Chapter 3: Natural Evolution

Ruby shifted nervously, but held herself from fidgeting too much. After two hours of chakra-enhanced tree leaping, the pair returned to Madara's hideout in the caves. Obito had told of the events at the camp, but when it came to when Ruby killed the Jounin the eldest Uchiha had his legacy come closer to him to have a look at his eyes. She tried not to blink as much as Madara's one Rinnegan eye examined her silver ones in their normal Sharingan pattern. He was oddly quiet and had an inquisitive expression, and those both at the same time made Ruby nervous.

'Oh god, I hope it's not some sort of disease I got in my eyes.' Ruby internally panicked.

"Uhm, great-grandpa, is there something wrong?" Ruby asked meekly.

"Hmm." Madara mused, his face just a few inches from her own. "Ruby-chan, can you activate your Sharingan?"

Ruby did not need to answer, merely do as he said. In a brief flash, her brilliant silver eyes now showed the three tomoe of the Sharingan. Madara's Rinnegan only narrowed at the sight, forcing Ruby to make a nervous gulp of air.

"Pour more chakra into them, much more than you usually do." Madara ordered.

Ruby did not dine to question her ancestor's command, and focused chakra into her eyes. She poured more and more to the point of what she thought would have been harmful in most cases. On the outside world, the addition of more chakra was making the pattern of her Sharingan eyes morph to the unique look she showed at the camp. Her eyes ached from the added chakra that should've burned a normal eye, but it wasn't so much as to warrant alarm.

"You can stop, Ruby." Madara ordered. "Now how does the world look to you now?"

At first, Ruby was confused by the odd question, that is until she was taken by how crisp in detail everything around her was. She saw small cracks in the walls and microscopic accents around her that not even her normal Sharingan state would ever attain. Ruby knew that this level of enhanced vision was more than enough to see Obito's movements with how she can now take in all that her vision granted her, leaving nothing to be missed in her sight.

"What is this?" Ruby gasped.

"It is because you have the Mangekyou Sharingan." Madara revealed bluntly.

"M-Mangekyou!?" Squeaked Ruby in disbelief.

Learning how to use her Sharingan, Ruby was of course given to everything to its hidden secrets from Madara. The Mangekyou was one such secret imparted to her that became her 'boogeyman' in her two years with her extended family. It was a power in the form of a curse of hatred that had plagued her family in the Uchiha. Their crimson Sharingan derived their power from a cold hatred, and that hatred can lead them to do horrible things for more power. None was shown better than the Mangekyou Sharingan, the next level of her eyes that was only achieved through the emotional trauma that only came from the loss of a close friend or family member. Ruby was absolute horrified and sickened her to no end of the prospect of a close one's death for power. There was an accurate statement that the Mangekyou Sharingan was one of the only things she hated about her eyes.

She wanted to deny that this was just some lucid nightmare, or that her family was pulling a prank on her. However, Madara simply summoned a clear pool of water to see her reflection. There Ruby saw to her horror of the unique pattern in her silver eyes of three large tear drops with white hollow centers.

So how is it that she has it?!

"Why do I have it?!" Ruby exclaimed, snapping back to her great-grandfather for answers.

Only to find Madara smiling at her. "I did not lie that your eyes are unique, and not just in color. No, there is more to them in fact, and this just proves my theory. Besides your own lineage descended from the Uzuamki and more so my own, there is also something mixed within you. Something that was native to the world you were born in, and it combined with your Uchiha blood to create something new."

"What does that mean for me?" Ruby said nervously.

"It means that the you don't have the curse of hate, Ruby." Madara declared, bringing a shocked look from both Ruby and Obito. "You understand that you don't act like the normal Uchiha, but it is more than that. If the crimson of the normal Sharingan of the Uchiha represents the hatred those eyes feed from, then the silver brilliance of yours comes from an entirely different strength. One that may in fact grant you the peak level of the Sharingan."

Ruby couldn't say anything, her mind a whirlwind since Madara uttered that first sentence. She didn't have the curse of hate that plagued the Uchiha, but she didn't feel relief or elation from this news. Now more than ever all Ruby could do was feel bad for the rest of her family. They still were forced to become cold while she stayed bright in nature and power.

"What is wrong, Ruby-chan?" Madara asked.

"Now I feel bad." Ruby said. "How can I be happy if the rest of you can't escape this? It doesn't seem fair that only I am spared."

Madara chuckled. "Don't ever change, my great-granddaughter. I feel as if your kind nature will instead give your strength whereas the hate of our clan did for the rest of us no justice. It only needs to be tempered by the experiences of the world."

He reached out a hand, and Ruby was forced to endure Madara ruffling her red-tipped raven locks. Her protest in the form of a furious pout did nothing to unease the elder Uchiha, who was finding it amusing with his great-granddaughter. How Madara truly missed the possible time he could've spoiled on his firstborn with his lovely wife all those decades ago. This was the closest he was going to get to being a parent, and he was going to make it count.

"Oh, and, uh, I learned a new jutsu." Ruby added as her hands flashed through signs.

The cave filled with puffs of smoke and before Madara's eyes they were fifty extra clones of Ruby. Solid clones to be exact producing their own chakra and even exhibiting their own personalities. Madara glanced at Obito in suspicion, who was oddly avoiding his gaze. Ruby's great-grandfather knew that Ruby had much more chakra than the average person, but even he didn't expect Ruby to use one of the Nidaime's prized techniques at this level. And if she was to use the secret of the Shadow Clone jutsu to her advantage, Ruby will achieve practical years of training in less than a fraction at the time.

"You always find a way to surprise me." Madara chuckled.

"Tee-hii." Ruby giggled with a cheeky grin, sitting down right in front of Madara. "I have another thing I want to ask."

"Go on." Madara allowed.

"Can you tell me about Hashirama a bit more?" Ruby asked.

Madara raised a curious eyebrow. "What would you like to know about?"

"I get that he was a Senju and had the Wood Release," Ruby said, scratching her head in thought, "but you're kinda tough in your own way like a Senju, and your fire jutsus would have burned his Wood Release in record time. Yet he still fought for you on even ground even with the Kyuubi on your side. So besides Wood Release and the body of a Senju, what did Hashirama have to fight you evenly in your final battle?"

The story of the battle between her great-grandfather Madara and his rival, Hashirama Senju, was one of Ruby's favorites from how cool it sounded. That battle proved themselves as Gods of Shinobi with forests grown instantly from Hashirama's Wood Release while Madara met the Senju's assault with Uchiha fire, a full-powered EMS, and the Kyuubi at his command. Probably Ruby's favorite part of the story is when Madara told of how he used Susano in combination with the tamed biju, and the combined clash with his rival created what was now called the Valley of the End. It now dawned on Ruby that with her Mangekyou unlocked she can work her way to having the Susano as well if it can evolve to the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan state.

But it raised questions in Ruby's head just how did Madara lose against Hashirama in that fight. This wasn't in the typical arrogance of an Uchiha, but rather a curiosity when looking at statistics. Hashirama's Wood Release could have been negated with the use of Amaterasu flames, and Madara in his prime had pushed his body to the utter limits and beyond through hard work to match the constitution of Hashirama. Hashirama had greater chakra reserves, but Ruby sensed there was something more to it than just more chakra. Madara's own reserves were absolutely massive comparable to biju!

"So you're asking what Hashirama used to even the playing field?" Madara said, and from Ruby's nod he titled his head upwards in thought. "There was one advantage Hashirama had to endure our battle through the whole night of our combined destructive power. Even a Senju and Uzumaki have their limits when it comes to chakra, but Hashirama was able to remedy that exhaustion that ultimately gave him the edge to tame down the Kyuubi and also fight me to a close victory. Where I had the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan, Hashirama was able to master the ancient art known as Senjutsu, the Sage Arts."

"Sage Arts?" Ruby wondered in great interest.

"I do not know the exact specifics." Madara admitted. "The art of Senjutsu originated from the time of the beginning of chakra and created by the Sage of Six Paths. Our ancestor if you recall. As far as I know is that to master Senjutsu one must become one with nature to take in the natural chakra around us. I know the only method of attaining Senjutsu is through one of the Summoning Animals when they invite you to their realm, or perhaps do what Hashirama did by finding some sort of isolated paradise rich enough in natural chakra comparable to the Summoning Realms."

"That sounds... oddly simple." Ruby commented. "All I would need is get a contract for a Summons."

"So it would seem." Madara mused, his eyes going back to Ruby in a glint of realization. "Ah, I see now. You plan on mastering Senjutsu yourself, don't you?"

"Well," Ruby laughed sheepishly, "it is one of the things that you don't know yourself, so I'll take it as one of the many ways I am going to surpass you!"

"Ha!" Laughed Madara, slowly growing into a roar. "Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Ah, if there's one thing you definitely have from me, it's my ambition. I can hardly imagine it really. Both Dojutsu and Senjutsu in one, just like the Sage of Six Paths. Your only problem is the lack of a Summoning Contract."

"Yeah, where would I find one?" Ruby asked innocently.

"As I recall, the Uzumaki were the main collectors of Summoning Contracts along with their prized knowledge of fuinjutsu." Madara said, a solemn look dawning on the Uchiha present. "But we both know of their fate and that of Uzushio."

Ruby looked down as her expression dimmed. After the Second Shinobi War, her Uzumaki relatives were driven to near extinction when their home was destroyed in a combined assault from Iwa, Kumo, and Kiri. There were only scattered survivors left out in the world. Over the years, the Land of Whirlpool was pillaged of the Uzumaki's 'forgotten treasures' of their powerful fuinjutsu and scrolls of knowledge to be sold on the black market or taking advantage of sacred Uzumaki secrets.

In fact, it was safe to say that Ruby's remaining relatives only come up to at most ten in number, not including her family in Remnant. Her Uchiha relatives two years ago were all slaughtered in one night by one Itachi Uchiha, who became a member of the newly formed Akatsuki organization under Obito's guide, and the only left was his younger brother that Ruby was sure was a complete snob with a rotten attitude. Then that left Obito and Madara themselves as her more immediate family, and any Uzumaki descendants or survivors from the destruction of Uzushio.

"This is really a cruel world." Ruby muttered. "How can it be anything else if it allows the slaughter of an entire family just for the sake of the greed of others? How does it allow infants to be made into weapons only for their own home to torture their lives without reason? Why is it like this? People fight for a cause when it's been twisted for someone else's greed. How can it go on like this."

Madara's gaze softened as he laid a hand on Ruby's head. "Yes, that is how the world is. It is very cruel and twisted into a rotted mess from the people that abuse the gift of life. But, that is why we are here, Ruby. We are born and given the will to change it. That is our purpose, our mission to make a true peace."

"I know." Ruby said, raising her head. "And that's why I am not going to give up. If I can make innocent people safe with smiles, I'll become stronger than ever. Strong enough that the world can't stop me."

Madara smiled. "That's my girl."

"And with all of these mes," Ruby proclaimed, gesturing to her clone army that was harassing Obito by climbing all over him, "I can get it done faster."

"Kami dammit, get them off me!" Obito barked, trying and failing of getting a giggling Ruby off his head. "I am not something to be climbed on."

"But we want to play with you, Uncle Obito!" They all cried.

"AAAAAAAAHH!"

Madara honestly found the scene amusing while Ruby was struggling to keep her laughs down to giggles. Then it registered in Madara's head that Ruby knew of the secret to the Shadow Clone jutsu and was set to abuse the experience transfer to its fullest effects.

'Ah, I have certainly done it this time.' Thought Madara with a sweat drop. 'I've created a monster worse than a biju.'

(One year and six months later)

Her first kill would certainly not be her last. It was an inevitability she had to face as everyone who tread the path the life she had. Since then, Ruby was brought along Tobi's bounty missions for the Akatsuki and the killings became more frequent with the greater danger she faced. Like Obito stated, the feeling never changed, but instead of becoming numb to it she took his advice to grasp and always remember that she was still human.

Madara's theory was correct that her evolution of her Sharingan was progressive and may become the legendary EMS in the coming years. Already Ruby had a firm grasp on the black flames of Amaterasu, she could summon half of the body of the Susano, and she inherited her great-grandfather's Yamui to hopefully gift her travel through dimensions and back home to the rest of her family. The only downside was that she did not possess the capability to use Tsukiyomi and could only use powerful genjutsus through a built up burst of chakra into someone's systems via eye contact. With all these cool abilities, Ruby was reluctant to use them under the danger of the blindness that inflicts the Mangekyou Sharingan.

She had changed since then both physically and mentally. Her silver eyes now spoke of an experience of the true world around her and no longer was ignorant to the state of the world. That did not deter Ruby from her dream as a hero and protector of a better world. Ruby had taken her great-grandfather's words to heart that it was people like themselves that were gifted the will to change the world when no one else couldn't.

For nearly two years, Ruby had set herself on a mission to recover the treasures of Uzumaki homeland from the thieves that have shattered them across the continent. She first then to the ruins of Uzu itself to find any secrets left by her ancestors. Her intuition was correct when she found vaults sealed off by blood locks, and fortunately her blood was just rich enough in Uzumaki blood to open them. From there she recovered a small trove of clan-exclusive fuinjutsu that started her studies in the art, finding it to be oddly invigorating. Her height had grown to 4'8" but under the black kimono and fishnet armor she wore was lean, strong muscle. An ANBU-style chest plate was secured on her chest while her red cloak was secured to her shoulders by two plates of armor. She allowed her to grow a little, creating a small mane of red-tipped ebony hair that spiked wildly at neck length. On her back was a naginate, a present for her last birthday, with the shaft made out of tough red wood sensitive to chakra manipulation, a solid iron ball at the blunt end for blunt trauma, and the blade itself was pitch black made from Madara's limited use of Banbatsu Sozo.

She was far from what a pure Uzumaki can do, but Ruby could not deny the endless usefulness in fuinjutsu. For example, Ruby created a seal painted on her stomach that was used to hold indefinite quantities of chakra in an emergency, and since creating it Ruby poured 90% of her reserves in the seal every day. Maybe it was a bit cocky, but Ruby liked to think with this chakra seal she had enough to take on the biju up to seven-tails.

Among powerful fuinjutsu to combat biju, there was another favorite that was helping in the situation. That being a tied-up rogue nin she was eyeing from her seat on a tree stump. A kunai danced in her right hand with perfect dexterity while silver eyes bore down on the man that she knew was the latest in smuggling Uzumaki treasures, including Summoning scrolls. Attached to his forehead was a sealing tag written in one of Ruby's formulas invented for this purpose. Currently, the sealing writing on the tag wasn't activated.

"Let's start with my first and only question." Ruby said, casually flipping the kunai in her hand. "Who and where is your buyer?"

Her investigation in the whereabouts of the Uzumaki treasures had unveiled some sort of underground party in the continent that were collecting them. It also worked that this group was also serving as a target for Obito's Akatsuki group to build their reputation as an independent mercenary group and one of their major targets happened to be these mysterious buyers. So whatever leads the Akatsuki had Obito would carry to Ruby, and vice versa whenever Ruby found a source of rogue nin so they could send the creep with the strings and mask to collect them for the bounty and build their reputation. At this point, she was so close now that she had captured their top seller and scavenger (read: grave-robber) of the ruins of Uzushio. He certainly was a right end bastard.

"I ain't telling sh-"

The man was swiftly silenced as the blur of Ruby's thrown kunai passed by his left cheek and embedding itself in the trunk behind him... then going through it and continued to pierce through a whole boulder clean through like butter. It only stopped when the kunai dug itself in the ground for over ten meters, causing a slight shift in the earth from the impact. Beads of sweat from fear tricked down the rogue nin's face that was bleeding from a deep cut as he stared at Ruby who looked as though the feat she had done was just a regular Tuesday. Well, it wasn't untrue.

All that was done through Ruby's refined wind chakra she was constantly mastering for over a year now with her other elemental affinities. She could throw a kunai that can slice through anything in its way and unless someone had a foot of solid steel protecting them it was a quick and deadly kill. Even if someone dodged it, the wind chakra that Ruby fused in the blade and surrounded it would shred someone to at least leave a very nasty wound. The only thing that could be worse than that was someone using lightning chakra since that element focused on piercing while wind chakra purely grinds whatever it touches.

"Now, now we can both be adults here and not use such poor language." Ruby chided, which was odd with her childish voice. "So please answer the question."

There was no cuss from the shinobi a second time, but he instead refused to say anything. Ruby could only sigh at the persistence and decided to not waste her time with this. Her hand moved in a single handsign and in response the tag on the shinobi's forehead glowed blue with her chakra. The effects were instant as the shinobi had a small seizure before his eyes took on a glossy look.

"One last time." Ruby said, accosting to the shinobi. "Where are you selling the Uzumaki treasures?"

"Kaiba Canyon; it's the closest checkpoint to the Lands of Iron, Lightning, and Earth." Answered the shinobi, and the seal made him elaborate. "That's where the best buyer for the stuff is and it's always been the same location for years. I don't know the exact location or the names of the buyer. All I know is that there is an abandoned iron mine there. That is all I know."

'Doesn't sound abandoned to me.' Ruby internally surmised, her mind already coming up with a few plans.

"Thank you for your cooperation." Ruby said.

Faster than the eye could perceive, her small fist impacted the shinobi's face with an audible bang. His neck went slack to the right as he entered blissful unconsciousness while sporting a massive bruise and a bleeding, broken nose. She tnen swiped the tag off his forehead for future use and went to retrieve her kunai. No use expending her resources when she can recover them. Now she finally had the bulls-eye in her mission, and she was going to make her sure her shot absolutely destroys it by burning this whole organization.

She had no idea the coming confrontation at Kaiba Canyon would change her life forever... and for the better.

If you're wondering about the inconsistency of the chapters, I am writing them to about 3,000 to 6,000 in that range for this story.
