Chapter 40: It Can Wait
Lianna, Valles's Office, 0 ABY 3 months, 25 days, 16 hours
Queen Valles was wrapping up another workday – she still spent much time in her office despite becoming the sovereign, and the facilities in her office allowed her to be "plugged in" like nowhere else on Lianna – when she received the call she had been waiting for. Her sometime lover and nearly lifelong friend, Prince Vaston of Hapes, had finally arrived. The Prince's shuttle dropped him off at the landing platform for her office atop the Santhé Tower as the sun was starting to set. Valles reached out to him via the Force … To what do I owe this rare display of kindness?
He'd been missing her, certainly, but other matters had kept him away. Now that his beloved paramour was so close, he grew excited – internally, of course – and he wondered what grand gesture on his part might strike her fancy. Valles had prepared for the occasion by donning an extravagant long black dress that had various panels of satin and lace and allowed various parts of her body to be visible (or at least, slightly concealed). Her ever-present fragrance was at full volume, and as he entered the office – decked out in a dark green two-piece suit and with a dark robe over his shoulders – he glanced at her and was quite pleased.
Vaston suavely approached her, as she had emerged in front of her desk and leaned toward him, with her right hand extended. As he took it gently, she grasped his left hand firmly, then half spun in front of him such that he had to catch her in both arms. Ever ready, he calmly hoisted her off the floor and cradled her in his arms then leaned over to kiss her as the perfume hit him full in the face. The kiss lasted for about ten seconds as he tasted her sweet lip gloss. "Mmmmm," he half-sighed. "It's been far too long, my dear. Or, should I say, your Most Serene and Enticing Majesty."
Valles luxuriated in his arms while he carefully carried her over to the lounge area and then laid her down gently on one of the sectional sofas, which had been re-upholstered with black Pasminian goat leather that was as soft as fine velvet. The Prince then doffed his robe, laying it gently over the back of the sofa such that its softness almost draped over the still reclining Queen, then casually sat next to where Valles's head lay. He leaned back and smiled, while she raised herself up via her elbows and pushed her head and shoulders toward him so that she could rest them in his lap.
"Ooh," she said, in a mock high voice. "Such elegance," as she ran her hand over his green satin garments. "Are you here to honor me?" Valles laughed, which Vaston echoed.
"If that's what I have to do, my Queen …" he oozed, in a low tone.
"It is, of course," she smirked. "But, my dear Prince, you must be famished. Where would you like to go?"
"Anywhere I can admire you, Valles. It's nice to have you in small doses, else I would soon grow utterly addicted."
"Well, then." She made a show of clearing her throat, then pulled herself up to a sitting position and slid her derriere right next to his. "I know a place where we can be private, yet allow for some slight distance between us … Vaston, was there anything in particular you wanted to partake of?"
"Well …" he started to say, then stopped, as Valles was tilting her head back and grinning up at him in a girlish manner. Vaston was about 30 cm taller than her and had always adored her petite figure that seemed so perfectly shaped. He put his right arm around her shoulders and pulled her in for another kiss, and this one was most arousing as they both surged Force energy into each other. A few seconds later, he regained his composure.
"Yes, Valles. I would love to sample more Liannese tropical cuisine tonight."
"I've got just the thing. My Duchess Ana's estate grows the most exquisite varietals and you simply must try the chilled Arancio Rom – it will start things off perfectly."
"I can hardly wait, my Queen. Lead the way, your Majesty."
Valles and Vaston headed down via the lift to an elegant eatery (newly renamed The Queen's Room) on the tenth level of the Tower. She had pulled on a full robe of elegant fur, lined in a soft velvet, and taken a gleaming tiara of platinum from her dressing area (part of her office complex) that was studded with several large glittering stones, which Vaston assisted her with, so that her luxurious hair – which he loved to gently brush – could accommodate the beautiful piece.
"I must say, dear, a tiara rather becomes you so much more than a clunky crown. Far more feminine and worthy of such exotic beauty."
"You sure say all the right things …" she half-giggled.
As the two of them slowly walked into the restaurant, everyone bowed to the Queen and wished her well. Those in the know were well aware of who Prince Vaston was to her. The seemingly loving couple posed for a pair of 3D photos which were likely to be shown on Liannese holovision later that night. It was clear in Vaston's mind that Valles had carefully staged things and he didn't much care that she was using him as a prop. Soon they had been shown to their private dining room and were seated on luxurious velvet upholstered chairs with comfortable arm-rests.
"Val," he said, softly. "If I didn't know better, I would think you were using me."
"But of course you know better," she purred. "And all too well …"
"Darling, all I can say … is … if it feels this good getting used … then just keep on, until you use me up."
"Where have I heard that before?" She laughed, happily.
"I should hope you haven't … but for someone like you, I would expect it to be quite frequent."
"Well, Vas … you know I'm too busy running the universe …"
"Much too busy for … non-business, non-political endeavors?"
"Quite."
She giggled again, clearly enjoying the give and take. The truth was, if she was forced to admit it, Valles wanted romance and physical contact as much as anyone, albeit in small doses. Vaston was, at present, the only person she either trusted or was attracted to, that could fill this role in her life. She told herself it didn't matter, and there were other things to do during every day, but the truth was that power and wealth were the only things she normally found rewarding and it had been this way as long as she could remember, starting in her childhood. Even that period was not typical of most as she was clearly gifted in learning ability – both with her studies and with her interpersonal relationships – and she plowed ahead, clearly to the delight of her grandfather.
Kerred Santhé wanted what most every father usually does – to have his offspring follow in his footsteps – except that for him that was not possible and so he decided that the dream would have to skip a generation. To make this happen, it was (in his mind) necessary to have an arranged marriage between two of his children – only these two had different mothers. The laws of Lianna didn't restrict such unions, and even if they had, powerful individuals like Kerred would find a way to make it happen. But the cost was surely steep, as his daughter Mirella was more or less forced to carry the child of her philandering half-brother and she always resented that. But Mirella was an active mother for most of her daughter's childhood, reasoning that it wasn't young Valles's fault and the child was a victim of circumstance. Grandpa Kerred watched her progress with great interest and couldn't be more pleased when she became interested in business and wanted to join the Company.
He was delighted when he discovered young Valles – at perhaps just three years of age – levitating objects in her playroom. Kerred knew the Jedi Order would take an interest in Valles, and surely want to conscript the girl into their "cult" (as he termed it). So he instructed her to never play such games around other adults and to always come to him when she had any questions. By the time she was seven years old, Kerred started formally instructing her in the Force and informing her that she was a very special child to have such ability and that she must develop it as far as she could. Quite on her own, Valles discovered that she could "persuade" people by using it and she decided to keep this aspect from her grandfather, though she figured he knew about it himself and it may have been a source of his power in business, especially when it came to negotiation.
It was then that she also decided (around her tenth birthday) she would work on her physical form and make herself the most beautiful girl around. She studied every aspect of beauty and how to develop it, along with a pleasing personality and movements – qualities that most women didn't truly develop until adulthood, but Valles was forced to grow up fast, if for no other reason than to please her grandfather. Their relationship was truly symbiotic, because she was the heir that he longed for and he also knew her talents would drive the Company well beyond any vision he'd had for it. Kerred lived out his days, pridefully watching her build her power and wealth step by step, and saw her as his greatest work and most prized possession – though he knew no one could truly possess such a force of nature.
After a relaxing meal, the Queen and Prince rode back up to the 189th level of the Tower, and as the lift doors slid open, the buzz began at the Tower Club. This was Valles's first appearance there since proclaiming herself Queen and she didn't disappoint. Vaston remained silent for the most part, preferring to bask in the glow of his hostess. As they approached the bandstand, Valles was offered a chance to speak to the assembled audience. Unknown to Vaston, she'd been planning this appearance for a few weeks, ever since Vaston's mother, Queen Vestalia, had convinced him to go to Lianna and honor his longtime friend. It wasn't long before he realized what she was up to, but if any of it bothered him, he gave little indication. Vaston helped Valles up to the microphone and she gracefully slid into place, her dress and robe perfect as always, along with her hair and makeup.
"Good evening … my fellow Liannese … friends … and guests. I stand before you tonight with enthusiasm and my heart
full of gratitude. I had always said that I would not seek the throne of our wonderful world without the full support and approval of my people … I have never wanted to see you as my subjects, loyal as you may be, but as partners in this endeavor. Lianna is my home, and it's where my heart is. We are so very fortunate to live in a world that is at peace, and where everyone can share in our prosperity, a blessing that is made possible by our long history of looking after our resources and our environment. In many ways, we are the envy of the Galaxy and why not? We've worked diligently over the centuries to reach this moment tonight, and, as your Queen, I take great pride in what we have all accomplished. Considering our long history, my part in things is small … But yours – as the citizens and residents of Lianna – is great. So let us raise our voices together to pay a tribute to what we are … what we have been … and what we shall be."
As she finished her short address, the gathering applauded politely, and Valles knew the time would come for her to make a more public appearance at a stadium in the City, where there were many to choose from, as various sports teams had their own locations. But that would have to wait. Her coronation was still about one year away, and she next had planned to address the Legislature.
Prime Minister Dragoo was in attendance. As the Queen was about to step down from the bandstand into Vaston's waiting arms, the PM spoke up. Raising his glass of Vaynai blue champagne, he bellowed, "a toast to Her Majesty, Queen Valles of Lianna, long may she reign!"
"Hear!" resounded through the room, as glasses clinked and camera flashes from attendees' com devices could be seen here and there.
Valles smiled wide, then nodded her head forward. "Thank you, everyone. Now it's getting past my bedtime …" she smirked, as the audience roared with laughter. She headed toward the front of the club and the exit, with Vaston walking a step behind her. Before they boarded the lift, he raised his voice.
"As the representative of Her Majesty, Queen Vestalia of Hapes, my home world and sector gladly and enthusiastically salutes Her Supreme Majesty, Queen Valles. We wish her the best of health and a long and glorious reign."
He bowed low before her, as the select audience politely applauded, then followed her onto the lift after the portal opened. Soon they were on their way back up to level 215. As they exited the lift and walked into Valles's office, she grabbed him and pulled him into a passionate kiss.
"Darling! The way you handled everything and stood by me tonight was so … perfect," Valles gushed.
"My pleasure. It was great seeing you in your element, and you're the one potentate I've seen that knows when to stop talking. That speech was perfect, just the right note of humility and paying tribute to the people … you know, the ones that all said they wanted a queen, just so long as it was you."
Valles tossed her head back and laughed long and hearty. "I love you," she simply said.
Lianna, Santhia Palace, 0 ABY 3 months, 26 days, 7 hours
The next morning, at Santhia, Valles and Vaston awoke together after a wonderful night of love making and happiness. He was thrilled to be with her again and to savor all of her many charms and she was moved to flights of ecstasy, such that she slept like a baby and only awoke to her lover's gentle kiss.
"My lovely Valles … Queen of all women … so what is next on the agenda?"
She rose to a sitting position and glanced around the room, realizing that the sun had caught her still in bed – an unusual circumstance for her, but since she was Queen now, it was something she could finally afford. She gave a blissful yawn, and then leapt atop him, playfully driving Vaston back onto the mattress. They wrestled for a few minutes, but then she arose and he followed, each helping the other into their robes, whereupon it was time to head out to her private terrace and ring for some breakfast.
Once they had been served and were enjoying the various treats and beverages, Valles took a swig of her caf and smiled at him.
"Well, Vas … I guess we'd best get down to business, after all …"
"Yes, Val. My mother will likely want a full report, should you be ready to give one." He sipped some melon juice, then added, "no rush, of course, you know her …"
"I do, and I must say, I always enjoy our times together. Probably the most comfortable seat I've yet been in ... Her Majesty's lap."
"Oh, you make her day when you sit there, I'm almost jealous."
"Ha-ha … of her ... or me?" She half-laughed.
"So …" Valles took a deep breath, then exhaled. "Here's where we are. Palpatine is growing more and more insecure. Something is eating at him and it's not just the loss of the Death Star."
"Any ideas on that?" His expression turned serious for a second, then he smirked.
"Not yet," she chuckled, "but somehow, I think our friend on Felucia may have something to do with it. Though I'm not exactly sure what."
"Shaak Ti? The onetime Jedi Master … I know you've become fond of her. Mother mentioned her to me before I left. Said that you wanted her to be able to … carry on with whatever she's doing."
"Yes, that is accurate. And she has confided in me, but I am not at liberty to divulge the full extent of her plans."
Vaston nodded. "I see. A need-to-know basis. Mother will understand, I suppose."
"Vas … you'd do well to take Shaak seriously. The lady has levels of power I can only guess at."
"And she has no qualms about revealing this? Do tell …"
She simply stared at him, laughing softly, then tossing her hair as her robe opened slightly. He leaned over to kiss her, which she accepted – a short smooch, lip to lip. Seeing that Valles was not going to give much away concerning Felucia – and he knew there was much to tell – he decided to try another tack.
"Dear Valles, how goes it with Lord Vader?"
She laughed again, then decided to relax a little on this. "Oh, Anakin is just fine. He's now in Shaak's service. Seems he has been introduced to his long-lost children."
"And whom, pray tell, might those be?"
Valles snickered and gave her sly smile, clearly enjoying herself.
"One is Leia, Princess of Alderaan …"
"Which, of course, is no more, and the other?"
"A farm boy from Tatooine, named Luke."
"And Shaak has told you all of this?"
"No … it was Queen Breha."
Vaston had to think about that for a second. "Breha? Didn't she die on Alderaan?"
Valles smiled, then put a finger to her lips. "That's the cover story, and let's leave it at that, shall we?"
Vaston knew that was all she was willing to say at this point, and perhaps his mother might know more, but anyway, such news of the Skywalker children mattered little to him beyond being a gossip item. Years ago, Vestalia had told her son who Darth Vader really was, and why he was so dangerous, thus Vaston had a healthy respect for the Dark Lord.
He tried a different approach. "Love, I get the distinct feeling you are backing the rebellion but Palpatine doesn't know that …"
"That's not all, but as far as he knows at present, I'm his lifeline. We're going to build him a new Death Star and we'll get it done in two years – not twenty. In the meantime, he's ordering more SSDs from our friends on Kuat."
Vaston laughed at the thought of this. It seemed like overkill and was further proof that the old man was rattled.
"Why is any of this even necessary … Valles, I'm sure you have some insight."
"Yes, your mother and I can compare notes, I suppose. But he's told me something most remarkable … so remarkable, I found it odd."
Vaston focused on this revelation for a second. "Seriously?"
"Yes, he let me know that he felt he was getting on in years … and … that I could maybe be his "replacement."
At that, the prince was more than a little taken aback. He fumbled for words, then was able to sputter out some.
"V-V-Valles … my dear … I … I … I don't know what to say."
She laughed, but a little uncomfortably.
"You don't have to say anything. I hardly believe he was serious. Still …" She broke into a grin and left the moment hanging, then picked it up.
"Could you see me as the Empress of the … whole galaxy?"
"I don't know, Valles. Do you want it? Be honest …"
"Well, I could see myself in the role. But I'm not in any hurry. I haven't even been formally crowned as Queen of Lianna. Being Empress would take me away from all that I love about this place."
"That's great, dear, but the question remains, how much do you want it?"
"I want it, sure. But I can wait."
After that, he realized there was nothing more to be said – or that needed saying. Valles had a plan, for sure, one that likely included Shaak Ti in some capacity. Perhaps my mother knows more about her.
The two of them finished their meal, then stood together looking out to the palace gardens, which featured many interesting trees and a hedge maze in the distance, followed by a small pond. Vaston sighed as he admired the fine work her landscapers had done.
"Someday, love, I want to search for you in that maze …"
"Aww," she smirked. "But it could be possible – when I have more time."
"Well, Val, I've got to be going soon, there's a conference with some officials back on Hapes. Let's get together again tonight and have another wonderful encounter."
"I would love that, my prince. More than you know."
Lianna, Duchess Ana's palace, 0 ABY 4 months, 5 days
It was warm tropical day in Livornia, and Duchess Ana Capra and Countess Ry Kyver – having now become close friends – were relaxing in the warmth of Kyall (the Lianna sun) and its intense rays. They had been sunbathing for about a half hour, and both of them were growing hungry. Ana picked up her com and gave it a few taps, and soon, a servant brought a large tray filled with delicious chilled fruit and juices, accompanied by a selection of small seeded rolls. A small cup of local honey was there and Ry's mouth watered as she saw the spread.
"My dear Ana, as usual, you have the most impeccable taste …" Ry exclaimed, while picking up a slice of mango and sinking her teeth into it.
Ana laughed. "But, of course …" Her voice became a soft purr, as she smiled at Ry. "Try the honey, dear. It's a sweet treat."
Ry spread a little on one of the delicious rolls, that she soon realized were filled with a soft bean paste, which the honey complemented quite well. As she tasted it, she smiled at Ana, whom she had taken more than a liking to. "Mmm, you're right. But not nearly as sweet … as you." With that, Ry came over to the duchess and stood behind her, fingering Ana's soft black hair and caressing it. Ana turned around and the two kissed gently.
Both ladies were in swimwear and their brownish bodies glistened with a slight layer of sweat in the warm sunshine. Originally having met at Valles's suburban palace, Ry eventually was assigned to work with Ana on various projects the Queen wanted. Ana was about eight years older than the countess, but they had a great rapport. The duchess respected Ry's scientific acumen, and Ry was impressed with all of the various things that were grown on Ana's vast estate, which extended for thousands of hectares. Several hundred workers labored on the estate, managing the droids that planted and harvested the various fruits, grains, and vegetables that grew there. Part of its border was a large lake with pristine waters that reflected the turquoise sky above. Due to the Water Board's control of precipitation, ample rainfall came when needed so the crops thrived. Due to Ana's belief in rotation, the soils would replenish themselves naturally, thus removing the need for nitrogen fertilizer – which was in normal use around Lianna – that came from the recycling of human and animal wastes via the intricate water management system maintained by the Board.
"I'm just so in love with this place," Ry gushed. "And with you, my dear."
Ana, who was several centimetres shorter than Ry, smiled, then laughed. "You're too kind. But I love it."
The two of them consumed a bit more of the honey, then kissed again, each running their tongues on the other's lips, savoring the flavor. Before they had met, neither of them was looking for love. Ana was a widow, her onetime husband having passed some twelve years earlier, leaving her to her ambitions and a desire for a role in the emerging Liannese power scene. She was one of Valles's early supporters and that shrewd move had paid off and made her quite wealthy. Ry had had a checkered past when she first came to Lianna, but also owed her success to her relationship with Valles, a woman whom she'd come to greatly admire – even love, at times – but one who carefully kept her at arm's length, as Valles did with almost everyone. But the Queen had given Ry a title, and lands to go with it, thus ensuring her a role in polite Liannese society – a rare feat for an outsider not born on the planet.
Ana, however, though of noble birth, was far more accessible, and had a down-to-the-ground sensibility and demeanor. As a child, she'd come to know the workers who ran her father's (the Duke of Livornia) estate, and her father insisted that she show them kindness and respect, as that was how people were supposed to be treated. When the estate passed to her, Ana continued these ways and thus was quite popular among her various "team members" (as she referred to them), who were staunchly loyal to her. Ry grew quite fond of Ana as she came to know her and before either of them knew it, they had fallen in love. Where it might lead, neither wanted to speculate, so why not live in the moment? And, as both were Force-sensitive, they could understand each other in a way most others never could.
After a few more romantic interludes, which included some time in the pool, fooling around with a bit of splashing followed by some tender hugs, the two donned soft robes and went inside. Ana signaled to another servant and led Ry into a small room with a full window overlooking the pool area. They took seats in a pair of sumptuous dark leather chairs and smiled at each other. Ana waved her hand and the holo screen rose from a compartment in a small table that was in front of them. Picking up a control device, Ana started a short presentation on the status of the replacement Death Star – now code-named "Peacekeeper" per the Queen's wishes. The presentation showed that the project was still in the materials acquisition phase, as the basic design was mostly complete (due to it being based on the previous model).
Once she had reviewed it, Ry looked at Ana, asking, "have they decided on a site to construct it yet?"
"There are a few candidates. Palpatine prefers a location somewhat off the major space lanes. Scarif won't work as I understand that Tarkin rashly destroyed much of the facilities we had in place there."
Ry laughed. "He was an idiot, really. Mostly acting from a gross over-estimation of himself. Was that your impression as well? I know he seemed to be sweet on you."
Ana laughed in return. "I did nothing to dissuade him on that score. I figured he'd spill more useful information, which I could provide Valles – just to ensure the reports she was getting matched up."
Ry nodded. "Yeah. Good move. Always keep the Queen happy … but I can't complain about her – I owe almost everything I have to her."
"Still," Ana added, with a slight nod of her own, "Valles usually only does something if it's ultimately good for Valles."
"So … are you sensing any opportunities here? I mean, ones that our friend Qi'ra might be able to help with?"
"Perhaps," the Duchess gave a sly smile. "I do appreciate how she's willing to do the legwork and keep us from being exposed. Might there be a reason to expand her incentive package?"
"Ha-ha …" Ry responded. "Yeah, I think we're on the same page there. Let her know that if she were to act in an independent capacity …"
"Away from Black Sun … but does she harbor a desire to move up in that organization? Ry … what is your reading of them?"
"Very tough to get far there. Those people keep things on a need-to-know basis, and I doubt they trust her all that much. If we just hand her a juicy offer, it could raise Crimson Dawn's profile in that world. Lots to consider, here."
Ana sighed contentedly, and sat back in her chair. "Set up a meeting with her in the City. I know the new project will give us many ops … but I also know that Berit is likely drawing the same conclusion."
"Yeah," Ry nodded, with a grin. "And there is, of course, Shaak Ti to consider. The Queen has made her a high priority, practically giving her the run of Lianna. I wish I knew what was really going on, there."
"We'll just have to keep all of these factors separate. Shaak … Qi'ra … Berit. Speaking of Berit, I know she's working overtime to keep Shaak happy, as well. We can't let ourselves be outflanked, here."
"Well, I might be a little confused, Ana. What does Shaak really want from us?"
"Valles told me of her order for ships and strike craft. Perhaps for the defense of Felucia, but if the Imperials wanted to take that from her, they could."
"Not with Valles assuming dominion over it," Ry pointed out. "From everything I've been able to discern, Palpatine has more or less allowed her to do as she pleases. Must be nice …" Ry sighed, with a smile.
"No doubt, but her relationship with Coruscant is not something she likes to talk about … I've never gotten much out of her regarding that."
"Do you suppose …" Ry stroked her chin for a second.
"Suppose what?"
"That she's got a separate deal worked out with him? I mean, he's already given her the contract to build the new battle station. Might there be more?"
"Ha!" Ana scoffed. "Your guess is as good as mine. But I know one thing. That Shaak Ti is as hard to read as anyone, and she's got much bigger plans than just a few ships. If she is the leader of the rebellion, it means she wants to overthrow the Empire, but that won't happen easily. The rebels just don't have the firepower or the manpower or the money power. There has to be a different strategy at work here."
Ana then rose from her chair, and reached over to Ry. "Come, dear, I'd like to get in a nap … after a massage."
"Surely …" Ry said softly, while looking at her lovingly.
The two shared a lingering kiss, as their robes opened and their swimsuits rubbed against each other, then walked off together, arm in arm.
Coruscant, Imperial Palace, 0 ABY 4 months, 15 days
Valles was on her way to Coruscant in her (now) royal yacht Belladonna, having received another summons from Emperor Palpatine. She knew he was troubled – although she didn't know much beyond the dismay he felt over losing the Death Star. As she arrived at the palace, she was treated as a visiting monarch should be received, and as the Emperor wanted. Things weren't going well for him in the months since the loss of the Death Star, and this was especially true when it came to his relationship with Vader. Sheev Palpatine very much wanted to find out what Valles knew in this regard – and how things were going on the construction of a replacement battle station.
The Emperor had told himself that only Valles's word could be trusted, as she was (in his mind) a loyal follower of the Dark Side of the Force and he saw her as his most worthy successor – especially now, as it seemed that Darth Vader had become unreliable. The Dark Lord still had yet to bring Ahsoka Tano to Coruscant and Palpatine had convinced himself that she was the one helping the rebels to victory after victory, but now his belief in Valles had caused him to see things in a new light. Palpatine had the feeling that Valles was more than a match for Ahsoka – but, of course, he knew nothing about Shaak and her role in things.
Soon the Queen and the Emperor were alone together and standing next to a large transparisteel window that overlooked much of the area of the cityscape near the palace. Valles was resplendent in her shimmering golden dress and matching robe with a full one-metre train behind her. Her hair was perfectly set and flowed down her back, topped off with a strong dose of fragrance that could alter the perception of those less-gifted in the Force than Palpatine. He had gently taken her right hand and led her over to the observation area – this area did not contain any of Shaak's listening devices so she would not learn what was discussed, though this of course was not known to either participant. He was also looking his best – knowing full well that she would prefer to see that. After a few seconds, she led off.
"Sheev … I think I know why you asked me here today. And I want to bring good news to you. We have already finalized the design of the new battle station and we have given it a name … the Peacekeeper."
The Emperor chuckled, looking lovingly at the ravishing and powerful young queen. "Ah, very good. I like your choice of words, my dear Valles."
She smirked. "The people will be easier to manage if we show them our good intentions. It simply will be unnecessary for rebellious groups to thrive, once we have the means of quickly quelling any uprising. Then we can civilize the Galaxy under a new and enlightened reign."
"And that's what I see in you, beautiful lady. The kind of ruler that everyone can be inspired by. So, dear Valles, are you interested in taking the throne in the future?"
"Oh, I'm not in any particular hurry. I think I could, however, be the one to organize His Majesty's government into something that extends the Imperial reach in a more effective manner."
She then glanced at him, tilting her head at an angle as the light caught the jewels on her tiara. "But, dear Sheev, are you feeling well these days?"
"I must confess, dear lady, that I am not. I've needed to take a step back from these duties, and there are many pressing matters to attend to."
Valles nodded gently, while frowning slightly. "I think you should take the time you need, Sire. You'll have good days and bad days. Perhaps a trip away from Coruscant might do wonders for you. I've many worlds in my dominion that might be perfect."
Palpatine smiled at her lovingly, gently putting a hand on her right shoulder. The apparent loss of Vader had been weighing heavily on him, but now he seemed more at ease – due to her. He ventured a question.
"Valles, are you aware of someone called Ahsoka Tano?"
Her expression changed to a wry smile. "Why, yes. And a fine young warrior she is."
"Well, she seems to be the one leading the rebels now. Should I be worried?"
Valles continued smiling, while tossing her head back a little, so as to unleash more perfume.
"Sire, I have this matter well in hand. The rebels will not be an issue, and nothing they do is unknown to me."
He cackled softly. "I'm pleased to hear that. I'm sure they will never suspect you, either."
Valles met this with a chuckle. "Sheev, I'd like to sit for a bit. Might we find a cozier spot?"
"Of course, my dear," he replied, and they walked back together to a small sitting room, away from the main throne area of the palace. After some more pleasantries, he then asked her something he'd clearly been thinking about.
"Valles … I was sorry to learn of the death of your grandfather a few years ago. You might not realize this, but he was a good friend to my onetime master – Darth Plagueis – and to me as well."
"Oh, yes, Sire, I have come to know some of that. When grandpa passed on, he left me the Santhé Family holocron. I've learned much about him, by his name on Muunilinst – Hego Damask."
"Yes … and your grandfather was wise to pledge Lianna's loyalty to the Empire when the time came."
"I was young then, but he was doing the right thing for our world and we switched our production lines to support the Imperial Navy after that. He gave me the chance to run a division of the company during the War. We then developed the TIE-Advanced line of ships."
"He must have been so proud of you … but now you have far surpassed anything he could have dreamed of."
Valles chuckled. "We never talked about me becoming Queen, but, when I looked through his writings, it was clear that he thought I might one day be ready for it."
"And then, Empress … of the Galaxy." He looked at her fondly, wishing he'd known a woman like her when he was younger. She smirked for a second, then noted. "Yes, his last words to me were 'someday the Galaxy will be yours.'"
"Are you sure that will be enough for you?"
She laughed heartily. "We'll just have to see, won't we? But there are many other galaxies beyond this one …"
As she thought about it, Valles realized her desires truly had no boundaries. She added, "and we should develop the ability to explore and colonize these as well. Sheev, have you ever given any thought to that?"
He shook his head, and a crafty smile crossed his face. "I must confess … that goes beyond anything I've yet envisioned … but, Valles, do you suppose the Force will work in those places as well?"
"A good question, Sire. I'd like to find out someday …"
The two of them continued to chat about various visions and dreams they'd had, about his great respect for her grandfather and his knowledge of the circumstances of her birth on Lianna.
"So you see, Valles, I'm quite pleased that you have become all that Kerred had hoped you would be. The Force is stronger in you than in anyone else I have known – even Lord Vader. Together we shall rule for decades into the future … but you will need an heir, someone to come up behind you."
"Sire, I've scarcely thought about that."
"No matter. Your grandfather had also made plans for that as well. I will tell you of these at another time."
"Ah …" Valles nodded with a smile. "I would like that."
As their discussion wound down, Palpatine served an exquisite dinner for the Queen of Lianna, one that carefully addressed all of her favorite delicacies. When it was concluded, he led her to her royal transport, which had been waiting for her on a lower level of the palace. Before she boarded it, he kissed her gently on the cheek and wished her well as she left.
Once back aboard the Belladonna, Valles's newly appointed hand-maidens helped her out of her golden dress and robe and then washed and bathed her in her private suite. She then changed into a light robe and went off to get some sleep. Before she turned in, she noticed a message on her private com device.
"Might you be able to swing by Felucia when you have a chance? We have some things to discuss."
The message was from Shaak Ti. Oh yes, my dear Shaak, we do indeed.
Felucia, Shaak's residence, 0 ABY 4 months, 18 days
Shaak had called on Valles, asking her to come to Felucia, which she was able to do on her return to the Outer Rim from Coruscant. After getting some rest, and then partaking in a light meal, the Liannese queen was ready to meet with her Togruta ally. Belladonna dropped from hyperspace a few hours after leaving the Capital – where Valles had been busy adding to her list of contacts in the Imperial administration and being shown around the planet, where some of the "movers and shakers" were all too happy to fete the newly crowned Queen of Lianna. Valles knew that she would need to get the full measure of Imperial government were she to someday become Empress, and this was as good of an opportunity as any. Even though Palpatine had been more than willing to entertain the idea of her as his someday successor, Valles wasn't taking anything for granted. And now that she knew that Shaak was aiming to become Empress herself, her plans now included taking the helm of the government once the accession had taken place. But no one – apart from Shaak and herself – needed to be aware of the plan. Still, inwardly, Valles wondered just how Shaak planned to dispose of Palpatine.
As Valles boarded her small shuttle – one that did not stand out and carried no signs of its royal owner, as her more formal shuttle did – she piloted it herself down to the surface, after sending word that she was coming. She was attired in a soft white sleeveless silk dress with light sandals, as she expected the climate to be its usual stifling level of humidity. Valles also sported a golden tiara with just a few reddish gemstones on it. Once on the ground, she was met by Maris Brood, and the two had a short conversation.
"Good afternoon, Miss Brood. Nice to see you again."
Maris scoffed internally for a second, then smiled. "Good afternoon to you as well, your Majesty, and welcome, again, to Felucia."
Maris had always been wary of Valles. There was something about the woman that didn't quite add up, in her mind, but she knew Shaak was fond of her – or at least had plans that included the Liannese – so she played the role she was expected to play. Valles could detect the Zabrak's Force ability and was inwardly impressed, while understanding that Maris was every bit as important to Shaak as Ahsoka was.
"I'm pleased to be here. How is Master Shaak today?" Valles knew she was simply making small talk, and Maris knew this as well.
"She's well. We're carrying on just fine, your Majesty. I assume she's expecting you?"
"Indeed … yes, Miss Brood." She has a rather rough exterior but I imagine she's smarter than she looks. Shaak clearly trusts her.
"Shall I get you a speeder, Queen Valles?"
"That would be wonderful."
Maris pulled out her com, and soon enough, Shaak's exquisite personal model arrived. Valles hopped in and the vehicle quickly ferried her over to Shaak's newly upgraded residence. Detecting her arrival, Shaak came out to greet the monarch and invited her inside. The Master was also dressed lightly in green silk and walked barefoot as she usually did when it was warm.
"Ah, Valles, good to see you again, and how lovely you look. I hope your reign as Queen is proceeding as you wish."
Valles chuckled, as the two of them dealt with each other as equals. There were no curtsies and hand kissing. Instead, they grasped hands together in a warm greeting, even as Valles still carefully covered her Force ability from Shaak. The Master invited Valles to sit and then asked:
"Might I get you a beverage, your Majesty?"
"That would be great. You know, I thought this might be a good time to come to your place on Felucia – at least on this part of the planet. Have Ana and Ry gotten in touch with you regarding the analysis you wanted?"
"Not yet, Valles, but this would be a good time. Events are moving fast here now. Anakin has taken up part-time residence here and we are moving forward with our plans. The members of my Order have been informed of our arrangement with Santhé Corp and how we will be taking the next steps with the Rebellion."
Valles took a large swallow of the drink and savored its smooth and refreshing flavor. "I'm glad to hear that, Shaak. When are you planning on letting the others know of your larger plans?"
"Not just yet …" the Togruta said softly, as she looked Valles in the eye. "The strategy has many layers."
"Oh, of course it does," Valles chuckled. "But if we are to support you, I need to be kept in the loop, as it were."
"Not to worry, dear," Shaak laughed. "I have every intention of doing that."
"So, Shaak … have you had the opportunity to return to Malachor and make your assessment?"
"Not as of yet, but it's high on the priority list."
"Well, I should inform you that Ana and Ry have done a thorough analysis of the planet and they think it's an excellent candidate for being terraformed, so to speak."
"Is that right …" Shaak muttered softly. "Is that your plan, then?"
"Perhaps, but I got to thinking. Shaak, if you truly intend to accede to the Galactic throne, I think you will need an alternate palace – one that is far from Coruscant – where you might peacefully consider all of your governing imperatives."
Shaak stared at her for a second. Valles, you are likely correct, and I see you've thought about all of these things even more than I have. "Yes, I guess it could be. That is, once we've done the renovation."
"I'm glad you see it that way. Malachor now belongs to me anyway, and I would be most happy to present it to you as a gift from Lianna … for your own personal use. I want your reign as Empress to be most successful, and I foresee a day when you shall be a much-loved individual."
Shaak beamed as she considered the implications of this. "Well, I don't want to get too far ahead of myself."
"Of course not. Now, since you asked me here, what was it that you wanted to go over?"
"Yes. Valles, I wanted to know something regarding the reconstruction of the Death Star. I had guessed that your firm might be involved. Am I correct?"
"You are. However, we shall have some partners in this effort, one of them being Lira Wessex of Kuat and the KDY firm she now heads up."
"Oh, is that correct? We knew Lira back in the Jedi days. They were building much of the Republic's capital ship inventory, and I of course know they are doing the same for the Emperor. So do you have a timeline for completion of the new battle station?"
Valles nodded. "I have informed Palpatine that we are shooting for a two-year turnaround on the Peacekeeper. The acquisition of the needed materials we are working on now."
"Where will it be built?"
"That has not yet been decided."
"I see. Well, I guess we don't have to concern ourselves with that … yet."
"I don't think so, Shaak. But now that you have me here, I suppose I should inform you of another development."
"Which is?"
"The onetime Queen of Alderaan, Breha Antilles Organa, is staying with me on Lianna."
Shaak's head looked up and her eyes widened. "Really? That is quite interesting, we'd all assumed she perished in the destruction of her home-world."
"Uh, yes, and at the moment, she would prefer that be the understanding. But she had asked about Leia, and I knew she was a part of the rebellion so I naturally figured you would know where she is."
"I do – she is staying with us here. She is considering joining the Order, as her brother has."
"Oh, that's wonderful, Shaak. I'm sure Breha will be pleased with that. I'm going to inform her."
"Well, Valles, do you suppose she would like to visit Leia here … or perhaps, have her daughter go to Lianna?"
"I can ask her. But the last thing I would want to do is come between the two of them."
As she spoke this, Valles rose from her chair and Shaak soon joined her. The two embraced quickly and walked out of the house together. Shaak waved her hand and the speeder returned. She helped Valles aboard, then took the seat next to the Queen. Another wave and the vehicle whisked them over to where Valles's shuttle awaited. As the Queen got in, she quickly fired up the ship and was headed toward the Belladonna. Once she had docked with her yacht, Valles went to her private suite to change clothes and prepare for her arrival back on Lianna. She had some time to think while doing this.
So you are putting things in place, are you, dear Shaak? I hope you don't get too far ahead of yourself, but you seem like a cautious individual. This quality will serve you well once you assume the Imperial throne, and I get the distinct feeling that you now know exactly how you are going to do that. I'm looking forward to the performance.
After she returned to her home, Shaak summoned both Maris and Ahsoka, who soon arrived and the three were seated.
"Ladies, I've just finished a meeting with Valles. Ahsoka, I want you to take a trip over to Lianna soon, so you may come to know the place even better. It's a planet we are going to see much of in the months to come."
Maris and Ahsoka sat quietly, waiting for Shaak's next item.
"Now that both of you have met Valles, you should be able to see that she and her firm will be our partners as we push the rebellion to its next phase. The ships we are taking delivery of will provide support for that and we will start to construct another new base on the Outer Rim."
Maris seemed a little dubious, which Shaak picked up on.
"Something to say, my child?"
The Zabrak started to shake her head, then looked at the Master.
"I don't know, Master. There's something about her, I can't name it, but I can feel it. But you seem to trust her. Why is that? … If you don't mind my asking…"
"Not at all. Maris … and Ahsoka, too, I'm not under any misconceptions regarding Valles. She's powerful, and though I cannot openly detect it, I imagine with the Force as well. Anakin might be able to tell us more, but I'd rather that she does that herself when the time comes. For the time being, her interests would seem to align with ours. Palpatine stands in the way of what she likely wants – Galactic power."
"But Mother," Ahsoka started, then stopped for an instant. "You're telling us that you want to be Empress and replace Palpatine. Is Valles on board with that?"
"She is," Shaak answered. "But we've only discussed it in hypothetical terms. As you both understand, to take out Palpatine, we'll need to execute each step of the plan carefully – with no mistakes. We likely won't get another shot, so this one's got to count."
"So Valles gains if we do?" Maris then asked.
"So it would seem," Ahsoka answered, while Shaak stayed silent for a second. Ahsoka then looked to her adoptive mother and waited for her response.
"Valles pointed out something to me recently," Shaak started. "Which is, that the Imperial regime is massive. There is a large bureaucracy on Coruscant, and it's going to require serious administrative skills. And that's something she possesses in great capacity, and, admittedly, I do not. She's been running at least part of the Santhé Corp since she was 16 years old – and I have to respect that, because now she's Queen of her planet, and yet still runs the overall firm. I seriously wonder when she has time to sleep."
Ahsoka nodded, mulling it over. "So she would have time to get her arms around the Empire as well?"
"That seems to be what she is saying."
Shaak chuckled softly, then glanced at both of her adopted daughters. She motioned for them both to come close, then threw her arms around them as she drew them into a short hug.
"Maris … Ahsoka … truly no one matters more to me than the two of you. And, whatever happens, I will need you both … more than ever. You ask me, do I trust Valles. Let's just say that we each have to trust each other, if we're going to get what we want."
With that, Shaak released them both, and wished them well, as Frehya had returned. Maris extended her right hand outwards and smiled at Ahsoka, who returned it, then led them both out of Shaak's home. At this point, there really was nothing more to be said.
To be continued …
