Rolling over in the middle of the night, Sheldon sleepily reached for his wife, only to find Amy's side of the bed empty. He could see the ensuite bathroom was empty; he sat on the side of the bed and slid his feet into his slippers. Exiting the bedroom, he stopped outside Levi and Theo's room, not finding her with them. Continuing his search, he made his way downstairs and saw a light coming from the living room. "What are you doing down here? Come back to bed."
"Oh, um, I couldn't sleep," Amy looked up from the notepad in her lap.
Sheldon joined her on the couch, noticing the notepad as he settled, "What are you working on?"
"I thought since we found out the babies are both girls, maybe we could look at names. I'd love to be able to tell your mom the names when we see her next week since we had to tell her I was pregnant over the phone."
"There's only one name on here?" He glanced at the paper. "You know we'll need to come up with two names."
Amy watched Sheldon's face as he studied the lone name on her paper. "If you don't like that name and don't want to use it, I completely understand. We can wait to pick names. We still have months before the babies get here."
"No, it's perfect." Amy smiled at her husband's acceptance of her suggestion. "We don't leave for a few days. Let's take some time to look at names and find another one we really like. But now, let's go back to bed. I don't like waking up and my girls aren't next to me," Sheldon placed his hand on Amy's growing stomach.
Nine days after Sheldon woke up alone, he was back in Texas, standing in front of Missy's burial site. He had sent Levi and Theo back to the car with Mary and Amy, taking a few minutes to talk to his sister alone. "I know Amy told you at Christmas she's pregnant. We're having twins. We just found out it is two girls. No clue if they're identical or not, I'm hoping they're fraternal so we can tell them apart," he glanced over his shoulder at the car parked along the road winding through the cemetery.
"We're going to tell mom they're both girls at dinner, as well as the names. We're naming one of them Melissa. It was Amy's idea. I thought you'd like that. We aren't going to call her Missy, though. No one can ever replace you. Besides, I don't think the world could handle another Missy Cooper, I know I can't."
Sheldon was silent as he stared at his sister's name on the ground in front of him. "Um, the boys are calling us mom and dad now. Levi only started doing it all the time at Christmas after he asked if we could be his mom and dad forever. We told him that nothing is official yet and Ricky can still change his mind, but they are probably never going to live with Ricky and they'll be with us forever."
"Fourteen months and three days. I've missed you every single one of those days, we all have," he quietly squeaked out. "I'm so grateful you chose to trust me and Amy with Levi and Theo. I was terrified at first I was going to do something wrong, but none of us seem any worse for the wear, so I must not be screwing up too badly," Sheldon paused again, glancing at the car, noticing Amy was making her way back to him while everyone else waited in the car. "It looks like they're ready to leave, so I'd better get going. Happy birthday, Missy. We miss you."
Meeting his wife halfway back to the car, their hands quickly found one another. "You okay?" she asked, noticing his eyes appeared wet.
"Yeah," he shrugged his shoulders, not very sure of his response. "Missy would be so excited about the babies. It sucks that she's not going to meet them. I told her we're naming one of them Melissa."
Amy froze in her tracks, pulling Sheldon to stop alongside her a few yards from the car. "Hey, if you're having second thoughts about the names, we can wait to tell your mom. We don't have to rush this. Let's take more time to look at other names and if we keep coming back to Melissa, then we know it's the right name."
Sheldon shook his head, "No. I don't want to pick a different name. I love the names we chose. I don't remember feeling this way on our birthday last year. It's not fair that Missy isn't here and that she doesn't get to see her children grow up, while we're moving on with our lives."
"I know. It sucks, but she's still with them and you," Amy got quiet, starting to walk again. "I love you and I am so proud of you."
"I love you, too."
Levi carried most of the conversation throughout dinner, sharing stories from school and Cub Scouts with Mary and Meemaw. Theo would chime in enthusiastically from time to time, leaving Amy and Sheldon quiet for most of the meal. "How are the babies?" enquired Meemaw, noticing the boys had Mary's attention.
"Good," Amy swallowed the drink she'd just taken, nodding at Sheldon.
"We actually were planning on sharing some news about the twins tonight," he continued, prompting Mary to turn her attention to her son and daughter-in-law. "We haven't told anyone yet, but we had a doctor's appointment last week and got to see the babies." Sheldon leaned over and passed his phone to Mary, showing off an ultrasound photo.
Studying the image, Mary cooed, sharing it with Meemaw. "Look at them. They're getting so big, but it's still a long time until they're here. Did you find out if they're boys or girls? I didn't know what I was having with Georgie or with you and Missy. Missy couldn't wait to find out what she was having when she was pregnant."
Grinning, Amy nodded, "We know what we're having and we haven't told anyone, not even the boys or Penny and Leonard."
"We also picked the names," Sheldon chimed in. "Both of the babies are girls," he paused for his mother to express her excitement at getting two granddaughters. "And they're going to be named Sadie and Melissa."
Mary gasped, bringing her hands to cover her mouth. "You're naming one of the babies Missy?"
"No, we're naming her Melissa," he corrected. "I don't want to call her Missy. I don't think the world is ready for another Missy Cooper right now."
Having listened to the exchange between his uncle and grandmother, Theo questioned, "Lissa?"
"Yeah, one of the babies is going to be named Melissa. That was your mommy's name," Amy leaned over, picking up a napkin to wipe the two-year-old's face. Turning her attention to her older nephew, she asked, "The babies are both girls, Levi. What do you think about that?"
"I like their names."
"Well, I love their names. I hope I'm able to make the trip to California to see them after they're born. I might be old, but it's easier for me to travel than for you to bring two babies to see me," Meemaw commented.
"We can make the trip together, mom," suggested Mary. "We'll figure that out when it gets closer, though."
