Gamma silently winced upon seeing the number of people that had volunteered. Only two had come out of themselves and a third one only because of his combined convincing skills.
Luckily he had silently prepared for this scenario as he had expected that not many would be willing to take a job where you had to fight dragons, even if he had hoped it wouldn't be this bad.
"Well, let's start with the rest of the equipment. Every single one of you will get a toolbelt and backpack." he walked over to the manikin to show it to them… only to find a naked manikin with no armor left.
"Sorry…" Jimmy chucked embarrassed and when Gamma looked over he realized why. "When Robin showed us how to put it on I wanted to try it out myself…"
"No problem, I just show it on you then." Gamma replied with a chuckle of his own, walking to the now fully armored recruit. "As I said you get a toolbelt and a backpack. The toolbelt currently contains the following items. The compressor-axe that Robin already showed you. It will be your main weapon as well as double as a wood cutting tool if necessary. Then you have a pocket knife. It's not meant to be used against dragons and more a tool than anything, but can be used as a defense against smaller attackers should they get within a range that your axe becomes useless."
He took said knife from the toolbelt snapping open the spring-loaded 15cm blade with a flick of his wrist and the press of a button before showing it to everyone. After that, he folded it back up before putting it back into the belt.
Then he took something that looked like a small bundle of metal sticks. "These are special flares that run on a phosphor mixture. The flame it creates is self-igniting upon contact with air and can even burn underwater."
He took one of the flares and flicked a small switch that was attached to the side of one, causing a white flame to erupt from the hole on top of it.
"It's a great all-around source of light and burns pretty well, so be careful with it, when not wearing your fireproof armor. Can also be used as an igniter."
"If you don't light or fire anymore just do this-" He flicked the switch again, causing the flame to cease. "-to cut it off from oxygen and it turns again." he placed the flare back to its bundle. "By the way, if the flare ever runs out don't throw it away unless necessary as they can be recycled. You can, however, throw it into the nearest dragon's mouth if that's required to save someone so you don't have to be too strict with this request…"
Then he took the next and final device. It looked like a small box with a large handle on top of it.
"This container contains a fluid that makes sick and causes vomiting should you ever get it in your mouth." He tapped the handle. "Simply turn this and it will eject spray out the fluid inside. It's designed to be operational with only one hand or even elbow if necessary."
"Why would we need that?"
"In case you ever get in the unfortunate situation that you find yourself inside a dragon's mouth, about to be swallowed alive."
Jimmy gulped visibly shaken by the reminder of how dangerous their job was.
"I called it Second-Chance Initiative Device or SID for short."
Jimmy nodded, before taking the device back, carefully attaching it to his belt in a way that it wouldn't fall off.
"That's everything for the toolbelt, let's move on to the bag. First of all, it should be said that the bag floats. That way you won't sink with the rather heavy armor should you ever end up falling into the water."
"That's an… interesting way to prevent drowning." Jimmy commented with a chuckle. Gamma ignored him for now.
"Anyway, let's start with the basics. Here you got an emergency ration that includes a water bottle, rusk, and honey, all stored inside a sealed metal box." he took out said small metal box that was around the size of a thick book, that was labeled with a green apple on with sides. "There are meant for emergencies should you ever find yourself cut off from the rest of the team. Not necessarily the tastiest meal, but it won't expire and still be editable 30 years from now. Just keep the container sealed to prevent any moisture from entering."
He placed the box back, taking out a second one that looked almost identical in shape, but was distinguishable by the fact that it bears a red medical cross instead of a green apple. "Additionally you will both be getting a first aid kit that has everything you need in case you need to threaten basic injuries in absence of a medic." he placed the first aid kit back, before walking over to a nearby table picking up a third kit. This one wore a blue symbol of two snakes winding around a winged staff. "Anturia will get an additional more advanced kit to threat everything more complex."
Anturia accepted the box, before opening it to look through, checking the content. "You seemed to have informed yourself." she finally said with a whistle. "This has everything that doesn't require a hospital…"
"I'm not planning to let anyone die today… or any other day." he replied with a chuckle.
"After that, you got a small handheld grinder." he took that tool next before sliding the safety cap out of the way and turning it on, making sure everyone could see what he did. "It's able to cut through almost anything with a good time but is limited by fuel consumption. You can only use it while the pressure canister contains pressurized air that allows it to power this hydraulic tool. Simplified, it's like a fire. You only have so much wood you can burn through before you're depleted and need new. Also, make sure to have the safety's on when you're not using it to prevent it from accidentally cutting your own leg."
He placed the safety cap back in place at placed it back in the back before taking the next and final tool out of the backpack.
"Alright, three more things to go. What I'm showing you now is something to cause some damage…" he showed them what looked like a small leather package with a few copper bands safely securing everything. A small mechanical clock was attached to the outside.
"The following equipment every one of you will get except for Anturia due to the place already being reserved for the medical equipment." he explained, everyone nodding in understanding.
"This package contains multiple explosives that can be detonated either by a custom timer between 3 seconds to 10 minutes or as a boobie-trap with the help of a tripwire." to demonstrate he pulled a thin rope out of the clock. "Once the safety pin has been removed the bomb is armed and will explode according to what setting it has been set to. Its back as well as the hock at the end of the tripwire can be glued to almost any surface. Use it carefully."
"Next equipment is for our medic only." he continued after a moment, placing something that resembled a metal briefcase on the floor. "Looks like nothing special, but when you open it…" he did as told, before dropping it to the floor. Some kind of strange machine was integrated into it with a pedal planted into the middle into it. Before anyone could ask what it was Gamma stepped on the said pedal.
Click, click, click-click-click-clickclickclick, vrrrr, buzz… CLACK!
Everyone started in surprise at the briefcase… that wasn't a briefcase anymore. Instead, a wall seemingly had folded out of it spanning 1,5m high and 2m wide. It wasn't thin either, being multiple centimeters thick which was achieved by three layers of metal plates arranged one behind another thin support beams crisscrossing between them.
"In case you lack cover." Gamma said with a smug grin of satisfaction.
Anturia approached the wall, tapping on it. "Seems quite solid… but how does it fold back in?"
Gamma turned a small crank and with a soft hissing, the entire construction slowly but surely sank back into the briefcase. "It operates on hydraulics, so you need to reapply pressure after each use just like the grinder." he explained, picking it up and placing it back onto his workbench. "I'll do that for you after everything is done."
With that out of the way, he picked up the final tool before returning to the others. "Alright, now it's time for the most important weapon." he explained, showing the tool to them. It was some kind of spear. "This will be your most reliable weapon when it comes to taking down dragons until I find a better alternative."
The spear was completely out of metal, featuring a shaft out of iron and a steel tip.
"Won't our axes be more efficient?" Robin asked unsurely after a moment.
"This isn't meant to be used for stabbing, but throwing."
"So it's explosive?"
"Well, no it's… wait, how did you know?"
"I'm starting to know you."
Gamma simply nodded, accepting that answer for now before continuing. "Well as said, it's explosive. The tip contains a 2,5 kilo explosive. Enough to take down any dragon… if you hit properly."
"2,5 kilo?" Jerom commented. "Doesn't sound like that much…"
"That's 11,5 million Joules of energy."
"Nevermind."
"It has like all the other explosives a safety pin. Note that this one can be defused again if you put the pin back in. Hande them carefully if they're sharp, or you might lose a limb or two at best. Additionally, you will be getting an Atlatl, aka spear-thrower so that you can hit targets at a further range than you could with traditional throwing. Finally, they're also quite heavy, so each of you can only carry one… Make! Them! Count!"
Everyone nodded at that, their faces serious.
"Alright, that was everything to the equipment. If you have no further questions I would like to introduce you to the final member of the team. He will be our compensation against our currently low numbers."
Now everyone's expression was surprised except for Robin who was looking slightly nervous but mostly excited.
"Some of you already know him." a smile appeared on Gamma's face and he gave a nod to Robin who nodded back, giving him the approval to pull the plan through. With that cleared Gamma turned back to the rest.
"Everyone, I would like to introduce you to Basil."
I will be going on vecation tomorrow, wich is the reason why I'm posting earlier this week.
Any tipe of feedback is higly welcome.
