to learn where Leia is so I can let her know I survived.

Falleen, Prince Xizor's office, 0 ABY, 1 month, 2 days

Xizor and Qi'ra were discussing recent Galactic events, while openly wondering how these were going to break for Black Sun. They agreed that the loss of the Death Star and much of the Imperial command could present a golden opportunity. Whisky shots were downed and a spice pipe was fired up. They were sitting at a conference table that had a small (60 cm) monitor screen mounted on it. Xizor pulled up a map of the Galaxy's eastern Outer Rim, then posed a question.

"Well, Qi'ra, it appears our Liannese friends have come on board in a partnership with us over Eol Sha and the Clouzon find. I've recently received a ten million credit payment from Duchess Ana."

"Ah, very good," Qi'ra said with a smirk. "I knew she was someone we could trust."

"Do you think she will continue to work with us? Assuming Countess Ry Kyver is in on the deal."

"Why not? Of course, we don't know just how much of the stuff might be there, but I've learned one thing about Kyver – she's an expert on planetary engineering. They may want to further study both Eol Sha and its moon."

Xizor took a drag on the pipe and exhaled. "But you realize they aren't likely to come across with more funds. They don't need our services for anything further on Eol Sha … however …"

"Yes?" Qi'ra snapped her head forward.

"Now that the Death Star is kaput … I would expect our friend Valles to propose a rebuild, with her firm doing the work. The old man will likely bite hard on it."

"Sure."

"So, Qi'ra, we need to find out how fast that project is moving, and exactly what they will need in the way of resources. Santhé Corp is expert at mining whole asteroids, using their giant ships for efficient mineral extraction. If we could somehow get involved with that procurement process, it would be a feather in our cap …" he laughed, feeling pleased. "I'll send you your cut of the payment, as you basically made it possible. Working your way into Liannese society is paying off. Those people are rather selective when it comes to whom they do business with."

"I'll say," Qi'ra remarked. "Ana actually felt sympathy for me when she learned I came from Corellia. The Liannese are as snooty as anyone I've met from the Core. But I like Kyver, she's a different sort, coming from Mandalore."

"But Ana seems to trust you, yes?"

"I think so. She's a cagey sort, however, keeps her cards close to the vest. A formidable opponent, but a valuable friend to have on that planet."

Xizor nodded. "With Valles becoming the formal monarch there, it means Ana is going to have even more importance. We've got to keep her happy, and that, my friend, is where you come in. When I think of all you've done in past few years to make Crimson Dawn a true player in the Galaxy, I know you'll handle it."

Left unspoken, of course, was Xizor's dream of becoming the "maximum leader" of Black Sun, a dream that he saw as possible with Liannese help. He was sharp enough to know that Valles only cared about things that would further increase her power, therefore he saw Duchess Ana as being the one Liannese noble that might be amenable to Black Sun if they could help her emerge as Valles's Number Two. Valles wants to take Palpatine's place as the Galactic Empress and if she does, Ana will want to succeed her as Queen of Lianna, so anything we can do to make Ana look better in Valles's eyes will be good for us – and for me.

But Xizor also understood was that he was generally unwelcome in Liannese society, which generally looked down on criminal syndicates, seeing itself as representing the "civilized" part of the Outer Rim. Try as he might, there was little he could ever do to erase that taint in their eyes. Ah, but Qi'ra was different. She had a flair for saying the right things and the right accent to be listened to on Lianna, given her friendship with Countess Kyver. Just have to keep working these connections. Qi'ra greatly admires Valles, and nothing the Queen likes more than those who idolize her.

Lianna, Santhé Corp Main Orbital Platform, 0 ABY 0 months, 25 days

Queen Breha was being shown around some of the Santhé shipbuilding and component manufacturing facilities, which were located in the orbital space above the planet in a series of three rings that circled the entire planet and extended for thousands of kilometres. All manner of spacecraft (for military and civilian usage) were in various stages of construction and these works were carefully coordinated with Corporate Sector worlds Tirsa and Issagra. As she stared – wide-eyed – at the expanse of the platform, she had many questions, which Valles patiently answered.

"This is incredible, your Majesty … how long did it take to complete it?" Breha asked first.

"The main, center ring was started almost five thousand years ago, and there has been advanced civilization on our planet for about double that time. The center ring was completed first, and parts of the northern and southern rings are still somewhat empty, but the key factor is they all have to rotate in harmony with the planet, which is more complex than you might think at first. It's also how we can ensure a constant gravitational force throughout the complex."

As they approached in the shuttle craft, Breha gave a low whistle as she peered out the viewport. "So, you build cruisers and Star Destroyers here, for the Empire?"

"Not quite," Valles answered. "The larger ships are still mostly assembled on Kuat, where my good friend Lira Wessex designed many of the prototypes. Her family goes back many generations. We do much contract work in concert with them and then deliver various components used in the ISD and SSD craft. The cruisers are usually constructed for system- or sector-wide use by various clients, such as the Corporate Sector Authority."

"That's very impressive, Valles. Is it all owned by Santhé Corp?"

"No, not all of it. In fact, many firms have contributed to its construction and all kinds of work takes place out here. Not many realize this, but we are among the leading producers of droids in the Galaxy. Several firms compete in this area and we think that's healthy. But, Santhé Corp dominates in the building of military and security vessels, while other makers produce private craft for various buyers, which include corporations and wealthy individuals. My own yacht, Bella Donna, was constructed here about ten years ago, and I keep it docked here when not using it – which is less often these days. It seems I am wanted everywhere …" She tossed her head back and laughed.

"So where are you taking me today?"

"Oh, to my orbital palace. It's not on the scale of my larger residences on the planet, but it's quite comfortable and I believe you will enjoy it."

"Ooh," Breha squealed softly. "I always wondered what it might be like to live in orbit."

"Well," Valles laughed. "Maybe you will like the chance to learn about it. You'll find it quite comfortable."

"I'm kind of excited about it," Breha gushed. She looked at Valles fondly. I don't know why some on my planet were so suspicious of you, it seems you are one the kindest people I've ever met … still, I can tell you are rather shrewd and calculating, which is to be expected from someone in your position, as everyone wants a piece of your time.

The shuttle, a ship marked with the new "VSR" (for Valles Santhé Reigns) designator now being used by the newly established Lianna Crown for all of Her Majesty's various vehicles and properties, took a short trip about one-tenth of the way around the center ring and, upon arrival, entered a pressurized and gravity-enabled landing bay. The two queens debarked and were received as monarchs were customarily received. The attendants bowed low, then Valles nodded her head in acknowledgement.

"Good morning, gentlemen. Breha and I will proceed to my suite."

"Very good, your Majesty."

Valles declined the offer of a two-seat repulsor throne, preferring to walk. Breha smiled and happily walked alongside her hostess.

"A good idea to use one's legs when possible," Valles chuckled. "I'm sure you agree, dear."

"Exactly … otherwise they would just shrivel up and disappear. In that theme, I was glad to see Vestalia looking a little trimmer."

Valles's expression turned serious for an instant, then she laughed. "I was, too. But don't expect her to start walking anytime soon. She is in fairly good shape, despite appearances. Her natural strength is formidable."

"Oh, I don't doubt that. Her arms are massive …"

Valles chuckled. "I've become rather close to her, as you may have noticed. But, enough about her … let me give you a tour of my orbital residence."

As they entered, Breha was immediately struck by how cozy the suite was. The orbital ring upon which it was located was massive, extending almost two kilometres in width (or height) by one kilometre in thickness (or girth). The Chairlady's private space consisted of about thirty rooms of various sizes and was maintained by a staff of about ten people. They made sure that Valles's wardrobe was kept ready for her, while her kitchen was stocked with whatever she might feel like eating. In the spacious main rooms, there were various screens that afforded views of the planet below and other parts of the orbital platform, while there were some direct views of the Lianna surface from observation – about 400 km up. Much of Valles's private space was very much like a home down on the surface, featuring wooden floors with soft rugs in the bedrooms, and elegant tile mosaics on the floors of the bathrooms and kitchen area. Breha asked many questions and was amazed at all of the detailed planning that had gone into the construction of the platform and concluded it was, in many ways, an extension of Lianna City below, as perhaps a million people lived and worked on it, in various capacities.

Breha began to realize this was an excellent place to stay, as it offered a great deal of privacy and was likely one of the last places anyone would look for her – if they even knew she had settled on Lianna at all. She continued to look around and was amazed at the seemingly never-ending parade of opulence that Valles could offer and how sophisticated an Outer Rim world could be. She stopped, and turned to Valles.

"My friend, I would love to stay here for a bit, but also continue to stay down in the City. Lianna is a beautiful place and I think, for now, it should be my home. And, because you are such a wonderful hostess and a kind-hearted person, I would like to return the favor and offer my experience for any situation you might encounter during your time on the throne of Lianna … you may find it most useful."

Valles smiled and took both of Breha's hands in hers. "I would love that. Yes, I'm certain you have much wisdom for me and you may stay on Lianna in my homes as long as you wish. We are gratified to have you. The Empire might come looking for you, but I will see to it that no one here gives away your presence – you are safe with me."

Breha smiled and nodded. "Thank you, ever so much, Valles. With your permission, I would like to use some of your space up here for my wardrobe and cosmetics. I'm planning on a big shopping expedition in the City and I think I can move about unmolested as most likely don't recognize me."

"That will be fine, dear, but perhaps you would prefer to have the stores and designers come to you. I can arrange for that to happen at the Santhé Palace."

"Perhaps, Valles, but I just want to get out for a while, and see some of the City on my own. It should be perfectly safe."

Valles chuckled. "Yes, that's another thing about our world. There is almost no poverty at all and people are usually helpful to strangers – of almost any sentient species, though our population is about 95 percent human."

Valles then escorted Breha to a lovely restaurant on the platform that was a short distance from her orbital palace. Once they had finished their meal, they returned to the shuttle and descended to the planet below, eventually going to the suburban Santhia palace, where Breha started to lay out her plans for the next few months.

Felucia, Shaak's home, 0 ABY 3 months, 14 days, 22 hours

Shaak Ti (now Grand Master of the Order) called Master Ahsoka Tano (who was given the title when she first joined Shaak over two years prior), and Knight Maris Brood (who was getting closer to Master status herself) to her home one night. She decided it was time to bring her two most trusted people up to speed on where she stood with Valles Santhé. As they both entered, they each curtsied to Shaak and then followed her into her now enlarged home, whereupon they each took seats in the main room and looked to the Master, who took her position on something that resembled a throne.

"My children, it is time now that you understood our next stage of the rebellion. It has now been over three months since we defeated the Empire at Yavin and destroyed their "death star" battle station. Since then, we have successfully transferred our base of operations to another sector and have struck a few further blows against the Empire, including the mission led by you, Ahsoka, at Cymoon 1. We are going to take a further step as I am contracting with the Santhé-Sienar organization to purchase several ships."

Maris simply nodded, figuring Shaak would explain the move in more detail, but Ahsoka spoke up first.

"Master Shaak, this seems like a change. Santhé-Sienar is one of the Empire's key suppliers and shipbuilders. Why would they take a contract with us?"

Shaak smiled, then glanced at Maris, who looked straight ahead, her expression non-committal.

"That's what I'm going to explain to you both. It turns out that I have been working with the leader of that company, who has also crowned herself Queen of Lianna. I am referring to Valles Santhé."

Maris spoke up finally. "This is an interesting development. How long have you known her, Master?"

"For just over four years now. As I've come to know her, I've found her to be most intelligent and quite charming … but more than that, she has indicated to me her support of the rebellion."

Ahsoka was visibly shocked by this revelation and her lekku changed color slightly. "Mother (she referred to Shaak in this way, as the older Togruta had taken her in as an adoptive daughter), this is quite shocking to me. Why would she betray the Empire to help us?"

Maris leaned forward, awaiting Shaak's response. Clearly the answer would be of great interest.

Shaak chuckled softly. "My children, this little meeting we're having ought to answer some questions. It's time to lay out the grand plan for both of you. Simply put, Valles Santhé desires to become the Galactic Empress, and she knows that we intend to overthrow the current occupant on the throne."

"And we're going to help her?" Maris interjected, as was often her habit.

"Partially," Shaak replied. "I'm going to provide more detail on this in the weeks to come. Just know that we are going to take a more active role in the rebellion, now that we have over 60 members and acolytes in the Order. Since the Battle of Yavin and the decision by Lord Vader to join with us, we now are in a position to lay out a new strategy. I have been using the intelligence and surveillance capabilities that we have in place – over these many years from their first installation – to start laying the groundwork with Emperor Palpatine in a psychological fashion. I have been able to plant seeds of doubt in his brain. But … and this may be even more important over the long run … I have recordings of him speaking aloud to himself and muttering about "the Guides" and his coming replacement – on the Galactic throne, most likely."

Ahsoka looked at Maris for second, but the Zabrak was as confused as she was.

"Mother, this is incredible. But let me understand. You're saying we're going to overthrow Palpatine and you think it's now possible. When might we be able to do this?"

"Not just yet," Shaak answered softly, "but soon. I've been studying about some ancient uses of the Force that I believe he will be unaware of. And if we oppose him as a team, we could be successful, but I'm not yet ready to conclude anything. I do believe that he is becoming mentally unbalanced, and I want to see if he might become even more so."

Maris whistled softly. "Master, this is most intriguing. I wish Varda were here, I'd love to get her reaction."

"Hmm!" Ahsoka grunted, starting to smile. "Yeah. I'm sure she'd have an opinion. But, Mother, I do hope you are right. If we can take him down, that would be fabulous."

"Only one thing, though," Maris pointed out. "Valles Santhé. Is she the one to replace him?"

"We shall see," Shaak smiled. "But I am heading over to Lianna tomorrow to meet with her. And I will lay out our needs regarding the Santhé Corporation and all."

"Can we afford what you're going to ask for?" Ahsoka inquired.

"We can, and, as I have informed you prior, the Order can now lay its hands on billions of Imperial credits, partly due to our friends on Muunilinst."

"Do you trust the Muuns?" Maris interjected again.

"Mostly," Shaak chuckled, "but I've set up various accounts on other planets as well, one of them being Lianna itself."

"So it's an easy transfer," Ahsoka laughed. "I like the way you think, Mother."

"And that's not all," Shaak continued. "My relationship with Liannese Duchess Berit has resulted in some very timely investment wins with various Lianna-based businesses and their subsidiaries in the Corporate Sector and elsewhere on the Eastern Outer Rim. It seems our friend Valles – and I want both of you to see her that way – has been quietly moving to take over more and more of the Galaxy over the past few years. It's really quite impressive how clever she is."

"When do we get to meet her?" Ahsoka asked, and Maris nodded in response, clearly wanting to know. The name of Valles Santhé had come up in various conversations they had over the past few years.

"Fairly soon," Shaak answered. "I will inform both of you." She took a deep breath and exhaled, then stood up, indicating the meeting was over. "I've got to get my rest, to be ready for tomorrow."

"Good luck, Mother," Ahsoka smiled. Maris nodded again, then added, "May the Force Be with You, Master."

Lianna, Duchess Berit's Estate, 0 ABY 3 months, 15 days, 17 hours

The next morning, Shaak sent a text to Duchess Berit, who replied swiftly. Berit knew that Shaak Ti was now more important than ever to Her Majesty the Queen and figured it could only improve her own standing to be on good terms with her.

"Message received, Master Ti. I can meet with you in the City and send word to the Queen. I'm sure she will be happy to see you," read the response.

Satisfied, Shaak changed into an elegant silk and velvet ensemble and then boarded the Intrepid V, making it ready for the trip. When she left Felucia, she usually delegated control to Maris or Ahsoka, but they in turn delegated to Frehya, who had become Shaak's executive assistant in the Order and was an excellent manager. Soon, the Intrepid had lifted off and quickly made the jump to hyperspace, arriving in Liannese space about fifteen minutes later. Picking up the com, Shaak indicated she was meeting with Duchess Berit, who had earlier reserved a landing slot for her in the City.

Lianna City was located at about 33 degrees north latitude, placing it roughly in between the northern and central orbital platforms, giving it an unobstructed view of the heavens above, but there were various landing facilities for small starships and shuttles all over the City and speeder traffic was made to detour around these. Most of this traffic was conducted relatively close to the ground and was greatly restricted, so that views were not obstructed. For the most part, vehicles were controlled by self-driving mechanisms that kept traffic moving smoothly. The main avenues and boulevards in town accommodated up to four levels of traffic that were carefully programmed as the demand increased or decreased during the day. Shaak was directed to land the Intrepid at a facility on the north side of the City, about 10 km away from the Santhé Tower and the Santhé Urban Palace, where Berit planned to meet her.

Upon landing, Berit soon appeared, wearing an elegant fur robe, as it was winter in this section of the planet's northern hemisphere. Shaak debarked from her ship, and soon felt a chilling wind as the Liannese sun shone brightly. Berit greeted her and soon noticed the Togruta was shivering in the cold. Oh my, she thought, I need to help her.

"Welcome back to Lianna City, Master Ti. I can see you were unprepared for our winter season here."

Shaak laughed. "Yes, I had better get indoors."

Berit approached her and the two hugged.

"Not to worry, friend, I've got just the thing."

They hurried over to the Duchess's shuttle and quickly boarded it, as Berit punched in the coordinates for her estate. As they became airborne, Berit offered a heavy fur to Shaak, who happily took it and pulled it on over her velvet robe.

"Very nice," she said softly.

"Do your people wear fur on Shili, much?"

"My mother certainly does, but much of it is imported from other worlds, as we don't have that many species of fur-bearing animals. I'm told that Shili once had a milder climate than it does today."

They soon arrived at Berit's estate and the palace was decorated for the winter holiday season. Things were often festive at this time of year and northern Liannese liked to celebrate with various parties and gift-giving. Shaak took note of this and asked about it.

"Your home seems rather decorative, compared to the prior times I've visited."

Berit nodded, as they debarked from the shuttle and walked across the platform toward the palace entrance. A bitter wind whipped up and Shaak was grateful for the fur coat.

"Shaak, we northern people here like to celebrate during some of the coldest days of the winter. It's a time we call Taig-Ober and it represents our hardiness and careful preparation from days past – thousands of years ago. So we like to present gifts to each other in appreciation of our fellowship and friendship. The children are also taught about this period so they may be proud of their heritage on our common world."

"Very interesting," Shaak replied. "I suppose there might be different traditions in Ana's part of the planet?"

"Indeed there are, Shaak, but I would rather have her tell you about them. Tropical Liannese are very proud of their many varieties of fruit trees and groves. They are a fun-loving people that spend much time outdoors, as it's usually warm all year round. We from the north see life differently but respect our fellow Liannese as we each have much to offer each other and stay united as a planet."

As they entered, Shaak noticed many cheerful decorations around the common areas of the palace and adorning the stairways that led to the second level. The color scheme seemed to mostly focus on various shades of blue and white, but there were some greens and violets as well. They were greeted by other Liannese who were visiting the Duchess's palace, and Berit explained that, during this season, her home was opened to other families in the nearby area. Many wore fur hats that were quite traditional at this time of year.

"Come, Master Ti, we shall go up to my more private space. I know you have something you want to discuss."

"Thank you, Duchess. I love your home and the ways of your people. There seems to be much warmth and kindness here."

"Yes, Shaak. In fact, when the evening comes, some of us like to partake of some special beverages that lighten the mood – another tradition."

Shaak chuckled about that. It seems this is one thing people from all over the Galaxy have in common.

They soon reached the sixth level via the lift and Berit led Shaak into a study area, one that had many volumes on shelves that were placed between the windows. A glance outdoors showed the sun shining off the lake, which was only partially frozen over.

Berit and Shaak were seated and she then poured some hot tea for them both. As Shaak took it, she noticed its nutty flavor and wondered about the recipe. Shaak then opened the discussion.

"Berit, I've come here today because I want to contract with Santhé Corp for some ships. Valles is likely aware of what I am looking for, but these would be light cruisers and strike craft. Your Defender line is most attractive."

"I see," the Duchess said, as she nodded. "Yes, Valles had indeed mentioned your needs in this area. We had come to understand that your group is transforming Felucia. And … that you are involved with the rebellion."

Shaak simply nodded. "You are correct. But I have also come to realize that Her Majesty is quietly supporting it as well. At the current time, however, I am more interested in obtaining these assets for defensive purposes only."

"That is fine with us, Shaak. Valles told me to take your order and I would relay it back to her and she will see that it is taken care of by the necessary divisions of the firm."

"Berit, if you don't mind my asking, do you hold a formal position with Santhé Corp?"

"Not at this time. I do own a fairly large block of the stock, and this was part of my inheritance from my late father, who was the Duke of Bergamia before me – only his title then was more ceremonial."

"Oh? That's news to me. I had been informed that only in the last few years had the Liannese nobility been restored."

"Yes, Shaak, that is true – from the standpoint of our role in the governance of Lianna. But our titles are still hereditary, and they reflect past centuries of our world. We were, of course, greatly gratified when Valles moved to restore our prior roles – it had been more than 100 years since that day."

Shaak nodded and chuckled slightly. "I would imagine she did this knowing how grateful you would also be when she decided to name herself Queen. It helps to have a loyal body of people who will essentially endorse her prerogatives."

Berit laughed, somewhat conspicuously. "No argument there, Shaak. But the fact remains she is very popular among the population overall … in the City and in most places around the planet. Valles is seen as the leader that we deserve and she always puts the interests of Lianna first."

Shaak nodded again and sipped her tea, then changed the subject. "Berit, about my order. We are interested in purchasing ten light cruisers – each with a capability of holding up to 25 strike craft – and these should be equipped with a class 1.0 hyperdrive and there should be up to 25 ports on each side to hold laser cannon emplacements. In addition, a complement of 200 of the Defender series interceptors, and one other capability that I wish to discuss personally with the Queen. I need to know when we might be able to start taking delivery of these ships."

"I understand, Master Ti." Berit nodded as well. "Valles will likely want to work that out with you. Perhaps you wouldn't need these all at once?"

"Yes, I am flexible in that area."

"Great. Shaak, we would be honored if you might stay overnight with us here, and then we go to the City in the morning. I've checked my schedule, and the Queen's, and she will have some time for you tomorrow. She sends word that she is most pleased that you have again come to Lianna and is happy to do business with you."

"Very well," Shaak laughed. "I look forward to seeing her again soon."

Berit then showed Shaak to a guest suite, whereupon the Togruta took the time to wash and bathe herself, while doing some meditation. Soon after, she was off to bed and slept peacefully through the night.

Lianna, the City, 0 ABY 3 months, 16 days, 11 hours

The next morning, Shaak awoke and dressed herself, then waited for Berit. The Duchess was meeting with some of her palace staff, then she contacted Shaak and asked her guest if she would like to join her for breakfast. The Togruta agreed, so long as some of the food offering was meat-based. Berit soon realized that the Togruta preferred to eat meat and green vegetables for the most part and had little taste for grain-based treats such as various pastry or cereals. Still, she was able to please Shaak with a spicy bacon-like selection and a whole egg from a native Liannese waterfowl. Shaak apologized for having such particular tastes, but Berit insisted that Shaak was her guest and should be able to eat what she liked.

After the awkwardness of breakfast was out of the way, Shaak then asked, "do you think I am presentable to Queen Valles with what I brought with me?"

Berit chuckled at this for a second, then answered, "Valles isn't worried about that, she has high regard for you. And you look great as it is. She always says Togruta are a very elegant species."

Shaak laughed, "well, I don't think everyone sees us that way."

Berit nodded. "It's their loss, then."

Shaak simply donned the same outfit she'd traveled to Lianna in, knowing fully well that Valles wouldn't much care anyway. She's all business most of the time, though she tries to cover it with a veneer of mock elegance. Yet the people of her planet seem to basically worship her. Still, I think I like her.

Soon, Berit and Shaak had boarded the Duchess's shuttle for the ride to the City, about an hour away. It was not necessary for anyone to pilot their own craft to travel around Lianna, as all aerial traffic was controlled by various systems that featured relay points at various locations, some on the ground, some in orbit. The system always chose the correct route based on desired destination and existing traffic flow. No one currently alive on the planet had actually driven their own speeder nor piloted a shuttle, due to this system, which had been in place for at least three centuries. While relaxing in her suite at Berit's palace, Shaak had found a short book that explained some of the various aspects of life on the planet, which she read with interest.

Shaak thought about these details on their way to the City. Much of life on Lianna is heavily regulated and it seems to bother no one. If only Coruscant was as well organized as this place. Weather is controlled by another system, though I'm not entirely sure how it works, as the book didn't go into detail. All of the water here is controlled as well and carefully maintained. Some of this seems quite sensible. I wonder how long it took to get everything set up. But one thing is certain, it's basically lovely, especially for those who are in high positions here. Yet there seems to be no poverty at all, unless it's very well hidden.

The plan was to meet with Valles in her expansive royal suite on the top level of the Urban Palace and the shuttle landed atop the building. Berit helped Shaak up and they exited the shuttle by stepping on a small platform that lowered them to the rooftop of the palace. They soon headed inside and down a wide staircase that placed them very near Valles's private quarters.

"Queen Valles is expecting us, so we can just head right in to her reception area and wait," Berit noted.

Shaak nodded and followed her in. They soon were seated in a comfortable area with several luxurious sofas arranged in various patterns. Each of these was covered in light brown Pasmin goat leather that was very soft. A few minutes later, Valles emerged, wearing a long glittering turquoise gown that bared her shoulders, while her legs were visible due to its high slit up the right side. A servant followed her out to the reception area, carrying a turquoise fur robe. She stood waiting as Valles approached her guests.

As Berit rose and curtsied, Valles extended her right hand, which Berit duly kissed. Shaak was unsure whether she was expected to do the same, but Valles seemed unconcerned. She then spoke.

"Shaak Ti, it is wonderful to see you again. You look well. Did the trip over here meet with your expectations?"

Shaak chuckled. "It was excellent, your Majesty. I'm pleased to see you again, as well, Valles, and I want to congratulate you on becoming Queen of this beautiful planet."

"Thank you so much, Shaak. So I understand … from Berit here … that you have placed an order with us."

"I have, indeed."

Valles smiled, then nodded. "Very well, then. Let's go somewhere where we can talk privately. Berit, thank you for looking after our guest while she was in your company. I trust you were well cared for, Shaak?"

Shaak laughed. "It was wonderful. Berit is a fine hostess."

Valles winked at the Duchess. "She is at that …" then proceeded to lead Shaak through a series of doors and then arrived at an intimate little room with two luxurious chairs and a small table between them that contained a holo screen that presumably could be used as needed by the Queen and whomever she was sharing the room with.

"This area is most secure, Shaak. No one may listen to us and whatever we discuss is not recorded – unless you might want it to be."

"That will not be necessary, Valles. I trust you."

"Very good. So … I've reviewed the order and I find it interesting. Yes, we can meet the timetable you are suggesting and have the first of your ten cruisers in about three months. We will provide twenty of the Defender series with it. But, might I ask, what is the plan for all of these craft?"

"Valles, at present, I want these to be used for planetary defense only, with some future uses still being decided."

Valles smirked at this. "I understand you are involved with the rebellion, and with Bail Organa's untimely death, you are now the effective leader. Do I have that correct?"

Shaak thought about this for a second, then responded. "You do. I have found it necessary to assume that role."

"I see. So then, I guess the real question is this – how do you suppose your rebellion will be successful?"

"I have a plan, Valles, but it is not entirely complete. I will need these ships as part of the plan, but that's all I am prepared to say at this point."

Valles was mulling it over. Indeed you do, Shaak, and I'm beginning to grasp what it is. These armaments you are purchasing aren't for any direct attack – because even one ISD is going to be too much to handle – but appear more to be part of some decoy operation. I'm already aware of what you and your associate Tano can do using the Force and I have to believe that will be part of it as well.

She then asked, "Shaak, I have to ask this ... let's say you are successful in overthrowing Palpatine. What is the plan after that? Surely you don't believe the Empire is simply going to roll over and allow the Republic to be reestablished."

Shaak then thought about it. Valles, of course you are correct, and I imagine you might already know what I want to do, and you are also correct about the Republic. My fellows in the rebellion haven't seemed to give it much thought about what they exactly expect to do, either. But you likely have a plan of your own and being Queen of this lovely world is not where it ends.

"Valles, I cannot argue with that, either. However, I don't want to get into longer range discussions at this point, though there will come a time for that. I will say this much: I need your help – no matter how this all goes."

"And you shall have it, Shaak."

The two of them relaxed a little, and the Queen signaled for some tea to be brought to them. "Would you care for some tea and maybe a bite of something, Shaak?"

"Thank you, Valles. Yes, I would."

When it arrived, the servant poured some for both of them and then left the pot with them. Valles motioned to some small biscuits that contained something like chocolate and were covered in powdered sugar. Shaak peered at them with interest.

"I thought you might like these, Shaak. They are crisp and light, with a hint of sweetness, and the filling is from the refined paste of a bean species that grows in the tropics – they come from Duchess Ana's estate."

Shaak sampled the unique pastry, and found it very much to her liking. "Delicious!" she exclaimed.

"Have as much as you like, my friend." Valles offered. "Now, I've been thinking about all you are doing on Felucia, and when you mentioned making changes in the planet's overall climate and such, I realized I might have just the person to help you with that."

"Oh?" Shaak leaned forward with interest. I'm not surprised, consider how the Liannese have engineered their own planet over the centuries, there are likely more than a few with expertise in that area.

"Yes, she is close to Duchess Ana, whom I believe you've not yet met, correct?"

"No, I have not."

"Well, she is from the tropical district of Livornia and there is a certain countess that reports up to her in the new organization of the Lianna Peerage. This lady has become expert at it, in fact, we are considering a complete makeover of the desolate planet of Malachor."

That mention got Shaak's attention, as she had been there somewhat recently. "I didn't realize you were thinking of adding that one to your dominions, your Majesty. It doesn't seem to have the utility of some of your other worlds, such as Raxus or Vaynai."

Valles chuckled. You surely do your homework, Master Ti … "That is true. But I have a vision for it, one that might take a few months to achieve, were we to start work on it."

"Ah," Shaak said softly, then laughed.

"Right … so it may well be that Countess Kyver could consult with your people on your makeover of Felucia. I take it you would like for that planet to have something more resembling seasons?"

"That's right, Valles, but I've wanted this transformation to proceed most gradually."

"Sure, I understand. These things are very delicate and require a gentle touch. Countess Kyver understands that, and she will be more than happy to work with you and your organization – as a favor to me, of course."

"Okay, Valles, that might be promising. Would it be possible to meet with the Countess before I head back to Felucia?"

"Yes, Shaak, I could set that up for you."

Lianna, Santhia suburban palace, 0 ABY 3 months, 16 days, 18 hours

Later that night, Shaak met with Duchess Ana in Valles's suburban palace (Santhia), where Valles acquainted her with Shaak and her needs, along with that of the rebellion. Ana was a little confused at first, and then realized that Valles was quietly supporting the rebellion and that Shaak was effectively the real leader of it. They started chatting, and Shaak learned a little more about Lianna and the role Ana's family played in its history, and also the kind of life in tropical areas of the planet such as Livornia, which was Ana's home area and had been for her ancestors going back centuries. Shaak found Ana to be likeable and she opened up to her about Shili and her family there.

Valles took a few minutes to converse with Countess Ry Kyver and brought her up to speed on Shaak and what they were doing on Felucia. They then met together in a comfortable sitting room that looked out toward the palace rear gardens that were tastefully lighted. Valles, Ana, Ry, and Shaak were all introduced to each other and the discussion began. Ry led off.

"So, Master Shaak, you likely don't remember me, but I was in the Jedi at the time the War began."

"No, Countess, I do not. My apologies."

Valles chuckled at that. "Shaak, you were – as you put it – third in command of the Jedi when the War ended. Do I have that correct?"

"You do, Valles, but the way everything ended was chaotic. I barely had time to get out of there alive … but I'm here now, that's the important thing."

Shaak turned back toward Ry. "So who were you under back then?"

Ry answered. "I was in the Agri-corps so that might be why you didn't meet me."

"Oh, I see," Shaak said slowly. "So, somehow you got away clean, too."

"Not exactly," Ry laughed. "Let's just say I got another offer – one too good to turn down."

Ana chuckled. "Shaak, she was actually part of the Imperial administration for a few years."

"But now, you're a Liannese countess?" Shaak tilted her head at an angle as she asked that question.

"It's been a long road," Ry laughed again. "But I owe much of it to Valles. The Queen saw some potential in me."

Shaak nodded. "And now, she's suggesting that I might as well. Okay, so what I'm doing is an attempt to alter the axis tilt of the planet by a degree or two, and I'm needing some expertise on that."

Ry gazed into Shaak's eyes for a second and thought about it. That seems like a huge task – how does she think that's even possible? "Master Shaak, how were you thinking you might be able to do that? And better yet, why exactly?"

Shaak smiled. "I have the basic idea of how to do it, very gradually. It will require a significant amount of energy, but if the Empire can construct a weapon capable of destroying an entire planet, I would think we should be able to do this. It's about using the energy in a precise way and discovering the inner equilibrium of the planet, such that it could be altered. We are looking to change the climate of Felucia to make it less humid."

Ry stared at the Togruta master again, marveling at her seeming audacity, but then, realizing something. One thing is for sure, she has a ton of Force energy in her aura. Underestimating her would be a mistake. "Master, I would love to work with you on that, but there are other ways of bringing about the kind of change you are interested in. I am suggesting an alteration of the composition of the atmosphere."

It was Shaak's turn to think about things, and she nodded, then smiled. "That's an interesting idea, Countess. I'm intrigued by the concept. How might we do that, more or less?"

"We have the capability here on Lianna with our orbital sciences group in Santhé Corp. I learned that long ago, when they were first constructing the orbital rings, it was necessary to prep the upper atmosphere in such a way as to reduce drag forces during re-entry. Most modern starships already do that, but something on a much larger scale required a different approach."

Shaak was impressed by Ry's ideas. "Hmm, I'd like to know more. Can you perhaps provide me with some documents I could study? It seems Lianna has solved the same problems as they did on Kuat when they built their orbital manufacturing and shipbuilding capability."

Valles then added, "Truth be told, Lianna predated Kuat on that by about 1000 years. However, they went even further than we did. My grandfather later worked with the Wessex family of Kuat on perfecting our own facilities."

Ry then asked, "Shaak, if it's okay with you, I'd like to come to Felucia and see how things are there now before I could provide you with a set of recommendations."

"That would be great, Countess." She then glanced at Ana, who was conspicuously silent. "Duchess, might you have anything to add?"

Ana then smiled and looked at Ry, who was basking in the attention Shaak was giving her, knowing that Valles was also taking silent notes on it. "Yes, Master Ti, I would like to accompany Ry when she visits your world and get a look at it myself."

Ana realized the opportunity she might get in terms of Valles giving her dominion over Felucia and the possibility that the planet might be developed and thus provide another income stream for the House of Capra, not to mention a chance to beat Duchess Berit to the same. Ana knew Berit had been quietly cultivating a relationship with Shaak and wanted to do as well.

Shaak then smiled. "Of course you may, Duchess. I had heard that Countess Kyver fell under your wing of the peerage on Lianna, was that correct?"

Ana chuckled. "You don't miss much, Master Ti. As it so happens, the Countess is more of a floater as she reports directly to Her Majesty, but we have become good friends this past year or so."

Valles then spoke up, wanting to bring this session to a close. "So, it seems we have reached a solution. Shaak, are you good with these ideas?"

"I'll have to learn more about them, but yes, they sound promising. I had originally thought about the axis tilt, but that's a very delicate operation with much potential for harm. Tinkering with the atmosphere as you all have done here on Lianna seems the way to go."

Ana and Ry left together, so that Shaak and Valles might continue. The Queen then mentioned another idea to the Togruta Master.

"Shaak, as mentioned previously, I've recently had some research conducted on another planet nearby, the one called Malachor. I know, from my talks with Lord Vader that you are familiar with it."

"I am. What have you found?"

"That it is a planet that we can modify for our use. I wanted to inform you of this, because I think it will be something both of us can work on together."

Shaak realized that it might be time to take another journey to Malachor before Valles and the Santhé organization completely overhauled the place. She wanted to get a better idea of what the Liannese Queen wanted to do there.

"Valles, I'm not sure you know the full history of the place, but it goes back a long way."

"Shaak, I had considered that, but I never understood the full significance of it. Would you perhaps like to bring me up to speed?"

"Well, it is deeply ingrained in both Jedi – and Sith – history. When I was in the Order before the War, we in the High Council decided to forbid any Jedi from going there. We felt the Dark Side background of the place made it too much of a risk for less-experienced Jedi. But, may I ask, what use do you see Malachor having for Santhé Corp?"

Valles laughed softly. "Not so much the organization, but for personal reasons. I've not yet made any decisions, however. Was there a personal reason that you might have? I am aware that your acolyte Ahsoka Tano was there about two years ago and had a battle with Lord Vader."

Shaak then further realized that Valles was more aware of some events than she was, and it would be a good idea to go back to Malachor and see what condition the place was in – in particular, the old Sith Temple from where she had taken the holocrons and where Ahsoka later had the showdown with Vader.

"Yes, Valles, she has told me about some of that. It had a profound effect on her and we have spent time in meditation together over it. Valles – would you mind doing me a small favor? Allow me to return there first before your people make any changes to it."

"Oh, Shaak, yes, I would be happy to do that for you. In fact, I've been wondering for a while about something. We've talked before about the rebellion and all, and I believe we both agreed that the overthrow of Palpatine cannot be an end unto itself, so there would have to be a replacement for him."

Shaak chuckled, "yes, Valles, that is logical."

"So … Shaak, who might be the person for that and have you given any thought to that?"

"Yes, Valles, I have. I will be the person."

Shaak let this hang in the air for a few seconds as she gauged the Queen's reaction. But Valles simply smiled. She then asked, "my friend, that is an enormous undertaking. Just managing the bureaucracy alone requires experience that I am not aware that you possess, so you will need someone to plan this out for you."

Shaak gazed into Valles's eyes, and found her to be perfectly sincere. She's right, of course. I don't have administrative experience, at least not what is needed. But she does.

"And you would be the one to do that?"

"Indeed, Shaak. But we need to plan this out carefully. I share your concern about the effectiveness of Palpatine as a leader. He doesn't have the right kind of vision needed. But I would like to hear more of what your vision is, Shaak."

Shaak smiled. "It's not all that complicated. I want the kind of empire that will not so much rule, but guide, the Galaxy. I would keep the military in place and use it more to clean up various cesspools of corruption, while making it clear to all the worlds in the various regions and sectors that I plan to govern fairly."

"I see," Valles chuckled. "Well, I must say, this is a vision that I can support. And I think you will need someone in a position of importance to be someone you can trust – not only to do the job right, but someone you wouldn't have to be concerned about undermining your leadership."

Shaak then nodded. "That is what I will need, of course. But I'm glad you take the idea of me as Empress seriously. I agree that this plan will require some time to put together and then execute. So, are we truly in accord over the plan?"

"Yes, Shaak, I want to assist you in carrying it out. And, there are a couple of other leaders from whom we shall be able to draw on for their experience as well. As I've come to know you, I can see you are someone of great intelligence and foresight, but your name is not well known around the Galaxy … yet. That would be another area for us to carefully plan."

Shaak started to realize that her plan to become Empress now had a real chance of success and that Valles would be crucial to making this happen. I've got little choice now, Valles. I'm going to have to trust you. But let's put our heads together and see where this road will take us.

Valles also considered what Shaak was saying. I don't yet know how you plan to overthrow Palpatine, but I am fairly certain you will be using your Force knowledge and power in the process. Don't we both want the same things? Let's say it all works and we put you on the throne. How long are you willing to remain there? This is going to be far more difficult than you might realize, my friend.

To be continued …
