Wednesday Morning – Late August, 2017
The Tennyson House
Ben
The next morning I woke up early. I got dressed quickly and went downstairs, to see Mom and Dad in the kitchen. Dad was sitting at the table, reading the newspaper and Mom was making scrambled eggs and bacon. Mom turned around to look at me enter the kitchen, but eventually she turned back around to the stove.
"Um..." was all I could say before I got cut off.
"Yes, Mr. Mouth?" Mom asked.
I felt my face heat up. I completely deserved this. I had no right to say what I had said last night and I was too hotheaded to realize it. I looked down at the floor with guilt.
"Um, I just wanted to apologize for last night. I'm really sorry about what I said and I didn't mean it."
Neither of them said a thing.
Okay, now I feel even worse. I feel like apologizing isn't even going to make a difference.
But then, one of them spoke.
"We understand, Ben. Just don't say stuff like that again."
I sat down at the table, not saying anything.
You understand? Really? Because it doesn't feel like you understand.
Later
After I ate breakfast, I got my backpack and stepped outside. Nathan was waiting for me a few feet away from the stoop of my house.
"Hey, what made you just bail yesterday, dude? That was pretty cool of you, what you did!"
I sighed as I stepped down the single step and began walking down the driveway with him.
"No, it wasn't cool. I freaked myself out. I had no idea that I could do that."
Nathan shrugged as we walked down the sidewalk.
"Hey, sometimes you don't know what you can do until you push yourself to act."
I cringed.
Push myself to act? I feel humiliated and I wish I knew why!
"Please, just drop it. I don't want to talk about it. Let's just get to school."
I walked ahead of him, briefly leaving him behind me.
"Hey, whatever you say, man!"
Sometime Later
Madison High School
Nathan and I walked into the school's main entry area. As we did, I turned to face him.
"Well, I'll see you in class."
Even though I kind of felt bad, I walked away before he could say anything in return. I walked all the way to Spanish class, arriving a bit early and as I entered, my teacher looked up.
"Ah, Mr. Tennyson." He greeted me. "You are to report to the principal's office immediately."
I looked down with a sigh.
Great, I thought.
"Yes, sir."
I then turned and walked out of the classroom, not even bothering to drop off my bag. The walk to the main office wasn't a long one. Hopefully, I'd be able to get back in time for class to start. On the way there, I saw a familiar face. It was Gwen.
"Oh, hey, Gwen!" I said as I continued walking.
She looked at me, before waving at me without a word and continued walking past me. I turned and watched her go. Once she was gone, I turned to the wall and stopped walking.
Why didn't she say hi to me?
I realized it almost immediately after that as I put my head on the locker in front of me.
She knows about the fight. Kevin must have told her, no doubt.
"Damn it!" I cursed as I kicked the locker, emitting a metallic bang.
I was a little surprised with what I had said.
I never curse! Well, except when I was a kid. I occasionally said a curse word just because someone else said it and I thought it was funny!
"What is going on with me?" I whispered.
I straightened up once again and got back on the path to the main office. I was there less than a minute later. I walked into the office and up to the receptionist's front desk. She looked up at me. Before she could speak, I beat her to it.
"My name's Ben Tennyson. I was told to report to the principal's office."
She pointed down to the other end of the office.
"Down there, third door on the left."
"Thank you."
"Mmm-hmm."
I walked around to the other side of the reception desk and walked to the door that she told me to walk to. The door was open. I walked closer and looked into his office. Immediately, I saw Kevin, J.T. and Cash, all three of them sitting in chairs against the wall. That caused me to get an anxious feeling in my stomach. The plaque on his desk said, Principal Hannigan. He looked up as I walked into the room.
"You wanted to see me, sir?" I asked.
"Ah, Mr. Tennyson. Yes, now that you've joined us, we can begin. Please, sit down."
I looked back at the wall and decided right then that I wasn't going to sit down next to my tormenters. I put my backpack down and sat down in one of the two empty chairs in front of Principal Hannigan's desk.
"Someone reported to the office yesterday that you four got into a fight after lunch. And I decided to talk to the four of you myself. So, do you want to tell me what happened?"
Before I could even speak, Kevin beat me to it.
"Ah, come on, Hannigan! We were just messing with the kid!"
He turned to look at Kevin with an angry look.
"That's Principal Hannigan! Now, how about you tell me what really happened?"
When no one answered, I turned to look at Kevin. He shook his head at me, as if he knew what I was thinking.
"Well?" Principal Hannigan asked with impatience.
There was no way that we was going to get me to keep my mouth shut, I thought.
"Mr. Hannigan?" I asked.
He looked at me, awaiting what I had to say.
"They weren't messing with me. They've been bullying me since the start of the school year. They've thrown apples at me at lunch, they've hit me in the face hard enough for my glasses to fly off and Kevin dumped out my backpack on the first day. I was almost late to class because I had to clean it up. And those are just a few things. I started the fight to try to get them to leave me alone. I guess I snapped under it all, I'm sorry."
He looked at me for a second or two, before he turned to look at Kevin and the other two boys.
"Is this true?"
"Are you seriously going to believe what Four-Eyes said?" Kevin exclaimed. "He needs glasses to see!"
He just looked at Kevin for a few seconds before he spoke.
"Hmm, I see. Well, I'm afraid that the four of you will have to sit in detention, after school today."
"Aw, come on!" the three boys said in unison.
I looked down with a sigh of disappointment.
"Yes, sir."
Oh, Mom and Dad are going to kill me, I thought.
He began to fill out four detention forms and then gave us one each. After all of us had a form, Principal Hannigan spoke.
"The three of you may go. Mr. Levin, you stay out of trouble. And Mr. Tennyson, you stay."
The three of them got up and on his way out, Kevin stuck his tongue out at me. I didn't give it a second thought, nor did I care. Principal Hannigan got up and closed the door behind the three boys.
"Mr. Tennyson, I want you to know that I understand your situation and I sympathize with you. I really do."
Oh, really? Because a second ago, you were coming off like you didn't care at all.
"A lot of kids get bullied. It's not just you. And I promise you, that they're just doing it to get a reaction out of you. And starting a fight is what they wanted: a reaction."
I nodded, pretending that I knew where this was going.
"If you just ignore them and let them know that you're not going to give them what they want, I promise that they'll leave you alone."
Somehow, I didn't believe him. He then walked back to the door and opened it.
"Okay, I've kept you long enough. It's time for you to get to class."
"Yes, sir." I said with a nod.
I walked out his door and found Kevin, J.T. and Cash waiting in the main office. I tried to walk past, but Kevin stopped me.
"Why'd you have to say something?" he said as he got in my way. "We could have gotten off scot-free if you had just kept your mouth shut!"
I didn't say anything as I avoided his gaze. I thought about what Principal Hannigan had said.
What if I just ignore them? What if I don't give them a reaction?
I sighed.
"What did I ever do to you guys?"
None of them, not even Kevin spoke.
"Why are you exclusively picking on me? Just leave me alone."
I walked past Kevin and I had actually thought that it worked. But did it work for real? Of course, not. All of a sudden, I got the worst headache that I've ever had, a pain in the back of my head and neck, but I didn't have any time to think about it. As I walked away from them, I was pushed forward into the table in front of me, which had a few cardboard boxes and stacks of paper on them.
The papers flew up all around us as I fell forwards, banging my head onto the table. Once I hit the floor, I just kind of laid there for a second, before I finally turned myself over and looked up at Kevin, as I held my forehead with one hand. I didn't know what to say, but all I knew is that I was angry. However, before I could do or say anything, Principal Hannigan came out of his office.
He looked at me on the floor and Kevin who was still standing. He must have put two and two together and I thought for sure that we were about to get In-School Suspension, or worse. But what happened next surprised me.
"Levin, what did I tell you about staying out of trouble?!" he exclaimed. "You just bought yourself a week of detention!"
"But..."
"All three of you in my office, now!"
They surprisingly did what they were told. Once they were in his office, Principal Hannigan looked down at me.
"Get up, Mr. Tennyson. I'll take you down to the nurse's office myself."
I did as he told me and got up from the floor. He walked me out of the office and it was only then did he ask what had happened. Speaking of the office, it surprises me that no one in the office did a thing about what happened.
"So, do you want to tell me what happened in there?"
"He asked me why I had to tell you the truth about the fight. When I asked them why they couldn't just leave me alone, he pushed me into the table."
He didn't say anything for a second.
"Mmm-hmm, that's what I thought. You didn't do anything wrong, so you're not in trouble. This time."
This time?
We walked in silence the rest of the way to the nurse's office.
A Few Hours Later
I had been given an ice pack for the welt that had no doubt grown on my head, but I had stopped using it pretty quickly. So, Physical Science came around and I walked into class just as normal. Once I sat down at my table and Gwen came in, she looked at me. Before I could ask her if something was wrong, she spoke.
"You got into a fight with Kevin?"
"Yeah? Why?"
She turned her head.
"No reason."
She turned her head to look at the front of the room again, not saying anything else to me.
Later That Day
"So, you have detention?" Nathan asked at lunch.
I nodded as I bit into the sandwich that Mom had packed me. I swallowed the bite before speaking again.
"Yeah." I said. "And he pushed me into a table because I didn't keep my mouth shut. And that's not even the best part."
"How can being pushed into a table be a good thing?"
"I'm not talking about the table."
"What is it, then?"
I chuckled as I was about to speak.
"Kevin got detention for a week for what he did!"
Nathan nodded with a look of surprise.
"Well, that certainly serves him."
"I know! I still can't believe it!"
Just then, someone sat their lunch tray down on the table and sat down next to me. It was Gwen.
"Oh, hey, Gwen." I replied.
"Sup." Nathan greeted her.
"Hey, guys." She replied, before immediately turning to me. "Not to burst your bubble, but you shouldn't have done what you did yesterday. You don't know Kevin or what he's capable of."
I blinked, unsure of what to say.
"Yeah? Well, he doesn't know what I'm capable of either."
"You're being a little cocky for someone who got lucky in a fight yesterday."
I shrugged.
"Whatever."
"When do you serve your detention?"
"After school today. It's just unfortunate that they stuck the four of us in the same room."
"You got a detention?" Gwen asked.
I turned to look at her as I nodded.
"Yeah. And for defending myself? Yeah, I know. It's dumb."
She shook her head.
"That's not what I was going to say."
"Do you want me to wait for you while you're in detention?"
I turned to look at Nathan.
"What would you do while you wait?"
"I can figure something out."
I chuckled as I shook my head.
"Thanks, but that's fine. I don't mind walking home by myself."
"Alright, man. Suit yourself."
Later That Day
At the end of the day, I went to the detention room. Apparently, you can't read, study, do homework, nothing. I guess you're just supposed to sit there and think about what you've done. The hour didn't go by fast at all. And of course, seeing as we couldn't do anything but sit there, it seemed to go by that much slower. But once time was up, I bolted from that room before Kevin or any of them could say anything. As I ran, I think I heard Kevin say something.
"Nerd. Can't fight for shit. Sure can run, though."
Once I was far enough away from the detention room, sure that they wouldn't find me, I started walking again. I took my time getting to the main entrance/exit. I let out a sigh of content once I stepped outside into the warm, Late-August weather. I took a few steps out into the small courtyard that was situated outside the main entrance.
I came to a stop near the sidewalk and that's when I noticed her. Gwen was standing on the sidewalk, several feet to my left. She had her bag in her hands, which was one of those kinds of bags that had long shoulder straps instead of the two normal straps and was holding it with both hands behind her back. And she was just staring up at the sky ahead of her, the light from the sun was turning a red-orangish color; the sun would begin setting soon.
What is she doing here?
She must have noticed me, because she let out a small grunt of confusion, before turning to look at me. She smiled after a few seconds of looking at me and began walking up to me.
"I was hoping I'd run into you at some point!" she exclaimed, smile still on her face.
"What are you still doing here?" I asked with confusion.
"Waiting for you. When you told your friend Nathan that he didn't have to wait for you at lunch today, I thought, 'Does he really want to walk home by himself today'?"
"How do you know that I don't take the bus home? Or that I don't get picked up? And don't you have anything better to do than wait for someone like me?"
"I can wait for whoever I want!" she said with a playful smirk on her face. "And I've seen you either walking home with Nathan or by yourself some days. I just guessed that it was how you got home every day."
Um, stalker alert? No, I shouldn't say that. That wasn't nice.
"Well, I guess you're right." I said as I started walking, with her coming to walk beside me. "I just like to use the time it takes to get home to think."
"Think about what?"
I turned to look at her as we crossed the empty road with a smile.
"Well, high school is in a league of its own apart from middle school! High school doesn't exactly let you just think that much! There's too much going on!"
She put her finger on her chin as I looked back to the path ahead of us.
"Yeah, I guess."
We continued walking in silence for a few seconds after that.
"Hey, how did you and Nate meet each other?"
I turned to look at her with a chuckle.
"Nate? I'm not sure that I've ever heard anyone call him that."
"Well, how did you?"
I turned back to the path ahead.
"What makes you want to know?"
"Well, one of you mentioned at lunch that I was hanging out with a nerd and a fighter. Something about that seems a little out of place."
I thought about it for a second.
"You're right. I guess Nathan and I are out of place as friends. We're two completely different people."
"Is that such a bad thing?"
"No, not all. It's kind of interesting having him as a friend. I could never get up to his status, though."
"His status? What do you mean?"
I turned back to look at her.
"Well, he's much braver than I am, he stands up for me, defends me from people like Kevin and his cronies. I could never defend someone or be as brave as he is."
"You already are, though. You defend me from Kevin, telling him to leave me be. And while I appreciate it, I don't think it's working. He doesn't take orders from anyone."
I turned back to the path with a chuckle.
"Thanks."
As we walked, she pulled out a pack of gum and offered me a piece, to which I refused.
"So, how did you guys meet, anyway?"
"It was sixth grade. And he approached me and did most of the talking when we first met."
"Just like I did?"
"Yeah, just like you. I don't know why he did it. Maybe he knew how shut-in I was, how anxious I was of new people and how insecure I was about myself. Maybe he knew and he decided to take me under his wing."
"You could ask him yourself."
I turned back to her with a smile.
"I honestly don't care. I'm just glad to have a friend who cares."
She looked away from me with a sad look in her eyes.
"I'm not a friend?"
My eyes widened with surprise.
"Oh, no, no, no! That's not what I meant, I'm so sorry!"
Now it was her turn to smile and she did so as she turned to face me.
"Gotcha!"
I felt my face go cold, as if my skin had just gone pale.
"What?"
"Come on, you seriously thought that you had upset me!"
"No, not at all!"
But I had. She totally had me worried there.
We continued walking, eventually getting into a residential area. I lived in the suburbs about two or three blocks away from the school. It was pretty much a stone's throw away.
"Truthfully, Nathan wasn't the first friend that I've ever had. But he's the person that I've been friends with the longest."
She turned to look at me.
"He wasn't?"
I shook my head.
"I remember that I was once friends with a girl in elementary school."
"What was her name?"
"Kai. It was Kai. I can't remember her last name. We were friends all through first grade. We talked and played every single day, it was great. But once we started second grade, she kind of quickly forgot that I existed."
"Oh. Well, that's sad."
I shrugged.
"I'm not bugged about it. I just kind of remember her every now and then."
There was silence between us, before I spoke again.
"Actually, I had one chance to have another friend. Other than Nathan and Kai, that is."
She looked back at me.
"Another? Who could that have been?"
I let out a sigh.
"A twin."
"A twin? Like a twin brother or a twin sister?"
"Twin brother."
"Really? Well, does he not go to the same school as us? Or what's up?"
I looked back at her and when she saw the look on my face, the intrigued look melted from her face. She seemed to get the message.
"I'm sorry."
I turned away again.
"I was born normally. My twin brother was stillborn."
"I'm so sorry."
"It's alright. There's no way that you could have known. Not even Nathan knows about that and I would appreciate it if you didn't tell him."
"Of course, I wouldn't do that unless you gave your consent."
"Me and my family don't like to talk about it."
"I can understand why."
We both fell silent after that. Eventually though, we continued talking as we walked. Talking about school, about our daily lives, a bunch of stuff really, until I stopped in front of my house.
"Well, this is me." I said. "I guess I'll see you later."
Gwen pulled out her phone and I thought she was going to ask for my number, but she didn't. Eventually, she spoke.
"We should go to the arcade." She replied, before blowing a bubble with her gum.
I was confused.
"Um, what?" I asked.
She put her phone away before speaking again.
"The arcade. You know, the one across the street from the pizza place, in the area with all the fast food places?"
I knew which one she was talking about. It was near a major grocery store not too far from my house. By car, it would take maybe five or ten minutes to get there. By foot, it would take maybe half an hour to walk there.
"Yeah, I know the place. It would take maybe half an hour for me to walk there."
"We should go. You, me and Nate. On Saturday."
I liked the idea, I had to admit. I began to scratch the back of my neck.
"Um, you're the popular girl. Aren't you, I don't know, going to spend weekends hanging out with girlfriends, checking out clothes shops, buying new makeup, stuff like that?"
She rolled her eyes with an annoyed look.
"I don't know if you noticed, but I'm not the stereotypical popular girl. I don't want to be a 'Mean Girl'. I like reading in my spare time. Watching T.V. and past times that other people enjoy."
I continued scratching the back of my neck.
"Well, if you say so."
She surprised me by putting her hand on my shoulder while having a smile on her face.
"If we're gonna be friends, then we have to get you out of your comfort zone! Being a depressed, anti-social shut-in isn't going to work with me, mister!"
I felt my face grow warm. No doubt I was blushing.
"Well, sure I'm a shut-in. But I don't know about depressed..."
"I can see it in your eyes! You're sad and you're begging for help without even realizing it!"
Well, maybe the whole bullying situation has me down, but I still wouldn't say that I'm depressed.
She then took her hand off my shoulder.
"Well, I guess I'll see you later. Good night!"
Wait, that's it?! I thought she'd have more to say!
I nodded.
"Yeah. Good night."
She then turned, still smiling at me as she did and began to skip away down the sidewalk away from me, holding her back in one hand as she allowed her arms to move freely. I watched her as she went, for some reason feeling awestruck.
You seem so alive and happy right now. You're freedom itself. Even if it's just by a little bit, every time I'm with you, you raise my spirits. Maybe I am depressed and I'm denying it. How can I live like you?
I continued watching her go until she was out of sight. I then walked up my driveway and to the front door.
"Mom, Dad! I'm home!" I greeted them as I came through the door.
Dad was nowhere in sight, but I could hear something in the kitchen. I walked in to see Mom working on getting dinner ready.
"Hi, Mom."
"Hi, Ben. Where have you been?"
"I had to stay after school." I said as I took off my backpack.
I rifled through it and took out the form that I was given.
"I need you to sign this to prove that I served my detention today."
She turned to look at me with a look of disappointment in her eyes.
"You got a detention?"
I nodded.
"Yeah, for the fight."
She let out a sigh as she took the form from me and walked over to the kitchen table.
"I suppose it's only just." She said as she signed it and handed it back to me. "Don't let it happen again."
I blinked with surprise.
I surely thought I was dead!
I eventually decided to just be grateful that I wasn't in trouble and move on.

Review Responses
DarkMinetex (Chapter 9): Soooo I can't stop seeing references to the first movie of spiderman but that isn't the point here. Great chapter as always and is it me or the watch is having some secundary effects over the body of ben? kinda like rearrenging his DNA to be at his prime like his transformations? or this kid never knew how strong he was? welp maybe you'll answer that on future chapters.
Thanks, DarkMinetex. Yeah, there are a lot of references to Spider-Man (2002) and that's intentional. So, I'm really glad that you asked those questions, as I was pretty sure that I would have to cover them at some point. And I can answer these questions without having to spoil anything, so I'm perfectly comfortable with answering them now.
So, the Omnitrix having some effects on Ben's body? Kind of, yes. Rearranging his DNA? No. The me just state that the Omnitrix is one hundred percent having effects on Ben. It's just not rearranging his DNA, unlike in my other Ben 10 story, Bride To Be. In that story, as a result of the alien DNA merging with his human DNA, Ben gained "gifts" from each of his aliens.
For a few examples, he got an immunity to burns from Heatblast, improved lung capacity from Ripjaws and impenetrable skin (bullets are still a problem, but he can't easily be cut) from Diamondhead, however, this one has vast inconsistencies, as there was a moment that Gwen bit him on the hand and broke the skin during an abusive bout while he was corrupted by the Dark Omnitrix.
Basically, that immunity to cuts really depends on how I'm feeling while writing a particular chapter and I know so many inconsistencies with a rule that I made as the author really isn't a good thing. Anyway, back to the Ben of this story: I decided not to have the alien DNA directly interfere or merge with his own to further differentiate him from the Ben from my other story.
I guess there's two things that the Omnitrix directly does to Ben in this story: it boosts his confidence and improves his reflexes. Another thing that the Omnitrix doesn't do for Ben is increase his muscle in anyway. Ben will remain pretty slim for most of the story and will only gain a slight bit of muscle, he won't be going past skinny, he may be ever-so-slightly toned, but besides that, his physique won't change.
The Omnitrix's boost in confidence pushes Ben to act, but I wouldn't really say he never knew how strong he was, speaking of which, he'll have to learn to fight on his own, probably. So, just to recap, the Omnitrix only grants Ben two benefits: a boost in confidence and a slight buff to his reflexes. I'm sorry for the long and drawn out explanation, but there was a lot that I wanted to unpack here. Thanks for the review, as always.
Next Chapter: Ben, Gwen and Nathan go to the arcade.
