Hawkeye knew that the letter he wrote to President Harry Truman, begging him to stop the war would never receive a response, much less be read by President Truman's eyes. Whom was he kidding, thinking that someone like himself; Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce of Crabapple Cove, Maine, could possibly be responsible for ending a senseless war? It was a nice thought, of course. He'd be considered a hero in many ways. Somehow, even though he knew deep down that the war would go on and on, just writing the letter and seeing the words on paper made him feel better, for the moment anyway.
