"What do you mean you can't use your powers on her? Did you try?!"
"Yes, I tried! What do you think I was trying to do, the macarena?"
The newborn snarls as the two argue over something she doesn't understand. A smooth hand covers the jagged dip from her bite as the blonde leans against a tree. There is snow and dirt in frizzled hair and she doesn't hide her smirk. "Don't even think about letting her go, Kate." The blonde, Irina says with a pointed look and she bares her teeth in retaliation.
Onyx eyes narrow before Irina looks away with a glance at the chunk of flesh in her hand and with a sharp inhale and speed that leaves no hesitation, she presses the missing piece into place with a hiss through clenched teeth. An unfamiliar word leaves her mouth as she closes her eyes and leans her head back against the tree.
The sudden sound of glass healings its cracks makes the newborn grind her teeth. It may be only seconds but it echoes in her ears and a surprised hiss comes out.
"Hey, hey easy." The pressure against her neck vanishes with the words and she closes her eyes. "Take a breath."
She shakes her head, either to knock the echo of sound out of her mind or to deny the blonde's words she doesn't know. "Take a breath for me." The command is a soft whisper that tickles past her ear and the urge suddenly grows in her chest like it's a need she can't live without.
The blonde's grip around her loosens just a fraction and that's all it seems she needs as she sucks in a breath that's all heat and summer and her muscles relax without thought. Instinctually she pushes back against the blonde, another breath filling her lungs.
"That's it, in and out. Good girl."
The goosebumps that ghost over the back of her neck are a surprising sensation and she swallows down the burning in her throat. The ache that's settled into her jaw has only increased with the ghost of adrenaline and instinctual rage.
She releases another breath before she opens her eyes to be met with snow covered ground. The disturbance from the fight is evident. Her eyes catch sight of grooves from a crooked and broken tree branch that's snapped in half, the ends splintered and broken. The specks that make up flecks of dirt and snow, the touch of snowflakes reaching the ground.
One last breath leaves her as a slow shift of eyes up causes her gaze to lock on the other blonde, Irina she reminds herself, who is now fixing her jacket. The grimace on her face seems permanent.
A growl steadily grows as her glare tries to burn through the blonde. "Easy." The one word warning tickles her ear and arms tighten around her to get the point across.
She raises her chin in a challenge when Irina shakes her shoulders as if that will make the roughness of her clothes disappear. Irina takes a step forward and pins the newborn with a glare. "I think we should kill her."
The newborn snarls at the suggestion, her muscles suddenly tight with tension as she aims the lunge at the blonde, instances demanding a fight that will leave her teeth in smooth skin.
But in a flash of movement so fast she lets out a gasp of surprise, she's pinned to the ground. Her chin digging into the snow and a weight against her back that holds her in place.
She hisses, the action causes a flutter of snow in the path of her growing panic. She struggles, snarls as she tries to shift her weight and push against the body pinning her down. But the grip holding her only tightens the more she fights.
"I think she wants to kill you, sis." Kate's response is followed by a raise of an eyebrow as she leans forward slightly, her hands pushing against the taut muscles of the newborn's shoulders in a show of control.
A growl greets her from both the newborn and her coven mate, "Let her try." Irina huffs and folds her arms over her chest. "Careful Irina, it seems pretty clear that she wants to tear you to pieces. You've got a new scar to prove that."
The warning in her words is clear and Irina nods after a mute second. "And yet she shows less aggression towards you, does she already have favorites?" The question is rhetorical but that means little to Kate, who responds with a glint in her eyes. "She has fantastic taste."
"You mean she smells fantastic," Irina nods at the newborn, and Kate's gaze shifts down. She runs her thumb along the inside of a shoulder blade, pushing against the soft skin under the thin shirt. A strangled mix between a whine and a growl leaves the newborn underneath her.
"She smells like," The blonde pauses and takes an unnecessary breath before continuing. "A newborn." A whisper of home stays on her tongue as she lifts her gaze to her coven mate.
"Well, what should we do with her?" Irina asks as her gaze lands on the newborn. "Obviously her maker is nowhere to be seen."
"Such a big bad newborn all by herself." Kate thinks out loud as her index and middle finger run along the space between shoulders.
A weak growl trails into a hiss as she tightens her grip. "Kate," Her eyes shift up and Irina is giving her a look. "Don't tease the newborn."
...
An accidental glance up causes the curiosity in her bones to grow and her steps to halt. Her eyes are trained towards the sky, the few clouds that are barely visible are moving at a crawl across, a single bird glides through the breeze before it vanishes behind a cloud.
The fascination she feels at the sight that greets her is strange. A mundane view is seen with new eyes and for a brief moment is analyzed with wonder and curiosity.
The faded blue of the sky, the visual softness of the clouds, the faint whispers of movement above her, it feels like long seconds of serenity. Everything else fades around her until there is just the blue of the sky.
A soft featherlight touch that traces the back of her hand brings her crashing down and her attention snaps like a coil as she turns, a snarl on the tip of her tongue.
"Easy, kitten." Kate, with a soft glint in onyx eyes that bleed aurum, says in a whisper as if not to startle her even more.
After a second that feels like half of eternity, eyes shift down and her gaze follows.
She blinks once, twice, but what she's looking at doesn't change. Her hand is wrapped around Kate's wrist in a vise-like grip that looks tight enough to bruise, to break. Her fingers flex against marble skin that doesn't buckle under her strength.
Unconsciously, or maybe not quite, she brushes a finger over smooth skin. A hint of warmth seeps into her as she hears a whisper of a sigh.
Her eyes trail up and soon she's staring again because the absence of gold greets her, eyes as dark as midnight stare back at her.
A pale path of freckles paints across cheeks and a nose in a streak, and she wonders just how many the blonde wears on her skin.
A whisper of a breath leaves her lungs as her eyes lower to slightly upturned lips that urge her forward, taunting her into a step that would bring her closer.
"Kate," The sharp tone tenses her muscles and she pulls her lips into a snarl as she glances off in the other blonde's direction. A steady defensive growl fills the air, the moment shattered.
An unconscious step full of protectiveness causes the small upturn of lips to form into a tender smile on Kate's face. She turns her wrist in the loose enough hold to grab onto the newborn's wrist as well. Her eyes flicker over to Irina, who's glaring at their new companion with a suspicion that tethers on disdain.
"Don't be jealous Irina," Kate teases lightly as her index finger runs over the still pulse point on the newborn's inner wrist. Her proclaimed sister lets out a scoff as she folds her arms and doesn't relent her glare.
"I don't like this idea of yours," Irina says and Kate nods a little in understanding, it's not an ideal response to finding a newborn, maybe days after waking up from the change.
But she won't let Irina kill her, and the only other responsible response is to introduce her into their coven and see what Tanya's choice will be.
"Trust my judgment as I trust yours." Her tone is sober and her gaze serious as she watches her coven mate who gives her a nod after a moment.
"Tanya will kick your ass for bringing a newborn home," Irina responds after a beat and that earns a smirk from the blonde. "Only if she can catch me."
Irina shakes her head at the comment from her coven mate as a soft breeze brushes past the three, stirring fragments of snow and heavy limbed tree branches.
"We should get going before she decides to get her appetite back." Irina motions to the newborn who's yet to relent her daggered glare.
"Also your newborn needs a bath." The after comment doesn't quite catch her by surprise unlike the fracture of a movement that causes her caress to turn into a tight grip.
A chuckle leaves Kate as she narrows her eyes at Irina, "My newborn?" She asks with a raised eyebrow and the other blonde merely smirks as she responds. "She's staked her claim on you sis," The last word is said mockingly and her plans for revenge are already in place.
"Just wait," She points at Irina, a determined gleam in her eyes. "I will zap you and you won't even see it coming."
"Sure okay. I'll wait." The blonde says with a smirk as if she knows that it wont happen any time soon.
