Chapter 62: Nancy

"Told you...that wouldn't be...so bad..." Derek whispered between kisses as he and Meredith laid on the couch in the den after lunch.

"They were nice..."

"Mmmhmm..."

"Your nieces and nephews were great with Daws..." Meredith sighed, as she rested her head on his chest.

"I told you there was nothing to worry about." Derek whispered, running his fingers through her hair.

"You did..." Meredith whispered.

"They loved you."

"They loved me or Dawsyn, because I'm pretty sure she talked everyone's ear off."

"They loved both of you."

"It's a good thing we got Dawsyn the tennis shoes she wanted for Christmas...they were all she could talk about to Kristin." Meredith sighed, remembering how Dawsyn spoke eagerly to Derek's sixteen-year-old niece. "She's going to freak out this weekend when she gets to open all the presents."

"Plus...the few extra things I got her." Derek chuckled.

"You spoil her."

"She's my daughter."

"I can't even imagine what you would have been like when she was a baby." Meredith giggled.

"You'll find out." Derek smiled, kissing her head.

"Not for a while." Meredith giggled.

"Soon enough."

"What's that supposed to mean?" She lifted her head, a grin spread across her face.

"Nothing." He laughed, kissing her.

"No babies for a while."

"I know."

"Then wipe that look off your face." She sighed, looking at his smug grin as he ran his fingers through her long hair.

"What look?" He smiled, kissing her again.

"The one you give when you try to get me to do something."

"We're not having babies anytime soon."

"You're still giving me that look."

"I am not."

"You are."

"No..."

"Yes, you are." She giggled, kissing him again. "You want me to have a baby...because anytime that subject comes close...you get that goofy look."

"Because I can't wait until you're fat and pregnant." He laughed.

"You're not making it sound appealing."

"It will be...when I'm rubbing your feet and you're taking bubble baths."

"If you knew what it was like when I was pregnant with Dawsyn, you wouldn't be so excited."

"I can't wait until you're pregnant." He whispered, kissing her.

"Oh, look what we have here." Derek's oldest sister Nancy stood in the doorway of the den, her Ralph Lauren Sweater wrapped around her tightly. "If it isn't doctor and the waitress."

"Hi Nancy." Derek sighed.

Nancy walked into the room, as Meredith began to sit up. "Oh don't stop crowding my brother on my behalf."

"I um...I could go upstairs if you want to talk to him." Meredith whispered.

"No...Nancy...Be nice." Derek groaned.

"I'm a nice person." Nancy shrugged.

"Did you wanna talk?"

"I want to catch up." His sister sighed, watching as her brother pulled Meredith close to his chest, almost protecting her.

"Are you going to sit down or just stand here?" Derek asked, lacing his hands with Meredith's.

"Thanks for asking me in." Nancy rolled her eyes, moving to sit in an armchair.

"How are you doing Nancy?" Derek sighed.

"I'm well...Peter's practice is still the top one in the county." Nancy grinned. "Kristin made the debate team...which is great."

"That's great, Nance."

"That's really great." Meredith smiled.

"How about you Meredith?" Nancy smiled. "How are you doing?"

"I'm uh...I'm really good."

"What's new?"

"With me?" Meredith asked, looking at Derek then back to Nancy.

"Does Derek have any other girlfriends that I should be getting to know?"

"Nope just the one." Meredith said.

"Nancy..." Derek warned.

"What?" Nancy held her hands up.

"Nothing..." He rolled his eyes, pressing a kiss on Meredith's head.

"So Derek, how is it being in a relationship with a...well a waitress?"

"It's...amazing."

"It must be fierce job force." Nancy smirked, eying Meredith.

"It's um...it's just temporary."

"Temporary until Derek decides to marry you?" Nancy cocked an eyebrow. "Big popular doctor...large bank account. Sounds nice doesn't it?"

"Nancy...Stop being a bitch." Derek snapped.

"Not like what?" Nancy argued back. "Everyone was thinking it. You're a single Mom who works on tips until the big bad brain surgeon decides to marry you, tells you to quit your job and hire a nanny."

"No..." Meredith whispered.

"Gold Digger."

"Nancy!" Derek shouted.

"She's some pretty young thing and you decided that she was the best replacement for Addison?" Nancy groaned, looking at her brother. "There were plenty of successful, smart women that we wanted to set you up with you and you bring back one you met at...day care?"

"She's not a replacement for Addison." Derek argued. "She's the love of my life...And if you can't accept that fine. But she's not just some girl I picked up...She's smart and successful...and I really don't care if you can't see that."

"I um...I want to be a teacher." Meredith whispered.

"What kind of teacher?" Nancy smirked.

"Kindergarten." Meredith sighed, scratching at her neck from her nerves.

"How sweet."

"Meredith..." Derek's sister Marissa stood in the same doorway, a smile across her face as she held her daughter's stuffed pig in one hand. "Don't worry about Nancy. She's cranky and...bitter."

"Oh..." Meredith whispered.

"Nancy, don't scare Meredith off." Marissa sighed, moving to sit on the arm of Nancy's chair.

"I'm just trying to protect my brother." Nancy huffed.

"He doesn't look like he wants protected." Marissa smiled, as Derek held Meredith close. "By the way Meredith...is your hair that color naturally. Because I love that color."

"Oh...thanks." Meredith smiled weakly. "I um...it's natural."

"Yeah right." Nancy muttered.

"Nancy...what is the name of the woman who colors your hair?" Marissa giggled.

"You can't honestly tell me that you think she really loves him." Nancy stated.

"You can't honestly tell me you think she doesn't." Marissa snapped. "Meredith excuse her...you see she's a bitter woman."

"I'm protecting my family."

"The only person who's going to need protecting is you." Derek muttered.

"Nancy." Meredith whispered.

"What?" Nancy snapped.

"I love him." Meredith whispered, looking up at Derek as she took a deep breath. Her legs were doing the numb thing, she really couldn't feel them. "I love him and I never...I didn't plan on any of this. Everything you think...I worried about that and I...I love him. It might not make sense and it's completely rushed but I do love him. My daughter loves him and she...Derek and I are giving her a family. He's our family and I love him. We love him and he wants things. We both want things and we know its fast. We know that. We do. But we're happy, I'm finally letting us be happy."

"Is that enough for you?" Derek asked Nancy, smiling at Meredith.

"I...want to know what happens when this happiness cloud moves away?"

"We...I don't think it can. It won't...it could but I mean another cloud will move in because we want things. I...Derek is a dad. He's Dawsyn's Dad but one day...we're having a baby. Not now...but one day I'm giving him a baby...well a few babies and we're going to be happy. The cloud might move out...but we have too many of them coming our way and...there will be dark...you know storm clouds but we'll be fine. We're Meredith and Derek."

"I love you so much." Derek whispered, squeezing her hand.

"Do you have anything else to say Nancy?" Marissa grinned.

"I suppose I don't...for now."

"Thank you." Derek whispered.

"I just...I love him Nancy." Meredith sighed.

"Then don't hurt him." Nancy sighed.

"She's tiny...she can't possibly hurt him." Marissa laughed.

"That's what you think." Derek laughed.

"I couldn't actually hurt him." Meredith laughed weakly.

"That's what we said about Addison." Nancy sighed, standing up. "And look what happened."

"She's not Addison." Derek whispered.

"Obviously...look at her."

"Nancy..." Marissa rolled her eyes.

"What are you trying to say Nancy?" Derek asked, sitting up, Meredith still in his lap.

"I'm just saying the girl has never seen the inside of a Saks or a Macys'."

"I have." Meredith frowned.

"Why does that matter?" Derek groaned.

"It doesn't." Marissa sighed. "Nancy has to pick bones dry until she'll stop. Personally Nancy...Meredith looks awesome to me right now. I mean what's wrong with her outfit? Nothing...right?"

"Well..."

"Well..."

"Don't..." Derek started. "Don't say it. You can say what you want about her Nancy...but I love her. And she's my family."

"Seriously?" Meredith snapped, turning to look at him before swatting at his arm. "Everything I said...everything I worried about you said wouldn't happen and...seriously?"

"What?"

"I'm a waitress Nancy...I make minimum wage and hope I was a good enough server to get great tips, but I survived with my daughter before Derek. I don't need him or his money!" Meredith stood, as Derek reached for her hand, and she smacked it away. "I don't need his money and I'm not using him! I'm sorry if my sweater isn't freaking a billion dollars but I thought it was nice!"

"Nancy...Marissa...Could you um...give us a minute?" Derek smirked.

"No!" Meredith shouted. "I'll leave!"

"Meredith..." Marissa sighed, hitting Nancy's arm.

"Mer..." Derek breathed, standing up.

"No!" Meredith swatted at him, turning around to face Nancy. "I just...I know this is you being defensive and protective but that's...he's mine. I can take care of him!"

"Can I please...have a minute?" Derek sighed, looking between his sisters.

"Yeah...Nancy...Let's..." Marissa stood, gesturing to the door.

"No..I'll go." Meredith groaned, turning and walking towards the doorway, before stopping. "Nancy...say the word and Dawsyn and I will be on a plane home."

"She doesn't want you to leave." Marissa quickly said, "Meredith, we like you. Nancy does too she's just...stupid."

"I'm not stupid." Nancy snapped.

"No...you're not." Meredith replied, before leaving the den.

"What the hell is your problem?" Derek shouted, standing in the middle of the room looking at his sister.

"Nancy...now was not the time to be the ultimate bitch." Marissa groaned.

"Oh...it's routine. She'll be fine." Nancy sighed.

"God damn it, Nancy." Derek groaned, pacing back and forth.

"Derek...just calm down."

"No! I'm not going to calm down!"

"Nancy there is nothing wrong with Meredith and you know that." His other sister replied, crossing her arms.

"Do you know how nervous she was about this?" Derek snapped. "She was sick...physically sick because she wanted you to like her. And now she's probably upstairs packing because you had to be...you."

"Well, if it helps her daughter is a delight."

"I swear Nancy..."

"I'm sorry...you were a mess after your last divorce. I believe Meredith is perfect because she loves you...but there are things that make this seem maybe like she's using you."

"I'm not an idiot...And I'm not blind." Derek sighed. "I'm just...What you said to her about being a gold digger...You're my sister, for god's sake. And you say that to the love of my life? The woman I'm going to marry?"

"You're going to marry her?" Nancy frowned, as Marissa's jaw dropped. "I...Derek I didn't know it was that serious."

"Yeah well...It is."

"I do this with every relationship you or my sisters have brought home...not just Meredith." Nancy defended herself.

"Not like this."

"Well..." Nancy took a deep breath, looking up at her brother before scoffing and shaking her head. "The things she said were very nice. It's clear she loves you but I'm your sister."

"What are you saying, Nancy?" Derek breathed.

"It's my job to make sure my little brother has someone who isn't going to treat him like his last wife did."

"He's clearly happy Nancy." Marissa pointed out. "He has a daughter who loves him...Meredith is crazy about him, and they want kids together. How sure can you be?"

"I can't...I have to go talk to her." Derek sighed.

"Just remind her Nancy isn't a complete Bitch." Marissa sighed, smacking her sister.

"Believe me...I will." Derek said, glaring at his sister before leaving the room. He knew that this was a possibility. But he didn't think it would have turned out this bad. Now, he had to make sure that Meredith wasn't on the verge of leaving
