A day in the park
Grandpa made a full recovery in a few days, but he had to take it easy for some time.
Katsuya needed a job and it was summer vacation so he would be able to work full time.
The solution? Katsuya was working at Kame Game.
"It was really nice of Jonouchi to cover for you at your grandpa's store!" Yugi was going to the amusement park with Anzu, he asked Katsuya if he wanted to go with them but he refused.
"Park with you and Anzu? Nah, I don't wanna get in the way!" Was his answer.
"Thank you, Jonouchi-kun! I owe you one!" Yugi smiled, "Yeah, that was really nice of him!"
"And it's nice to go to an amusement park where the owner isn't trying to kill us," Anzu laughed.
They went to buy their tickets, but before giving Yugi his, the lady at the booth asked him a question, "This is a high school ticket, don't you want a kid's ticket?"
"...I'm 16!" Yugi frowned.
"Of course you are!" The lady offered him a kid's ticket.
Yugi shoved his ID at the lady's face and she finally gave him his highschooler ticket.
Anzu watched the whole exchange with a smile on her face.
They entered the amusement park and Yugi's mood improved a lot, "Look at all these rides! Anzu, what should we do first?"
"Well…it's pretty hot today, right?" She smiled
"...And this place is half a water park, right?" Yugi already knew where this was going.
"And we brought bathing suits, right? You know what that means…"
"Water slide!" They said together.
They crashed into the pool, Yugi wasn't expecting the water slide to be so tall!
"Hey, Yugi! Let's go again!" Anzu got up laughing.
The sun kissing her wet skin, droplets running through her almost naked body, attracting his gaze like a magnet…
That was the moment where he realized that life wasn't only card games.
"Yugi! Let's go! I wanna go at least four more times!"
"...I don't think I should…"
"Why not? C'mon! What are you waiting for?"
"...I…I'll get up in a second, t-the slide was really high! I wasn't expecting it! Just let me catch my breath! Ha ha ha!" He blushed deeply, "God, this is awkward."
Yugi managed to…calm himself by pure willpower and went back to the line with Anzu, sometimes he really hated the hormones who liked to embarrass him instead of making him taller.
If she saw past his shitty excuses, he was really glad that she didn't say anything.
The duo slid six more times before getting tired and lying down on the lawn chairs to get some color.
"The sun is so bright…" Anzu glanced at Yugi.
He was lost in his thoughts, looking up to nowhere in particular, "The other one?"
He looked at her and smiled brightly, "Is there something on my face?"
No, it was still her Yugi, she never noticed how serious he looked when he wasn't smiling, "Nope, I'll get something to drink, want anything?"
"I want a cold water, thanks!"
Anzu took her purse and went to the small kiosk by the pool.
"Hey, babe, can I buy you a drink?" A tanned man in an uncomfortably tight speedo approached her.
"Sorry, but I already have company."
"C'mon! They can wait! Let's have some fun!"
"Excuse me, she's with me," Yugi poked the man's ribs.
"You came with your little brother? That's not a problem! I love kids!" The man patted Yugi's head.
"I'm not her brother!" Yugi pushed the man's hand away from him, "I'm her…"
"He's my boyfriend!" Anzu locked arms with Yugi.
"Yes! I'm her boyfriend! Let's go, honey!" Yugi smiled nervously.
"Of course, dear!" Anzu smiled back.
"... Okay, sorry to bother," The man didn't seem convinced at all, but left.
"Thanks, Yugi."
"Don't mention it!"
"I think we had enough of the pool, let's go back to the main park!" They parted ways at the changing rooms.
Anzu smiled, Yugi's rescue attempt was really cute. He didn't have the same confidence and boldness of his alter ego, but he didn't need that, she just wished that he would realize this already.
After changing out of their bathing suits, they went to the roller coaster.
Then, the drop tower.
And the pirate ship.
And the frisbee.
It was impressive how Yugi was scared of playing horror video games, but was extremely willing to ride the most dangerous attractions of the park.
"Anzu, today was really fun," Yugi licked his ice cream.
"Yeah, it's been a while since I went to an amusement park. Kaiba's doesn't count," She slurped her milkshake.
"I never went to one!"
"Never? But you were so familiar with the rides! You dragged me around the whole day!"
"It's true! I never went to one! I just read the flier before coming!"
"But why?"
"Anzu, you're my first friend, Jonouchi-kun was my second one. I never had friends to go to theme parks and my parents were too busy to take me to one. When we were kids this park didn't exist yet, so yes, this is the first time I've been to an amusement park."
"Well…this only makes the day even more special, right?"
"Yeah!" Yugi smiled, finishing his chocolate ice cream.
"Yugi. It's getting late, why don't we end this with the ferris wheel?"
"That's a classic! Yeah, let's do it!"
The duo got on the ferris wheel. The slow ascent was made in a comfortable silence.
"The view is great," Yugi smiled, admiring the city through the car's window.
Anzu noticed that Yugi was still using the old braided bracelet that she gave him all those years ago, just like herself. The poor thing was extremely battered and so washed-out that the colors were barely distinguishable, did he wear it while bathing?
"Yugi, this bracelet…I gave it to you when you moved away, right? You have no reason to wear it anymore, you're back."
"I can't just throw it away, I've been using it for so much time that I can't imagine my wrist without it."
"You'll have to get used to not wearing it, take it off."
"Why?" He frowned in confusion.
"Trust me."
Yugi removed the bracelet and pocketed it, Anzu asked for his arm.
"That bracelet was made so you wouldn't forget about me, this one is to commemorate our reunion," Anzu tied a new bracelet on his wrist, pink and light blue like her old one. She tied her own new bracelet on her own wrist, this one purple and black like Yugi's old one.
"Thank you…I…I love it!" Yugi smiled.
Anzu smiled back, "Remember what I told you at the Death-T, right? Even when we go our own ways, we'll always be together. This is a symbol of that."
"I thought the symbol of our friendship was the smiley face!" Yugi smirked.
"That's the symbol of the friendship between Honda, Jonouchi, you and me. This is the symbol of the friendship between Yugi Muto and Anzu Mazaki," She smiled warmly.
Yugi looked at his new accessory with a smile on his face, "Hey, we're almost on the ground. Wanna grab some dinner before going home?"
"Sure, there's a cheap restaurant closeby with great food."
Soon, they got out of the wheel. Anzu left first and held Yugi's hand to help him get down.
They left the amusement park and headed for the restaurant, still holding hands in a silent agreement.
"I'm glad a terrorist attack or something like that didn't happen," Thought Anzu before discarting the idea.
Summer Festival
"I really missed this!" Yugi strolled through the Summer Festival with his friends right behind him.
"I wish my sister was still in the city, I bet she still has that old teddy bear," Katsuya said.
"We can get her a new one, my aim is on point today!" Hiroto smiled.
"I want takoyaki!" Anzu was wearing a flower-pattern yukata.
"Let's play some games first!" Yugi was wearing his grandpa's old yukata, he always wanted to wear one and was glad that his grandfather was as short as him.
They went goldfish scooping.
"C'mon little guy, come with papa!" Katsuya tried for the fourth time.
"A little more for me!" Yugi had scooped a few dozen already.
"Jou, why do you want them so much? You don't even have an aquarium!" Hiroto said.
"I'll just give them back! This is about honor!" The paper net ripped again, "Old man, I want to try again!"
"Nope, you had enough!" Hiroto pulled him by the back of his shirt.
"Oh…my net ripped too." Yugi put the fish he scooped back into the plastic pool.
"Not taking them home?" The stall owner asked with a smile.
"Nah, I don't have an aquarium," Yugi smiled back.
The group bid farewell to the old man and left, "Let's get that takoyaki now!"
"You two can go, we'll get some yakisoba for us, right?" Hiroto poked Katsuya with his elbow.
"Right! We can meet again later! Bye!" The duo left, leaving Yugi and Anzu alone.
"So…takoyaki?" Anzu smiled.
"Yeah! I'm starving!" They headed for the stall.
"Hey, Honda! Let's go to the shooting range!" Katsuya devoured his yakisoba with gusto.
"Want to get that teddy bear for your sister?" Hiroto threw the empty package into the bin.
"Of course!" Katsuya threw his own empty package into the bin and the duo went to the shooting range.
"Honda, you do it. You're better than me in this." Katsuya gave the toy gun to the other teenager.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, man. Just do it."
Hiroto took the gun and aimed at the teddy bear, it was an easy shot.
He pressed the trigger.
He missed.
"What the hell, man?! I thought you were good at this!" Katsuya said.
"Maybe my aim is not as on point as I thought…" Hiroto aimed again.
He missed again.
"Sorry, man. Maybe you should take the final shot?" He gave the gun to the blonde.
"Fine!" Katsuya took the gun forcefully and took Honda's position.
He aimed.
He took a deep breath.
He pressed the trigger.
The shot landed.
"I-I did it?" He was genuinely confused, he was horrible at this kind of game!
"Congrats!" Hiroto smiled.
Katsuya took his prize, it was a teddy bear a little bigger than the one his sister already had and with a different color. He smiled at the toy, "Shizuka…I can't wait to see you again!"
"Anzu! Let's get some masks! You can't go to a summer festival and not buy a mask!" Yugi dragged his friend to the mask stall.
"I'll take the fox!" Anzu bought a fox-like mask.
"And I'll take this one! It looks like some kind of warrior!" Yugi bought a peculiar mask, it looked like a man with curly hair and a long beard.
"It looks like a middle-aged father!" Anzu laughed.
"An awesome middle-aged father!" Yugi wore the mask and opened his arms, "See?"
Anzu laughed harder, "C'mon, big guy! Let's cut some candy!" She dragged Yugi to the candy cutting stall.
"I'm horrible at this kind of thing…" Yugi took the toothpick that the stall owner offered him.
"It's not that hard! And even if you fail, you can just eat it anyway! It's a win-win situation!" Anzu started cutting her candy.
"I broke it," Yugi threw the broken candy into his mouth and took another .
"Done it!" Anzu showed her cut candy.
It was a heart.
She broke it in half and gave a piece to Yugi, "Fireworks are starting soon, right?"
"Yeah! We can't miss it!" Yugi ate the candy, "Wanna play something else while we still have time?"
"Of course! I think I saw a ring toss stall on the way!" Anzu got up and left.
Yugi followed her with a smile on his face.
"...This one!" Katsuya pulled the rope, his reward was another tissue box.
It was the fifth already, how many tissue boxes they put in there?
"Dude, give up, no one would put a video game on a festival lottery, it's clearly rigged," Hiroto put his hand on the blonde's shoulder, but he shrugged him off.
"I'll get it! I'm close!" He opened his purse and gave his last bit of money to the stall owner.
"It's not rigged, but I made it extra hard!" The old man smirked.
"Come on!" Katsuya pulled the rope, this one was heavier, he got it
The playstation's box stared at him suspended by the rope he was holding.
"I did it! I freaking did it!" He hugged the box.
"Congratulations, boy. You got the highest prize!" The stall owner smiled.
"Yes!" Katsuya walked away with his new console.
"Aren't you afraid that your father is going to sell it or something?" Hiroto asked.
"I'll leave it at Yugi's home, my old man is not laying his greasy hands on my things anymore! I'm working at gramps' store, remember? I can put a tv behind the counter!" A loud noise interrupted their talk.
"Look! The fireworks started! Let's go!" The boys ran.
"Yugi, let's go!" Anzu ran to the fireworks area.
"Slow down!" Yugi tried to match her pace.
"C'mon, Yugi! You're out of shape!" Anzu laughed while slowing down a little.
"I'm not! I…just…have…short legs!" Yugi ran faster, finally catching up to his friend.
"We're almost there!" They arrived at the area just as the first firework went off.
They watched the fireworks together, it was a beautiful spectacle that lasted only a few minutes.
Yugi looked at Anzu, the light of the fireworks illuminated her smile, "Beautiful…" Was the only thing that came on his mind.
"We're…late…sorry…" Katsuya and Hiroto ran in their direction. They were out of breath and carrying both a teddy bear and a large box.
Yugi smiled, one year ago he couldn't even imagine that he would have so many friends.
