"Are you coming with us, gramma?" Levi questioned, swinging Mary's hand in his through the parking structure of the airport.
Stopping in her tracks, Mary knelt in front of the six-year-old, adjusted the backpack strap on his shoulder, and shook her head. "I'm sorry, baby, but I have to stay here. Remember, we talked about how you're going to go with Sheldon and Amy and I'm going to come to see all of you in a few weeks." Mary glanced at Sheldon pushing a full luggage cart and Amy steering the stroller with Theo while pulling a suitcase behind her and turned her attention back to her grandson in front of her. "Can you make me a promise that you'll be good for Uncle Sheldon and Aunt Amy? Help them with Theo and listen to what they say?"
"Yeah," he nodded in agreement. "Are you really going to come see us?"
"I promise. I'll give you a little time to get settled, start your new school, maybe make a new friend or two, but I'll be there."
Levi held his pinky finger up in front of him, "Do you pinky promise?" Mary chuckled, interlocking her pinky with her grandson's.
Accompanying the group through the line to check their luggage, Mary stayed close until they approached the security checkpoint. Hugging each person, she whispered into Amy's ear as they embraced, "Call me if you need anything. I can be on a plane in hours. Thank you so much for welcoming the boys into your home. I know the past few weeks have been hard, but you jumped right in and have been amazing." Amy silently nodded, thanking her mother-in-law for the sentiments.
Mary lingered longer while hugging Sheldon, "I know this isn't going to be easy for you, but I am so proud of everything you've done. I'm not just talking about the past few weeks or winning the Nobel, I'm talking about your entire life. Don't forget to take a few minutes for yourself when you need to. Amy will understand."
"Goodbye, mom. We should get going. I'll call you when we get home. Let me know if there's anything I can do from California to help you and Georgie with cleaning out Missy's apartment."
"Just take good care of those boys."
The group made it through security, but not after Sheldon got pulled for additional screening due to forgetting to remove his phone from his pocket and the diaper bag needing an extra inspection of the snacks and juice cups. Finally recombobulated and making their way to the gate, Sheldon shook his head to himself, which did not go unnoticed by Amy, "What?" was all she asked.
"We came here for Christmas a month ago and we're leaving with a stroller and two kids. We've become those people in the airport that I can't stand," he commented before pointing, "There's our gate."
Before Sheldon and Amy had a chance to sit, Levi began reaching for the bag clipped to the handle of the stroller. "I'm hungry. Can I have a snack?"
"Why don't we go to the bathroom first? You won't want to use the bathroom on the plane," Sheldon held his hand out toward the boy.
Amy lifted Theo from the stroller, finding a snack for him in the same bag his brother had been reaching for only minutes earlier. An older woman sitting across from Amy offered a smile, which Amy returned before turning her attention back to the one-year-old in her lap. "First time flying with kids? Where are you headed?"
"First time everything with the kids. We've only been doing this for about a month. They're my husband's sister's kids. We're taking them back to California for a while."
"You're doing a wonderful job. I remember when my kids were that age. You've definitely got your hands full."
"Thank you," Amy focused her attention on Theo when Levi came running over. "Hey, I found you a snack while you were gone." She passed him a plastic bag of crackers. "I'm going to use the bathroom, then I'll grab Theo to change his diaper.
The few minutes Amy was gone was all it took for all hell to break loose. She returned to two crying kids and a panicked-looking husband. Sheldon was doing his best to comfort both kids, but had never been so happy to see Amy. "Theo started crying because you left. Then Levi started asking if he could stay here with my mom. He started crying when I told him this is what Missy wanted for him." Amy quickly reached to take Theo so Sheldon could focus his attention on Levi. The one-on-one approach worked much better to calm the kids and everyone had calmed down by the time they needed to board the plane.
"Hey, Levi, we're here. This is where we live," Amy glanced over her shoulder at the boy who had been struggling to stay awake the entirety of the drive from the airport.
He scanned his eyes up the building, "It looks like mommy's apartment."
"It does, doesn't it? Are you ready to go inside? Leonard and Penny live right across the hall from us," commented Amy while getting Theo out of the backseat.
Sheldon glanced at the trunk and shook his head to himself, "I'll come back for everything with Leonard." The group made their way to the fourth floor, Sheldon retrieved the keys from his pocket and unlocked the door. "This is home."
The couple was silent, watching Levi explore his new home. "Sheldon," Amy pointed at the crib behind the couch that wasn't there when they left. "Where did this come from?"
"It's Halley's old crib," came Leonard's voice from the doorway. "We mentioned your sleeping plan to Howard and Bernadette. They were planning to get her a big girl bed by the spring. None of us wanted Theo sleeping on the floor, so we helped get Halley's new bed set up, then brought that over here. It's not the best spot, but we can help you move the furniture around to make more room in the morning. Raj wanted to move everything when we set the crib up; I convinced him it would be best to wait for you."
Sheldon turned around and hugged his former roommate, much to his surprise. "Thank you. Can you help me bring everything up? I think these guys are about ready for bedtime. I know I am." No sooner did Sheldon and Leonard bring the boys' suitcases upstairs did Penny help Amy find their pajamas before leaving Sheldon and Amy to start a bedtime routine with the boys. They both fell asleep quickly, leaving their new guardians to retreat to their bedroom. Sheldon collapsed onto the bed after toeing off his shoes. "I've never been so happy to see my bed. It's good to be home, isn't it?" He asked, not getting a response, he turned to his right and saw Amy was already asleep, still in her clothes.
