Chapter 3: First Impressions

* Hello and welcome to Chapter Three!

* So, this chapter will mainly focus on Gwendolyn trying to get Ben to talk to her. I won't say anything else.

Earth-6101

Tuesday – Late August, 2017

The Suburbs

Ben

"Ready for another exciting day at Madison High?" Nathan asked as we walked alongside each other.

"Oh, yeah." I said with sarcasm. "Sure, totally."

Silence fell between us before he spoke again.

"Hey," he said as he playfully elbowed me. "Bet you'll talk to Gwendolyn today!"

I chuckled.

"As if that'll ever happen."

"What? Don't tell me that you don't have the guts to talk to her!"

I stared on glumly.

"Well, thanks for bringing up something that I hadn't considered."

"Oh, come on now! What is it?"

I sighed and looked at him.

"She's a popular kid, Nathan. And I'm a nerd."

"Uh-huh."

"We're in two different cliques."

"Cliques?"

"You don't know what a clique is?"

"No, I do. What does that have to do anything?"

I looked away from him again.

"She's popular. I'm a nerd. Why would we hang out or talk together?"

Nathan fell silent. I sighed and continued.

"Nathan, a brain doesn't mingle with an athlete, an athlete doesn't mingle with a basket case, a basket case doesn't mingle with a princess, a princess doesn't mingle with a criminal and vice versa."

"Dude, don't worry about that. You're a nerd. I consider myself a brawler/defender. And we still hang out. And nice Breakfast Club reference, by the way."

"Huh? Oh, right. Thanks."

"This isn't a movie, Ben. Cliques mingle with each other. It happens."

"Uh-huh, sure."

Nathan went silent again for a second.

"Do you want me to be quiet?"

I nodded.

"Okay, will do."

Two and a Half Hours Later

Madison High School

Second period had just let out and I was on my way to Physical Science. And Gwendolyn was going to be there, so it was going to be fun trying not to speak after the embarrassment that was yesterday. I walked into the classroom once I got there, to see that Gwendolyn was already at the table we had sat at the previous day. I let out a sigh and walked over to the table. I plunked my stuff down next to the seat by the window and I sat down. I hadn't even been sitting down for a minute when she spoke to me.

"Okay, so you were in the middle of telling me your name yesterday when you suddenly wigged out. Do you want to try again?"

I looked over at her. She looked back at me with a patient look on her face.

Well, let's see. I could refuse to answer, or I could straight up just run.

The look on her face shifted to be more serious.

Okay, answer her. Just do it, man!

I looked down and sighed. I eventually looked back up at her.

"My name's Ben Tennyson. I freaked out yesterday because I've never spoken to a girl before."

She continued to look at me, before smiling and sticking out her hand.

"Hi, Ben. My name's Gwendolyn Anderson." She said. "Pleased to meet you."

I timidly reached out my hand and took hers, noticing that her hand was slightly warm compared to mine. We shook hands. Eventually we pulled our hands away and she spoke again.

"I've never seen you around here before. Are you a freshman?"

I nodded.

"I'm a sophomore." She replied.

I resisted the urge to tell her that I knew that. I looked at her with a serious face.

"Pleasure to meet you, Gwendolyn." I said. "I just want you to get something straight. I'm a nerd and you're a popular girl. So, all I ask is that you don't forget that I exist once I walk out of this room at the end of the hour!"

To my surprise, she closed her eyes and began to laugh. Eventually she opened her eyes and looked at me with a smile on her face.

"I like you, Ben." she said. "You're funny!"

That surprised me. I couldn't help but smile back at her. Just then, our teacher, Mrs. Vaughn walked into the room, accompanied by the sound of the bell ringing.

"Okay, class. Everyone take your seats."

Gwendolyn and I looked away from each other as class started.

A Couple Hours Later

Madison High School Cafeteria

Nathan and I sat at our lunch table later in the day.

"So, how was Physical Science with the popular girl?"

I shrugged as I opened my paper bag that Mom had packed for me this morning.

"Oh, come on." Nathan urged. "How did it go?"

"Well, she spoke to me again."

"And?"

"I told her name. We talked. For like thirty seconds."

"And how did that go?"

"How do you think? We talked for thirty seconds or so."

"Oh, right. Boy, it's gonna be funny when she finds out that you're a nerd and just forgets that you exist."

I flashed him a look of offense.

"Hey, I'm just kidding. Just kidding." He said as he put up his hands.

I kept my straight face.

"Actually, I don't think that that's going to happen."

Nathan looked back at me with surprise.

"What?"

"I told her the exact same thing earlier today." I said. "And she just laughed and told me that I was funny."

"She… what?"

I gave him a look of confusion.

"What? Are you surprised that I talked to a girl for once?"

Nathan shook his head.

"No, it's not that. I just, I'm kind of surprised that she thinks you're funny."

"And you don't find me to be funny?"

"No, man! That's not what I mean!"

I got up from the lunch table and snickered.

"Whatever, nobody likes you anyway."

Nathan ignored my comment.

"Hey, where are you going?"

"I need some air." I said as I began to walk away. "I'll see you later."

* So, that's the chapter for today! I hate to cut it short here, but I want to save some material for next chapter.
