Chapter 5

"Gilbert? Diana? What are you two doing here?" Anne said, skeptical of why they were together.

"We'll. . . it's your birthday Anne! And Gilbert has something he wants to tell you!" Diana nudged Gilbert closer to Anne. Her smile was so wide, she couldn't wait.

"Um, Anne? I don't know how I've waited this long to tell you. I mean, I have such strong feelings for you. I don't know how I've kept them in for so long."

Anne looked over at Diana, who looked like she was about to burst. Gilbert continued.

"I'm sorry about the other day. None of what you think you saw was true. Diana and I were just worried about you. Anne, I love you. I think I always have. You're just perfect. I know you think your red hair is the bane of your existence, but I love it. It's my favorite color. And your grey eyes are the most beautiful things I've ever seen. I could just stare into them for hours. Anyway, that's what I have to say."

Anne didn't know what to do with herself. She didn't know how to respond. Was it a joke? Is Billy hiding behind a bush ready to come out and laugh?

No! Gilbert wouldn't do that, would he?

"Gilbert!! Just kiss her already!" Diana was just too impatient.

Before Gilbert did anything, Anne decided she should say something.

"I love you too. But I just need to warn you that you have just confessed your feelings to the weird, scrawny girl who has horrible red hair. Are you sure you want to do this?"

"With all of my heart."

Gilbert leaned in and finally kissed her. This was the moment he's been waiting for ever since he saw her.

Anne felt like she could fly. She couldn't tell if this was really happening or not.

The two finally pulled apart. Diana couldn't help but scream in joy and pull the two into a group hug.

"Finally! You guys have been stuck on each other forever. You know how good this feels for me?!"

"Well I'm glad this worked out for you Diana! How long have you known?" Gilbert asked, expecting for her to say a couple days. Instead she said,

"I've known since the first day of school together. There was just something that drew you two together. It's not hard to see."

"What are we going to tell everyone? I wasn't even supposed to be friends with you! Now, we're in love!"

Anne took Gilbert's hand in hers and kissed his cheek. It just felt so right. This was the best birthday present she could ever get; requited love.
