Chapter 5: Relationship Troubles

* Hello and welcome to Chapter Five!

* I can't really say anything about this chapter, so let's get right into it!

Earth-6101

Thursday – Late August, 2017

Madison High School

Ben

So, I bailed on Nathan today. I didn't feel like walking to school with him after yesterday, so I didn't. Right now, I was sitting in Physical Science, in my usually spot next to Gwendolyn. Mrs. Vaughn had instructed us to do an assignment in the book, but other than that, we were pretty much in downtime. I kept looking at Gwendolyn, who seemed to be struggling with the assignment. I finally put my pencil down and decided to break the silence between us.

"Are you alright, Gwendolyn?" I whispered.

She nodded without turning to look at me.

"Are you sure?"

She turned to look at me but didn't say anything. I could see a noticeable sad look in her eyes. Eventually, she turned back to the assignment. I looked back at my textbook, before looking back at her.

"Can I ask you a question?" I whispered.

"Go right ahead." She whispered back.

"How does a sophomore get into a freshman science class?"

"I'm terrible with science. I failed both semesters of this class and had to repeat this year."

"Oh, I'm sorry about that."

She didn't say anything after that. I looked back down at my textbook. I tried to focus on the assignment, but I just couldn't. I eventually looked back at her.

"Can I ask you another question?"

She nodded as she spoke.

"Just ask your question. You don't have to ask me if you can ask me a question."

"Why did you let Kevin drag you away from us yesterday?" I asked. "Do you know him?"

She turned to look at me with the same sad look in her eyes.

"My boyfriend would prefer it if I sat with him and his group instead of sitting with you."

I was shocked by what she said.

"What?" I asked.

She nodded.

"Kevin is my boyfriend." She said.

"He's your boyfriend? How can that bully be your boyfriend?"

She looked surprised.

"Kevin is a bully?" she asked.

"You don't know that? He's your boyfriend! And yes, he and his cronies have been bullying me for a few years now."

She furrowed her eyebrows.

"I wasn't aware of that." She said.

"Why are you even going out with him?"

She looked down.

"Being a popular girl gets you attention. Sometimes from people you don't like."

"Wait, are you saying that you don't like him?"

She didn't say anything.

"If you don't like him, then why don't you just break up with him?"

She turned away from me.

"I don't want to talk about this anymore."

"Oh, um, okay."

She went back to doing the assignment and so did I.

Thirty Minutes Later

Once class let out, I followed Gwendolyn out of the classroom.

"Hey, Gwendolyn!" I said. "Wait up!"

She turned around to face me.

"What is it?" she asked.

"You said that you had trouble in science, right?"

She nodded.

"Well, I was thinking that I could tutor you!"

She just stared back at me for a few seconds, before shaking her head.

"Thanks for the offer, Ben." she said as she turned around and began to walk away. "But I don't want to be a bother."

I didn't let her just walk away.

"No, you wouldn't be a bother!" I said. "It's no problem…"

I came to a stop once I saw him. It was Kevin, leaning against a row of lockers.

"What are you doing talking to my girl?" he asked as he looked at me.

He then looked at Gwendolyn.

"And what are you doing with this runt?"

Before she had the chance to explain herself, I beat her to it.

"It's okay, Kevin." I said as I hung my head. "I was just leaving."

"Damn right, you were." He said as I walked past.

As I tried to get past him, he stuck his foot out at the last second, tripping me. I fell to the ground, as Kevin burst out laughing. I looked up at them, to see Kevin laughing as he looked away. Gwendolyn on the other hand was giving me a sad look. However, she quickly looked away from me. Before Kevin could say anything else, I got up and took off running to my next class.

A Couple Hours Later

Madison High School Cafeteria

I sat by myself that day at lunch. Well, not for long anyway. As I was eating, Nathan came over to talk to me.

"Hey, I missed you on the walk to school this morning."

I ignored him as I looked away from him.

"Ben?" he asked.

I still ignored him.

"Come on, Ben. Talk to me!"

I flashed him an angry look.

"Leave me alone, Nathan!"

He looked back at me with concern.

"So, I guess you're still mad, huh?"

I got up from the lunch table and took my tray with me. I walked away from him and dumped the rest of my lunch in the trash, before I left the lunch room.

Several Hours Later

The Tennyson House

Later that night, I was down in the basement using the old computer I had down there. To put emphasis on it, it was an old computer. It had a monitor and one of the bulky computer systems. Oh, and the internet connection was pretty slow. So, this computer wouldn't cut it for helping me with homework.

I was scrolling through the Best Buy website and eventually, I saw it. It was an HP brand laptop and it had 4GB memory as well as a 1TB hard drive. It was better than this piece of crap that I was stuck with. The only problem was that it cost two hundred and fifty dollars.

Where would I get that kind of money? Mom and Dad surely wouldn't pay for it!

I began to think to myself, before I glanced at my clock and noticed that it was ten o'clock. I was supposed to be in bed an hour ago! I let out a sigh as I closed all of my tabs and turned off the computer. I got up out of my chair and walked over to the stairs.

I walked up, turning off the basement light as I moved. A few minutes later, I was up in my room. I was so exhausted that I just collapsed onto my bed, still in my day clothes. I quickly drifted off to sleep.

DarkMinetex (Chapter 3): Nice chapter! it's very great to see this kind of development, it kinda remind me of the first movie of spiderman(2002) by Sam Raimi. And some parts of the spectacular spiderman, because of how are some of the characters and because how it resembles in some way to Peter Parker. Anyways it was a great chapter and I hope to read more of this story!

It's interesting that you should mention that this reminds of the first Spider-Man movie directed by Sam Raimi, because while I do definitely draw inspiration from that movie, I draw much more inspiration from the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series. Ultimate Spider-Man is actually my favorite comic book run ever, even though the series has issues later down the line.

I don't know what it is, there's just something special about Ultimate Spider-Man to me. But anyway, about Spectacular Spider-Man, I haven't really drawn inspiration from it, but I will draw some at some point, it'll just take a while. Anyway, thanks for the review, as always.
