Holding her arm, Clem looks over towards Justin sitting in the corner lazily, his eyelids half closed as he resists the urge to fall unconscious right then and there. Slowly looking up, she answers. "I don't want to leave, but.. I really don't want to live under Carver anymore."
Kenny opens his mouth. "Now, Clem-"
"It sounds like you want us to take over." Lee cuts him off.
"I mean.. That's not a bad idea." Clem replies.
Lee looks at the tall, bulky blonde for his answer. "Ben?"
"Sounds like a better idea than endangering the community here. Plus, Carver scares the shit out of me."
He does the same to Kenny. "Kenny?"
"If you can somehow manage it, fine, but my vote remains the same. We're going to find Wellington, once we get outta here. With the lodge looted and this place how it is, I ain't seeing any other option. It's our best shot." He locks his arms firmly around his chest, eyebrows permanently furrowed.
"Wellington? Really?" Ben questions.
"You got any better fucking ideas?"
Lee shakes his head. "We'll talk more later. Keep hard at work, guys," he and Clem turn to leave.
"Yeah, whatever you say." Kenny mutters, watching them go.
On their way out, they find Justin snoring whilst sitting on a bag, his rifle held loosely in his arms. Lee snaps his fingers in his face."HEY! Wake up!"
Justin jolts awake, hitting his head on the wall behind him. "Holy fuck! S-sorry, man!"
"You wanna end up in the pen with the rest of us? Get to work! There's a herd coming for Christ's sake."
"Yeah, yeah, I said I was sorry." Justin gets a hard stare down from Lee, so he eventually folds and stands up, walking over to Kenny and Ben. Lee and Clem leave the room with a lot on their minds. Bill nods at them, bringing them back inside.
As they walk, Carver pulls out a notepad and pen, writing down a few notes. "Gotta say, Lee, you did a fantastic job picking everyone's jobs out. I'll deduct half a point for Justin's laziness, but otherwise, so far so good."
Lee feels elated, catching a sigh of relief. "Thank you, it wasn't easy picking jobs for a lot of these guys, but I did the best I could."
"I can see that. And how are you warming up to things, Clementine?" He takes on a sweeter tone and gives her a gentle smile. She looks up to him.
"It's a tough job, a lot of pressure. But.. I can do it, if I have to."
"I know you can. You're strong. Stronger than all of them. Both of you. I mean that." They stop in front of the armory. "Lee, why don't you go check on the watch crew, and Clementine and I here will stay behind and check on the armory?"
Lee looks down to consult. "Is that okay with you, Clementine?"
"Yeah, I don't mind."
"Alright. I'll be back."
Lee begins to walk away. "We'll meet in the food court, where Sarita, Ken, Jr. and Wyatt are cleaning." Carver orders.
"Okay. Be good, honey." He leaves her behind, heading for the stairs.
"Shall we?" Carver motions for Clem to go in, opening the door and holding it for her. She heads inside, meeting the smiling faces of Pete, Rebecca and Bonnie all sitting around in a circle reloading some heavy artillery. Their smiles fade when Carver comes in behind her. He smiles though, quite warmly. Pete and Rebecca steadily reload mags, looking down. Bonnie nods.
"Howdy, Clementine," She hesitates, "Bill."
"Hey." He replies coldly, standing in the doorway with his hands by his side, his right arm dangerously close to his revolver. Clem approaches the trio and checks out the weapons.
"They're loaded, if that's what you're wondering." Bonnie teases, smiling.
"I was. What weapons do we have to work with?" Clem asks, trying to sound older.
"Glocks, there's a few shotguns, about eight assault rifles not in use and a rifle. We've filled quite a few already."
"Good work."
"Whatcha lookin' at, sweetheart? Something on your mind?" Her glare intensifies. He walks up to her, cupping her cheek. She shrugs him off. "Feisty little thing, aintcha? Hey, any baby names in that pretty head of yours?"
"Just lay the fuck off, Bill." Pete warns, joining Rebecca's hate filled stand off against him.
He looks dumbfounded by what he just heard and who he heard it from, leaning back while looking into Pete's eyes. "'Scuse me?"
"You're disturbing our work."
He shakes his head, grinning. "You're right, Peter. Intimacy should be reserved for those who've earned it. Finish up here, and then.." He leans back into Rebecca's body, trailing his hand over her curly hair, caressing her cheek until his warm, fuzzy lips contact her forehead. She doesn't stop glaring, her fists clenching so bad that her palms begin to bleed.
"Are you done?" She questions beneath gritted teeth.
Clem watches the blood trickled down onto the floor, wide eyed. "I.. think so."
"Then go."
Lee opens the door to the roof once again, finding seven guards looking over the edge, four of them sitting on lawn chairs while the rest stand. Tavia, Stan, Tisha and Danny sit, while Eddie, Chuck and Carley stand, only the first and last with a weapon. He comes up to them.
"Hey guys. Herd still coming our way?"
Carley turns. "Hey, Lee. From the looks of it, it's mostly in the woods, getting closer now, but kind of stuck around the trees."
"Just gotta hope it stays that way." Eddie says uneasily, a tremble in his voice.
"They're gonna have to go through us eventually, Eddie." Tavia replies coldly.
"Don't jinx it, man."
"I'm not jinxing. It's already cursed."
Lee looks at his friends. "Chuck, Carley." They turn to him.
"How's everyone else doing?" Carley asks.
"Good, surprisingly so. Kenny's a little upset, but I don't think we can blame him for that. Clementine's doing well at this manager stuff."
"What about Molly? How's she with that girl, uh.. Jane?" Chuck asks.
"They're hitting it off, I think she likes her quite a lot." Lee answers.
"Not as much as she and Nick, clearly." Carley humors.
"What about everyone up here?" Lee asks, cracking a smile at her joke.
"We're good, considering. Kinda wish you had put me on fortifications, since rebuilding is my speciality, but eh, it's okay." Stan replies, turning at him.
"Sorry, I still don't know you too well." Lee says.
"Well, I'm Stan. I've been working here for as long as Tavia here."
"That so?"
"That is so. We met when this all started and have been stuck together since." Tavia responds.
"She had the brass attitude we needed to keep moving, and I used to be an architect, and before that I was a construction worker. And before that I was a gun enthusiast. Still am." He raises his gun proudly.
"This must have been a dream project for you." Lee says.
"Infinite time, but no money and no resources, aside from wood and metal. So, er, not really. I'd rather work in a less dead world." Stan cooly responds, not seeming too fazed.
"Wouldn't we all." Eddie says.
"What about you, Tavia? You work before all this?" Lee asks.
"My boyfriend didn't want me to. He.. didn't like me going against the money."
"Against the money?"
"He.. well, we lived in the projects. I had a well paying job before him, worked up at Sony for a few years until I met him. I helped with a lot of the communications/subtitling stuff."
"Now that's something. I used to teach at the University of Georgia. So what happened?"
"He didn't like the taxes aspect that came from my job, so when I fell head over heels for him, he all but forced me to quit so we could have an easier time slacking off together."
"So you did?" Eddie asks.
"Oh no, I left him and told him to grow up."
"Wait, I thought you quit?" Lee questions.
"When did I say that?" She turns back to look at the treeline.
"Huh. I never knew that about you." Eddie says distantly.
"That's because you're too afraid of me to ask."
"..Got me there."
"Hey," Lee whispers, looking over at a sad, headspace cluttered brown skinned man looking over the edge of the cliff. "How's Danny?"
Everyone is quiet until Stan answers. "..Weird. Unresponsive. Kind of cagey. I think he's scared, you know, of Carver. If I were him, I'd be planning my escape before the same thing happens to me."
"Please, Bill had his reasons. That little boy shouldn't have been able to do what he did, but under Reggie, he was able to fuck us harder than any stranger could." Tavia rebuttals.
"Yeah, guess you're right." Stans says.
"You think that justifies murdering a man?" Chuck asks, peeking up from his spot with that guttural voice of his.
"What's it to you, Chuck?" Tavia enunciates his name.
"I guess the morals of human beings is it to me, Tavia. The world ain't full of kind, understanding hearts like it used to."
"It never was, you ask me. Almost everyone I met was an asshole or a liar."
"Clearly, you've been working business jobs too long. You lost your perspective." Chuck bitterly remarks. Tavia gives him a narrow eyed look.
"I can see where she's coming from. I worked with assholes practically my whole career." Carley says, defending her. She gives a look of condescendance.
"See?" Tavia says.
"Still, there are good people in this world, and there were before. Not too sure if I agree with what the man did. He could have just kicked him out." Carley argues.
"That would have been much worse. So much worse." Tavia replies.
"Eh.." Eddie waves his hand, unsure.
Tavia looks at him. "You really think he'd make it out there? Bill did him a favor. This place is much safer than anywhere out there."
"We're still alive and we've never been here before." Lee says.
"Yeah, well Bill sees something in you. Something that reminds him of himself. That's the only other way you could have made it this far; if you were as tough as him. Criticize him all you'd like, he makes sacrifices to himself and others to protect us, to protect people here who deserve to be protected. I'm sure you did the same thing."
It dawns on Lee that she might just be right. He feels uncomfortable. "...I'm gonna go. I'll talk to you later." he says, looking at Carley.
"If you play your cards right." Tavia mutters. He raises a brow at her, she shrugs at him and goes back to staring out into the woods.
"Stay safe, babe." Carley says, pulling him into a hug.
"Yeah, will do." He leaves, waving goodbye to Chuck and Carley. Danny gives him a sad puppy dog look on his way out. Lee spends a few seconds trying to peg the look, but ultimately leaves before he can figure it out. Danny sighs.
Carver and Clementine are waiting for Lee by the time he comes down to the food court. "Ah, there you are." Carver greets, his hands on his hips. "Armory folk are doing well. How's watch?"
"The walkers are still wandering around the woods, but they're gonna hit us, Bill. Today." Lee answers. Carver sighs, looking down before looking back into his eyes.
"..Alright. I'm gonna go speak to Wyatt. You two see Duck and Sarita over there." He points to the parent and child, the former mopping while the latter tries to wipe down a table in clear pain. Lee winces.
"Will do." He cautiously says. Bill nods and leaves to see his underling. Lee kneels down to Clem's height. "You can stay here if it's too much, honey. I'll understand."
"I'll… I'll be okay. You can trust me."
"I trust you, of course I do. I'm just-"
"Lee, I'm not a kid anymore, remember?"
"...Of course. Come on, sweet pea." They begin to walk over, and on their way they get spotted by Sarita. She immediately drops the mop and stands in front of Duck with her arms wide in a wall stance. Duck notices too, standing tall with a nasty, mean look on his face directed at Clementine. She folds her arms guiltily, looking away.
"No. I won't let you hurt him again." The poor woman shudders as she speaks.
"Sarita, please. We're not here to do anything to Duck." Lee protests, raising his hand in defense.
"You mean not again." Duck coldly states.
"I was doing what I could to protect both of us. If I hadn't done something, Carver would have done something worse. I did you a favor." Clem replies, walking forward, prompting Sarita to get even more defensive.
"You keep telling yourself that. Just stay away." Duck says with venom in his voice, ignoring her.
"Clementine.. I know it must have been hard, but you hurt someone I'm supposed to be protecting. I cannot allow you to hurt him or come near him until he is comfortable with you again." Sarita says as softly as she can. Clem breaks down, her face flushing red with tears threatening to spill. Lee puts an arm on her shoulder.
"How's cleaning coming along?" He tries to change the subject.
"Fine. I don't like this, though. None of us want to be here after what that mad man did to Matthew and Duck. Are we leaving tonight, Lee?" Sarita questions.
"I'm not sure yet. We may-"
"I.. I'm not going to hurt you again! We're friends, I like you, Duck!" Clem desperately exclaims, reaching out for him. Duck turns, glaring.
"What if Carver scares you into it?" He pushes past Sarita, shocking her.
"What?" Clem questions shakily.
"What if he scares you into beating me again? You think I LIKE looking like this?!" He points at his bruised and disfigured face.
"Of course not! I'm so sorry, but we both know-"
"You don't know shit!" Duck blurts out, his right eyelid throbbing. Sarita gasps, everyone else around him gasps. They've never heard him swear before.
"Duck!" Sarita scolds. He turns around and shoves her. It doesn't do much.
"Stop calling me that stupid nickname! Ken, Jr. is fine! I'm not a kid either, and I'd like all of you to stop treating me like one! I know how to shoot a gun, I know how to handle myself, so stop shitting on me like I'm a dumb baby! I'm older than this dumb baby, that's for sure!" He points at Clem as if he wanted her head to explode right then and there. She swallows her tears and balls her hands into fists.
Carver notices the commotion along with Wyatt, both of them turning their heads. Lee notices. Maybe he should do something, or maybe he should stay out of this. Maybe he should think like Carver. Maybe he should get Clem out of there. He didn't like that look in her eye, or that look in his.
