Moon, Sun, and Snow
Jack
Three hundred years, I tell myself, three hundred years of being isolated. Alone in the shadows. Only today, I wished things were kept that way.
My name is Jack Frost, Guardian of Winter. Unfortunately, I have no backstory, as my first memory is being pulled out of a lake on a snowy night, only to be told by the moon what my name was and then leave me all on my own. I'd be lying to myself if I said I don't hold grudges, but I hated him and myself for quite a couple of years, especially after I discovered that no one was able to see me unless I believed in.
Granted, I did make a friend, or more like he wouldn't stop pestering me until I got used to his presence. His name is Nick St. North, Santa Claus as you might all know him as. I stay at his place from time as he's usually never there though because he's too busy with Christmas stuff. I don't mind if I'm being honest as long as I get to stay at the workshop.
Although it wasn't until last week that I finally saw him stressed.
I was walking into his office as I would normally do "Hey so have you considered getting some other kind of security? Because your yetis are sure becoming 'nicer' every time I drop by" I then noticed there was something off, "You alright Nick?"
"Jack, I've been wanting to talk to you. Sit." He signaled me, sitting back in his chair
It was the first time I'd ever seen him that way, so I didn't protest.
"It's Pitch, Pitch Black. He's come back and he's stronger than ever."
I laughed "The bogeyman? He's harmless, I've encountered him around two times, not directly, he does enjoy lingering in the shadows"
"Which is why he's a danger to you, Jack" Nick blurted
"Hold up," I shook my head "Me?"
"Pitch is after you Jack and others like you,"
I lean towards him, "Others like me? What are you talking about?"
"You see Jack, I am a guardian of childhood, I am only meant for the greater good of children, Christmas to be exact. Kinda how Aster is meant for Easter, and Tooth for the children who lose their teeth." North began, he was kind of starting to worry me "Now you, you're different, you are a guardian meant for the good of this world. Handpicked to serve and protect us all. You hold a great power which not many have. Which is why Pitch is after you, I am certain the times you saw him wasn't just a coincidence"
"So you're telling me that Pitch Black, the man who hasn't shown his face in years aside from the small appearances, is after me. Not just that but there are more people like me."
"Indeed,"
"Why? Why is he after me?"
He then stood up and headed towards the door
"Unfortunately that was all I was told," Nick then stopped by a wooden toy castle he built "You need to go see him,"
My anxiety started to kick in, I hate meeting new people "See who?"
The old man held the door open for me proudly "An old friend of mine, he lives in Arendelle."
"Arendelle? That's like centuries back from today," I complained
"You complain too much Jackson. You're gonna have to trust him,"
Arendelle, haven't been there in a hundred years ever since my powers have gotten better and I've been able to spend winters from a distance. I'll admit it's nice to be back.
The place Nick was talking about was very well hidden, common for anything of this sort since magic in this kingdom is very taboo. I'm even surprised they were able to ally with Corona since they're so magic-based, even at times depending on it for the safety of their kingdom.
I finally got to the location, and not to my surprise, it was empty. I was pretty annoyed if I'm being honest, wasn't my presence expected?
Suddenly I hear rumbling. I pulled my staff closer to me as I wasn't aware of what was coming. A bunch of rocks soon then rolled towards me and when they stopped they formed into creatures, trolls to be exact. They soon began to whisper to one another "Jack Frost" "the first to arrive" "he sure is handsome"
"Jack Frost," a male voice spoke, I look down and it was who it seemed like their leader "I am Pabbie the leader of the trolls and Valley of the Living Rock, I'm glad to finally see you"
"Uh, I was um, sent here by Nickolas," I spoke a bit nervous, feeling all the attention on me "He gave me a brief explanation of why I'm here, but I'm sure there's more to it,"
"Yes, you know about Kozmotis, or Pitch to be exact," Pabbie began "He's starting to become a great threat, sending nightmares to other guardians as a warning of his arrival"
"What is he after exactly?"
"Your powers, and immortality" the old troll confessed "They're one of life's greatest gifts,"
Greatest gifts….it all honestly feels like a punishment
Pabbie then gave me a book and pointed the page "Years ago Jack, you used to be someone else, a past life that was taken from you" I looked at him oddly but he continued "You and others, although this time he's gonna have to work harder."
I simply nodded, kind of in shock, but he kept kept going
"I have a simple task for you, there's a family of four living at the time you're from, Eugene and Elsa, along with their two children"
"Eugene? Elsa? As in—"
"The royal couple? Yes." He interrupted "Gifted with the powers of fire and ice. Elsa's are similar to yours except she doesn't use a staff or fly,"
"I want you to go, find them, and bring them here," Pabbie then warned me "They're going to be reluctant, trust me. You're gonna have to convince them to come"
"Easy task you say," I laughed
He laughed along "It gets easier as it goes"
It was around two hours later, I had left Trollville after some autographs and goodbye kisses and went off. Grand Pabbie suggested not going for the direct approach as I'd be turned away immediately, so I decided to go for the kids. They're only a year younger than me, so I thought it wouldn't be hard.
I finally got to my time and the city they were located in. Their house was in a fancy secluded area pretty far from the actual city, which seems fitting for people like them. I decided to get some inside details by looking through the window. There they were, Eugene and Elsa sitting at the table, while their children were at the couch watching TV. I'll admit they're all extremely good looking, ethereal to be exact, although for creatures like us it's a given. Maybe this won't be so difficult after all."
Hiccup
I've always been a firm believer in magical beings, fairies, trolls, dragons. Although never did I once expect to be one of them.
The day had already started off to begin with when I woke up from a nightmare. I was in a dark cave trying to run away from something, while a male voice mocked me. It wasn't the cave filled darkness what scared me, it was the sense of loneliness that I felt. As if it were real.
I woke up abruptly and realized I was sweating immensely when I stood up. I stood up from my bed feeling the cold wind hit me.
"Hiccup?"
I looked beside me and there was my sister, Rapunzel who was painting by the window. She looked at me with great concern.
"Are you okay?" She stood up and walked towards me
I was still trying to get my consciousness, but I at least managed to word out
"Yeah, yeah I'm okay," I stared off into space but snapped out of it "Bad dream,"
"You woke up so abruptly"
"I'm okay," I assured her, I got up from my bed "What time is it?"
Rapunzel then started to laugh "Almost eleven, we would have woken you for breakfast but you slept late last night. Again."
I looked at my project on the table, a pair of wings I've been working on "It was a good reason this time, I made so much progress," I walked to my desk as she followed behind me to look at it
These pair of wings were made for me to fly, like a bird of some sort. Not sure what number of prototype I'm in since the others broke from me trying (got a lot of scoldings) which I'm surprised that I'm still here in once piece since I did take some hard hits trying.
"I just need to fix a couple of things here and there then I'll be ready to fly again"
A sigh was then heard, we turned back and it was our mother at the door.
"Hiccup,"
"I know, the wings are dangerous and I should stop testing them in high altitudes"
She walked in shaking her head while laughing "Because we don't want any more injuries. I know you well and you're going to do anything for them to work"
"I'll be safe, trust me. I won't lose another leg" I pointed to my prosthetic
"That's what you said last time," Mom looked at me with doubt "And then you crashed into a tree,"
"I mean it this time," I said as I went out the door
I decided to go to the bathroom to throw some water on my face. Get the nightmare out of my mind and move on with my day. I looked at myself in the mirror and said.
"Today, is going to be great"
I went downstairs, made myself breakfast and ate. I hadn't seen Dad just yet, so he must've been in his study. It didn't really cross my mind to pay him a visit as he usually comes out around one in the afternoon. I'd see him by then.
I am homeschooled, so is Rapunzel. Which kind of took away the ability from us to socialize with others, mostly me as Punz takes painting classes at a program nearby so I assume she takes her dose of socializing there. I prefer working alone, I've always been that way since I was a child as I was usually being made fun of for my small build. I think Rapunzel and my parents are probably the only people I talk to voluntarily. Others would have to be the business men that my dad talks to and their sons but I always refrain from going to those parties. He tells me it's practice for the future, but the future isn't coming anytime soon so I'd like to keep things the way they are.
"Hiccup,"
Speaking of….
"Hi dad, you're out early," I turned to him
He passed by me, he was quite happy "Just came for some water." I stayed quiet knowing what was coming "Are you going to be busy late in the afternoon? I'd like to show you something"
"I'll be done with my project by then,"
"Alright see you then" he ruffled my my hair and went off
That's odd, Dad seems happy? But his facial expression seems worried. Maybe he did something he wasn't supposed to, if he did then mom is gonna give him an earful because whenever he does things like this an explosion of some sort occurs. I wonder what's going to blow up this time.
Rapunzel
For the last 16 years I felt as if I were a princess trapped in a tower, like the ones I've read in my book. I've now realized that being locked away for safety sometimes does you more bad than good.
I don't go out much, besides my painting classes. It's always been that way since mom and dad like to keep us close by. I assumed that they were this way because of their parents, they don't talk much about them but they would always say how they never were around other people besides each other.
I do have some privileges like going out to the mall or the park, but that still isn't enough. At some point, you get used to those places and want to go somewhere new. I want to step outside of the box I'm in.
"Mom and dad aren't here?" I went and sat down next to Hiccup who was on the couch
"Dad is in his office and mom is in the garden. What's that you got there?"
I showed him the book in my hands "Oh. It's this book I found at that old bookstore nearby," I continued
"It's legends about protectors of the earth, sort of like gods. They had powers, and could do amazing things, but they mysteriously disappeared thousands of years ago. It's said that they could've lived among us if they were still here."
"I'm sure they are." Hiccup assured me "Mythical creatures don't just disappear out of the blue."
"You believe in anything Hicc" I laughed
A couple of minutes later I decided to walk back to my room and continue working on my painting. I then hear mom and dad arguing, the door to dad's office was slightly open.
"And y-you don't think it affects me hiding them the truth?"
"Clearly not as you've been so committed to do so"
"Oh please Eugene you agreed to this too"
"I didn't think it would go this far! We're putting them at risk by keeping this hidden. Are you really comfortable living in a lie, Elsa?"
"We've been living in a lie our whole life. Always pretending. Always hiding."
"Which is why we fix things now."
"You just assume that they're gonna be okay with it?"
"That isn't a good reason to not tell them."
I backed up, not wanting to listen anymore. As I backed up I crashed into something, I turned around to see that it was Hiccup, I wonder how much of the argument he listened to.
"Let's go" he whispered grabbing my wrist
All I could do is simply follow. We both know I don't take out parents arguments as lightly as he does. Maybe because he's most of them but unlike Hiccup I'm good at hiding what I feel. I know it makes them all worry since I'm never visibly upset, but it's better for me. I wouldn't like to be a burden.
We went back to our room and worked on our projects. We worked in silence not saying anything to each other.
"What do you think it was about?" Hiccup asked
I put my paint brush down and breathed in "Well, how much of it did you hear?"
"I came in when dad asked about living in a lie comfortably," he then confessed "They were arguing about this last night too, it wasn't as bad as today. Or like the other times."
I turned to face him, "Did you know what it was about?"
"No, I couldn't figure it out. All I know is that it's about us. I'm sure we'll find out sooner or later. Especially if it's been eating them up for a while"
I went back to my painting, "They said it's a life changing subject, are you sure they would tell us? It would disrupt the 'peaceful' life we have now"
He sighed "Yeah, maybe you're right."
The silence was loud after that, we weren't sure what to think, I hoped we would find out soon.
Moments later I started to hear taps on my window, I thought it was birds at first who always tried to get in.
But then a guy fell from the window……
