Chapter Two

It was later when Bella coaxed her to the door of the garage, giving her a smile. "We should head back," she said, "before it gets too late."

Kagome glanced at her and gave her a warm smile and a quick nod of her head. "Right," she said in response. To the miko's surprise, it was already far past five in the evening. Time had flown by so quickly, and she'd been so absorbed in what they'd been doing that she never even noticed.

"See you around?" Jacob asked as she walked by him. Kagome paused for a second or two, a smile on her face as she nodded.

"I'll come by more often," she said as she gave a quick wave. He responded with his own after he finished cleaning the grease from his hands.

Her steps slowed as she followed Bella to her truck, and she glanced over her shoulder when she felt the weight of several stares fixed on her. An unreadable expression appeared on her face as she gazed off toward the treeline. There were figures standing there, observing them, but she couldn't see them.

In the distance, she could feel that same supernatural aura, but she still wasn't able to place what it was. All she could tell was that it certainly wasn't human…

"Kagome?"

On cue, the younger girl turned upon hearing Bella call for her. She shook her head and forced a laugh, picking up the pace and making her way to the passenger door. "Sorry," she said as she got in, Bella following after. "I thought I saw something, is all," she said then. Bella couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to her words than she let on, but she didn't push. She let it go as she turned to look at Kagome.

"So?"

At the single-worded question, the miko looked at the other girl, blinking owlishly. "So what?" she asked.

"You and Jake?" Bella prodded. "Every time I looked at you two, you guys were whispering," she added. At the claim, Bella noted how Kagome's eyes went wide. A second later, the younger girl shook her head.

"He's nice," Kagome eventually said, remembering the words he said. "He seems like a nice friend to have," she added. A second later, she shook her head and eyed Bella. "What's with the bikes, by the way?" she asked, taking the chance to alter the conversation entirely. Bella froze, expression going blank as she tried to come up with a response.

"I… I just," Bella began, scrambling slightly for the words to say. When she looked back at Kagome, she didn't miss the way her blue eyes darkened slightly as she craned her head to the side. "I know they're dangerous," she said then, and Kagome arched a brow.

"So does that mean you intend to ride them?" she asked flatly. Bella didn't say anything, but Kagome got her answer either way when her aura shifted. Kagome sighed. "Just… be careful," she said softly.

Bella looked at her, but Kagome had already turned away.

"I won't tell Charlie about this, either," Kagome said a few seconds later. She could feel the relief in Bella's aura.

"Thanks," she responded, and Kagome shook her head.

"Don't thank me," Kagome murmured quietly. Bella didn't miss the way her expression changed as she looked out the window.

The following morning, Kagome woke up at her usual time. Due to all the time she'd spent in the past- getting woken up at the crack of dawn by a certain loud-mouthed half-demon, she had become an early riser out of habit. This morning, however, she had a reason to get up at the first glimpse of sunlight coming through the window.

She had school.

It'd been a few days since she came to stay in Forks. It'd take some time for all the paperwork to get done, but today would mark the first day of school while she was there. Choosing what to wear, she was actually a little dumbfounded. She'd worn uniforms her entire education career until now.

As she looked herself over in the mirror, she was equal parts hesitant and pleased with her choice of clothing. It was simple- a dark blue t-shirt and a pair of black jeans. Her shoes were matching black combat boots.

Once she was certain she was pleased with the look, she went about getting her things gathered up and went downstairs to meet Bella.

"You ready to go?" she asked as she grabbed her keys from the table, and Kagome nodded.

"I think I have everything," she said. A second later, the pair left the house.

Seated at the lunch table with Bella's friends, Kagome was quickly pulled into a conversation.

"So, Japan, huh?" one girl, Jessica, asked. "That's like, super cool."

Kagome nodded and offered her a smile. "Yeah," she answered. "It's-"

"How are you enjoying Forks?" She had been cut off before she could finish what she wished to say, and she glanced to her left where Mike sat. She hid her annoyance, once more shifting a bit more away from him when he seemed to have gotten even closer again.

"It's okay," she said, answering him anyway. She succeeded in keeping her annoyance out of her voice. "I, um… It's nice, y'know?" she continued. "All the greenery is, at least."

"Nature fan, huh?" he prodded, and Kagome stifled a laugh.

"Maybe a little bit," she said. "Back home I got used to camping and hiking," she added. While it wasn't the complete truth, it was as close as she could get without spilling her secrets.

"No way!" he gasped before motioning to his chest. "You might not believe it, but me too," he said. Kagome nodded slowly and picked up the tiny lie right away. She offered him a smile she hoped didn't look too strained. Abruptly, his arm brushed against her own, and she had to scoot away even more- yet again. "We should totally plan a camping trip soon. It'll be tons of fun."

Kagome met his gaze before looking away entirely, silently searching out Bella's. No words were exchanged, but Kagome didn't miss the apologetic look she offered her. She eventually looked back at him, a forced smile back in place.

"Sure," she said, "fun."

She knew it'd be anything but that if she had to deal with him being too close.

After school ended, they once more went to visit Jacob. It was silent for the most part, though, for the first ten minutes they talked about the day.

Bella's friends were a brief thought as they left, and Kagome wasn't looking forward to the following day if it'd persist. Sure, she'd had worse friends before, but… she really wasn't looking forward to it.

The strange aura that lurked over the land was almost welcoming when they arrived. Kagome followed Bella out and the pair made their way to the garage where Jacob already was. When they stepped in, his eyes met her own, and she flashed him a smile that he returned instantly.

"Are you just gonna come with her all the time now?" he asked, and Kagome arched a brow.

"I guess not, if you have a problem with me being here," she countered.

"Not at all," he responded. "It's kinda funny though," he continued, jutting a wrench in her direction briefly. "You're the younger one, but you definitely come off as more of an adult."

Kagome laughed when Bella scoffed in response.

"That's uncalled for," Bella remarked, and Kagome glanced at her from the corner of her eye.

"You're horribly misreading me, then," she stated then. He arched a brow in response as if to call her out on something.

"Jeeze, what a terrible liar," he said, shaking his head.

Kagome stuck her tongue out, causing him to laugh.

She didn't say anything more because she knew he'd already called her on it. She couldn't help it, after all. She grew up quick while fighting for her life, but she couldn't deny it was fun to actually act like her age again.

It was nice being away from the supernatural. Well, at least as much as she could be away. She still couldn't shake that feeling from her whenever she picked up those strange auras.

"Yo, Jake!" A voice from the outside of the garage cut through the conversations inside, and Bella rose up instantly. She grabbed the tarps and started to pull them up over the bikes. "You in there?"

Before she could cover them up, Jacob stopped her. "It's okay," he said, "it's just my boys." He glanced towards the door before calling out, "yeah, come on!"

Kagome let her attention shift to the door as two figures stepped into her line of sight. She met their stares when they realized that Jacob hadn't been in the garage by himself. She offered them a warm smile that was quickly returned.

The first was a taller boy, thin with long hair that reached his chin. The second one was shorter with a more muscular build and short hair.

"Hey, Jake," the taller of the two said, glancing briefly at him before looking back to her.

"Hey," he responded. He was quick to notice their attention on the two girls present, and he motioned to them. "This is Bella, and she's Kagome," he said pointing them each out. He looked at Kagome and nodded to them, "that's Quil, and he's Embry."

Bella waved, and so did Kagome.

"Hi," Kagome said, "nice to meet you."

Her voice, though quiet, was loud enough to reach them.

"Hey, same," Embry said, stepping a bit closer and holding a hand out. Kagome let herself mimic his actions, placing a hand in his own.

"So I guess the bike story is true, huh?" Quil asked, cutting his eyes at Bella, and she smiled as she nodded.

"Yeah," she said, "taught him everything he knows."

"So what about the part where you're his girlfriend?" he asked, glancing at Jacob with humor in his eyes.

Bella shook her head. "We're just friends."

"Ooh," Embry muttered loud enough to be heard. "Burn."

"I said she's a girl and a friend," Jacob cut in, and the other two glanced at each other.

"You remember him making that distinction, Embry?" Quil asked. Embry shook his head.

"Sure don't."

Kagome rolled her eyes as they teased him. "So, what're your girlfriends like?" she asked. The innocent tone in her voice made them stop their teasing, and Jacob laughed, coming up on her side.

"That's right," he said, "Quil, didn't you take your cousin to prom?"

Embry laughed at Jacob's comment, and Quil rolled his eyes.

"Oh, yeah, that's still a riot, huh?" he countered. "You want funny, Black? I'll give you funny," he threatened with no sincerity behind it as he ran at Jacob. The other boy was quick to dodge, and a playful fight followed.

Kagome stepped back in time to get out of the way entirely, going to stand beside Bella. A few seconds went by before they were joined by Embry, and he paused on her other side as he eyed them with a smirk.

"Five bucks on Quil," he said. Bella laughed.

"You're on," she said. Embry looked at Kagome next, and she rolled her eyes.

It was later that evening when they arrived back home. Kagome walked into the kitchen, and, as soon as she did, Charlie called out to get her attention. Kagome paused and turned to meet his stare, giving him a curious look.

"A friend came by for you today," he said, and Kagome frowned, tilting her head to the side. Bella hovered in the doorway as she listened to the conversation. When Charlie noticed she was confused, he held his hands up as he described the person. "Tall, long white hair, gold eyes," he paused and lowered his hands. "Cold, distant, had a look that could kill…" he said, keeping at it in hopes she might recall who he talked about. "Sound familiar?" he asked, tone turning hesitant. "If not, then…-"

Kagome nodded and cut him off, a small smile on her face that disguised her confusion. "Yeah, she answered, "sorry, I just wasn't expecting anyone to come visit so soon," she continued.

Not only that, but she hadn't felt his aura at all. She recalled the rain, and she pinned it on that. After all the rain often did wash away the remnant of auras, just like it wiped away scent trails.

"That was Sesshoumaru," she said, giving him a name she knew he hadn't gotten earlier. "He's not as bad when you get to know him," she added with a promise in her voice. "He's just… not sociable, is all."

Charlie nodded, giving a sigh of relief. "Good," he said. "Because if you didn't know 'em, then it would've…-"

"Don't worry about it," she said, laughing it off before he could give a protective spiel.

As she turned, she made it up to her room.

Well, looks like she could expect a visit from him tonight.

000

As she left the bathroom that night, walking to her room, she became aware of a very familiar aura lurking inside it. She paused by her closed door as Charlie walked up the stairs.

"Goodnight," she said as he walked by, and he nodded back at her.

"Night, Kid," he said, "get some rest."

She waited for him to get out of viewing reach of her room before she opened the door. She quickly went in and shut the door behind her, twisting the lock on the knob just in case. When she turned, blue eyes landed on the familiar demon sitting on her bed.

"Hey," she hummed in greeting, keeping her voice low so as to not call attention from the other two still awake and walking around the house. Sesshoumaru arched a brow when he looked at her. "What brings you here?"

"Why did you leave the shrine?" His question was flat and one that demanded an answer. Though it wasn't a proper answer, it still answered her question all the same. Kagome paused and sighed, draping the towel she used to dry her hair down over the back of her desk chair. The semi-dry strands fell down her back in tousled waves.

"Family problems," she responded as she walked over to the bed. She sat down beside him on it. She motioned towards the door with her hand. "Bella, my cousin," she said and Sesshoumaur glanced at the door. Though he didn't know who she was, he could still tell based on the people within the house. "She's been really low lately," she explained. "My Uncle Charlie was worried, and he asked for me to come out to try and help," she said. "So, of course, I did."

"Hn." His response was short as he turned his gaze back to her. He looked her over, and Kagome arched a brow.

"What?" she asked.

"Nothing," he responded, and Kagome glared at him. "You smell off," he said two seconds later. Kagome bristled at the comment.

"Excuse you!" she hissed in a sharp whisper, "I just showered you-!"

She was cut off when something fluffy landed across her lap. Her eye twitched, and she looked down to spot his mokomoko laying across her legs. "... oh," she deadpanned, "right."

Dumb alpha instincts.

She didn't smell off. She didn't smell like him anymore, which, to his demon was off.

She didn't move to shove his mokomoko from her legs. Instead, she gently combed a hand along it. A few minutes of silence passed before she looked back up at him.

"You can feel the strange auras around, too, can't you?" she asked. He met her blue stare with molten eyes. A second passed, and he nodded.

"Yes," he stated. "I'm glad I gave in to my instinct to come find you," he continued.

"Do you know what's causing them?" she asked. Sesshoumaru looked at her, and the realization showed in his eyes.

"Of course, you don't know what they are," he commented. It wasn't any sort of a snide remark, but a genuine realization. "One source comes from vampires," he stated.

"Vampires?" she repeated the term, eyes widening some. "Like real-life vampires?" She wasn't even aware those were a thing in reality! Well, it wasn't too odd, considering demons and more existed, but she hadn't been expecting to find them here.

He nodded. "The other source…" he trailed off and sighed, tone shifting to irritation. "Wolves."

"... wolves?"

"... Werewolves," he clarified.

"So not normal wolves or even demon wolves?" Kagome questioned flatly. When he nodded, she looked down. "... ah." She didn't have the credentials to handle this.

"I will be sticking around," he commented, and she looked up to meet his gaze once more.

Suddenly, she understood why he insisted on making it clear his scent was entangled with her own. He'd probably saturated her room already before she even came in.

He really didn't share well, and he certainly didn't intend to, either.

C.R: Sesshoumaru has arrived! Kagome and he operate with a pack mentality. He's obviously the alpha, and she left without telling him where she was going. He still tracked her down easily- and quickly. He's also territorial over her due to claiming her as one of his own. As a priestess, of course, both vampires and werewolves will be drawn to her…-
I know I mentioned before that Sess/Kag is unlikely, but I'm considering it more now. At least, it might be implied periodically.

So, I intend to start updating this regularly too. I've suffered a bit of writers block as I worked on this chapter, but I finally finished it.

I hope you all enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry!

Please remember to review&favorite&follow, thank you!

Bye for now~
