Chapter 1:
Mini Golf

[Party Selected: Chloe, Indy]
[Current World: Bonegea]
[Current Location: ʻīlio Hotel, Kid's Area]

[BGM: Asu01 - The Beach]

It was the first day of Indy and Chloe's vacation, and they were eager to start trying things out. After putting their stuff away and changing into 'holiday wear' (funny hats, cameras, and socks with sandals, according to what Bluey told them), they set out to the hotel. Now they were in the kids' area while Indy's mom and sister were at the nearby spa.

"Oooo!" said Chloe, snapping pictures with her camera. "There's so many things to do!"

"Mum said we have to stay here until she and my sister come back from the spa," said Indy, "so what should we do first?" The two puppies looked around for things to do. In one corner, a lady was teaching kids how to hula dance. "Oh! Hula!" said Indy.

Chloe looked at the sign nearby. "Aw, we need dollarbucks to get in," she said. Her eyes turned to another corner where some other kids were playing in water spouts. "Oh! Water area!"

"Our socks might get wet, though," said Indy, and the two stuck their feet out. Looking around one more time, they finally found something that they could do: "Mini golf!"

"Oh! Mini golf!" said Chloe, nodding. "And your mum has a clear view of us!" The two puppies shouted "Hooray!" and ran to get some clubs and balls.

Shortly thereafter, the two were at the first hole. Naturally, it wasn't too tricky, simply being a wide area with a fake sand pit. "Have you ever played mini golf before?" asked Indy as Chloe set herself up.

"Mmm…no," Chloe admitted. "But I've seen real golf on TV!" Racking her brain for what to do, the dalmatian gripped her club, swung it high over her shoulder, and yelled "Fore!" She swung the ball with more might than was necessary, and it went clean into the bushes. "Aw! I lost my ball already!"

"I don't think you're supposed to swing so hard," said Indy, setting up her own ball. "I think you have to do it more like this!" She raised her club up halfway and hit her ball, which rolled about halfway across the course before setting down near the green. "Uss!" she exclaimed, pumping her fist.

"Nice one, Indy!" Chloe congratulated. "Do you think I should go find my ball now?"

"Oh, don't bother! They get lost in the bushes easily!" a new voice said. Indy and Chloe turned around to find a brown-furred Portuguese water dog wearing a bone necklace standing at the front of the course. A taller, orange-furred one wearing a pearl necklace stood next to him.

"Hi there!" said Chloe, waving. "I'm Chloe, and this is my best friend Indy!"

"Aloha!" said the new dog. "I'm Nohea, and this is my sister Lani!" Lani waved hello. "She's watching me while my mom and dad work!"

"Would you like me to get you a spare ball?" Lani asked Chloe, and the dalmatian nodded. "Stay here, Nohea."

Chloe smiled. "That's a nice name, Nohea," she said.

"It's Hawaiian for handsome," explained Nohea. "Where in Australia are you from?"

"Um…definitely Queensland. Brisbane, I think," said Indy. "Wait, how did you know we were from Australia?"

Nohea chuckled. "We get a lot of Australians. I pick up the accent easily." Just then, Lani returned with a new ball for Chloe. "So, would you like to try hitting again?"

"Sure!" said Chloe. She set her ball near where her old ball fell and aimed for the hole. "How did you swing it, Indy? Like this?" She tried imitating the way Indy swung.

"Yep! Just like that!" said Indy with a thumbs-up.

"But do it a little lower!" called Lani. Obliging, Chloe tried swinging her club lower than what she previously did. The ball rolled past Indy's ball, hit the wall, then went straight into the hole.

"Yes! Hole in two!" she cried, jumping up and down.

"Let's see if I can match that!" said Indy, walking up to her ball. She aimed, swung slightly lower, and sure enough… "Yes! Hole in two!"

"Nice one!" said Nohea. "But I can do a hole in one!" He set his ball down and focused. Paying attention to the direction his ball would go, he focused his swing and let the ball roll across the field. And sure enough…

"Hole in one!" Indy and Chloe gasped. The two applauded for Nohea as he got his ball out of the hole.

"Thank you very much," he said, nodding. "I know this hole's layout like the back of my hand, but the other holes I still need to work on!"

After that, Indy and Chloe turned to the next hole. "Hey! This one has a big hill!" said Chloe, walking to the starting point.

"Maybe swing just a little bit harder on this one," recommended Indy. Focusing, Chloe bent down and swung the club with a bit more might. Her ball successfully made it over the hill and rolled to the other side. "Yes! You made it!" Indy then went and tried to make it over, swinging her club with more might than before. "Come on, come on…" she gritted as her ball inched closer and closer to the top. Unfortunately, it wasn't hit hard enough and rolled all the way back down the hill. "Ohhhh…biscuits!"

"Yeah, I have trouble sometimes, too," said Nohea. "But it's important not to give up!"

Chloe walked across the hill to the other side. "Hey! My ball's nearly in!" She cried. She eagerly focused on the hole as she hit her ball…but the ball passed right by the hole! "Beans on toast!"

"That can happen too, sometimes!" said Lani, chuckling. "It can get pretty annoying!"

It was Indy's turn again. The afghan hound gripped her club hard and looked at the ball. Don't give up, she told herself, then she swung it just a teensy bit harder than last time. Sadly, it simply wasn't meant to be and the ball rolled back down. "Creamed cabbage!" she shouted, stamping her foot.

"Don't worry! I'm sure you'll get it next time!" called Chloe. She focused on getting her ball into the hole once more…but again, it went right past it. This time she just tugged on her ears in rage.

Nohea walked up to Indy. "Here's something that I think helps my parents sometimes," he said. "They take a deep breath before they do something hard. They call it a cleansing breath."

Deciding to give it a try, Indy breathed in, counted to five, and then breathed out. Okay, now I'm ready, she thought. She focused on the ball one more time and gave it as mighty of a swing as she could without sending the ball flying. She gripped her necklace and started to anxiously toy with it as the ball inched closer and closer to the top. And then, like a miracle, the ball successfully rolled to the other side and hit Chloe's ball, which then made it into the hole. "Yes! I made it!" cried Indy.

"And my ball made it in, too!" cried Chloe. Indy ran over the hill to her own ball and easily hit it right into the hole.

"Uss!" Indy cried again. As she picked up her ball, she noticed Chloe was looking red from anger, no doubt from how easily Indy's ball made it into the hole. "Hey, cleansing breath!" said Indy. She directed Chloe to breath in with her, hold for five seconds, and breathe out.

"Oh! That actually worked!" said Chloe. "Thanks, Indy!"

"Nohea taught me it, actually," said Indy, pointing to the water dog.

"It certainly helps before facing tricky situations!" said Nohea. He looked at his ball and swung his club, and like what happened with Indy, the ball failed at getting over the top and rolled back to the bottom of the hill. "Especially times like these!" he cried, and everyone laughed.

The rest of the game was relatively smooth from there. New obstacles began popping up, like swinging poles and several holes to put the ball, but Indy and Chloe remembered to never give up and take cleansing breaths here and there. And so, through all the trials, challenges, hardships, and food-related expletives they heard Bandit say whenever they went to the Heelers' house, the two and Nohea worked their way across the next six holes.

Finally, the group was at the last hole. A big statue of a dog wearing nothing but a red headband with a yellow circle on it and a red-and-yellow loincloth dominated over the final hole. Indy giggled at the sight. "What is that?" she asked.

"That's a menehune," explained Lani. "They're mythical Hawaiian creatures who love to play around."

"They say only kids and people related to them can see menehune," said Nohea, "but I haven't seen any besides what some of the workers here dress as."

Chloe faced the hole. It was just a straight shot. She could easily get a hole in one. In fact… "Let's all try to get a hole in one here!" she declared.

"Really? That seems like it could be tricky," said Indy.

"It doesn't look like it," Chloe argued, "but just to be safe…" She took one last cleansing breath and focused on the ball. She focused on the swing, hit the ball…and it went right into the hole in front of the menehune statue. "Yes! Hole in one!" she cried, running to get her ball. But when she looked inside, it was nowhere to be seen. "Hey! Where'd my ball go?"

"Since this is the last hole, it goes all the way back with the others!" explained Lani.

With that newfound knowledge, Indy took a cleansing breath of her own and looked at her ball. "This is our last shot, little ball," she said. "Don't fail me!" With that, she focused, swung, hit…and it too went into the hole. "Hole in one!"

"My turn!" said Nohea. He took a cleansing breath of his own, set his ball down, and focused. Just like with the two visitors, he successfully swung his club hard enough to knock the ball into the hole.

"WE ALL GOT HOLE IN ONES!" shouted Indy and Chloe. The two ran to Nohea and gave him a big hug, their tails wagging like crazy.

Back outside the course, the three returned their clubs and Lani snapped a picture of the three of them in front of the menehune statue. "It was very nice to meet you," said Nohea after the picture was taken. "How long are you staying for?"

"Oh, just a few days," said Indy. "We go back on Monday, I think."

"Maybe we'll see each other again," said Nohea. "My parents actually work here at the hotel!"

Chloe gasped. "You mean you live here in the hotel?"

"Yes! My parents run the tourist program, so I'd love to recommend some more things to do." Nohea looked at the cameras around the girls' necks. "I think a nature tour would be a good way to use those cameras."

"Hm, maybe," said Indy, considering the thought. Just then, she saw her mom waving to her. "Oh! My mum's back! We have to go!"

"See you tomorrow!" Chloe said to Nohea as she and Indy ran to join their guardian. Nohea waved backed, happy to have made new friends here at the hotel.

To be continued...and next time: what Bluey and Rusty are up to!

Next chapter: "Sand Castles" While Indy and Chloe are off in Hawaii, Bluey and Rusty are back in Brisbane, enjoying the beach without them! And no day at the beach is complete without making a sand castle...even if there's some competition to see who can make the best one!

Postface: Chapter complete! One rule I try to follow when making non-crossover Bluey fics is to make them seem like actual episodes of the show, and I think I accomplished this well.

Trivia time! The reason why I decided to have Indy and Chloe go to Hawaii without Bluey is because I felt like focusing on the two of them specifically, and because I headcanon Indy as having an interest in Hawaii. I previously touched upon that in my last Bluey fic, Blue Dreams, so now I'm expanding it here. And their holiday wear is a reference to the beginning of Season 3's Born Yesterday...I will not tell you how I saw it. Now, I know it's a bit of a sin to not have real-life locations in something Bluey-related, but honestly, I don't know many Hawaiian hotels that could work for the story. So I decided to make one up - the ʻīlio Hotel! ʻīlio is the Hawaiian word for 'dog', so...it works out! I decided to focus on mini-golf this chapter because golfing seems to be a popular activity in Hawaii, but having a real golf game be played just didn't feel right to me. Also, for the record, you won't get a description of what Indy's sister looks like - I don't want to jeopardize any potential official depiction of that.

Last but not least, the two new characters: Nohea and his sister Lani. I decided to make them Portuguese water dogs because...well, they're 'water' dogs. There actually was a Hawaiian breed of dog, but it's extinct, so that's why I decided against using that breed. Nohea is kinda comparable to Jean-Luc from Camping in the sense that he's a boy that the girl leads meet on vacation. At least they both speak English this time! As for why I made him and Lani's parents tourist program workers, that's just my excuse as to why he lives in the hotel, really. By the way, Nohea's name actually does mean "handsome" in Hawaiian; and Lani's name means "heaven"!

That should be it! Please read, review, and share around, and I'll see you all next time for the first peak at what Bluey and Rusty are up to! Stay diamond, everyone!
