Here we go. Chapter 2. The start of our story.

David Henson was a simple 23-year-old man living in New Jersey whose life was going nowhere. He had no job and he lived in a small apartment with his girlfriend, Julie Conners, and their daughter, Amanda. David's downpour started when he was 14. He met Julie at a restaurant and they became quite the item. Until 5 weeks later, she invited him to her house while her mom was out for the night. They had unprotected sex and a couple days later, Julie got pregnant. After David heard the news, he felt responsible. But most of it was Julie's fault because she wanted to experience raw sex. But David and Julie loved each other so much, they decided to have the baby. Their parents were a bit displeased at their actions from that night, but were proud of the choice they made.

One day, he was on his way to pick up Amanda from her school. There, he saw 2 of his old school friends, who were teachers at the school. "Hey! Mack! Dawn!" He called to them. "Hey David." Dawn said. "Have you guys seen Amanda?" David asked. "Oh yeah. Julie came by and picked her up. It was half-day today. Parent Career Day." Mack explained. David looked up and saw that they put up a sign over the doors that said 'Parent Career Day.'

David arrived back at his apartment. "Julie, I'm home!" He called as he entered. Julie walked over from the kitchen. "Hey baby." She said as they gave a kiss. "You alright?" She asked as David took of his coat and hung it up. "Yeah. I'm fine. Why didn't anybody tell me it was Career Day?" David asked. "What do you mean? I thought Amanda told you." Julie said. David put that to thought. "Huh. Guess she forgot." He said. Julie nodded in agreement. "Uh oh! Here he is." A voice came as a blonde girl, slightly shorter than Julie, came in from the living room. This was Olivia, Julie's sister. "How are ya, David?" She asked, giving her future brother-in-law a hug. "Good. How you doing, Olivia?" David asked, hugging her back. "Good." Olivia answered, pulling away and drinking her coffee. "Can you guys believe this weather?" She asked. "Yeah. Chilly." David answered. "Chilly, chilly, Chilly Willy the Penguin." Julie sang, earning a laugh from herself, her boyfriend and her sister. Suddenly, Olivia's phone started ringing from her belt. "Oh, my phone. Leave me alone." She groaned. "Hey. Why don't I go tell the little star speck you're home?" She asked. "That would be great." David answered. "Yeah. Thanks sis." Julie said as her sister walked to Amanda's room.

"Wow! Your sister really manages to squeeze a lot of gadgets onto that belt." David said. "I know right?!" Julie whispered as she walked back to the kitchen. "Yeah. I know! Olivia's like the Batgirl of-What does she do again?" David asked, forgetting Olivia's job. "Bond trader." Julie reminded. "Bond trader. Right. Got it." David said, looking over the mail. "Hey, how's it going with that virtual reality driving range we wanted to open?" Julie asked, pouring a glass of water. "Uh, getting there." David answered. "Just waiting for the technology to catch up with the idea. You know. It's not easy. There's a lot of moving parts." Julie then brought her boyfriend to a whispering stance. "You don't think we're gonna get evicted again, do you?" She asked worriedly. "I don't know." David said. For both he and Julie have been through the mill of unsuccessful jobs since giving birth to Amanda. "But I know we'll work things out. For Amanda's sake." Julie nodded. "You know, I think that maybe Amanda should probably stay with Olivia." She suggested. "You sure?" David asked. "Well, you know. Just until we can get settled." Julie explained. David nodded. "Hey Daddy." A voice called. David turned to see his 9-year-old daughter, Amanda. "Hey. You ready to carve it up?" He asked. "Let's get cool." Amanda answered. Amanda was part of her school's hockey team.

At an ice rink outside in the park, David and Julie were watching Amanda's game. "Alright, Mandy!" David called using a nickname they gave Amanda from when she was 5. "Break away, baby!" Julie called. Just then, one of the opponent skaters tripped Amanda with their hockey stick. As the referee blew the whistle, David and Julie rushed onto the ice, worried about their daughter and earning complaints from the other spectators. "Mandy, you alright?" David asked. "I'm fine." Amanda assured. "Would you 2 get off the ice?" David brought her to a whispering stance. "Listen. The left defenseman is a very weak skater." He explained. "He's right. You get on the left side, you got a clear shot at the goal." Julie added. "Great. Thanks guys." Amanda said. David and Julie smiled and stood up. "We're good here! She's good." David assured the crowd. "Yep. As you were, skaters." Julie added. "Game on!" David called as the whistle blew, earning a puck strike in the face. Julie and the crowd gasped as he fell on the ice. "I'm good!" He assured in pain.

After the game finished, the 3 were walking back to the apartment. "I'm telling you, kid, you tore it up out there today." David said. "Your father's right, Mandy. We think the NHL is a possibility." Julie added. "Yeah. I gotta be honest. I don't really wanna be a hockey player anymore." Amanda announced. David and Julie looked at her. "Alright. What do you wanna be?" Julie asked, trying to be understanding. "A bond trader." Amanda answered. "Bond trader?" David asked. "Yeah. Like what Aunt Olivia does. She took me to her office last week." Amanda explained. David and Julie looked at each other. "Okay. That's cool." Julie said, trying to be positive. "Yeah. What you wanna dress up in a monkey suit and tie every day? Like an automaton robot?" David asked, sounding like a robot, getting laughs from both his girlfriend and daughter. "Trust me. You can't play hockey in a cubical." He said. "He's right. It's pretty awkward." Julie added. "Well, Aunt Olivia's got a pretty big office." Amanda said. "That's not the point. Come on, you love hockey, Mandy." David said. "I still love it, Daddy, but bond trading's my fallback." Amanda said. "Your fallback?" David asked. "Wait a minute. Amanda, you're too young to have a fallback. And also, where did you even hear that word?" "Actually, that was kinda my fault." Julie said. "Yeah. Mom and Aunt Olivia were talking about all your different schemes." Amanda explained. "Oh. I kinda forgot you called them schemes." David said with a sheepish smile, making Julie giggle. "Yeah, she said it was time you both found a fallback." Amanda said. David and Julie looked at each other.

Amanda stopped for a minute. "Are we really moving again?" She asked in concern about her parents. David and Julie stopped with her. "We don't know, sweetheart." Julie said. "Yeah. But I don't know. I mean, there are some cool places out in the other cities." David explained. "Yeah." Amanda said leaning her head down. "Hey. Look at us. Look at us sweetheart." David said, making Amanda look up. "I wanna tell you something. I know things have been kinda up and down for me and your mother lately, and it's been hard for you." He explained. "But we really feel like our moment's coming and when it does, everything's just gonna come together." "But what if you're wrong and that you and Mommy are just ordinary people who should get a job?" Amanda asked. David and Julie looked at each other, thinking about Amanda's question. "You know what? We'll figure it out." David assured his daughter. "Come on. Let's go home." They continued back to their apartment.
