Battle of Ryloth
Above Ryloth - Ryloth System - November 4 1989
A group of Terran and Republic officers stood around a holomap on the bridge of the Resolute. "That's a horrible idea!" an American officer snapped. "You want to send a teenager and a bunch of dinky fighters against a fuckin' blockade?" "No no no." A German officer said sourly. "Zat will never work, we need a heavy assault." Jason Dawes nodded. Anakin Skywalker frowned. "But the plan-" "Your plan is stupid, General." said another American. "A bunch of rickety fighters won't penetrate a blockade, and teenagers can't lead campaigns."
David Rommel nodded. "He's right." Anakin Skywalker's rather annoying diminutive xeno apprentice was the teenager in question, who antagonized the Terran officers, earning her a reputation as an annoying knee-high throughout the Federation Navy. Luckily, most higher-ups avoided the displeasure of meeting her, which was a pleasure that most admirals and generals weren't able to get.
"We need an increased force, beyond several Venators." Jason said. A German nodded. "We can call for more capitals." An American said. The Republic officers grimaced. They didn't like having their plans so heavily scrutinized like this, as they were by now used to the clones, who took any order without question. The Terrans themselves disliked the Republic officers, who they viewed as inexperienced and weak.
They also viewed the Republic officers as pompous, spending far too much time in their Coruscant apartments, making foolish decisions and never being punished for it. The Republic officers, on the otherhand, viewed the Terrans as primitives and backwaters, not understanding the firsthand war horrors many of these men had witnessed in the Third Great War and War on Terra.
Anakin sighed. "Alright Admiral, we're try your plan. What do you propose?" Admiral Norman Landon of the US Navy and Reichsadmiral Wilhelm Von Wolf both looked at each other and stepped up. "First, of course, more capitals. Along with smaller ships for protection." Landon said. "Zen we assault the Confederate capitals as hard as possible." Wolf said. "We break their blockade."
"We need to hit them as hard as possible." Landon said. "We shall." Anakin said. The men nodded, and the Terrans saluted. "Ave Libertas!" the Terrans shouted. Hail Liberty, the unofficial motto of the Federation. The Federation and Republic deployed 14 capitals, with several dozen smaller ships and several hundred fighters, a solid attack plan.
The Separatists began to take attack formations, as early skirmishes began. The fighters held back, letting the larger capitals do the early fighting. Foolishly, the Separatists deployed thousands of fighters, taking heavy hits from the capitals and smaller defense ships. The targeted strikes and heavy firepower of the capitals allowed them to barrage the Confederates, but the blockade was still holding.
The Terrans and Republic hit harder, focusing much of their heavy fire on the main Lucrehulk class capital ship, the center of the blockade. The heavy fire pounding away at the ship was causing it to rapidly crumble, as reinforcements for the Seps arrived. "Now or never." Landon breathed as the Terran/Republic lines began to take heavy fire, however, the Confederate lines were also suffering, and the main Lucrehulk looked on the verge of imploding.
It was now, as the Lucrehulk exploded, shattering the central line of the Separatise blockade, the other warships -mainly Providence class- began to back off, before retreating into deep space. "Should we persue?" Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin asked. "Yes!" Landon said. "No." Anakin said. "Let them flee." Tarkin grimaced. He was one of the few Republic officers who actually respected the Terrans, and he shared their frustration with the Republic's frequent short-sightedness and the Jedi's weakness. Landon and Wolf looked at each other, before Wolf turned back to Anakin. "You want to let them flee?" the Prussian asked, surprised. "Yes." Anakin said simply.
"That's foolish." Landon protested. "I agree with the Terrans." Tarkin said, frustrated. Anakin waved his hand dismissively. With the blockade destroyed, the next phase would be a ground invasion.
For the ground invasion, General Obi-Wan Kenobi, together with Jason, David Rommel of Omega Team, Carl Hall of Omega Team, Commander Cody, and Oberleutnant Wilhelm Jakobs of the Wehrmacht. With this elite strike force was several hundred clones and Terrans -entirely Germans and Americans- spread out amongst the three landers. "We need to remember why we're here." Obi-Wan said to a group of clones and Terrans in the LAAT with him. "We came to aid the Twi'leks, not destroy their home. Cody?" "That means we'll be takin' it back the hard way." Cody said, as Jakobs rolled his eyes and said something to Rommel and Hall in German, causing the assembled Terran troops to chuckle. "Minimal destruction with guns, blasters and droid poppers only. No rockets or detonators."
"Oh, sure." Hall said sarcastically. "Not like the enemy is using those, oh wait, they are." Cody ignored him and continued. "Check your aim, keep an eye out for the locals. Am I understood?" the clones nodded, and the Terrans nodded, but they were conversing in German and very clearly disliked Cody's order. "We're here to free the tail-heads, least they could do is get out of our way." A clone growled. He was met with nods of agreement from the Terrans.
As the three Republic landers began to approach, the Separatist guns began to fire on them. One of the landers was taken out by the heavy artillery. "General, the enemy fire is penetrating our shields." A clone officer said to General Mace Windu on the bridge of one of the other landers. "Get me Kenobi." Mace responded. Back on the LAAT, a hologram of Windu spoke to Obi-Wan. "We can't risk landing the larger transports until you take out those guns." He said. "Pull back." Obi-Wan said. "We'll take care of it." One of the landers deployed Kenobi's LAAT along with several others, as it and the other began to turn around.
"Who's up for a challenge? We're not getting any reinforcements until those guns are out of commission." Obi-Wan said. "Good god." Rommel said, rolling his eyes. Several of the LAATs were shot down as they approached the Separatists, leaving only two to land in the light forest outside the city. "This is some bullshit." Jason said as Hall racked his rifle. The Terrans and clones began to charge through the woodland, heading for the city gate.
The droid defenders began to rain heavy fire on the incoming attackers, forcing them to take refuge behind trees. Jason deflected a blaster bolt as he and Obi-Wan charged for the cover of broken walls. "Goddammit!" Hall shouted as he roughly banged one of his armored shoulders into the concrete. Machine gun nests were defending each side of the gate. Rommel pulled a grenade out, removed the pin, and tossed it at one of the nests, but it fell short and banged into the wall, exploding. "Crap!" Rommel shouted as the gunners pinned down the attack force.
"Try it again, I'll give you some help." Obi-Wan said. Rommel grabbed another grenade, pulled the pin, and chucked it. Using the force, Obi-Wan managed to throw it into one of the nests. It exploded, killing the droids in it. One down, one to go. Cody pulled out a droid popper. He threw it, and Obi-Wan did the same. The machine gunners were killed, and the gate was now undefended.
"Ghost Company, Alpha Company, let's move." Cody said, addressing the two armed forces groups he was commanding. "The wall's secure." Hall observed. "Are we moving onto the guns?" Cody asked Obi-Wan. "We need to know what the droids have in store for us." the Jedi General responded. "We'll send our best men to scout ahead."
The squad began to head through the abandoned town, using binoculars to look at the CIS forces surrounding their entrenched cannons. Two of the clones, along with Hall, had been sent ahead to scout. The three men reached a small alcove, where they then raised their weapons and prepared to charge into a small back alley. When the trio did so, they found a small twi'lek child hiding behind a crate. "What the hell?" Hall asked.
"Ah, it's just a little girl." One of the clones, Boil, said. "Well what are we gonna do with her?" asked the other, Waxer. "How about nothing?" Hall suggested in an irritated tone. "I'm with Carl, why do we have to do anything, we've got a mission to finish." Boil concurred. "We should do something. I say we take her with us." Waxer said. "Are you, dumb or something?" Hall said. "That alien thing will only slow us down." "We'd better get moving." Boil said. "We can't leave her here." Waxer protested. "Yes, we can." Hall said, annoyed. Boil sighed. "Well Carl, we either take her or we listen to Waxer moan about it for five hours." He sighed and got down on one knee in front of the kid.
Hall sighed once again. "Be careful." Waxer said. Hall chimed in with "Make sure it doesn't... I don't know attack you with alien powers or something." Boil reached out with a hand to the small child, before it lunged forward and bit him. "Ack! damn tailhead bit me!" Hall raised his rifle instinctively. Waxer pushed the SEAL's M16 down. "Stop, stop it, both of you, you're scaring her." Waxer then reached up and removed his helmet. "What the hell are you doing?" Hall demanded. "Showing her we're not droids." Boil did the same. Hall, who's helmet was not face inclosing, just kinda stood there, regarding the alien child in front of him with disgust.
The child seemed a bit scared before stepping forward and pointing at each of the men, saying the word "nerra" at each of them. Waxer placed his hand on his chest, indicating himself "No, I'm Waxer, he's Boil, and he's Carl." "Hey." Hall said simply.
"Oh you made a friend, mission accomplished." Boil said. Hall shook his head. "Can we please get back to the mission? I'm starting to wish I was back in Warsaw with the fucking reds." The three men plus the small child began to walk back through the deserted city streets. "I wonder what happened to her family." Waxer said. "Dead, most likely." Hall said flatly. "Hopefully she'll survive this mess." Boil said. "What happens to her, I mean, after we leave?" Waxer asked. "I don't know, do you, Carl?" Boil asked. Hall shook his head. "Oh don't get any ideas." Boil said, apparently recognizing what Waxer was thinking. "We're not taking her with us." Hall finished Boil's thought.
Suddenly, the girl ran up to Waxer, who patted her on the head and spoke. "Ah, there you are." "Good, you caught her." Boil said. "You know, I have binders, if we need 'em." Hall suggested. Waxer stared at him. "What?" Hall said, defensively. At this point, the girl grabbed Waxer by one of his fingers and pointed at a house, pulling him towards it. "What are we doin' here anyway?" Boil asked, irritated. "It's her home." Waxer said simply.
Inside, the house was dusty and abandoned, with furniture knocked over. Hall coughed. Waxer grabbed a small purple plush toy off a table and handed it to the girl, who hugged it and began to cry. "It's okay now, we're here to help." "Don't cry kid, we'll keep you safe." Boil said, before both clones looked over at Hall, apparently expecting him to add something. Hall, who had been fiddling with his rifle, looked over, and read the room. "Oh, uh, yeah, yeah, ditto." He said, giving a little thumbs up before racking his rifle.
"I promise." Boil said.
Meanwhile, back towards the city outskirts, the main force was milling around an old building. Cody was fiddling with his comms, trying to get in contact with Hall, Waxer or Boil. Obi-Wan walked up. "All set Cody?" Rommel also walked over. "None of them are responding." Cody said grimly. "You think they got shot?" Rommel asked. "Maybe. They never returned from scouting." Cody said grimly.
Back at the house, the four individuals had emerged from the house, when sounds of... something began to come from around the corner. Enormous, ugly, flea-like beasts the size of pickup trucks began to emerge. "Holy shit." Hall breathed. "I think I know why the kid never came back here." Boil said. Hall began to fire rounds at the things as his clone companions fired blaster bolts at them. "Let's get out of here." Boil suggested. Hall nodded, a look of terror on his face. He was a SEAL for god's sake, he had faced down communists, droids, rebels, and even bears and all kinds of wildlife. But these things? They were too much for him.
"Carl? Carl!" Waxer was shouting at Hall, who was frozen to his spot as the flea-like beasts began to close in. Boil finally grabbed the SEAL and pulled him inside the house. Hall finally regained his senses and helped his two companions close the heavy stone doors while the child began to tug a rock away from the floor, then lifted up a hatch of some kind. The clones and the SEAL looked at each other, then ran over to help the kid as the beasts began to break into the home.
One managed to get in as the trio of soldiers entered the tunnel.
Meanwhile, the main force had entered the city, and was fighting these monsters. Several clones and a couple Terrans had gone down, as bullets and blasters went everywhere. Obi-Wan had his saber out as Rommel dragged an injured clone out of the way of one. The Jedi Knight then held out both his hands, trying to influence the creatures with the force. Cody shoved the rifle of a German down as Obi-Wan began to lead the things into a cavern. "No, wait." he said. Once Obi-Wan got each beast into the cavern, the clones and Terrans unleashed a torrent of fire on a bridge-like structure, collapsing it and trapping the beasts in the cavern. Obi-Wan managed to jump out.
As the clones began to asses the damage and regroup, Waxer, Boil, and Hall re-emerged. "Waxer, Boil, Hall, where have you slackers been?" "There's an explanation." Hall said. "A long story." "We got sidetracked." Waxer said, as the trio looked down to Hall's left leg, which the girl was hiding behind. "I think I see what sidetracked you." Obi-Wan said. An American captain stormed over. "Dammit Hall! what the hell were you doing?" "Getting roped into saving this child, sir." He said. The captain frowned. "And, what, you went off to the local playground?" This comment raised chuckles from the Americans and Germans.
From there, Obi-Wan, Hall, Waxer, and Boil entered the cellspace where the beasts had been while Cody and his men flanked around. "You keep her here." Obi-Wan said, handing the kid to Waxer before running up the steps to the droid gunner position. A large group of twi'leks were being held hostage, as a way to keep the republic from destroying the guns.
Keeping the girl in the cellblock, Obi-Wan signaled to the trio to follow him as they began to sneak around one of the guns. Across the area, Cody spotted them. "There they are, let's go." He said, as his force of clones and Terrans began to fire at the droids. Caught off-guard, two AATs were now being attacked, while Obi-Wan and his force began to attack the guards. Hall particularly proved very agile, and very expert at shooting and avoiding civilians. Obi-Wan began to use his saber to cut off binders from the various twi'leks. As this went on, Cody's force was struggling to deal with the AATs. "Fall back, fall back!" he ordered, as Americans and Germans shouted similar commands.
Back in the pit, Obi-Wan had freed everyone, and ordered them to follow him, as the droids began to take note of their loss of prisoners. Upon being alerted of this, the tactical droid in command began to pilot his AAT away from the fight with the clones as Obi-Wan and his small strike team helped the twi'leks into the protected cellblock. "Waxer, Boil, come with me, Hall, stay here and shield the prisoners." "We're with you sir." Waxer said as Hall reloaded his rifle. Obi-Wan got into the driver seat of one of the guns while the two clones began to load charges into its ammo port.
Obi-Wan used the artillery to destroy another artillery piece, as the droids panicked. However, the trio was forced to flee the gun as the tactical droid arrived in his AAT, destroying the artillery, knocking the two clones to the ground. The child bolted out of the cellblock towards them, followed by Hall who was providing cover fire.
Hall, annoyed, was cursing in every language he knew, as the kid began to tug on Waxer's arm while Boil got to his feet. The twi'leks themselves began to charge out of the cellblock, angry and heading for the AAT. With Waxer on his feet, the kid ran off again, towards Obi-Wan. Both were now in the line of fire of the AAT. Its tactical droid pilot began to laugh in his monotone, robotic voice. "Ha ha ha ha ha, you lose, General Kenobi." He said. Alas, this prediction would ring false as the twi'leks began to climb the AAT, beating the tactical droid, flinging him on the ground, and ripping him apart as a Republic lander began to block out the sky. Mace Windu and his forces began to land in the town, preparing for the trek to the capital.
"Great job getting rid of those guns." Windu said to Obi-Wan. Meanwhile, as Waxer, Boil, and Hall walked up to Obi-Wan, the girl waved at them, calling out that same word, "Nerra." "Sir what is that she keeps calling us?" Waxer asked. "Yeah, what's it mean?" Hall chimed in. "Nerra? It means brother." Obi-Wan said, before walking off. The tree soldiers looked at each other, before looking back at the girl as AT-TEs stomped past.
Outside Lessu - 3:23pm
Separatist AATs began to fire on Republic AT-TEs, taking the legs of one out. Windu lept out. "Take cover!" he shouted to the men emerging from it, a mix of clones and Terrans. Windu jumped around to the cockpit, shattering its window and pulling the injured driver out. From there, Windu activated the platform of the AT-TE, deploying its AT-RTs.
The AT-RTs began to run across the battlefield towards the AATs, firing at them. Several droids fell as the AATs attempted to blast the walkers. Windu and his group of walkers evaded the blasts, getting up to the droid command post, gunning the two droids in it down. The walkers began to fire on the AATs, downing two of them. As the rest were eliminated, the bridge into Lessu, the Ryloth capital, was shut off.
However, coming to the city were two MTTs loaded with stolen Ryloth treasures. Windu, David Rommel, and Adam Vanderburg, got into one of the MTTs. As the two craft approached the city, the gate was reactivated. Both stopped as droids with scanners began to check them. They detected the three organics and ordered the MTT to open its ramp. It did, and Windu leaped out, slicing at the droids as Rommel and Vanderburg fired at them. An alarm began to blare. "Run for it! they're turning the bridge off!" Windu shouted, using the force to throw the two SEALs to the other side of the bridge.
As the bridge was shut off and the MTTs began to fall, Windu leaped onto the top of one, before jumping and grabbing onto a STAHP bike, staring its droid pilot in the eyes. He managed to pilot the STAHP directly into another, leaping onto the ground alongside the two SEALs, who were climbing to their feet. The trio began to infiltrate the city as the Republic fired on droid positions.
The two SEALs made it into the bridge control room, attacking the droids and re-activating the bridge, as a combination of Republic and twi'lek freedom fighters charged the bridge, breaking into the city. Wat Tambor, head of the confederate occupation, was captured by Windu.
Ryloth was liberated. Alas, the liberation would soon give way to occupation.
White House - Washington - United States of America - 11:21am EST - November 6
President George H. W. Bush, in the Sit Room, looked across the table at the various world leaders assembled in front of him. "Gentlemen." Bush began. "We are gathered here today to discuss something of utmost importance." "Go on." Spoke Vladimir Putin, President of Russia. "I, and my cabinet, have felt increasing suspicion towards Chancellor Sheev Palpatine of the Republic." The leaders began to look at each other.
"Suspicion?" asked Augusto Pinochet of Chile. "How so?" demanded Helmut Kohl of Germany. "Records show Mr. Palpatine has been in office for almost 11 years now, despite the Republic's chancellor being limited to only two four-year terms." "That is... unusual but it doesn't warrant suspicion." said Margaret Thatcher of England. "The Galactic Senate has invested heavy powers in his office." Bush said. "What are you proposing we do?" Putin asked. "I believe, for the good of the Federation, we request to place a 'representative' of ours near the Chancellor."
"A spy?" Pinochet asked. Bush nodded. "This is... big." Kohl said. "It would greatly harm relations if it became public." Thatcher said. "But... it could be necessary." Pinochet said. Kohl nodded. As did Putin. "So it is agreed on." Bush said. The leaders nodded. It was decided.
Sorry for taking so long to update, life got in the way, and this type of chapter takes much longer to write.
So, you may notice how heavily I changed the breaching of the Ryloth blockade. This is by design, since the tactics used by the Republic in the show were god-awful, and I figured the Terrans would rightly challenge this plan and present their own, far smarter, far less costly plan of attack. Also who puts a teenager in charge of a frontal attack?
Some might criticize me for my rather *ahem* negative description of Ahsoka Tano, but you see my dearest readers, I don't like her and I wanted to avoid the common problem (in my opinion) of Star Wars fanfics: way too much worship and praise for that character. If you yourself like her, good for you, but I don't. Anyway this will be my only mention of her in this story, so, sorry if you were hoping for the opposite.
Enough of that, so, I will be following a similar format to the previous battle chapters, albeit with possibly more character involvement from Jason and Omega Team. The spy from the Federation will become important later on. Hope you enjoy this chapter, as always, leave a review with questions or suggestions.
