A/N: I blame the Rollisi gc for this. All that talk about a Rollisi baby got me thinking, and here we are. I know this collection is supposed to be scenes from S23, but this is set in S24.
Hope you like it! And remember: Reviews are life.
Are You Ok, Baby?
"You got eyes on him?" Olivia mutters into the hidden mic on her wrist while holding the cup of coffee to her lips, eyes trained on the blond sitting across the room.
"Yup." Amanda responds subtly, shifting a little on the barstool. "Pretty sure he's got eyes on me too."
"Good, that's what we want."
Briefly, Olivia wonders if she's enjoying this a bit too much. Maybe it's because it's been ages since she had the opportunity to flex her undercover muscles, or maybe it's watching Amanda in action that makes this all a little entertaining. Either way, the break from her office and all the paperwork feels like a godsend right now, even with their very serious task at hand.
"Damnit, I think some other blonde caught his attention."
"You should smile more." The captain jokes, eyeing the detective to catch her reaction.
"Screw you." Amanda shoots back through a tight smile, forcing Olivia to stifle a laugh. But a short moment later her smirk falters when she notices how the detective's eyes narrow, clearly focused on something happening on the other side of the room.
"Wait, it's working. He's coming over."
Olivia gives the crowded bar a glance until her eyes find their mark, following him closely as he moves towards the blonde.
"Fin, you guys all set outside?" She mumbles, waiting for the sergeant's response.
"Ready when you are, cap."
"Waiting for someone?" The man asks, gesturing towards the chair next to her.
"Mhm." Amanda nods, flashing a bright smile. "You."
"Forward." He grins, sounding impressed. "I like that."
She reaches out to run a hand down his arm, her move followed by a wink. "You do, huh?"
"Can I buy you a drink?"
"I don't know if another drink is what I need." Amanda shoots back, crossing her legs.
Girl sure can flirt, Olivia thinks as she keeps listening to their conversation, forcing herself to keep a straight face when the detective starts talking about her job as a psychology professor. Amanda sounds so convincing, it makes the captain wonder why she's not a professional actress.
"It's go time." She instructs through the mic a while later, when Amanda leans in to whisper something inaudible in the man's ear, giving her captain a wink over his shoulder.
Casually, Olivia collects her things, waiting a couple of seconds before moving to exit the bar, making sure that her detective and their target are in fact getting ready to leave. Once outside, she pretends to fumble around in her purse just as Amanda walks through the door, hand in hand with the tall stranger.
Subtly, she watches as they move towards the alley, for a moment forgetting that the blonde is completely sober with the way she giggles and stumbles slightly next to their suspect.
She hates that she can't follow them into the dark and confined area. But if they want to catch this guy, they need something solid. So she waits.
Amanda fakes a laugh as the man spins them around, pressing her back against the wall. She tilts her head just in time so that his lips crashes against her neck instead of her mouth. Determined to avoid kissing this creep. Besides, her lips are reserved for one man, and one man only.
"Wait, slow down." She says when his hands start to roam, now faking a whimper. "I don't think-"
"Don't tell me you changed your mind, sweetheart." He chuckles against her skin, making her roll her eyes and clench her jaw in disgust.
"I'm just feeling a little dizzy. Can you please stop?" Amanda uses her hands on his shoulders to try and push him away, but in the blink of an eye, he has a knife to her throat.
"Do what I say and no one gets hurt."
"Ok, ok." Amanda breathes out quickly, adrenaline high, but not from fear. She knows her squad is right around the corner. And that they'll be there in three, two, one-
"Police! Drop the knife!"
It happens so fast that she has absolutely no time to prepare. One second she's staring into his dark eyes, widened from what looks like both surprise and confusion, and the next she's on the ground while Fin is on top of their suspect. He's yelling something, but she can't make out the words because she's suddenly overcome with panic and dread.
"Amanda." She recognizes Olivia's voice as she tries to lift herself up while sucking in air, the alley spinning violently around her. "Amanda, are you ok?" The captain kneels down next to her, supporting her enough so she can sit up and lean her back against the cold brick wall.
"I…" Amanda cradles her stomach where he had just planted his knee right before their sergeant grabbed and pulled him away. "I don't know." There's a faint, throbbing pain in her belly but it's not the physical pain that causes her tears to spill.
"Talk to me, Rollins."
"I'm-" She watches as Fin gets their perp up on his feet, guiding him towards the police car. And then her eyes meet Olivia's. "Liv, I'm pregnant."
For some reason she expects to be reprimanded. For her captain to say something about how she should've told her, how she shouldn't have said yes to this stint when she knew it could potentially turn into a dangerous situation.
But Olivia does neither.
Instead, she hastily finds her phone, eyes locked to Amanda's as she orders a bus to their location.
"Don't move, ok? The ambulance will be here in a few minutes."
"I'm sorry." Amanda says through her tears. "I should've told you."
"Don't worry about that." The brunette cups her cheek, giving her a reassuring smile in the process. "You'll be fine."
"What's going on?" Fin asks when he returns, confused by the sight of the two women still seated on the ground. "You ok, Rollins?"
Olivia turns from the sergeant to Amanda to look at her, trying to read her eyes and find a way for them to explain the situation. But with a resigned and trembling sigh, the blonde detective lifts her head. "I'm pregnant, Fin."
His surprised expression quickly turns to anger as he looks over his shoulder, to where the man is still seated inside the car. "And he goddamn kneed you in the stomach?" Fin more or less yells, already moving towards the vehicle.
"Sergeant! Don't!" The brunette calls out with a firm voice, before turning back to Amanda. "Ambulance should be here any minute. I'll ride with you, ok?"
The detective nods, trying to control her tears, and her hammering heart.
Heart.
"Carisi." She whispers, guilt rushing through her. She had promised him repeatedly that she wouldn't take any risks, that she, and the baby, would be safe. And he had still absolutely hated the idea of her going undercover like this.
"Carisi, do I really need to remind you that I've been pregnant two times? While working?"
"And I didn't have a say then." He argues while getting up from behind his desk to move towards her. "We weren't together."
"Didn't stop you from coddling me." Amanda mumbles, hands running down his chest when he's close enough for her to touch him.
"Hey, can you blame me?" The ADA uses his hand to lift her chin, looking at her with a mix of love and frustration.
"I'll be fine. I promise." She says as she wraps her arms around him. "It's a quick UC. Couple of hours, and it's done."
Resigned, he nods. "Call me the minute it's over."
"I will." The detective smiles, ending their little quarrel with a soft kiss.
"I'll call Carisi." Fin mumbles while reaching for his phone, glaring at the car currently driving away with the man he just arrested. "Liv, text me when you know which hospital you're going to."
Her hands keep fidgeting, playing with the hem of the blanket the nurse had placed over her while letting her know that the doctor would come and see her in a few minutes. Even though she knows the other woman is trying to stay calm, there is worry in Olivia's eyes and it does nothing to lessen the uneasiness in her chest.
"When did you find out?" The brunette finally asks, breaking the heavy silence that has lingered in the room since the nurse left them alone.
"Like three weeks ago?" She admits. "I didn't want to tell you before the twelve week mark, since it's kind of a high risk pregnancy." When she notices the way Olivia's eyebrows furrow in confusion, she quickly adds "because of my age, not because something's wrong."
The captain nods slowly as she takes a deep breath. And then her lips curl into a crooked smile. "Three weeks and Carisi didn't spill the secret?"
For the first time since leaving the bar, a genuine laugh escapes her. "Yeah, I'm surprised, too."
"How did you tell him?"
The question makes her bite down on her lip, feeling a little embarrassed by the corny way she had told her husband. "Well… I bought shirts for the girls and asked if he could get them dressed for daycare while I made their lunch. Jesse's said "world's greatest big sister" and Billie's just said "same".
"That's so adorable." Olivia grins, holding a hand over her chest. "Did he cry?"
"Not at first. For an ADA he's surprisingly slow, at least in the mornings." Amanda chuckles. "But when I asked if he noticed their new shirts? Yeah, he cried."
"I didn't think you wanted more kids?"
"I didn't think so either, and he told me that he was perfectly happy with just me and the girls. That he loves them as his own. But… I couldn't stop thinking about it. And it's not like I have the luxury of waiting a few years to think about it. I'm not thirty anymore." She shrugs before gesturing towards her stomach. "So here we are."
But just as her eyes land on her blanket covered belly, she realizes that there might not be a baby anymore. And just like that, the tears are back. "Liv…" She says. "I really need things to be ok."
Olivia quickly moves from her chair to the side of the bed then, grabbing Amanda's hand. "You'll be fine." She says, both of them knowing full well that she can't promise anything. "And whatever happens, I'll be here. And Carisi is on his way. You're not alone, ok?"
The blonde gives her a sad smile just as a knock on the door makes her look away.
"Amanda Rollins?"
"That's me." She confirms with a nod while wiping her tears away.
"You had an accident tonight, huh?" He asks, eyes moving from her to the tablet in his hands.
"Guess you can say that." She waits for him to say something about taking risks like this while pregnant, or for him to scold her about not taking better care of her baby. Feeling a sense of gratitude when he doesn't mention it at all.
"Are you in any pain right now?"
"Not really."
"Amanda." Olivia chimes in, giving her hand a squeeze. "Be honest."
"Ok, a little." She admits. "But it feels pretty superficial."
"Let's take a look."
From the moment he places the device on her bare stomach, it feels like time slows down. She wants to look at the screen but instead her eyes are glued to where her hand is cradled in Olivia's. And for a long time, it feels like her heart is about to hammer its way through her chest.
She waits, and waits. And waits. Ready to break down crying just as the sound of the doctor's voice makes her lift her head.
"There." He says, nodding towards the screen, smile on his face. "There's your baby."
"Where?" Amanda squints. It's not like she hasn't done this before, but not with a seven week old fetus.
"Right-" He moves the screen a bit closer while pointing at something that doesn't look like much more than a grey spot. "There."
"Oh my god." Olivia whispers, clearly awestruck. "That's your baby."
"That's my baby." The blonde responds, feeling that familiar rush of serotonin that she got the first time she did this while pregnant with her two daughters.
"And everything looks absolutely perfect. We'll do some blood work too, before we let you go home. But there's no reason for you to worry. Just… take it easy for a couple of days. No work."
"I'm sorry." Amanda mumbles when she turns to look at her captain. "We're already understaffed."
"Stop." Olivia says, her voice stern. "I am not letting you apologize for being pregnant."
"But-"
"No buts. You're gonna take a couple of days, and we'll figure things out over the weekend. Focus on you." The brunette smiles, eyes a little glossy as she nods towards the screen. "And your baby."
She can't argue with that, so she says nothing, eyes trained on that grey spot while the doctor gently wipes away the gel on her skin. "I'll have a nurse come in here to take care of the blood work, and you'll be able to go home in a few hours."
Amanda finally lets out a sigh of relief then. "Thank you."
Not more than a minute after the doctor closes the door behind him, it's practically slammed open by a very pale looking ADA, forcing both women to look away from the screen they've been staring at since the doctor left.
"Babe." Carisi says, his voice shaky as he rushes towards the hospital bed.
"I'm fine." Amanda reassures him, followed by a whispered "we're fine" while her hand caresses her stomach.
"You sure?"
"Yes." Amanda half laughs, half cries. "I'm sure."
Olivia gives him a smile while lifting herself up from the bed. "Call me when you get home, ok?"
The detective responds with a nod. "Thank you for coming with me."
"Yes, thank you, Liv." He adds. "For coming with, and staying."
"Of course."
As soon as they're alone, Carisi leans down to kiss her forehead. "I was so worried." He whispers against her skin.
"I'm sorry." Amanda responds, eyes closed. "I know you didn't want me to do this."
"Don't apologize." He says, pulling back to sit on the side of the bed. "Your job is important. I know that."
"Yes, but so is this." She looks down, reaching for his hand to place it on her belly. "I'll be more careful."
He doesn't say anything, but the kiss that follow tells her everything she needs to know. He trusts her, and there's no blame to be placed anywhere.
"Wanna meet your baby?" She grins when he breaks the kiss, nodding to the screen behind him.
He turns quickly, making her laugh when he immediately squints his eyes like she had done just a moment ago. "That's… That's our baby?" He asks, sounding a little dumbfounded.
"That's it."
"It looks just like me."
"Yup." She laughs again. "Spitting image."
She watches him, takes in his eyes that are just so filled with pride it makes her want to cry again. But she doesn't get that far because a second later his lips are back on hers. And finally, after what feels like an eternity, she feels her body relax.
"I love you." Amanda mumbles against his lips.
"I love you, too. So much." He scoots back a little before lowering his head, kissing her stomach. "And I love you. More than you'll ever know."
