AN: Animeguy1101 - Sorry about that! Normally I try to keep the focus on Himiko + her circle of friends to avoid the OC overload, but it was kind of hard to pull off with the Sports Festival! Most of 2-A and half of 2-B will fade back into the sidelines after this.
As for Himiko's quirk, yes it works differently. I'll explain at the end of the chapter.
James Birdsong - Thanks!
Emily was a blushing mess as Himiko grabbed her arm.
Maybe I should have eased off on the vampire thing. Then again, she's been super confusing lately, so it's only fair!
Himiko bit into her wrist and drank several mouthfuls of blood, before she pulled out an alcohol wipe and a band-aid.
"Thanks Emmy!" Himiko smiled as she patched up her friend.
"I-it's nothing." Emily responded, trying to hide her embarrassment. "You'd better win though! It would be super embarrassing if Fuwa wins while you were transformed into me! She wouldn't let me live it down!"
Himiko laughed. "Maybe I'll lose on purpose then."
"Don't you dare!" Emily looked offended by the suggestion.
Himiko offered her a predatory smile. "Don't worry, I plan on winning!"
Himiko stood up and said goodbye to her friends, before heading off to the locker room.
She knew that Fuwa would be a difficult opponent to beat. The biggest advantage Emily actually had against her was that her quirk was useful in breaking up her fog cloud, limiting Fuwa's ability to move around inside of it. Himiko just hoped that she could accomplish the same thing. She doubted that she had the precision necessary to restrict Fuwa completely, so she was going to have to rely on her training to catch her. Unfortunately Himiko never faced her in quirkless combat, so she didn't know much about the other girl's combat style beyond her hit and run tactics.
The good news was that she had spent a lot of time learning how to use her keen senses even when she was transformed. And she had spent a lot of time as Emily over the past year, if only because the other girl hated it.
When she was called into the arena, Himiko saw Fuwa was already standing there with her arms crossed.
Fuwa's lips turned into a confident smirk. "That's a nice trick you've learned. You're still going down."
Himiko responded with a grin of her own. "Oh, I'd like to see you try."
"Who are you going to copy to try and stop me?"
"You'll find out soon!"
Midnight looked between the two, and raised her microphone. "Begin!"
Himiko activated her quirk, transforming into Emily. She saw recognition on Fuwa's face as she realized what her plan was.
"Of course! You would use her quirk."
"Yep! Emmy's gonna help me win!"
"So if I beat you, I get to hold it over her? Even more incentive to win!"
Fuwa then began filling the arena with her fog. Himiko looked down at her hands. It took her a second, but she smiled when she saw a small orb of light appear in her right hand. Concentrating some more, she managed to make it grow in size until it was almost the size of a softball, then she aimed the orb towards the growing fog bank.
"Here goes nothing!"
The bolt shot forward, like an arrow. Watching, Himiko saw the orb burn a hole into the fog, leaving a clean gap behind, until wispy tendrils began filling the space.
"That was easy!" Himiko said excitedly.
Mimicking Emily, she began using her quirk with both hands, alternating between the two, and began filling the fog bank with holes. She had seen Emily fight Fuwa enough to know what her strategy was. Despite being merged with the fog, Fuwa still had to have enough space to maneuver while inside the fog bank. By tearing holes into it, Himiko was able to restrict her movement, minimizing possible avenues of attack.
It didn't take long until she felt a tingling sensation on the back of her neck, only for Fuwa to kick her from behind a moment later. Leaning into it, Himiko managed to tuck into a roll, using the momentum to gain some space, before springing back up to a standing position and firing two bolts behind her. It didn't matter, of course, because Fuwa was already gone.
Unable to see her opponent, Himiko resumed tearing holes in the fog. She knew Fuwa was trying to replenish the fog when possible, but there were practical limits to how much fog she could generate. From experience, Himiko knew that Emily was easily able to surpass those limits, especially in an open air arena.
The only doubt tugging in Himiko's mind was if her transformation would last long enough. While the amount of blood she drank would normally let her remain as Emily for a few hours, she didn't know if that was different now.
Himiko was forming a bolt when she felt the tingling sensation again. Without thinking her instincts took over and she closed her hand into a fist, her hand burning as she spun around and punched Fuwa in the chest, sending her flying back.
"Ow, look at what you made me do!" Himiko complained.
Looking down at her hand, she saw it was raw and blistering, with black marks on her fingertips. Even though she also acquired some of Emily's natural heat resistance, that obviously didn't work when she grabbed a miniature sun and held onto it.
Fortunately for her, Fuwa also was hurt by the bolt, if the scorch mark on her uniform was any indication. Rather than try standing up, she simply glared at Himiko and melded back with the fog.
At that moment, Himiko realized something very important. Fuwa was fighting her like she would fight Emily! Emily was predominately a ranged hero, and her close combat skills were lacking. While she was planning on improving her melee skills this year, Fuwa's hit and run style was actually a decent counter, if she could wear Emily down fast enough.
Fuwa hadn't changed her tactics to adjust to the fact she was fighting Himiko yet.
Grinning, Himiko continued to tear away at the fog bank, letting her training warn her when Fuwa was approaching, allowing her to dodge or counter her opponent.
Eventually Fuwa realized her mistake, and began changing up her style, shifting from her hit and run tactics to a more direct engagement, using the fog to quickly jump around her opponent. Himiko responded by using her vanishing technique, the two dancing around each other, seeking to find any advantage.
Unfortunately for Fuwa, their fighting was disrupting the fog surrounding them, causing it to dissipate. Worse, Fuwa was beginning to reach her limits, unable to replenish the fog fast enough. Using Emily's quirk in between attacks, she began filling the fog with holes, evading her opponent as she tried to take away her primary advantage.
Knowing she only had a brief opportunity, Himiko grabbed Fuwa and swung her around, pulling her out of the fog bank. With a feral grin, she adjusted her grip, and threw Fuwa out of the ring.
"Midoriya wins!"
Himiko dropped her transformation and stepped out of the fading fog bank, smiling at the crowd. She looked over to where her classmates were sitting, and could see Emily's self-satisfied smile from here.
Himiko returned to her friends, and saw that Emily had already left for her match.
The group watched as their friend and classmate both walked onto the field, ready for the final match of the top four. They weren't sure what to expect. If Emily went all out she could win. At maximum power, her bolts would do enough damage to overload Kenji's super-regeneration, and it would take the boy up to a minute to recover fully. It was simply a question of how much Emily cared about appearances.
"Begin!"
The crowd watched as Emily began the match by firing a barrage of her light bolts at Kenji, leaving burn marks along both of his legs. The boy stumbled and fell to his knees, but as the crowd watched the wounds faded, his skin rapidly healing as his quirk repaired the wounds. He stood up, and said something to his opponent before charging at her, sending her flying with a punch.
Emily hopped back to her feet, and tried a different strategy. She waited for Kenji to get close before she used her light arrows, trying to hurt his arm enough that he couldn't use it, attempting to give herself an opening that she could use. It didn't work, and Kenji managed to fight through the attack, simply opting to slam into her instead, once again knocking her back.
Everyone in the stadium watched in silence, waiting to see if the girl could find some way to defeat her opponent.
In the stands, Himiko couldn't help but stare as she watched Emily getting thrown around the arena by Kenji. No matter how many times Kenji would try knocking her out of the arena, she would catch herself and stand up.
"You can pick your jaw up off the floor, Himiko."
Himiko felt the blush spreading across her face. "S-Shut up Tomoe!"
Tomore giggled. "Seriously though, what is up with you? You haven't been acting this way towards Emily before."
Himiko sighed. "I don't know." She bit her lip. "She's just so confusing recently! And my quirk isn't helping."
"Your quirk?"
Himiko found her blush deepening as she hung her head. "Y-yeah. Just like your quirk can overwhelm you? Mine can mess with my emotions - when blood is involved."
"I didn't know that."
"It's super embarrassing so I don't talk about it."
"I see."
"This is the second time I've seen her stubborn determination and my quirk is shoving these stupid feelings onto me."
"Are you sure that it's your quirk?"
Himiko turned to stare at her friend incredulously. "What else could it be?"
Tomoe gave her a flat stare. "I don't know, how about you could actually be developing feelings for her?"
Himiko's eyes grew wide. "For her? No way!"
Tomoe frowned. "Why not?"
"Because she's so proud and stubborn! And aggravating!"
"You have to admit, she has come a long way since last year."
Himiko crossed her arms and turned away. "Oh please. If she actually felt that way about me do you seriously think she would be this confusing? That's not like her at all."
She felt Tomoe's hand on her arm. "Maybe she's just as confused as you are."
Himiko laughs. "Her? Confused? Never."
Tomoe merely hummed in response, but dropped the subject as the pair returned to watching the match.
As the match went on, the crowd grew more concerned as they saw Emily slowing down, the effects of being tossed around the arena catching up to her.
For those who knew her, they noticed something else. The American was holding back. She was limiting the strength of her arrows, and it was preventing her from posing a serious challenge to Kenji. Even though he could take it, his super-regeneration healing his wounds, she was acting as if he was a typical foe she would face.
As long as she refused to use her full strength, the results were a foregone conclusion. She was just delaying the inevitable, until Kenji was finally able to defeat her. He finally did so when he pushed her to the edge of the arena, and grabbed her, finally getting a proper grip on his opponent. With a roar, he lifted Emily up and threw her out of the ring, where she crashed into the grass with a dull thud.
"Ryo Wins!"
Midnight walks over to their giant classmate and raises his arm, but Himiko wasn't focused on that. She was too focused on her friend. Emily lay face down on the grass, unmoving, a pair of robots coming to put her on a stretcher.
Himiko felt Tomoe shove her shoulder. "You should go."
Himiko didn't need to be told twice. She was off, racing down to Recovery Girl's temporary office.
As she walked in she saw Recovery Girl using her quirk on Emily, the blonde girl beginning to stir, her eyes opening.
"Mmm, there's a face I wouldn't mind waking up to."
Himiko found herself blushing. "You must have hit your head harder than I realized."
Emily's eyes went wide as she realized what happened. "Himi! What are you doing here?"
"I'm checking on you, you idiot!"
"What happened?"
"You tell me! What was that?"
Emily looked away from Himiko. "I didn't deserve to win."
"So you just threw the fight? You could have walked out of the arena and saved everyone the trouble!"
"You know I couldn't do that!" Emily cried in defiance, before shrinking in on herself. "But you and Habiki were right. After the second round, I don't deserve to win. I abandoned you all to chase after my own selfish desires. And then Atsuko hurt herself because of me. She was pushing herself to not disappoint Tomoe, when it was my fault that we didn't all make it in. After that - I don't feel particularly heroic."
Himiko slapped her.
"Emily Song, I can't believe you! This is the second time today you've been a complete and selfish idiot!" Himiko yelled. "After you tell me that my feelings matter, you go and act like nobody's feelings matter but yours!"
"Himi…" Emily looked at her friend, her hand touching where Himiko had struck on her cheek.
"Don't! Just don't! You should have given it your all! How do you think our friends are going to feel, knowing you did that?" Himiko paused, taking a couple deep breaths to calm herself down. "Now if you will excuse me, I have a tournament to win. I was excited to face you in the finals, but I guess that's not happening."
Himiko walked over to Recovery Girl, blushing profusely as she was scolded, before she convinced the school nurse to let her have an empty syringe. As she was leaving, she stole one last glance back at the bed, and saw Emily staring down at the floor.
Stupid Emily. Why are you like this?
With a sigh she shoved those thoughts aside. She knew that she would have to deal with them, but she didn't have time right now. She had a match to win! At least Kenji's a good sport about it when Himiko unfairly takes out her aggression on him.
Class 1-A was talking amongst themselves when Himiko came flying into the stands, running to where Ochako was sitting with her friends.
"Uraraka, I need some of your blood!"
A few of her classmates looked at Himiko in horror, while Izuku was rolling his eyes.
"Himi, you know you can't just spring that question on people!"
"Don't care, no time!" Himiko stopped in front of Ochako. "Kenji's Super-Regeneration means there's no way I am taking him in a straight fight. I would know! Your quirk would be perfect though!"
Ochako's face lit up in understanding. "I get it. Just like that Nomu at USJ! You want to use my quirk to toss him out of the arena instead?"
Himiko gave her a huge grin. "Yep!"
Izuku gave Ochako an encouraging smile. "It would give you a chance to show off your quirk? Even if Himi's the one using it, your face and quirk will still be seen in the final match!"
Ochako looked back and forth between the two, debating the options. Realizing that it was almost all positive, she took a deep breath and nodded.
"Ok, you can have some of my blood. How does this work?"
Himiko smiled as she held up a syringe. "Don't worry, I'm really good at this."
For the final time, Himiko walks out onto the field, head held high. Before, she stood no chance against Kenji, but now things were different, and she was going to get her first win against him! And it would even be broadcast everywhere!
When she stood on the field she flashed a toothy grin to the crowd and waved.
Kenji came onto stage next, walking to his starting position. "You ready to lose Midoriya?"
"Did you take too many hits today, or did you miss it?"
Kenji smiled back at her. "Oh I know what you can do now. I just don't think you found a quirk that can stop me."
Himiko's grin morphed into a predatory smile. "I guess we'll see, won't we?"
Midnight smiled. "Oh my, our finalists are fired up! We have Midoriya's surprising flexibility going against the unstoppable wall that is Ryo's super regeneration. Who will win it all? We're about to find out! Begin!"
Kenji began by bull rushing Himiko, who activated her quirk, transforming into Ochako. She grinned as Kenji recognized the danger - he was paying attention and saw the girl using her quirk to great effect yesterday, after all.
Himiko tried to reach out and touch Kenji, but he managed to dodge at the last moment, avoiding her grasp. He threw a wild swing as he ran past her, managing to clip her shoulder, but it wasn't enough to slow her down.
She pivoted to face him. Now it was her turn. Rushing in, she held out her hand - all she needed to do was to touch him with all five fingers and she won. Kenji used his reach to his advantage, knocking her away before she was able to make contact.
Himiko mentally cursed. She was distracted, and made the mistake of thinking she could move the way she normally did while transformed. But she hasn't spent any time as Ochako yet, and so wasn't used to her body. She would have to adjust her strategy.
The two continued playing a game of keep away for several more minutes, with Kenji preventing Himiko from making contact. For the first time in the tournament, Kenji felt like he was at a disadvantage. This was an opponent where he couldn't just outlast with his quirk. And due to Ochako's quirk being a contact-based quirk, he couldn't just grab Himiko and throw her around like he normally would. It opened him up to letting her touch him, and that would be it. So he was forced to rely on punches, and hoped he could land one that either sent her out of the ring or made her go unconscious.
And with every attack, Himiko was learning. The longer she was transformed into Ochako, the more comfortable she felt fighting in her borrowed form.
Finally, she did it. She managed to lay a hand on Kenji, and he became momentarily disoriented as he felt Ochako's quirk activate and remove his gravity.
"Got you!" She smiled in satisfaction, using the same hand to push him away from her.
Kenji tried to flail around, but he floated away helplessly. From his position he didn't have anything he could grab onto and use as leverage, and a few seconds later he had floated outside of the arena.
Himiko's smile split her face as she was looking at him, putting her hands together. "Release!"
Kenji felt his gravity suddenly return and he landed on the ground with a thud.
"What an exciting twist! Instead of trying to overpower Kenji, Midoriya chose a quirk that would make it easy to remove him from the ring. How clever! Midoriya wins!" Midnight calls out, walking towards Himiko.
Himiko dropped her transformation, standing there in disbelief as Midnight raised her arm in the air. She had done it! She had actually won the sports festival!
She really did have the best quirk.
Without having to wait for repairs, after the match Midnight led both of the finalists down underneath the stadium to prepare for the awards ceremony.
Himiko knew she was getting close when she heard Emily, who was already bickering with Fuwa. Deciding that now was not the time, she didn't even bother acknowledging the two, instead walking directly to the first place podium and climbing on top of it.
"Did something happen?" Kenji asked as he climbed into position on the second place platform.
Himiko frowned and indicated the direction where Emily was still arguing.
"Try not to let it get you down. You earned this. And I'm not saying that just because that means we can ease up on your knife training."
That got Himiko to laugh. "Are you kidding? I'm going to need to learn all new knife skills after this!"
Kenji gave an exaggerated groan. "Please no!"
"Shut up! I know you can take worse!"
"I guess that means I just have to train even harder against you." Kenji smiled at her.
Himiko smiled back. "Fine by me!"
Midnight called for attention, and Himiko noticed that the teacher had managed to herd Emily and Fuwa onto the third place podium. Midnight gave the group basic instructions about the ceremony, before they were joined by All Might, and the stage began rising.
As she was raised into the arena, Himiko could hear the crowd cheering, and felt her smile growing. She made sure that everyone could see her fangs - she wanted everyone who had a blood-based quirk to know that she won. She waved to the crowd, until they quieted down, and the ceremony began.
After handing medals out to the other finalists, All Might stood in front of her, holding her medal. "Young Midoriya. I must admit, you surprised all of us today, when you unlocked the hidden potential contained within your quirk. You then went on to impress everyone by quickly harnessing that new power, and showing us that even with a quirk that isn't traditionally seen as heroic, you deserve to be standing here, just as much as any of your classmates."
"Thank you, All Might!"
All Might put the medal on her neck and stood back, presenting the second year winners of the sports festival to the world.
Himiko felt the tears welling up. Looking at the stands, she saw Izuku, a look of pride on his face. It filled her with warmth.
With Himiko's unexpected win, and Emily placing in the top four, what was going to be a small gathering turned into an impromptu party, with all of her friends, as well as Emily's parents, making the decision to go back to the Midoriyas' apartment to celebrate. Himiko tried to protest, but Atsuko betrayed her and called Inko, getting her permission.
When they got back to the apartment, the Songs were confused as everyone stopped at the door, waiting for Himiko to open the door and go in. She barely had time to step inside the apartment before she felt Inko crashing into her, wrapping her arms around her. Somehow, Inko managed the impressive feat of crying even more heavily than she did yesterday.
"That's my girl! I'm so proud of you!"
Himiko broke down hearing the pure joy in her mom's voice, wrapping her arms around her. Even though she knew Inko had accepted her as her own daughter, she enjoyed moments like this, moments which reinforced that fact for her.
"Thanks mom. I never could have done it without your support."
Eventually the two cleared out of the entranceway, making room for everyone else to come inside.
The guests have been warned that even with the crowd, the Midoriya family traditions were not to be broken. They would be watching the sports festival again, before they would celebrate properly. Once inside, Izuku and Habiki gathered every chair they could from the apartment, crowding them around the television.
While Inko was in the kitchen preparing drinks with the Songs, the seven students were in the living room talking amongst themselves. As she was talking to Izuku, Himiko felt Emily grab her arm.
"Himi, can we talk?"
Himiko felt a twisting in her gut. Part of her wanted to just ignore what happened, but she knew that confronting it now was for the best. Nodding, she began leading her friend to her bedroom so they could have some privacy.
In a lonely apartment, a young man was watching the awards ceremony of the sports festival. When All Might was giving the medal to the winning second year student, he noticed something familiar about her.
"Wait, is that…" He leaned in to get a closer look, eyes going wide in recognition.
Even though her hair was a different color, he could never forget that face.
"It's her!" He practically growled. "First she ruins my life, and now they dare to put her on a pedestal and call her a promising young hero!"
Raising his hand in anger he shot a blast of energy at the TV, blowing a hole through it and slamming its shattered remains against the back wall of the apartment.
AN: Well, that's a wrap for the sports festival! The primary lesson I have learned from writing these last three chapters - it turns out that a lot of cool ideas for quirks that could be really useful for a hero? They really really suck in 1 on 1 exhibition matches in a flat open arena.
Time for the kids to have a nice relaxing break. I am only a little bit sorry for putting Himiko through an emotional rollercoaster. It's been a pretty big day for her.
To explain how Himidoriya's quirk works now: It operates differently due to her being in a better place, mentally, then Toga. When transformed she also copies the person's quirk (same rules as Monoma - no cheating and making a second copy of Rewind or OFA) but unlike Monoma, she doesn't get the "instructions" on how to use it. As of right now that means she can only use about 10-12 quirks between family/friends and classmates due to her closeness to them, which allowed her to subconsciously pick up enough to use their quirk. But if she transforms into a random person on the street, she can't just start using their quirk.
The one exception is quirks with blood-based activation conditions (ex: Stain). Since those quirks have the same activation condition as Transform, she gets a free pass on using those.
