Lee looks down at Clem and offers the walkie talkie to her. "Clementine.. I know you've been through a lot these last few days, we all have." He gives Carley a sympathetic look. "But I need to be able to trust you with this. I know you're brave enough."
Clem looks at the radio, then backs up at him. "I'm scared."
"That's okay. Fear is good. It means you know what to look out for. Just don't let it consume you."
"Okay.. okay. I'll take good care of it." She takes the walkie talkie, hiding it in her jacket pocket with a deep freeze.
"At least consider what I said. You know I'm behind you one hundred percent, but with that baby on the way, and so many of us wounded.. It might be good to stay here and get in good graces with Bill. It seems you two have already gotten close to him." Carley suggests.
"I'll consider it." Lee accepts.
"It's only a matter of time until someone figures out it's missing. Just be careful." Carley warns.
"You're probably right. " Lee replies.
"Of course I'm probably right. Now, c'mere." She pulls Lee by his collar and gives him the fullest, deepest kiss she can muster, shocking him to the core. Carver comes over as they make out and wrinkles his nose. Clementine cringes.
"Alright, alright, that's enough." Bill says, interrupting the two as they pull away from one another, both red as tomatoes. "Carley, Lee's putting you on watch duty. We'll come and see you later. Eddie and Tisha will show you the way."
"Okay. I'm just about done here anyways." She picks herself up just barely with Lee's help, then gets passed off to Eddie.
"I gotcha, dude, no worries. See you later, boss." The stoner says, wandering off with Carley and Tisha in tow.
"I take it you told everyone here their jobs?" Lee asks.
Carver says, "Sure did. Come on then, go wake the prisoners up. I'll be waiting for you on the roof for planting." Lee and Clem nod and walk out the door together.
In the pen, Carver, Lee, Shawn, Bonnie, Tavia and Troy all stand in front of the gate, opening it up to find the prisoners either wandering, sleeping or crowding Duck as he gets his hand casted.
"Alright, up and at 'em." Tavia calls out to them. Everyone but Lee and Clementine are carrying automatic rifles. Everyone gathers around in front of the authorities. Kenny squints his eyes suspiciously when he sees Lee with them.
"Why are they with y'all?" Kenny questions.
"Lee and I are taking a stab at managing everyone. Carver told us to." Clementine explains.
"I getcha. Did you assign jobs too?" Chuck asks.
"Yeah, I did." Lee answers.
"Can we get this over with?" Troy groans with an eyeroll, catching most of the prisoners' glares.
Lee nods."Right. First order of business, on planting duty: Jane, Molly, Shel and Becca. Jane will guide you on where to go, Molly."
"Come on." Jane says, guiding Molly out of the pen. The blonde gives Lee a smirk that tells him she knows he's forming a plan as she heads out. Danny looks like he wants to say something, but ultimately doesn't when Lee looks at him with a raised brow.
"Carlos, Sarah, Nick, you'll go with Shawn in the ER today. You'll be doing your usual stuff, tending to injuries and taking inventory of medical supplies."
"Wait.. me? Seriously?" Nick asks, eyes wide.
"You'll do fine." Pete assures.
"I don't know anything about that stuff." Nick protests.
"Yeah, me neither.." Sarah says distantly, looking down. Carlos touches her shoulder and forces her to look at him, his presence calming her immediately.
"It's fine. You can be my helper, sweetie." She smiles, nodding. Carlos turns to Nick. "Nick, Shawn will help you take stock of medicine."
"Works for me. Come on, guys." Shawn instructs, beginning to head out.
Sarah turns to Ken, Jr. "Bye, Duck.."
"Bye.." Duck sighs back, watching the floor as Sarah leaves behind Nick, Shawn and Carlos.
"Okay, next: we need a lot of guys to fortify the expansion, as well as the rest of the fences from the herd tonight. Kenny, Luke, Ben, Alvin and Mike, Troy will lead you down there. Justin will be waiting down there for you too."
"Justin?" Ben asks, unfamiliar with him by name.
"He's a douchebag with an ego, but with the right guidance he's a smart worker." Pete explains.
"Come on chickens, let's get to peckin'. Don't think it's gonna be like last time either, this roosters gonna be ridin' your asses every step of the way; you'll be workin' hard." Troy warns, gripping his gun tighter as he speaks.
"Yeah, yeah." Mike murmurs, rolling his eyes as he leads the others towards Troy.
"Stop with that mouth, Michael. It's the reason you're here in the first place." Troy barks.
"Whatever." Mike shrugs. Kenny gives Lee a nod of acknowledgement, trusting in him to make the right move. Alvin looks back at Rebecca as he leaves for his job, his wife holding her stomach nervously.
"We're gonna need a lot of ammo to combat that herd. Bonnie, Pete and Rebecca are gonna be on loading magazines." Lee explains.
"Works with me. Come on Becs, Pete." Bonnie waves them over.
"I got you, Pete." Rebecca offers, grabbing the handles of his wheelchair.
"Thanks, Rebecca. Probably for the best that I do a job that doesn't require much standing." He holds his nub leg as Rebecca wheels him away.
"Danny, Chuck, you're gonna be led upstairs for herd watch. Tavia can take you. Tisha, Stan, Eddie and Carley are gonna be waiting up there for you."
"Whatever you say, boss." Chuck is the only one who replies, as Danny simply nods and follows Chuck and Tavia upstairs.
"Sarita, show Duck where to start cleaning. Wyatt will be there to help out."
"Does he have to work today? He's still hurt, bad."
"I'm sorry, but the herds coming today. We don't really have a choice. Just take it easy with him."
"..Fine."
"Hi, Duck.." Clem's ignored. Duck and Sarita walk right past her, the former much more angry than the latter. Lee puts a supportive hand on Clem's shoulder.
"So then, what are you having us do, master?"
"It's not like that, Walter. You two should go find Johnny in the kitchen."
"Sure, Lee. Sure." Christa begins walking emotionlessly until Walter touches her hand and whispers something in her ear. She nods, then they walk out the gate. As they're walking, Carver enters their vision and accidentally bumps shoulders with Walt.
"Howdy, Walter, Christa." Bill taunts, smirking. Walt glares fiercely before speed walking away with an angry Christa. "Shall we?"
"Where should we go, first?" Lee asks.
"Let's go upstairs and check on how the plants are coming along. We gotta get the food down to the kitchen before noon if we wanna eat a good home cooked soup." Bill answers.
"Sure. That works." Lee accepts.
"You ready, sweetie?" Carver asks Clementine, looking down at her.
"Yeah. Let's go." Clem replies.
"'Atta girl." He smiles at her, beginning to walk with them following.
Carver opens the door to the roof, letting Clem and Lee enter before him. Lee notices a revolver in his back pocket. It's always there just in case. Same one he shot Matthew with. Jane, Molly, Shel and Becca can be seen ahead, pulling up soil and tending to the carrots, potatoes and tomatoes growing in. Lee and Clem approach them. Carver lingers by the door, watching.
"How are the veggies coming along?" Lee asks. Shel and Becca are together, picking potatoes off vines while on their knees. Shel turns to answer.
"They're doing well. Back when we were with our old group, this really wasn't our thing, but I picked up a thing or two from our gardener. Wanna try one?"
Lee nods excitedly. "Sure!" Shel hands a tomato up to him, which he gladly takes a bite out of. Juice explodes on his cheeks and tongue, inviting a flavor so refreshing he can't help but moan in delight. "Mm.. damn, that's good. Here, Clem, try some."
He gives her his bitten tomato, so she takes a bite out of the other side. It's so good that she licks her lips clean. "Wow.. not bad."
"Yeah, we're pretty good at this by now. You can keep that one." Becca says. Clem wordlessly accepts, biting down again.
"All we're really doing here is picking them. There's not much more growing for these ones to do. Jane and Molly have the seeds taken care of too, they're just getting some watering done and planting a few more."
"Good work, girls." Lee praises, earning a warm smile from Shel.
Becca looks more anxious. "About this herd.. I dunno if you know much, but do you think we're gonna be okay?"
Lee gives her an uneasy look. "I can't lie, I don't know. We're doing everything we can to be extra prepared, but we could end up suffering some losses. Just keep your wits and have each other's backs, okay?"
"Sure, Lee. Thank you. We've never really had a herd situation before. There was one before we joined this place, but we weren't there for it and I've heard it was pretty bad." Shel says.
"How'd you guys end up joining anyway?"
"After Becca and I left our previous group, we found Shawn and his group at his farm. For a few months, we lived peacefully there, until Tavia found us and convinced us to join Howe's. I knew a few friends who decided not to go, but the rest of us did."
"Shawn was a savior to a lot of you then." Clem says.
"Sure was. He said he knew you guys, from before. How'd you meet him?" Shel asks.
"He saved our lives on the first day of all this, drove us to his farm to patch up my leg. I was actually on my way to prison when I got into a car wreck and found Clementine." Lee answers.
"Damn. Get any sweet tats?" Becca asks.
"Becca!" Shel scolds.
"I didn't get that far." Lee replies, a small smile on him. Reminded him of Omid.
"Lame. I always wanted a tattoo." Becca mutters, folding her arms.
"Mom would have killed you." Shel laughs.
"She probably would have regardless. I miss her." Becca responds with a pout.
"Yeah, me too." Shel sighs. "Well, we're gonna finish up here. Might wanna check on Jane and Molly."
Lee felt wrong about keeping this information about Danny away from Shel, now that he saw the two actually acting like sisters. He felt like he should maybe talk to her about it. Was it a good time? Would he ever get another chance to tell her?
