Grade Three
May (8), Dawn (8), Gary (8), Drew (8), Misty (8), Ash (8), Paul (8)
Dawn was fuming.
Okay fine, she was usually really nice to everyone, and sure, she was often the first to call someone out for doing something wrong, but that didn't mean she couldn't have any fun. That didn't mean she wasn't open to pulling pranks, like Gary was claiming right now.
"Face it, Dawnie," said Gary, laughing. "You're just not the pranking type."
"I am," Dawn said, stamping her foot, her face slightly pink. How had they even started talking about this?
"It's not a bad thing," said Drew, glaring at Gary. "Stop teasing her, Gary."
Gary shrugged, grinning. "Just saying. Drew's terrible at pranks too, so you're not the only one."
"Most of our group isn't a fan of pranks, Gary," Drew snapped.
"Maybe. But they're still good at pulling them. Leaf, definitely, Paul, of course, Misty's not bad, and even Ash can pull some decent tricks."
"You say that as if that's a surprise," Ash muttered.
"And me," May said.
"Oh yeah," said Gary. "And May." The group shuddered, but Dawn was confused. She was new at school, and even though she got along well with her new friends, there were still moments where she felt she was missing out on something. She turned to May. "You like pranks too?"
May's normally sweet expression turned sinister. "I don't usually, but push me hard enough, and... It's all in good fun, though."
"Fun for you," Gary shot back. "Anyways, I think that leaves Drew and Dawn."
"I can pull pranks," said Drew. "I just don't feel like it."
"I can pull pranks too," said Dawn, crossing her arms. "I just never got the chance with you guys."
"Sure you can," said Gary, smirking.
"Careful, Gary," said Misty. "Last time you said that, May proved you wrong big time."
"But they're not May. Besides, Drew's been with us since forever. He's never pulled a good prank on us before."
"Because I choose not to," said Drew, huffing. He turned to Dawn, smiling apologetically. "He just says stuff like that. No need to worry about it, right?"
"Yeah, no need to worry," said Dawn. But in her head, all she could think of was proving him wrong...
When school ended for the day, Dawn headed to Gary's desk. When she was sure no one else was listening in, she said to him, "I'm gonna pull a prank and show you what I can do. Wanna stick around and see?"
Gary's eyes glinted. "Are you sure? I don't think you've got what it takes."
"Positive." She'd even decided not to hang out with her friends like she usually did during recess so she would have time to decide on what to do and how to do it.
"All right, then. Show me."
They waited outside the classroom, saying goodbye to May, Drew, Misty, Ash and Paul. Paul gave Gary a questioning look, but, when Gary insisted he would catch up later, he shrugged and went on his way. Soon, all their classmates had left, and their teacher had locked up and headed off for the day.
When the hallways emptied, Dawn found the janitor and told him they'd forgotten something in the classroom. Of course, he couldn't refuse her sweet, innocent smile, and he unlocked the door. Gary told the janitor they would close the door when they were done, so he didn't have to wait for them. The janitor agreed, and left them to the empty classroom.
"So, what are you going to do?" asked Gary, sitting on one of the desks.
"Wait, let me close the door," said Dawn as she shut it. "In case someone sees." The janitor had locked the door so when it shut, it would be locked from the outside. But they would still be able to open it from the inside.
"I'm gonna prank Ash," said Dawn, grinning. "We're gonna put pencil shavings all over the inside of his desk."
Gary smirked. "Really? Sounds a little mean, don't you think?"
Dawn looked at him smugly. She pulled out his sharpener and found Ash's desk, but right before she carried through with her plan, she paused.
"Well?" said Gary. "Are you gonna do it?"
"Do you really think we should? I mean, should I really do something like this to Ash, just to prove a point to you? He doesn't have anything to do with this."
"Hah!" Gary jumped to his feet, smirking victoriously. "I knew it! You're too much of a goody-two-shoes to pull off something like this!"
"I... guess you're right," said Dawn, hanging her head. "Let's just... go home. This is the worst."
Gary strutted passed her to the door. "I'll tell everyone about this," he gloated. "They'll see just how right I..." He trailed off, frowning at the door. "Wait a minute..."
"What's wrong?" asked Dawn.
"The door's locked."
"That can't be," said Dawn, frowning. "It's supposed to open from the inside."
"Yeah, but it's not." Gary pulled on the doorknob. "It won't open!"
"Let me try."
Dawn tried opening it as well, but to no avail.
"I guess we're... stuck here?" said Dawn.
"Great," Gary grumbled. He banged his fist on the door. "Hello? Anyone out there?"
"We're stuck!" Dawn called.
No answer. Nearly everyone had left. From the window on the door, the hallways still looked empty.
"Maybe your grandpa will get tired of waiting for you to come outside," said Dawn. "Then he'll come looking for you and find us here."
"Nope," said Gary. "I was supposed to go to Paul's house after school today."
"Um, then Paul will come get us?" Even as she said it, she was doubtful. "Or Paul's parents...?"
Gary shook his head. "Paul goes home with his older brother, but his brother has to stay late today. Paul was gonna wait for him outside his classroom. I don't know how long it'll be, and if I don't show up, well, you know Paul." Gary rolled his eyes. "He won't try to find me. He'll think I forgot and go home. What about you? Won't your mother try to find you?"
"I was supposed to go to after-school care today, and my mom's gonna pick me up late. It's gonna be forever before she gets here."
"Really?" Gary groaned. He knocked loudly on the door again. "Come on! Anyone?"
Dawn went up to the door too. "Anyone? Please?"
"Hello?" A familiar voice came from the other side. "Is that you, Dawn?"
"Conway!" Dawn called. Conway was in the same class as them. Dawn had ended up being partners with him for a class assignment once, and he'd become rather fond of her since then, popping up on her at random times. She didn't really like his creepy pop-ups, but he was smart, and always happy to help when it came to her.
"Conway?" Gary mumbled. "Well, better than no one, I guess."
"Conway, the door won't open," said Dawn. "Help us out?"
"Heh heh heh. Well, if it's you, Dawn, then of course I can give a hand," said Conway.
And, just as quietly as he'd arrived, he was gone.
"So do we just wait now?" asked Dawn.
"That's what it looks like," said Gary. He boosted himself onto the teacher's desk and sighed in irritation.
"I guess I shouldn't have tried to prank Ash after all, huh," said Dawn. "This is what we get for doing something like that. Must be why Drew doesn't like pranks."
Gary rolled his eyes. "No. Pranks are fun, if they're done good."
"If they're done to people who don't mind them," Dawn added.
Gary shrugged.
They were silent for a long moment with only the clock's ticking resounding through the room. Dawn checked the time. They'd been there for over ten minutes.
"Ugh," said Gary. "When's Conway gonna get back?"
"I don't know," said Dawn. "Maybe he can't find anyone."
Gary was looking grouchier and grouchier. He was usually so full of energy and mischief, it was weird to see him so moody.
"You must think I'm such a terrible pranker," said Dawn with a sigh. "And now I got us into this mess."
Gary sighed. "Look, Dawn, I don't actually care if you're good at pranks or not. I like them, but not everyone does. I mean, look at Drew!"
"You make fun of him a lot for it," Dawn pointed out.
"We've known each other for a long time. He doesn't take it personally."
"How do you know?"
"I just do."
"I don't think he really likes it, though. I don't like it."
Gary shrugged. "Fine. I won't make fun of you for it anymore."
"And Drew?"
"Whatever."
Dawn frowned, but she probably wouldn't be able to change his mind on that. "But you won't make fun of me."
"Nope. I won't."
"Good." And then, it was really hard to keep her grin back. "And even if you wanted to, I don't think you could."
Gary looked at her curiously. "Huh? Why? And... why are are smiling?"
Dawn shrugged casually, her grin widening as she walked to the door.
"I'm serious, why are you smiling? What...?"
Dawn knocked on the door. "Okay, Conway, I think that's good enough."
Gary blinked. "Wait... what?"
Dawn turned the doorknob, and the door opened easily. Conway slyly peeked in. "Heh heh heh, has Gary learned his lesson, then?"
"What is going on?" Gary said, looking from Dawn to Conway and back.
"What just happened," said Dawn, her face bursting with pride, "is that I just pranked you."
"You... pranked me?"
"I said I wanted you to still around so I could show you a prank," Dawn explained. "I only pretended I was pranking Ash. I was actually pranking you the whole time."
"And I helped," said Conway proudly. "When Dawn found me at recess asking if I could help her teach you a lesson, I couldn't refuse!"
"So," said Gary slowly. "When the door wouldn't open..."
"I was just holding the doorknob so you couldn't turn it," said Conway.
"But I looked through the door window. I didn't see you."
"Because Conway was sitting down," said Dawn. "I told him to make sure you couldn't see him through the window."
"You might have, if you'd tried," said Conway. "I'm actually a little surprised you didn't. I was sure you could see my foot."
"We had secret words and everything. Like, Conway wasn't supposed to say anything and show he was there until I said 'please'. And when I said 'this is the worst,' that was code for 'hold the doorknob'. And that means," Dawn said cheerfully, "that I'm actually not that terrible at pranking. I guess you have to take back what you were saying to me huh, Gary?"
Gary stared at them.
"And that's a wrap," said Dawn clapping her hands together. "A very big thank you to you, Conway. And Gary, I won't tell anyone about this... at least for now. Maybe later, if I ever feel like it." She shrugged sweetly. "Or if you're teasing me too much... Anyways, I have to get to after-school care. Bye!"
And she skipped off, leaving a pleased Conway and a thoroughly dumbfounded Gary behind her.
And done! Hadn't done a grade three chapter for so long, so I thought I'd do one now.
So how was it? Feedback is appreciated!
Thanks for reading!
Bye bye for now! Have a great day, and smile all the way! :)
