Chapter 42: Simply the Best
Baldavia, Hapes Sector, Vaston's estate, 0 ABY 7 months, 29 days, 8 hours
The next day, Vaston had guided his royal shuttle to the world of Baldavia, with Valles at his side. It was a world of great beauty, featuring many picturesque rock formations and many oceans and smaller seas, with some of the nicest beaches in the sector. Baldavia was in the more valuable part of the sector, about 20 parsecs from Hapes Prime, between Theselon and Gallinore along the primary hyperspace lane. It was not possible to go directly from the capital, as there were various nebulae blocking the path. Still, their trip took about 20 minutes with a fast class 1.0 hyperdrive. He soon set the ship down on the landing pad area of his modest estate on the planet – about 10,000 square metres and four levels – with a tasteful architecture that reflected the dry and sunny surroundings. The beach on the Sea of Dreams was about 200 metres from the door that led to the outer courtyards.
"We're going to be staying here, darling, for the next two nights."
"It's lovely, Vas. Such natural wonders, like nothing on Lianna."
He chuckled, "you live on a very utilitarian planet, Val. Which, I do say, has its nicer spots, but I prefer the City, so well organized and civilized. But on a world like this, we go for moods. There are many resorts near here, but this stretch of the shore is private – belonging … to me. Of course. Let's go inside, shall we?"
She nodded and smiled, then locked up his right arm with her left. Soon, service droids had fetched her bags and taken them inside, up to the Master's suite on the fourth level. They preferred to walk, as Valles noted, happily, "I had better use my legs at least some of the time … it won't do to have them simply shrivel up and melt away."
Vaston gave a hearty laugh at her usual witticisms. "Valles, Valles. We shan't have that now…"
He showed her some of the features of the manor, which had many rooms dedicated to "male pleasures" such as smoking and sports, with lots of wood paneling (in various shades) in some, while others had walls of stacked limestone slabs that echoed the local terrain.
Valles nodded, appreciatively, then asked, "so where might your harem stay … when they're here?"
He simply smiled. "Various rooms, but you won't be seeing any of them on this visit, Val. It's all about you, as it should be. There isn't anyone in this Galaxy to compare with you in almost every conceivable category."
It was her turn to chuckle. "Nice save, Vas …"
They had made it to the Master suite and she was glancing around the elegant bedroom.
"Might you have a spot of water, dear? I'm a bit parched …"
"Certainly." He made a few hand gestures, then a glass came – from somewhere – and moved gently into Valles's left hand. She drank some of the cool liquid, which came from a spring elsewhere on his property.
"Ah … how satisfying. I'd say far better than our basic water on Lianna, which is so processed that you really can't find a taste like this."
"True," Vaston nodded. "I've wanted to bring you here for a long time. Glad we finally got the chance. You're a hard woman to catch up with these days … but I understand. So, Valles, my sweet, what's it like being Queen?"
She took a deep breath, then swallowed another swig of the tasty water. "Vas, it's actually quite fulfilling. To see the looks on peoples' faces in the receiving lines when I'm greeting them in the City … they are filled with hope. Especially the young children – both boys and girls – I suppose I'm like the storybook young queen that inspires love and adulation."
"And that's what you've always wanted, right? Watching you grow up, it was always about Grandpa Kerred. You were the most filial and dutiful child, but I'd always felt that you didn't get the love from your family that you always longed for."
A tear came to Valles's eye as she listened to him.
"Yes. And you've always tried to give it to me when you could, but how was it growing up with your mother?"
"It … was interesting, really. She can be so loving and attentive, but there's a general sense of awkwardness with her, as I'm sure you've noticed. I felt loved, though. She's had such high hopes for me, but I'm afraid I've let her down. It's nothing that she said, but with her, so much is unspoken. Don't get me wrong … I love her as much as any son should."
Valles sighed. "Yes, neither of us had the ideal childhood. But when I'm in her lap, I can feel her strong affection, and with her, I would imagine everything is larger than life. I mean, isn't that what the Hapians expect from their Queen-Mother? There are statues of her everywhere – although I've not seen one here yet – and that doesn't happen by accident."
Vaston smiled. "True. And, I can assure you that most of the adulation is spontaneous. Life here is rather good – just like it is on Lianna – and she's usually seen as the reason. But, now that you mention it, I commissioned a sculpture of her that I keep here. Would you like to see it?"
"Yes, I would. Very much … let me change first, and I'll be right with you."
He nodded, while Valles proceeded into the dressing room off the main bedroom of the master suite. Noting the excellent weather – with the temperature around 25 degrees (Celsius) – she chose a cheery short-sleeved green dress that went to just above her knees and was low-cut, such that her bosom was partly visible. On her feet, she chose a pair of open sandals made from the durable Pasminian goat hide, which were most comfortable, as this material tended to form a shape that conformed to the wearer's feet. Comfortable footwear is truly a gift from the Force … she chuckled softly.
As she liked to do in informal settings, Valles wore no bra and was feeling relaxed – and practically in love with her host. She told herself that it felt right, yet she didn't know where she wanted to take it. Just sit back and let things happen … not my normal demeanor, but love cannot be rushed. He's always cared about me … She thought wistfully.
Soon she emerged, and her host had also changed, into a pair of shorts that went just past his knees. The Hapian Crown Prince was about 185 cm tall and was, in her mind, the perfect dimension for their physical relationship. When he saw the dress, his arms opened wide and she fell into them … again.
"I'm falling for you, dear," Valles chuckled. "In more ways than one."
He lovingly caressed her luxurious full raven mane, marveling at how soft it was, then he smoothed her dress as she spun around to face him, then went for a quick peck on the lips … only she wanted more, and he felt his arms being grasped as the Liannese was becoming aroused. But then, Valles pulled away, wanting to cool things down, as she was not ready for more intimacy with her host – just yet. Vaston marveled inwardly at how skilled she was at driving the affection they both were clearly feeling. They were more or less alone together, something he always treasured with her, but there was no pressure and it all seemed so natural.
"Let's have a look at that piece," he offered.
"Sure."
They strolled, arm in arm, over to the portal, which opened immediately, and then proceeded to the anteroom. The lift soon appeared, and they went down to the second level. The doors opened, and he led her through a couple more portals, and they entered a large room that had plenty of sunlight, due to some special windows made of transparisteel that somewhat magnified objects seen through them. This provided much natural light for the various art pieces arrayed on the floor in different places. Some internal walls were there, ideal for viewing various flat pieces that had been created with local materials. And there it was, in the center of the gallery, a larger-than-life depiction of Queen-Mother Vestalia in polished marble. The statue showed the queen in battle armor, with her sword drawn, and a look of quiet determination on her face, which had a trace of a smile.
Valles started to admire it, and noted. "Was she ever like this … I mean, here, she seems more athletic and dashing. It is a great piece."
Vaston nodded, and smiled. "I looked at perhaps a hundred different ideas for this, but I've long wanted to see Mother in this way. I named it 'the Defender.' And yes, she was once much thinner and extremely beautiful – some 150 years or so ago. I have many images in my collection."
Valles looked at him and smiled, then took his hand and squeezed it gently. "This is very personal for you, my love … you know, as I've come to know her, I've wondered about her history. I know how powerful she is with the Force, but it's quite relaxed … tell me, Vas, how many Force-sensitive Hapians are there today?"
"That's an interesting question. Many of us have this ability at birth, but few cultivate it. Mother has always kept her harvested eggs – hundreds of them – in perfect condition on her palace grounds on Hapes Prime. This is a well-kept secret."
Valles gasped, slightly. "Remarkable. What does she want to do with them … and, better yet, how many brothers or sisters do you have, Vas?"
He looked at her for a second, then noted. "I don't know … I mean, there is so much about Mother that she keeps secret."
"So I guess this will be more of a 'need to know' basis … but if I had brothers or sisters I didn't know about, I'd feel strange. How do you deal with it?"
"I manage. Mother makes me feel like an only child – similar to you – and I know she loves me … but she tends to compartmentalize things."
They stood silently for a bit, admiring the statue, as Valles considered the implications of Vestalia and how powerful she might actually be – and why her ambitions seemed to be limited to her home sector. When she sat in the Queen-Mother's lap, she felt totally at home. The energy coming from Vestalia was always warm and inviting, and Valles started to see her more and more in a maternal role. She then thought about her natural mother, Mirella Santhé, and the difficult position she had been placed in. To see another person – especially someone as prominent as Vestalia – taking that role made Valles feel a touch guilty. She told herself that she did indeed love the woman who gave birth to her, despite the strange circumstances of it.
Vaston considered the implications of getting closer to Valles and seeing her as far more than just another conquest. The Liannese Queen was extremely powerful and he told himself that made her more attractive than ever. But settling down with her? Valles, I love you, no doubt. Being with you is always so special, but maybe that's because we keep things from getting too serious. However, being your husband might be rewarding in many ways. Let's say Shaak Ti does indeed become Empress – how long will she want to hold the throne – and do you, dear Valles, see yourself as her successor? But what of the other Togruta, Ahsoka Tano? Where does she fit in … He thought for a minute about the circumstance with Shaak and her various arrangements, then concluded it was something better left alone. There were enough items on his plate at the current time.
The two of them stayed in the gallery for a bit longer, as Vaston pointed out the significance of some of the pieces – framed art and more sculpture, both representational and abstract. Some were by famous Hapian artists from past centuries – gifts from his mother – and others were works by young up-and-coming talents from Baldavia itself. After Valles had gotten a good sense of Vaston's taste in art – which she found most intriguing – they returned to the fourth level of the building and had a light meal on the deck overlooking the sea, served by droids. It became obvious that this residence was not one that he shared with too many others and she was one of the few who'd been to see it in recent months.
As she gazed out to the water – the Sea of Dreams was about 2.5 million square km, which seemed endless from this vantage point – she remarked, "it's lovely … we don't have such expanses of water on Lianna, just several lakes, which are maintained by the Water Board."
"Have you ever considered a shift in priorities?" Vaston asked.
"Sure, but I doubt at this point that anything like a majority of us would go along with it, and since it's not a high priority for me, I see little to gain by bucking public sentiment."
He laughed. "So the Queen is not exactly an absolute monarch … at least when it comes to her home world."
"Not at all," she chuckled. "And I doubt Shaak would be that kind of Empress, either. As near as I can tell, she probably wants to move the Galaxy back to something more like a republic, with herself as something less autocratic than what Palpatine currently occupies. But ..." She raised her hand as a signal of caution. "This is pure speculation on my part, based on my reading of her thus far. Shaak Ti is outwardly gentle and thoughtful, but I can already detect far more below the surface. I intend to get to know her better. She hasn't accomplished this overthrow yet and I still don't know how she is going to do it."
"Hmm, then we should hedge our bets. I'm sure my mother will agree on that. Her decision long ago to keep our sector sealed off from the rest of the Galaxy has been most wise. Of course, we do allow trade and tourism, and present a pleasant face to other worlds."
"So … how exactly do you think your mother has kept the Empire at bay this long?"
"Mostly the same way Lianna has. Be outwardly supportive and loyal, while managing our own affairs such that no interference with Imperial prerogatives takes place. Plus I think she and Palpatine have reached some kind of mutual understanding over the years."
"Yes, I had started to gather that. It would explain much, but, how, exactly was it reached, and how long ago?"
"That, my dear, I have little insight into at this point."
"Have you spoken about it with her?"
"Only once or twice. Essentially her position was that we should not trouble ourselves with those outside concerns. And I get the feeling that Mother's power is significant enough to keep them away should she so desire. You may notice there are no Imperial ships in the sector and that has carried on for as long as I can remember."
Valles thought about that for a bit. Quite interesting, from my standpoint, dear. But let's consider what you are saying and if it might be true … that would mean that she and Palpatine reached this understanding long ago. She told me once of a certain mutual respect, but she also seems more than okay with idea of Empress Shaak.
She then nodded, snapping her head downward for a second, then turned to Vaston. "My love, after we finish our breakfast, might we take a short stroll along the beach?"
"Certainly, darling …"
Baldavia, Hapes Sector, the Queen-Mother's palace, 0 ABY 7 months, 29 days, 15 hours
Later that day, after Vaston and Valles had plenty of walking, a little time in the water, and a light lunch, followed by the Hapian interpretation of golf – played on the Prince's own course, with assistance from droids – they made plans to visit a more formal palace on Baldavia.
Living on Baldavia was quite rewarding for those fortunate enough to be allowed to live there, and most who were gainfully employed worked either for the Crown – Vestalia's royal presence was felt on every one of the 120 worlds – or at the many resorts. Some of these were near various bodies of water, others perched higher up in more mountainous regions of the planet. There was also an agricultural sector, but the farms were mostly tended to by various droids, such that the owners and managers ran them from more remote locations. Baldavia had a capital city of some ten million (the planet itself had no more than 200 million all told) and there were smaller cities sprinkled around the world in various locations. But much of it was sparsely settled and the Queen-Mother had decided to keep it that way, as the planet was one of her favorites. As on other worlds in the Hapes Sector, there was a network of high-speed mag-lev "rail" lines that connected all the important cities and could cover the distances at speeds up to Mach 5.
In the center of Vestaliana City (each planet's capital was named for the Queen-Mother) on Baldavia, was Her Majesty's official palace, another elegant structure of some twenty levels that sprawled over a square kilometer and contained many royal offices and the like spread out over its expanse. Living in the building – and with her own ample space – was the appointed "Pa'tsa", or King, of the planet, a mostly ceremonial post in terms of governing power, but someone expressly loyal to Vestalia, and, by extension, to Vaston as well. All of the 120 planetary Pa'tsa and some members of their courts were part of Vestalia's "secret society" – which wasn't entirely secret, though its doings mostly were. The planetary Governor also maintained her own residence elsewhere in the City, but these posts served for designated terms of office and Vestalia permitted them to serve as many as she saw fit. The Governor and the Pa'tsa were usually on good terms, but sometimes there was a friendly rivalry.
Vaston explained all of these arrangements to Valles on their way over to the Palace, via his private shuttle, which covered the 3000 km fairly quickly. When they landed at the specially designated spot, Valles had changed into a glittery turquoise ensemble signifying her connection to Lianna, while Vaston was more low-key in a two-piece black velvet suit. When they debarked, they were met by a group of courtiers employed by the Pa'tsa.
"Welcome, your Highness and good to see you again. Everything is as you have specified."
"Greetings, and I present to you, Her Exalted Majesty, the Queen of Lianna and all its protectorate worlds."
Valles stepped forward, smiling, then extended her gloved right hand. One by one, each courtier kissed it.
"Such beauty … we are truly honored, your Majesty."
Vaston extended his right arm, which Valles grasped and they followed inside, where his mobile royal throne had arrived. He was used to having two members of his harem mount the throne with him, but the courtiers could see that wasn't on the schedule this particular afternoon, and Valles was assisted into her place next to him.
"We'll take it from here, guys …" Vaston chuckled, as the throne quickly moved away and headed for the lift. He'd had a special one installed for his own personal use – after all they were in the palace that his mother had originally built – and was available for the Pa'tsa when that person so desired. They soon arrived on the tenth level and headed straight for the royal receiving area, where Vaston and/or his mother would sometimes greet their guests. The current Pa'tsa – in this case a woman – was occupying it on this occasion. She was quite a sight – a tall lady of almost albino complexion topped with white hair in a buzz cut. Her lip color matched her royal outfit, an outer robe of metallic blue, made from a plastic-like substance that caught light and reflected it back. She was seated on the (stationary) throne, being attended on either side by two younger females that were lovingly caressing each of her arms.
Vaston helped Valles dismount and she stood, smiling, as she took the full measure of the Pa'tsa, who didn't miss a beat.
"Your highness," she said, as she bowed low to Vaston, who then announced Valles's presence.
"Your Majesty, Queen Valles. You are every bit as beautiful as I've read about … but the pictures hardly do you justice. How honored we are that you are on our humble world of Baldavia."
"Thank you," Valles chuckled, as she extended her hand, which was immediately kissed. "I'm pleased to meet you, your highness, honored Pa'tsa. Vaston speaks highly of you and your loyalty to his mother."
She then bowed again. "I would love to know you, beautiful Queen Valles. I am Len'tai Azhulia Zha'ma, Baldavia's ruler. Anything you desire during your stay here, your Majesty, you have but to ask for it."
Vaston then spoke up. "Thank you, Zhul. Valles and I are only going to be here two nights. I wanted her to get a feel for the planet and I thought you might appreciate the chance to meet her. We are longtime friends since our childhoods and I am delighted that we have grown closer."
"I see …" the Pa'tsa smiled again, something she was in the habit of doing. "Will there be wedding bells in the near future? You are quite blessed, my Patasi …"
"Not … so fast." He grinned, while glancing at Valles sideways. "But you'll be among the first to know."
After a few more pleasantries, the affectionate couple were shown to Vaston's 30-room suite that overlooked most of the planet's Vestaliana City from the top level of the building. Once ensconced, Vaston tapped an order into a tablet that he carried with him to the grand bedroom, where Valles gaped at the huge bed, seemingly capable of accommodating up to ten persons. Seeing her reaction, he chuckled.
"Not to worry, dear, we'll be alone."
"I should hope so …" she laughed out loud.
"Might I help you with your lovely gown, Valles?"
"Please…"
The Prince proceeded to carefully pull down the rear zipper about 15 cm, enough for the straps to be easily slid from her slender shoulders. The Queen then stood in her satin underwear, as her beau gently laid the gown across the foot of the massive bed, then quickly and deftly removed his own clothes. Valles was quickly out of her underwear and the pair were soon enveloped in the luxurious sheets. They kissed each other in various places, with Vaston carefully taking his time, not wanting to rush anything and risk spoiling what had been as perfect a day as he could recall. Though he had as ample a harem as any young royal could want, he knew none of them were anywhere near as tempting as this incredible little queen from an Outer Rim world.
From her standpoint, Valles was blissfully happy, able to simply lose herself in the moment and abandon all caution. She knew his love was genuine, and she knew why. I am simply the best … she chuckled softly to herself, as he continued the physical worship of her elegant little figure. When the moment came, he was sure to make it last as long as possible, driving her to repeated crescendos of excitement … and when it was done, all Valles wanted to do was to kiss him over and over, truly feeling elated as the afterglow was like few she had ever experienced with him before. She thought about it, realizing it was a fleeting moment and it was best to live in it as long as she could. Why spoil a love of this kind with any talk of commitment? And she was sure he had similar feelings, and so what if his mother wasn't entirely happy with the arrangement? They had nothing but time, and the entire Galaxy spread out before them …
After another hour had passed, the bubbly wine and delicious morsels of local species from the Sea of Dreams was brought up to their suite. They had each donned soft robes and had taken their seats looking out the window for a view of the city, now all lit up – some of it in turquoise colors to honor Valles on her visit. Vaston used the Force to pour them each a glass, and they toasted their love and the beautiful future they felt certain would come. But why look ahead … people need to spend more time in the moment … she thought, and she knew he was thinking the same thing.
Vaston's tablet lit up and he glanced at it for a second.
"Valles, darling," he said softly. "The Pa'tsa wishes to pay us a short visit. Are you up for that?"
She smirked. "Why not? I'm curious about her."
He signaled a reply and, a few minutes later, her highness Azhulia had arrived, accompanied by her two maidens, girls that appeared to be in their teens and who clearly worshiped the striking figure of the Pa'tsa. When she stood up, the lady was nearly two metres in height, wrapped in a gown of unique fabric, a bright metallic blue that shone like it was vinyl but was instead of natural origin. She stepped forward, leaving her maidens behind, and bowed low.
"Good evening, beautiful Queen Valles. We are absolutely honored by your gracious presence in our humble city and our most fortunate planet."
Valles groaned inwardly. She was used to this type of puffery from those on other worlds that were funneling billions in tribute to her daily. She stifled a smirk and spoke.
"Thank you, dear." Valles then behaved as a Queen should, and extended her hand, whereupon Zhul took it gracefully, being sure to thank her for the privilege of kissing it.
"So," Valles half chuckled. "What might I do for you?"
"Oh, you are too kind, your Majesty. I simply extend my welcome and am your humble servant as long as you are here on our graced world. The city extends its greetings and we are so honored …"
"So noted. And don't get me wrong, I am deeply appreciative." She relaxed for a second, then turned to Vaston. "Love, might you give us a couple of minutes? I would like to hear the lovely Pa'tsa out."
"Certainly, dear." Vaston obediently rose, then went outside onto the balcony overlooking the city below, sipping his flute.
Valles, nodded her head in the direction of the seat he had just vacated. Zhul took it quickly.
"You have my undivided attention…" Valles smirked.
The Pa'tsa smiled. "Your majesty … I have the distinct impression that you would like to make more inroads here in the Hapes Sector. I'm the one that can make that happen for you …"
Valles smiled, and winked at her, one of her eyes twinkling.
Zhul picked up the cue, and extended both her hands, which Valles quickly grasped, then surged a strong current of energy into the woman. She had quickly detected Zhul's Force signature. Yes, your highness. I want to know more, much more, about this wonderful place. Vestalia and I are close but I would like another set of eyes. You seem like an enterprising young person and I like that. Let's keep in touch.
Valles then picked up Vaston's tablet and dictated a message into it via the Force. She then glanced at Zhul, who immediately took it from her and entered her private address. The two women glanced at each other and gave sly smiles. Valles then stood and Zhul did as well. Again the Hapian princess bowed and kissed Valles's right hand. At that point, Valles sent a Force signal and Vaston returned.
Zhul curtsied to him and they walked off for a couple of seconds. She then left them, accompanied by her two maidens. Vaston then returned to be with Valles.
"I trust you handled everything to your satisfaction?"
Valles scoffed slightly. "I'm good."
Lianna, Livornia district, Ana's Palace, 0 ABY 8 months, 2 days
Countess Ry Kyver – the Lady of Kiveria – was checking herself in the mirror in the small washroom, just off from Duchess Ana's semi-formal dining room. As she applied some lip gloss, she was feeling rather pleased overall. Her light brown complexion was contrasted with the elegant mane of curly dark hair that framed her friendly face, with its expressive dark brown eyes and gentle brows. She had on a chic long-sleeved silk dress of white with black horizontal stripes that complemented her overall look well.
Ah, Ry, you've really come a long way. The days of the Ministry are just a not-so-fond memory now and it's hail Lady Ry, the Countess of Kiveria, on the super-important world of Lianna, the dominant planet on the entire Outer Rim. Plus, you've worked your way into the heart of the lovely Duchess Capra, perhaps second only in importance to the Queen herself. A rather heady situation. So … is it time to see where this goes? My coffers are running over with billions of credits. There is my grand country estate, and my own luxury starship – not quite a true noble-lady's yacht, but one that still makes a strong statement in opulence – that is truly state-of-the-art on this amazing world. I feel ready for anything now … my guest has arrived.
Her makeup all in order, Ry entered the dining area, a smaller room with a table that seated up to six. Ana was awaiting her, attired in a brick-red long sleeved gown, with her black hair hanging freely, split into three portions – some on either side of her face, descending to her breasts, with the rest behind her. As Ry entered, Ana approached her and they shared a short kiss, then complimented each other on their look.
"So when does she get here?" Ana asked, with a smirk.
"Should be any minute now. She was taking the shuttle down from the City, and I had arranged for a pickup at Livornia Spaceport."
Within about thirty seconds, Ry's com device lit up. She glanced at it.
"Right on time."
Soon, "Lady" Qi'ra of Crimson Dawn strode into the room, after being shown in by the Duchess's general staff. She was dressed formally, in a blue-green gown with plenty of sparkle, and a soft fur over her shoulders. Ry nodded to her, with a smile.
"Glad you could make it, my friend …"
Qi'ra returned the nod and grinned at Ry.
"You're looking well, Lady Ry."
She then curtsied to Ana, who offered her right hand. Qi'ra made a show of her deference to the Duchess, pulling up her skirt and bowing, then gently taking the Duchess's hand and kissing it.
"Please have a seat with us, my dear," Ana purred. "We are glad to welcome you to Livornia."
"Thank you, ever so much … so, mi-lady, what are you serving us this evening? When I received this invite from the countess, I was eagerly looking forward to the fine cuisine of Livornia."
"We'll start with some assorted fruit from our groves … tangy and sweet at the same time. Following that, a light carpaccio and some flavorful cheeses, topped off by a chocolate souffle and some of the best cognac on the planet,"
"I can hardly wait," Qi'ra gushed, inwardly understanding that dinner with Ana was a rare treat for anyone on Lianna. "Your reputation as a gourmet is well-earned."
Ana simply chuckled, then smiled. Ry took the liberty of pouring the wine, a white varietal that also grew on the estate.
Ry had succeeded in convincing Ana that the Corellian could be useful to them as they continued to build their network of contacts and thus further their role in Valles's governance over the Outer Rim planets that had been assigned to the Duchess. Ana had been skeptical for a time, but the more time she spent with Qi'ra, the more she saw the possibilities. Qi'ra was clearly quite clever and had a pleasing manner about her that reminded Ana of Valles when she was young and still climbing the ladder.
Ry was not sure that Ana would come to enjoy Qi'ra's company, but was inwardly glad that she did, as her personal relationship with the Duchess grew more serious as the months went by. The Countess had now resided on Lianna for almost 13 years and most of the gentry on the planet had come to accept her as one of their own. Of course, it didn't hurt that she was in favor with the Queen – something that other peers were a bit envious of, as Valles had a way of letting you know where you stood. But being in a relationship with Ana and being respected by the Queen was as much as anyone could ask for on Lianna.
From Qi'ra's standpoint, her progress with Duchess Ana was a major coup, as she believed Ana was second only to Valles in importance on the planet and she was determined to impress the Duchess at every opportunity. Ana, of course, was rather shrewd, yet often far friendlier than some of the other Liannese nobles – but mistaking her kindness as something to take advantage of could be a major pitfall. Qi'ra had thus far navigated these waters expertly. The Clouzon-36 find scored major points with Ana – as Valles was quite keen on using it for some as yet secret purpose – and with the Black Sun Vigos as well. So much so that Qi'ra was now aiming to reestablish Crimson Dawn under her direction as more of a business-oriented enterprise that maintained a wide range of contacts and was involved in various pursuits.
This night's dinner was going to be a learning opportunity for Qi'ra, as she was hoping Ana would take her further into her confidence. Thus her entrance this evening was crucial in her mind to set the right tone and show her own touch of glamor. Ry was inwardly pleased as well, that her friend was mindful of how important appearances could be on Lianna. The fashion industry on the planet was quite well developed – for men as well as women – and the cut of one's clothes was often seen as a marker of one's importance in society. Queen Valles set the tone, of course, and, when appearing in public, she made sure never to wear anything more than once – at least within a single year. The color turquoise was often featured by the Queen – as it represented the basic hue of the sky overhead – and was part of the now established royal house of Santhé and was featured in her many robes, gowns, and crowns. Thus, Qi'ra's choice of gown was meant to evoke the Queen and this was never a wrong move.
"I love your gown, dear," Ana chuckled. "Quite vibrant."
"Thank you, mi-lady."
"Now then, we're both interested in some of your ideas for us this evening …" Ana glanced at Ry for a second, then continued. "Take your time, dear, this is an informal occasion. I know Ry likely thinks I spend too much time on business, but … it's rather a hobby of mine as well."
"And mine, also," Qi'ra replied. "Always looking to improve our standing, Duchess."
Seeing she had the floor, the Corellian ventured into another area, to test the waters.
"You two ladies might be interested in this. I've built a collection of some interesting artifacts. These come from various civilizations around the Galaxy. They represent history, but something more …"
Ry silently drummed her fingers on the table, wondering about this. This seems like there might be something of use here … or … something from my past …
Ana smiled. "Go on, Qi'ra. We're interested."
"Well …" Qi'ra smiled, giving a wink. "I'm not completely familiar with some of these pieces. I've come by them in various ways. Some I purchased at auction. Some were given to me as payment. Others I was gifted from various individuals. But there are some odd pieces – some of which I believe require the ability to use the Force."
Ana glanced at Ry, whom she found doing the same. She then asked, "Qi'ra, what do you know about the Force?"
"More than most … at least, more than most of those who are not sensitive to it. However, I once was in the employ of an individual that was quite proficient with it."
Ry smirked for a second, then wondered exactly who Qi'ra was referring to. She thought better of asking this question at this particular time, as it might seem to Qi'ra that they were putting her on the spot. So she asked instead, "where are you keeping these … artifacts?"
"In a safe place … I've got a ship, with a gallery onboard."
Ana thought about all that Qi'ra was saying, and decided there could be something worth seeing here. After all, she knew Qi'ra was greatly desirous of making a strong impression with her, and she also knew that much of Liannese nobility wouldn't give the Corellian a second look once they learned of her role with Crimson Dawn and her ties to Black Sun. Galactic criminal syndicates were not exactly welcome on the planet, and Valles herself would not want her own ties with them to become public knowledge, what with her coronation ceremony on the horizon.
The Queen expects me to protect her from any bad publicity that might arise here, but at the same time, if I discover something valuable, I have to tell her. I've got plenty of funds and this might be a very good investment, down the road. And what would Qi'ra know about the Force, anyway?
"Where is this ship now," the Duchess asked.
"On the southeast Outer Rim, in a safe place," Qi'ra smirked. "Would you ladies like to see it?"
"I would," Ry answered, while Ana smiled at her and nodded.
"I would be happy to show you …"
Ana interjected. "We'll go on the Concordia. I think you'll find it most accommodating."
Inwardly, Qi'ra beamed with happiness. Being invited aboard the Duchess's yacht was a sign that she was becoming more accepted. But she maintained an even disposition, and simply replied, "Absolutely. It's quite an honor, mi-lady."
"Qi'ra," Ana continued. "Would you like to stay overnight with us here? I've plenty of space and the staff will take care of everything for you … even nightclothes for guests are regularly seen to."
The Corellian's jaw dropped at this offer. "I'd be delighted, Duchess. This is a lovely palace, so I hope this may the first of many visits to come."
"Then it's settled. We leave tomorrow, for … where did you say it was?"
Qi'ra knew Ana had her own way of testing her. She's a shrewd one, that's for sure. I guess one doesn't reach her level in this society otherwise. "Mi-lady, I will provide the coordinates once we are underway."
Ana chuckled, while gazing into Qi'ra's eyes for a couple of seconds. "That will be fine."
As the threesome concluded their meal, Ry and Ana went off to the Duchess's master suite and Qi'ra was shown to her guest accommodations. As she entered the room, a young maid curtsied to her and offered to turn down the bed for her, then handed her a luxurious gown and robe set to change into after her bath. She even offered to scrub the Corellian clean before her evening soak in a warm drawn bath, and Qi'ra simply couldn't resist such luxury.
The scrub was gentle, but invigorating, as the maid sprayed her back with warm water and a scented liquid soap that was quickly sponged away. She was then helped into the tub that was a toasty 40 degrees (Celsius) and she then relaxed, laying her back against the sloped rear wall of the tub. Qi'ra was then left to herself for about 15 minutes (her desired soak time), and as she leaned against the tub, she let out a sigh of contentment. If they could only see me now, back on Corellia. You've hit the big time, Lady Q … this is how they live on Lianna, quite civilized. After she had been helped out of the tub and completely dried, she pulled on the silky pink gown and felt the sumptuousness of the robe. I'm just going to go to sleep like this, thank you very much … The bed, with its satin sheets and soft white fur blanket was beckoning her and she simply fell into it blissfully, and was soon asleep.
While Qi'ra was relaxing, Ana wanted to sound Ry out about the nature of these "artifacts." The Mandalorian thought about it for a while, then mentioned something called "Force crystals."
"Oh? What exactly are these, Ry? I knew that lightsabres contained crystals that powered them. Did you ever own a sabre?"
"I did not, actually. My time in the Jedi did not involve being a warrior or training to be a Knight. So I never received one, but I learned more about the Force in my spare time and decided I wanted to master it. When Palpatine became the Emperor, I had risen in power and I became the Minister of Agriculture. It was much later that I learned more about the secret temple on Lothal, once I had won Valles's trust."
"Really? You know … I've not really spent much time there, as Valles awarded that world to Berit – after originally giving it to me – about a few months back. The Lothalians had revolted against the Empire, but Valles decided to take control and allow them a measure of self-government. Berit is very smart, and serves the Queen well. I've always seen her as a worthy adversary."
Ry chuckled. "I remember that, in fact, you had delegated the oversight role to me. But Ryder Azadi was doing a good job as the new governor and Valles decided she wanted me to do other things … but this was yet another example of the Queen making the best of a seemingly deteriorating situation. Lothal has done well under our protection since. So, with her blessing, I did some 'fact finding' on my own there and found some rather interesting things. One of these was the presence of what appeared to be an ancient Jedi temple."
"And this was before she put you on the Malachor assignment. I see. Tell me more …"
"Well, Ana. Due to my own Force abilities, I was able to raise this temple from the ground, and some strange things began to happen. I got the distinct feeling that the people of Lothal had little idea about any of this. And, because you have told me that Duchess Berit is not Force-sensitive, she's not going to see the implications of this."
"Ry, I can surely see one of the implications … and that is, Valles has to know about this so she can decide how to handle it. We're derelict in our duty to her otherwise."
"Oh … I guess I didn't think it through. Do you think she's going to be bothered by this ... at all?"
"I'm not sure, but I've learned never to second-guess her on matters of this kind. But I can assure you of one thing … she'll see Lothal as her property and will have plenty to say about this." Ana paused, then looked Ry in the eye. "When you say, 'some rather interesting things,' what exactly are you referring to?"
Ry took a deep breath, and then touched the back of Ana's left hand, while smiling and nodding to her lover. "OK, when I started to raise the Temple, it took a large amount of energy on my part, but I was indeed able to enter the structure. Once inside, I had many visions. Some of these went back to my time in the Jedi, others over my time as the Agriculture minister."
Ry paused, and gazed at Ana with a pained look. "Darling, I'm not proud of some of the things I have done in the past, and I know that I have to atone for them."
"What things?" Ana looked at her with a deepening concern.
"Ana ... I've been selfish, and a little greedy in the past, and I've caused iniquity for some people. I've thought a bit on how to repay them. But I believed I was carrying out the Emperor's will at the time. I've done harm to the people of some worlds in the Galaxy and I'm now in a position – as a Liannese countess – to begin to repay them."
"Can you be more specific?"
"Sure. One of those worlds was the planet Yemer. It's in the Mid Rim, in the Taldot Sector, roughly halfway between Kashyyyk and Charros IV. At the time, I was also carrying out the directive to eliminate Force-sensitive people, which Lord Vader was also doing with the Inquisitorium. There were a group on that world known as the Siluans."
Ana wracked her brain with this reference, but was unable to connect it. "I don't know them. Were they connected to the Jedi?"
"Not directly, but some ex-Jedi have helped them in the past. Vader was attempting to find all of the ex-Jedi that had not been accounted for after the Purge, but the Siluans were not on the list. At least not that I was aware of."
"Did you discuss this with him?"
"No, he and I were not exactly allies. Indeed, he saw my relationship with the Emperor as undermining his own, and he was looking for ways to – shall we say – neutralize me."
Ana nodded slowly. "Ry, I think we need to sit down and go a little deeper here. I can see where you're going with this, and I cannot help you until I know the full story and all of its implications."
"Sure," Ry nodded, feeling a touch apprehensive, but appreciating Ana's concern. The Duchess led her down a flight of stairs and they descended into the first sub-level of her palace. They came to a comfortable lounge, and Ana made a pot of caf, using a small facility adjoining it. After a couple of minutes, she had poured them each a cup and they then sat down together on a leather-covered couch.
"Ry, this is where I go to meditate and do my own Force explorations. First, I should let you know that we all were concerned about the Purge and the implications of it during that time, some twenty years ago. Valles and I both knew of our abilities and we agreed to look out for each other. Fortunately, we were successful in that, and Lianna as a whole has not been subjected to the kind of scrutiny that other worlds have been. To the best of my knowledge, there have been no Liannese Jedi, at least not in recent decades. Why that is, I cannot say exactly, other than Valles's grandfather has something to do with it." She took a breath cycle, then continued.
"I'm sharing some deeply personal information with you now, and you should see this as a measure of my trust in you. That said, I cannot promise you that I will not act with some surprise or apprehension over any details you may provide."
Ry gave her a solemn look, and responded. "Yes, my dear Ana. It's only natural for you to feel this way. I've wanted to be completely transparent with you on anything from my past. So let me start at the beginning."
Ana simply nodded, and Ry continued. "I was once a Jedi, but I didn't become a Knight. Instead, I was assigned to the AgriCorps, which turned out to be fortunate for me, because I had plenty of knowledge about plant biology and how things grow. But I was resentful over what I then considered being relegated and it started to turn me to the Dark Side."
She glanced at Ana over this revelation but, to her surprise, the Duchess took it in stride. Seeing this as encouragement of a sort, she continued. "So, when the Empire began, I became a willing adherent to Palpatine and his plans. I even went as far as showing him a way to use agriculture for his plans of Galactic domination and control. I saw this as a way to raise my profile in the new Empire and my Force-sensitivity could be used as a tool, so to speak."
At this point, Ana stopped her. "Ry, this is interesting to me, because, at the same time, my husband and I were wondering how we might fit in under the new regime. Kerred Santhé was on good terms with Palpatine, and it was this relationship that kept Lianna separate from Imperial plans for other parts of the Galaxy. Plus the fact that we were a key maker of armaments and ships – thanks to Kerred and Santhé-Sienar. So any plans from the Ministry of Agriculture did not apply to Lianna and our own farms here in Livornia, which, it now seems, we were rather fortunate."
"That is absolutely correct, Ana, because, with the Emperor's backing, I instituted something called the Imperial Agriculture Program, a scheme to monopolize fertilizer production and thus bring many farming worlds to heel."
"Interesting," Ana scoffed. "Of course, we here on Lianna create our own fertilizer from natural wastes, which we recycle as part of the Water Board's activities. I dare say we would have pushed back hard on your plans."
"And you likely would have won, due to the Emperor's relationship with Valles's family. Of course, this was never mentioned in any capacity that I can recall now. So, anyway, as part of carrying out the program, I brought about environmental destruction to worlds like Yemer – and, I know what you're going to say about this, and believe me, I greatly regret it now."
Ana drank a swig of her caf, finishing the cup, while she considered this information. She then rose and went to get a refill.
"More caf, dear?"
"No, thank you, I'm fine."
Returning to the couch, Ana stared at Ry for a second, then spoke.
"Ry, you do understand that this information could cause you problems here on Lianna. We take our relationship with our environment most seriously. I'm not sure I want to hear the details of what took place on Yemer or other similar worlds, but there are others here that might find it useful, to undermine both of our positions on this planet, and with the Queen in particular."
Ry nodded. "I understand. And I'm willing to do whatever I have to in order to reconcile and repent for my past in this area. I love this world. It's given me the chance to decide how I really feel about my place in the Galaxy and my relationship to the Force. And Valles is well aware of my checkered past and she has seen fit to take it under advisement."
Ana scrunched her lips as she considered this response, then nodded. "All right, dear. She and I both understand how someone can change their outlook, and, I don't know what you've discussed with her over this in the past, but I'm sure you realize how little gets past her. Anything in your past she likely is well aware of and has either decided to overlook it or set it aside for the time being, but a word of warning. She can change rather rapidly when circumstances dictate. It might not hurt for you to have a conversation with her and come clean, so to speak."
Ry nodded. "I appreciate you telling me that, Ana. And I hate to put you in a compromising position. So I should bite the bullet and approach her on this. She always seems to be in a good mood, but I know that's mostly on the surface. The deeper Valles is likely only known to a very few."
"Indeed it is," Ana nodded, with a wink. "When you do have that talk, please bring me up to speed at the soonest."
"You know I will, love. Your opinion means as much to me as anyone's."
The discussion over, Ana and Ry prepared for bedtime, but first they kissed and cuddled together for a few minutes.
Coruscant, Imperial Palace, 0 ABY 8 months, 16 days
The Galactic Emperor sat for a time in his bed chamber, wanting to turn in and get some sleep, but his mind kept wandering, and, for some reason, it arrived at the visit of the one calling herself "Empress Su." About two years earlier, the tall lady in white had suddenly appeared in front of him at the Palace and she had flatly told him that he would be retiring. His "replacement" would soon be arriving, she said, but she gave no exact timeline, so he started thinking about it.
Of course, he had told Valles – on more than one occasion – that she was his chosen successor and no one could be better qualified than the Liannese Queen. But he thought about it and realized:
Valles has never told me she was ready to take my place and that she was more than willing to wait for me to step down and name her as my successor – which I am willing to do … still. Her power is steadily growing – how, exactly? So, what exactly does this lady in white mean, could there be another? That one seemingly can transfer herself anywhere she wants ... but where did she do it that day? And when might she reappear? That one can easily destroy me, but I will give her no reason to do so … thus, if I tell her I have named a successor, will that be satisfactory?
Palpatine continued to mull this over, but the answers weren't coming … then, he remembered. Madam Su had left behind a small white pyramidal object, which he had put aside and then mostly forgot about, but now it was on his mind. He searched through the Force and quickly located it. The signature it emitted was truly unique, something from outside the Galaxy – the one she referred to as "group 17" – and he was now truly curious. A little more concentration, and the Emperor willed the object to come to him. It flew into his right hand and then he started studying it. It seemed totally seamless and nearly perfect. Another test indicated it was made from a substance that he could not penetrate – the only way in was via the Force.
So he concentrated, then reached out. And all at once, the object exploded in size by about ten times. The top cap lifted off, and there was a menu hologram, and her voice could be clearly heard – at least by him. She said:
Welcome, Mister Sheev Palpatine, and welcome to your world. Let's review, shall we?
At this point, a series of pictures and events from his life flashed across the holo-space. These included the day he turned against his family on Naboo, then when he turned against his Sith master Plagueis, when he issued Order 66, his speech in the Galactic Senate declaring the Empire, when he saved Anakin on Mustafar, and finally, when the Death Star was blown up by the rebels. As he watched it, he started to wonder just how all of this information on him was stored – and how it had been compiled. Then the voice came again:
Thus, Mister Palpatine, you now may consider how you want to proceed here, with full recognition that anything you do will be fully visible to me. A word of advice. You do not want me to pay you another visit, as it might not go so well for you as before.
At that, the hologram shrunk and disappeared, leaving him with the small white object still in his hand. As he considered what Su had to say, he grew angry and hurled the object against the wall of his bedchamber. It simply landed softly on the floor, seemingly as impervious to his energy as its creator had been two years prior. Su simply had no concern whatsoever about his views or thoughts on any subject and had issued a clear warning. He could ignore it or heed it. He chose the former, wanting to believe it was nothing but an apparition and that his basic faculties were beginning to deteriorate.
Time to summon Queen Valles again. It may be time to prepare her for the job ahead.
Lianna, Berit's Palace, 0 ABY 9 months, 1 day
Berit receives a visit from Countess Janne, who shares with her some info on Ry's background at IMAg
One night, at Duchess Berit's beautiful estate, Fjellgard, the Duchess was receiving an old friend, Countess Janne (pronounced YA-nuh), who was the ranking noble in the district adjacent to Bergamia (Berit's purview), one called Hordaland – one of the colder parts of the planet. Janne and Berit were old friends, having known each other as teenagers, long before the Clone Wars, and their parts of Lianna were not touched by the Separatists' attack in 21 BBY. They were nibbling on various items from a large platter of small meats and vegetables that were designed to be speared by the sharp sticks that Liannese used to consume their meals. Janne brought her own customized pair, made of sterling silver with pearl handles that were a present from her mother some forty years ago, and was one of her most cherished items. Northern Liannese built much of their culture around food – similar to other parts of the planet – but due to the need to survive long winters, they had developed various methods of preservation.
At this time of year, the people of Bergamia and Hordaland were preparing for the annual Winter's End celebration, a usually joyous time of year when the springtime in the northern latitudes of Lianna was about a month away. The festivities included much fine cooking and many sports that were conducted on icy and snowy terrain. The two noblewomen were good-naturedly sparring over the relative merits of their districts quality of cuisine and sporting prowess.
"So, Berit, my dear, I do hope you are ready this year for a rematch. My skating routine has added a few surprises."
"Well, Janne, we shall see about that, won't we? Do not expect me to simply rest on past performance."
"Of course not … but I also expect your house's smorgasbord to be up to snuff as well, yes?"
"But of course … we have our reputation to uphold, seeing as how the Games are in Bergamia this year."
The two ladies shared a happy laugh together, Janne's eyes beaming with delight as she considered Berit a very close confidant and longtime friend. After Janne had been properly received at Fjellgard, Berit's servants had seen to her luggage and had shown her into a guest suite. A few minutes later, Janne had changed into a richly detailed evening gown and robe of a deep forest green color, with her dark hair elegantly tied into a long braid that descended down her back. Janne was about fifty years of age, and had lived her entire life on Lianna. She had a pleasing manner and a rosy-cheeked smile, and a tendency to flutter her long lashes when she spoke. Berit loved her almost like a sister and they shared many opinions and attitudes.
They often spent time at each other's noble estates. Berit had five residences in Bergamia and of course, the obligatory estate in the City and an apartment in a tower not far from the Queen's urban palace. Janne had similar palaces in Hordaland and the two would entertain each other, along with other like-minded nobles from districts north of Lianna City. The district capitals of each were also important, as the elected governors and the representatives in the Liannese Legislature lived there, and, as politicians were expected to do on the planet, they both sought the favor of Berit and Janne when election time came around. The two ladies would often hold debate contests at their homes in the capitals so that candidates could make their best impressions on them. Both Berit and Janne took their role quite seriously and were more than simply titular leaders of their districts.
As she joined Berit for a pre-dinner appetizer in a sitting room that overlooked the snowy slopes of nearby mountains and also a frozen lake, Janne sighed contentedly as Berit invited her to sit together on a sumptuous couch that faced the large window. A bord of small treats awaited them, and the two munched happily.
"Berit, darling, I know that at this time of year, I probably should not bring up political topics but I just had to pass some details along to you."
The Duchess smiled, fully knowing that Janne liked few things better than "passing along" this and that, so that they could compare notes together. She nodded and gave a slight smirk. "Oh … by all means …"
"Well, I don't suppose you are familiar with Ana's new pet …"
"Whatever could you be referring to," Berit chuckled, then winked.
"It appears she has quite the sordid past … and, I suppose, being from Mandalore, of all places, we shouldn't be surprised."
"Mandalore … yes. A slightly uncouth place indeed, though Satine did her best to make it livable. I guess it's more or less been trashed nowadays. A pity …"
"Well, it's not so much that … it seems our friend the Countess was once heading up the Imperial Ministry of Agriculture."
Berit stopped to consider this for a second. "That might have something to do with what Ana sees in her. Yes, it would make sense as our dear Duchess is quite a 'lady of the soil' so to speak."
Janne laughed, but then quickly added, "don't take this the wrong way … Livornia has such wonderful delights from their orchards and groves, and no one has better wines and spirits in all of Lianna."
"And how rich little Ana is …" Berit muttered, somewhat disdainfully. "But we would be most foolish to ever underestimate her, given her ties to Valles … So, what about the Countess?"
"I have learned that her tenure at I-Mag was more than a little … concerning. The word is that they had a program in place to strongarm various worlds into cooperation and were seeking to make them dependent on dwindling fertilizer supplies. They sprayed large amounts of toxic chemicals to 'cleanse' those worlds, essentially making them dependent on crops that could grow in the treated soils, using the required 'best practices.' And any who opposed this were bludgeoned into submission."
Berit gasped. "Does the Queen realize this? We cannot in good conscience expect Her Majesty to tolerate such things and "Countess" Kyver should be stripped of her position …"
Janne nodded, with a big grin crossing her countenance. "Are you thinking what I am?"
"Indeed, my dear … Ana will have some explaining to do." Berit took a deep breath and exhaled, then reached for a bite from the tasty spread on the nearby table. "But, Janne, how did you come by this information? It's potentially quite scandalous."
"Ha ha ha …" her friend chuckled, then shrugged her shoulders in a smug sense of self-satisfaction. "I have a wonderful network of contacts in the City. You know I'll always look out for you, dear."
The two ladies continued to munch and gossip, then Janne brought up another topic.
"So how does it progress with the Togruta?"
"Quite well, Master Ti is a very wise and thoughtful lady. There is something about her that I've never felt from anyone else before. Obviously, she and Valles share many things together."
"And do you share them, as well?"
"Only to a point. I am, unfortunately, not at all gifted in 'the force', as they refer to it. But Valles sure is, and Shaak Ti is as well, and they are making big plans."
Janne smiled. "And time will tell what those are. Berit, dear, have you perhaps been included? You had mentioned earlier that Valles had placed you in the role of seeing to Master Ti's needs whenever she is on Lianna. Is that still the case?"
"It is. And Shaak and I get on marvelously. She's so polite, and quite elegant, as most of her people are. I have such respect for Togruta as a culture, even though they have a rather – shall we say – primitive background, and not all that long ago. But they make some rather tasty food on Shili, I'm told. Someday I want to go there and try it myself."
"Ahhhh, yes," Janne sighed contentedly. "And with that, I guess it will soon be time for dinner. We've got a full slate of folks to greet and seat." She winked, then laughed, gently. "And you, my dear, will meet me on the ice tomorrow. I'm eager to see what you've learned."
"And so you shall …" Berit chuckled. She then stood and the two of them strolled, arm in arm, over to the lift and headed off for their social duties.
Felucia, Shaak's home, 0 ABY 9 months, 15 days, 22 hours
Late one night on Felucia, Shaak summoned Ahsoka to her home. When her adoptive daughter arrived, Shaak first apologized for the late hour, but Ahsoka told her she didn't mind. Tri'ku, her fiancée, had returned to his home world of Almania for a couple of days, and Ahsoka was happy to spend time with her mother. The younger Togruta had changed into a lovely blue gown that complimented her lekku nicely, and when Shaak greeted her at the door of her home, the two embraced warmly. As Ahsoka took her seat facing her mother, Shaak asked:
"So how are things with you, dear? Let's take this time to discuss whatever you want."
"I appreciate that, Mother. And let me first start by saying that I love you very much and you truly have become a mother to me over these past couple of years. But I'm also excited now, because the two people that gave birth to me have been found on Shili and I'm looking forward to meeting them soon and becoming reacquainted with my Tano heritage."
Shaak nodded, then smiled, and her eyes became a serene blue.
"Yes, Frehya had mentioned that to me the other day. I'm very happy for you. It's important to know where you come from in this universe. I do hope they are in at least reasonably good health."
"That's the thing …" Ahsoka sighed. "I'm not sure exactly what shape they are in. My brother – whom they also found – said they are hospitalized and under long-term care in Corvala."
"Well, maybe I can help with that. After you meet with them, please come to me and let me know how they are doing."
"Thank you, Mother. I will certainly do that."
"A beverage, my child?"
"Yes, please. A warm tea would be nice."
After Shaak had brewed the tea, then handed a cup of it to Ahsoka, she sat again and glanced across to her.
"So, my child. I want to apologize for not being more open with you about the plan .. and how I shall become Empress."
"Yes," Ahsoka nodded. "I would like to know more. How exactly …"
At this point, her voice trailed off and she gazed across to Shaak, who answered.
"Dear, you are no doubt familiar with all of the holocron study, and I hope that you have been doing some of it yourself, as Maris has."
"I must admit, Mother, I've been a bit derelict in this. But I need to get on it, I know that. So … is there any place you might want me to pay particular attention to?"
"Indeed, dear. I'm going to let you borrow holocron 33. You may recall …about six months ago, I showed you how to direct raw energy."
"Oh, yes," Ahsoka said softly in response. "You simply made things catch fire, and then extinguished it. It was quite impressive. Who else can do that?"
Shaak chuckled. "You can do it. You just haven't learned how. This is a power that a Master of your capability should have in her repertoire. But, more than that. There is a more advanced usage of the Force that is rather controversial, yet the ancient Jedi knew this power."
"Really … I'm listening, Mother."
Shaak gave her a blank stare for a couple of seconds, apparently taking a reading of Ahsoka's understanding and receptiveness. Satisfied with the results, she then spoke.
"This is the power of Severance. It is the ability to cut someone off from the Force. Needless to say, this is a dangerous power. About two weeks ago, I demonstrated it to Anakin, but he will not have this power."
"Will I?"
"In due time, my dear. For the time being, I want you to study holocron number 33 and become more familiar with the powers demonstrated on it. This holocron can only be opened by someone who has reached the second degree of Master of the Order – which, of course, you have."
"Ah, yes. I was wondering what that might involve. Mother, I am grateful for your faith in me, and I shall take these new responsibilities seriously. Is this part of the roles I will play as Crown Princess of the Empire?"
"It is, but more than that, it is part of your evolution. When I become Empress – which is really a matter of timing now – I will still retain the Grand Master title in the Order, but you are my second in command, and I am considering how you will be styled and your fuller responsibilities. Master Yoda has spoken highly of you in the past, and I will be visiting with him in a few weeks."
Ahsoka nodded, and thought about this carefully. "Ah. And how does he feel about you becoming the Empress?"
"He approves, and understands that Palpatine – Darth Sidious – must be defeated if the Dark Side of the Force is to be kept at bay in the Galaxy. I'm not going to be a ceremonial ruler, I intend to shape this Galaxy in ways that it should have always been … and you, my dear, are going to help me."
"Yes, of course, but might I ask you something?"
"Absolutely, it is why you are here with me tonight."
"Mother, what about Valles? I'm almost certain that she has Force ability. Are you in agreement?"
"Yes, I am. But she also believes that I am unaware of her power. My child, we must be cautious when it comes to Valles. She is very ambitious, but she says all the right things, as she is rather clever and calculating."
"But I do like her, Mother. She seems very kind and good-hearted."
"Oh, that she does indeed. And the fact is, we need her. Her organizational mind is as good as anyone I've ever met. No one else can pull the Imperial Administration together the way I want it to be. We have talked about this already. Valles is the uncrowned Queen of Lianna now, and she has also taken over many nearby worlds on the Outer Rim, collecting huge amounts of tribute from all of them – trillions of credits per day, I believe."
"And she's told you about all of this?"
Shaak nodded and chuckled, while looking fondly at Ahsoka. "All of it. You see, she needs me – and us – as much as I need her."
"Ah," Ahsoka nodded, then laughed softly. "I think I'm getting it, now. So … what do you need from me – other than my studies of holocron 33 and all?"
"Your understanding, my child, and all of what we have discussed here is strictly between us. Do not include your husband-to-be, nor Anakin, and certainly not Valles herself. The Queen and I are going to be a very powerful team, but we have to keep an eye on her. I'm counting on you to do that, and, at the same time, she must be unaware of your role here."
"Yes, Mother. I fully understand."
"Good. Now, one more thing. You are going to work with the Liannese Duchess, Ana Capra, and her assistant, Countess Kyver, on the changes we are making to Felucia. These include some development and the creation of an urban area about twenty kilometres from the Order's facilities, as well as the environmental changes to be done to the planet's atmosphere. Countess Kyver is well-versed in the subjects. You also will work with her on the overhaul of Malachor into Avalonia."
Ahsoka suddenly realized something. "Wait a second … Kyver? By any chance, is this Ry Kyver, the onetime Minister of Agriculture for Palpatine?"
"Yes. But she's been living on Lianna for over a decade and is one of Valles's most trusted subordinates."
"Ah ha!" Ahsoka said loudly, as she snapped her head forward. "This should be interesting. Mother, you know she is Force-adept, right?"
Shaak chuckled. "I do, my child. As is Duchess Ana. But neither one of them is on your level, so there is no need for concern."
"Oh, I'm good. But this should be interesting. Mother, I once worked with her a long time ago, as it turns out. But somehow I lost track of her and I was getting closer to Barriss."
"Was this involving Varda, by any chance?"
"It was. And she later told me that she was moving to Felucia to work with you and Maris. She was quite fond of Maris, as I have become myself. I thought it was a great opportunity for her, and she'd told me you helped to heal her arthritic hip."
"I did indeed," Shaak chuckled. "We became close … and … I'm looking forward to working with her again."
The Grand Master then stood, and Ahsoka joined her as they joined hands and began an energy exchange. After about one minute, they released each other.
Shaak then asked, "Are we clear, my child?"
"We are," Ahsoka replied. "Crystal."
Nothing more needed to be said.
To be continued …
