Chapter 4
Diana woke up early the next day so she could set up a surprise for Anne's birthday and talk to Gilbert about something. She knew Anne's feelings, and she was also pretty sure she knew how Gilbert felt as well.
While walking over to Gilbert's, she ran into him. Apparently he had the same idea. After and awkward pause, Gilbert started,
"I can't stop thinking about yesterday. I feel terrible."
Timidly, Diana spoke,
"Me too. I was hoping we could talk?"
The two went to find a place to sit. They ended up at the school house.
Diana just decided to blurt it out.
"I know you love her. I've known since day one. There's just a way you look at her, and if you don't tell her soon, I will. We all know she's too blind to see it. She blocks out those feelings and doesn't think anyone could feel that way toward her. So you need to tell her."
Gilbert was speechless. He was shocked. How did she know? He thought he hid it, but apparently not. She was right, he needed to tell her. Clearing his throat Gilbert started:
"You're right. But how? What would I say? How will she react. It's not something you can just tell a person–"
Diana couldn't take it anymore.
"IT IS WHEN SHE LOVES YOU TOO!"
Taking a breath, she continued.
"Well, just start with how you feel. Tell me how you feel about her."
"Anne. Anne with an E. She's. . .well she's amazing. She lights a room up when she enters. Her smile, the way she cares for people no matter what, it's astonishing. Amazing. She'll have my heart forever. No matter what. I love her.
Gilbert was blushing when he finished speaking. Diana couldn't help but squeal with excitement.
"So why don't you just tell her that?! Exactly that. I promise she loves you. It's not hard to tell. She might not realize it, but she always talks about you. She relates you to many things we talk about. She tells me how sweet and kind you are. And about Bash and Mary. She loves you. Now go and tell her!"
"Alright, but you have to come with me!"
When they finally made it to the Cuthbert's home, they stood on the doorstep while Gilbert composed himself. He took a deep breath and knocked. When the door opened, he saw her.
