Chapter 8: The Thing About Toms
Bright blue eyes blinked at the fire colored tom in front of her, her ears twitching as her brother recounted how he managed to capture a rabbit.
"I'm probably the fastest apprentice. You have to be fast to catch a rabbit." Emberpaw continued, puffing out his chest.
"You're such a showoff." Creampaw rebuked, giving him a cuff on the ear.
"Fawnpaw thinks it's a good story." Emberpaw countered, looking expectantly at his sister.
"It's very impressive." Fawnpaw agreed for her brothers sake.
"See?" Emberpaw nudged his sister gratefully.
It was nearing the end of the day and the apprentices were gathered at the fresh kill pile, sharing tongues and telling each other about their day. Emberpaw had a small rabbit in front of him, it looked hardly more than a baby but Emberpaw was proud of his catch.
"Good evening paws." A new voice sounded by the fresh kill pile.
Fawnpaw turned and locked eyes with the handsome black Tom who dipped his head towards her.
"Evening Hawkcloud." Creampaw chirped eagerly, it was hardly a secret that Creampaw was crushing on the handsome Tom. He was one of the younger warriors and had been made a warrior very recently. He was a bit too cocky for Fawnpaw and she had no idea what her sister saw in him. He barely seemed to pay her any attention.
"How are you Fawnpaw?" The Tom questioned her directly, his piercing blue eyes betraying nothing.
"Fine thanks." Fawnpaw muttered, a bit unnerved by the intensity of his gaze.
"I heard you caught a rabbit. Well done." Hawkcloud continued, gesturing to Emberpaw.
"I did!" Emberpaw exclaimed, looking ready to burst with pride.
"I'll leave you to your meals. I don't suppose you want to share this sparrow?" Hawkcloud asked, nodding at Fawnpaw.
Fawnpaw looked at him startled. What was he playing at? Did he really think she would fall for his charms?
"No thanks." Fawnpaw replied gesturing to her half eaten mouse as an excuse.
"That's too bad. Maybe next time then." Hawkcloud dipped his head and padded off to eat his sparrow on the other side of camp.
As soon as he was out of earshot, Creampaw whirled around to face her sister, her blue eyes boring into Fawnpaws identical blue ones.
"Why did he ask to share a meal with you?" Creampaw hissed, her eyes narrowing suspiciously at her sister.
"No clue." Fawnpaw shrugged, unbothered by her sisters harshness.
Creampaw studied her for a moment before stalking off.
"Creampaw!" Fawnpaw called after her sister but the grey she cat ignored her.
"She's mad." Emberpaw commented.
"Thanks captain obvious." Fawnpaw retorted with an irritated twitch of her tail.
"Do you like Hawkcloud?" Emberpaw asked with a teasing note in his mew.
"No way!" Fawnpaw spat in disgust.
Before they could further their conversation, a wail came from the medicine den. A somber Jayfeather carried out a limp figure with the help of Lightpaw. The poor she cat looked exhausted with her fur sticking out and her eyes wide with distress. She was obviously being overworked with the illness that had swept the camp. So far Lillypad, Brightheart and Foxleap had fallen ill. And now the medicine cats carried out Foxleaps body with a distressed Icecloud following close behind. Foxleap had been one of the first to fall ill and with no cure he had passed away from the illness that the clan was now calling Blackcough. Jayfeather has ordered everyone to stay away from the medicine den where the cats who were most ill resided which at the moment were Brightheart and the now deceased Foxleap. Lillypad was isolated in the elders den for the time being while the elders had moved into the nursery temporarily to stop the spread of the illness.
"Poor Icecloud." Fawnpaw murmured sadly.
She hadn't known the Tom very well but it must be awful to lose a sibling. She didn't know what she would do if she ever lost one of her siblings. Foxleaps body was laid out in the middle of camp. He almost looked like he was sleeping. Flowers were woven in his fur by the elders to cover the bitter smell of sickness. The clan began to gather mournfuly around Foxclouds body, murmuring last goodbyes to their deceased clan mate. A black and white Tom padded past the apprentices and stopped by Fawnpaw, his amber eyes troubled.
"This shouldn't have happened." He mewed softly, his fur prickling with distress.
"No it shouldn't have." Fawnpaw agreed as the Tom turned forwards her in surprise, obviously not noticing her there.
"Toadstep…?" Fawnpaw began hesitantly after a moment of silence.
"Yes?" He asked, turning towards her, his sad amber eyes meeting her blue ones.
"Are we all going to die?" Fawnpaw asked quietly, surprising herself by voicing her fears to the Tom who she barely spoke to.
"No Ofcourse not! I won't let that happen." Toadstep reassured her, briefly pressing his pelt against hers in a comforting manner before pulling away shyly, getting up and padding off.
Fawnpaw watched him leave, a bit disappointed at his quick departure. She pushed his absence out of her mind, wondering why it bothered her so much. She then slowly approached Lightpaw. The two she cats had never been close but Lightpaw was her kin and Fawnpaw was worried about her.
"Are you okay?" Fawnpaw inquired.
Lightpaw looked up, a bit flustered. "Yes I'm fine. What can I do for you Fawnpaw?"
"Oh I didn't need anything. You just look so tired. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help." Fawnpaw replied.
"Oh no. I don't want you anywhere near the sick cats. You could get sick too." Lightpaw mewed, hurriedly.
"You could get sick too." Fawnpaw argued, flicking her tail stubbornly.
"I'm a medicine cat. It's my job." Lightpaw flashed back, beginning to walk off.
"Stubborn furball." Fawnpaw muttered.
As she watched Lightpaw walk away, a thought suddenly occurred to her. Was Lightpaw part of the prophecy? She was kin and a medicine cat. It would make sense. Fawnpaw briefly thought about the prophecy and then pushed it out of her mind. She couldn't think about the prophecy when her clan mates were literally dying around her. A coughing sound roused her from her thoughts as she turned to see where the coughing was coming from. Cherryfall stood in the middle of the clearing, coughs racking her body. Jayfeather emerged from his den at once, sharply ordering a reluctant Cherryfall to his den.
"Will you take me up on that sparrow now? You never finished that mouse." A voice spoke from behind her.
Fawnpaw heard her stomach growl as she turned to face Hawkcloud.
"I guess." Fawnpaw gave into her hunger, reluctantly joining the Tom, as she took a small bite out of the prey.
Hawkcloud purred, brushing his fur against her. Fawnpaw flinched back, feeling her appetite vanish. The way he brushed his fur against her, felt a bit too forceful unlike the way Toadstep had brushed his fur against her in a gentle way that calmed Fawnpaw. Fawnpaw caught her sister glaring at her from across the clearing and sighed. She would have to explain to her sister that she had no feelings for Hawkcloud and had simply been hungry. Hawkcloud hardly seemed to notice her pull away as he talked about his patrol and how he had caught the most amount of prey out of all the cats on patrol with him. Fawnpaw curled her lip slightly in disgust. She hated his bragging and regretted giving into him. She didn't want him to think she liked him. Fawnpaw zoned Hawkcloud out as she rested her head on her paws, miserably wondering why Toms were so hot headed and wishing she were sharing a meal with the kind hearted Toadstep instead of hot headed Hawkcloud.
