Sheldon awoke the next morning and groggily opened the bedroom door. He did a double take and rubbed his eyes when he found a crib outside the door and a small human curled up on his couch. The occupants of the living room were still sleeping, so he retreated into the bedroom. Sensing Sheldon crawling back into bed, Amy drowsily asked, "Are they okay?"
"Yeah. They're still sleeping." Amy had rolled over to face him, prompting him to lay on his side. "I forgot they were here until I went out there. How can we be responsible for two kids when I forgot they're here?"
Sleepily running her hand down his arm, Amy reassured him, "We'll be fine. You were exhausted last night, it's understandable that you weren't fully aware of what was going on when you woke up. I'm honestly surprised they both slept through the night. You know how hard it is to sleep your first night someplace new." As if on cue, a small voice called from the next room. "Guess it's time to get up."
"I've got him," Sheldon was already moving off the bed to take care of Theo. "You can sleep a few more minutes."
The couple spent the day sorting through the suitcases of Levi and Theo's belongings. Staring at the piles of clothes and toys that had taken over the apartment, Amy knew they were going to need something to contain their newfound chaos. "Penny and Leonard had a doctor's appointment earlier, so they aren't working today. I'm going to ask Penny if she wants to run to Target with me to get stuff to help keep everything organized."
"I could go with you," he offered until he noticed the look on Amy's face. "Or I can stay here with Levi and Theo. I get the feeling you want some girl time."
"I was actually thinking I could take Levi. He might like getting to help pick things for him and Theo. Nothing too crazy since we don't have a lot of room, but maybe he'd like a new blanket or a fun bath towel. I just want to get him out of the apartment for a little while. Theo should be napping soon, you can relax, see if Leonard wants to play some video games or catch up on your comic books."
Sheldon thought for a moment before hesitantly agreeing with his wife, "I guess that would be all right. It's Monday, so we're having Thai food across the hall. I texted Howard earlier, to make sure he and Bernadette are bringing Halley and Michael. I know Levi is older than them, but he might like having other kids to play with, at least until we can get him in school. Maybe while you're gone, I can look into a few schools, and see if we can get him enrolled before the end of the week."
Each pushing a cart through Target with Starbucks in hand, Penny and Amy caught up on the girl talk they had missed over the past several weeks. "Which one do you think Theo would like better?" Amy held up a few sippy cups for Levi to pick from for his brother.
"The green one. That's his favorite color. Can I pick one for me?"
"Aren't you a little big for sippy cups?" Amy started to ask before getting jabbed in the ribs by her best friend. "I'm sorry, sure. If that's what you want, you can pick one. Or we can look at the big kid cups and you can pick something you like from there."
With Levi distracted looking at drinkware, Penny brought up their living arrangements. "I know you said you and Sheldon were going to start looking at houses, but Leonard and I were talking. Sheldon's room is still empty. Rather than having the boys sleeping in the living room and not having any room for anything in your apartment. How do you think Sheldon would feel about us temporarily swapping apartments? Just for a month or two until you guys can find something bigger. It can't be forever, though, because we're going to want to get Sheldon's old room set up for the baby."
"Would I have my own room?" Levi interrupted after dropping a few items in the cart.
"I have to talk to Uncle Sheldon first, but if we do this, you'd have to share with Theo. Maybe you can have your own room once we move into a house," Amy suggested, steering the cart and the six-year-old down another aisle. "We gotta get some bath stuff for you and Theo, then I think we're good for now. We can always come back if we forgot something." Falling back in step with Penny, she replied to the idea of swapping apartments. "I'll talk to Sheldon tonight. After dinner. I don't foresee him not agreeing to it, though."
"I realized since we were gone for almost a month, and we were in Sweden and on our way home the two Mondays before we left for Texas, we hadn't had a Thai food night since the first week of December," Sheldon pointed out after they'd gotten Levi and Theo settled for the night and were in the process of getting ready for bed themselves.
"It has been a while, hasn't it? Um, Penny and I were talking earlier. She let me know she and Leonard had an idea to give us more room until we can find something bigger, but she made it very clear that it would only be temporary," Amy started.
Sheldon quickly interrupted his wife after climbing under the covers, "Leonard told me earlier. They want us to swap apartments for the time being. Leonard gave me a very firm, end-of-April end date so they have time to get my old room ready for their baby. That would give us three months to find someplace bigger. I think that's reasonable, so I told him we'll make this apartment work for this week, then swap over the weekend."
"Really?" Amy crawled into bed next to her husband.
"Yeah, but I don't want to talk about this," he stopped the conversation by shifting closer to Amy and passionately kissing her. "It's not on my schedule for tonight, but are you interested?"
Amy pulled back and looked Sheldon in the eye, "Really? The boys are right outside the door. What if they hear us or Levi tries coming in to use the bathroom?"
"The boys are asleep. I know we've never had to before, but we'll just have to be quiet," the physicist was practically pleading.
Smiling and leaning to kiss him, Amy commented, "Of course, I'm interested."
I got a question asking if Penny was still pregnant & wanted to clarify the timeline of this story a little. They don't say there's a time jump before the finale episodes, but the actual Nobel ceremony takes place in early-mid December, with the winners being announced in early October. This story starts about 2 weeks after the Nobel ceremony, so Penny is only a few months pregnant at this point.
