We let go of each other, I headed off to my room walking with Charlotte until I had to take another hallway. I quickly take a shower and put on some gray sweats and a tight black long sleeve. Quickly drying my hair with the towel then brushing it out. I slip on some socks and shoes and head out to the cafeteria. My hair still damp and the clothes sticking to me a little tight I run to the cafeteria.
I hop in line and get a message on my watch from Richard asking to meet up after dinner. I eat fast at the counter giving Charlotte a wave. I head out to meet up with Richard. I jog over to his office knocking on his door before coming in. He gestures for me to sit down.
He turns around the folder he has on his desk, taking off his glasses and setting them down on the desk.
"There has been a emergency beacon from one of the bigger lifeboats that we didn't know was alive until now. The passengers on that craft are the key to us getting off this world, they made the Aurora and we believe they can make us a way to contact help." He explains showing me pictures of a few of the passengers
"You need me to go" I say sitting back into the chair. He nods in agreement. "How soon will I have to leave?" I ask, thinking about Charlotte and the relationship we are starting.
"0400 tomorrow" he says with a sad look on his face. "Okay" I stand up and said, "Send the details to my tablet, I will be ready" I gave him a nod and walked out of the room. The clock reads 9:30 I head over to Caleb's computer lab and peek inside seeing Caleb and Gwen shooting trash across the room into the trash can.
I knock, opening the door with a smile. "Hey could I talk to Caleb for a minute" I ask, Caleb seeing through my fake smile and stops shooting and gives Gwen a smile then steps out into the hall with me. I explain what I have to do, forwarding over the info of my trip to Caleb's tablet. "You just got back! How are you already being sent off again?!" He asks, upset with the timing of it and frustrated that it has to be me… again. "How long will you be gone?" he asks, looking at my tablet with the information on it.
"My guess would be no less than half a year" I answer, closing the screen on my tablet. Unable to keep my fake smile on my face any longer. Caleb gives me a tight hug. I hug him back tightly holding back my tears.
"You be careful and make sure to stay in contact when you can" He says letting me go. I nod, giving him one last pat on the shoulder before walking to my ship bay.
I plug in all of the batteries for the seamoth. After they are charging I grab my tablet and notice a I got a message from Charlotte reading
*You took off fast from dinner, let me know all about it tomorrow when you treat me to breakfast*
I take a few deep breaths then put my tablet over my shoulder and walk to Charlotte's room. Once I get there the lights are out, I quietly open the door and see her sleeping on her bed hugging one of her pillows. I close the door behind me, I walk up to the bed, setting my tablet on the nightstand and slipping off my shoes beside her bed.
I move the pillow from her arms, waking her up a little bit then sliding under the blanket and putting one arm under her head and the other around her pulling her close to me.
She wraps one arm around me nuzzling into my neck and the other on my chest. I give her a kiss on her forehead and pull her close just rubbing my hand on her head gently.
I stay awake throughout the night, 4:00 coming way too fast. At 3:00 I woke Charlotte up. She smiles up at me realizing who was holding her, quickly her expression changes as I fight to keep back tears, unable to put on a strong face.
"What's wrong?" She asks, sitting up, now fully awake. "I have to leave again" I say after a breath. I grab her hands trying to comfort her. She takes her hands out of mine.
"No… No you can't leave you just got back" I just look back at her with a sad smile.
"Was it my dad?" She asks, getting the answer from my reaction. She gets up out of the bed and walks toward the door.
I grab her pulling her into my chest stopping her from leaving the room. She lets her tears fall and pounds her hands into my chest. I just take the hits holding her tight in my embrace. She stops hitting me and falls weak into my hold. My watch goes off letting me know it was time for me to leave.
Charlotte stiffened at the alarm. "We should say goodbye here" I say looking down at her. I wipe her cheeks with my thumbs smiling down at her. I grab her kissing her longingly she kisses me back, her arms going around my neck holding me tight.
I break us apart when we are gasping for air, putting my forehead to hers. I give her one last kiss on her forehead then grab my tablet and walk out of her room.
I head straight to my room and change clothes. I grab the recording device I used to record my thoughts everyday I've been on this planet and click record…. I write a note for Charlotte and leave the recorder on top of my dresser. I headed out to my ship bay where Richard was already waiting outside.
I open the door for us to walk through, he helps me get the seamoth batteries in and unhook her, and slipping two of the small bots I made earlier into the side of the seamoth. I hop in the seamoth getting a thank you from Richard before closing the hood and diving under the water.
I start the auto pilot and fall asleep as soon as I double check all of the systems are functioning correctly. I woke up a few hours later because the seamoth auto piloted through a school of fish.
I turn on the camera that is in the hood of the seamoth, i see a picture of me come up on the screen that is built into the hood of the seamoth.
I hit play. I record the date, distance from base, time, battery percentage on the seamoth and how utterly bored I am. After joking on the camera for a while I sign off and save it as day one into the files that will auto send when I reach lifepod IV.
It takes me 12 days to reach the beacon's area, resting when I get tired and studying programming and hardware books that Caleb insisted I download onto my tablet. Getting some swimming in when the seamoth would charge.
The seamoth stopped when we reached the zone, waking me up due to the sudden stop. Rubbing out the tiredness in my eyes, I sit up properly and grab the glove that controls the seamoth.
I head up to the surface and let the seamoth charge up. I drop one of the small bots into the water in the zone and watch the map grow as it falls to the bottom. After 30 minutes or so it picks up an unidentified object that looks like it is tucked under a collection of rocks about 800 meters down.
After an hour more the signal from the small bot stopped picking up. It reached 1,556 depth so it probably got crushed under the pressure.
I check the batteries seeing that they are at 92% charged. I grab the wetsuit from the storage compartment and change quickly grabbing my mask with the ait tank connected on the side of it.
I clip the mask onto the hook on the wetsuits chest. And grab a waterproof bag and pack it with a small first aid kit and one extra air tank. I put my belt around my waist and slid my knife into the holder on my left side and my flashlight into the holder on the right side.
I pull my diving boots out and slip them on, pulling my flippers out and setting them next to my seat in the seamoth.
I close the container locking then closing the hood of the seamoth. I head down toward the object located earlier. It gets too dark to see soon into the dive causing me to turn on the lights of the seamoth. I reach 198 meters and the seamoth starts to send off an alarm from the pressure. I stop and go back up 5 meters causing the alarm to stop going off.
I grab the glove I control the seamoth with and close the open drawers in the seamoth, grab my flippers, put on my mask, then open the hood slipping out into the ocean. I use the glove to close the hood and watch as the seamoth empties out the water inside making it all dry. I turn the high beams on and turn the seamoth on target following, the beams are pointed at me instantly making me cover my eyes.
I turn and slip my flippers on and start swimming down. After another 100 meters of swimming I can finally see the edge of the object under the rocks. I continue swimming, thankful for all that exercise I did before coming on this trip. I reach another 100 meters at a good pace.
This far down it is becoming hard to see with the high beams from the seamoth. I turn the seamoth into energy saving mode, all the lights turn off and it becomes completely dark.
I reach for my flashlight, turning it on and picking up the pace towards the object. I follow the map that is on my watch, I quickly clear the remaining meters, turning off my flashlight to save it's battery when I can.
Now that I'm near the object it looks like a large submarine, there are lights on inside of it and…. People?
I swim toward the side of the submarine and look through the window and see several people walking, doing chores and chatting.
I swim to the top of it and find the double sealed hatch.
