My sermon, if it could be thought of as such, was the most difficult sermon I'd ever delivered in my life. I was lower than I'd ever been, not prepared at all as I should have been for a sermon of this magnitude. After all, it was to honor Cardinal Reardon, a man I thought very highly of. And I was deeply ashamed. I'd failed my family at the 4077, my friends, Colonel Potter, Margaret, Hawkeye, that young man, Private Sturgess, and most of all, God. After dissolving into tears concluding my sermon, the hug I received from Cardinal Reardon was the best gift imaginable.
