For three days, Blue had been following the scent of those wretched humans who had attacked her father figure a few nights ago. She sniffed the air to see if she could find their scent. If you may remember in a past chapter, I mentioned that Velociraptors have a very keen sense of smell. This fact is what contributes to the fact that they are among the most durable hunters on the planet. The female Raptor squinted her eyes into the morning daylight as it shined through the leaves of the forest. She let out a purring sort of sound as twigs snapped with each step she too.
There was something very specific about these humans that had caught her interest tremendously. It was that Raptor she saw. For so long, she had believed that, with the deaths of her sisters, she was the last surviving Velociraptor in the World. But that night, when she had seen the shape of another Raptor standing before her in the light of the moon, she had felt as if she had been graced with a reassuring vision. A kind of apparition that seemed to taunt her. She had never even seen a male of her species before. None others besides her sisters were made on that Island. But she had barely ever been outside of her own paddock, so how exactly would she have known?
But who were these men that had attacked Owen and those other people? And what exactly did that Raptor have on the side of his head? Whatever the reason, the fact of the matter was: she was not the only Raptor anymore. For all she knew, there could even be more out there in this world. Being a highly intelligent creature, Blue knew now that whatever those humans were using this particular Raptor for, she had to get to the bottom of it. She had to break him out of it.
There seemed to be no other living things in this forest with her. Not to the eye, at least. She could still smell something small ambling around on the trail before her. She could smell the rubber of tires on the tracks, which were left by the strange transportation things that the humans used that night. However, this rubber smell was coupled with the scent of this small animal. She tilted her head curiously at the presence of whatever this was. She had not remembered ever smelling anything like this in her time in the human world. This was new.
The small creature in front of her was nowhere to be seen. But Blue could certainly hear something. It sounded an awful lot like digging. Digging in the dirt of the trail. She sniffed again and could definitely tell that this creature was a Dinosaur. But not like any she had ever smelt before. And she had smelt a lot of things out in the wild. She let out a small purring snarl as she prepared to fight whatever it was that was before her. Suddenly, she saw something in the dirt. Something moving around. As she leaned closer, she saw just what it was that was raising such awareness. And it was definitely unexpected to tell the truth.
The creature was just about the size of a normal American Badger, three feet long with a very bulbous stature. On its face, along with a beak, there were a pair of tusks on both sides of the face. The strange little dinosaur looked up at Blue with a curious look. Blue looked equally weirded out by the appearance of whatever this thing was. The animal scuttled forward with small pieces of dirt falling from its tusks. It did not seem to view the Raptor as a threat. It just ran over to a nearby bush and tore at the leaves with its stubby little beak.
The intelligent animal did not know what to make of this odd little animal. She could tell that the feeling was mutual as it munched at the vegetation before her. The way it moved, and how it was digging reminded her of the small mole creatures she had encountered out here, not to mention the similarities with the much more colorful Microceratops that inhabited woodsy areas such as this. She could also tell that it was also a herbivore, which also meant that it posed no threat to her whatsoever. It make small grunting and moaning noises as it chewed with its sharp mouth, gnawing away at its meal.
The animal suddenly jersey its head up after a good half a minute of gobbling and not acknowledging the presence of Blue. It gulped down what was in its beak and looked around, as if it had just sensed something. And as if it were waiting for this, there came a loud sound. It was like some sort of scream. Blue knew this sound as the animal those humans called "Elk." And right then and there, the Elk's scream was silenced, followed by a sound Blue remembered plainly.
The sound of a Raptor.
She lifted her head and sniffed the air. It was a Raptor, all right! Most likely the one she was searching for. She left so fast that she did not notice the small animal scurrying back to its hole and ducking in. She raced through the green plants at her top speed, all the while not making a sound. That was just how agile Velociraptors were. They could run faster than a Cheetah and you could never hear them. Her silent feet raced through the underbrush as she took off over the hill where she had heard the Raptor screech. She could smell fresh blood, and immediately came to the assumption that the animal had made its kill. And when she made it to the top, she saw that she was right.
There, gorging itself on a newly-killed Elk, was the Raptor.
The device on the side its head flashed a bright red slowly every 5 seconds. His teeth were red with the Animal's blood as it ripped a chunk of flesh from the kill. It snarled and growled, like a dog tearing at its chew toy. Blue remember how she used to eat like this. She and her sisters, that is. The male tore through its meat and swallowed it down in a matter of ten seconds. His tail swisher around as he focused on his meal. Suddenly he stopped and sniffed the air.
He grunted as blood dripped from his mouth, raising his head from the carcass. His red eyes shifted around to find the source of this strange smell. Blue knew for a fact that he had smelt her, knowing all too well about the smelling problem. She stepped back, somewhat preparing to run if necessary. She could see his quills tingle. This was most likely a sign that he knew what he was Smelling. And then, in the acoustics of the forest, she heard a voice. A voice only understood by her. As a human, all we would hear from these intelligent creatures would be low grunts and barks. But what they are truly saying is this:
"You are out there. I know you are. You are the one I saw that night. And you have nothing to fear from me. Unless, of course, I have something to fear from you."
Blue hesitated to respond. She had not spoken to any other dinosaur in three years. Not even when she had encountered Rexy when she was released. Wherever she was now, Blue just hoped she was alive and well. However, she knew that she could not keep this Raptor waiting for her, or he might come personally and might mistakenly attack her. So, she opened her mouth and replied.
"How do I know they are not watching? The humans you were with, I mean."
"If they wanted to stalk me, they wouldn't have opened the gate, now would they?" Came the Male's reply. "So, I would come on out if I were you."
At this recommendation, Blue hesitantly stepped out of the bushes in front of her and showed herself to the Raptor. His eyes widened in surprise as he stared at her in disbelief. His claws were stained red from when he brought down his meal. He took no notice of his appearance, however, as he felt as if he had seen a ghost. And for Blue, the feeling was mutual.
"So, it's true then." He said with mild disbelief. "I am not the only one."
"Took the words out of my mouth." Blue lowered her head defensively. "That thing on the side if your head, what is it? Did they do it to you?"
"The worst part of it is: they shock it whenever I get out of line." The Raptor replied, flexing his bloody claws. He decided to change the subject. "You know what that feels like? I will tell you this much: it is certainly no morning hunt. But let us not dwell on such things. You followed me all the way out here. Why?"
"I needed to be sure it was a Raptor I saw." Blue got closer to him as she remained cautious.
The male Raptor seemed to find this amusing as he tilted his head at her caution. "You still cower. The humans who I was with do not track me with this thing on my head. I know because I've hidden from them many times. Now, I imagine that you may have a few questions at the moment. Believe me, I do as well. And you know, there's one that I wish to get out of my system: Who are you?"
"I am named by the one who raised me. They call me Blue. What is it that they call you?"
"They do not refer to me to a short name like yours. Humans are not always as simple when giving names as yours was. The one with the black hair mostly refers to me Asset Z667S."
"Interesting. If my humans had named you, you probably would've been named something like Beta or Purple or something of that make. Hmm… ZS? ZS…" Blue looked down as she began to think on a more appropriate name for this Raptor. So far, the two had appeared to show no hostility towards each other. No reason to attack one another.
Blue thought for a moment as she put together fragments of this odd name of his. Surely, with the sharpness of a Velociraptor's mind. The two letters Z and S. These two letters sounded oddly familiar to something she had heard once before on the Island. That one human, Hoskins. She remembered that he had visited Owen after her hatching and had given a recommendation for a name for her.
Zeus.
She scoffed at this memory. Clearly, he didn't know that she was a girl. That is when Owen corrected him. The name he suggested, however, was what had come to mind when thinking of the letters Z and S.
"You know, I believe I may have a suggestion."
"For what?"
"A name." Blue approached him, being slightly more comfortable in his presence.
"Well Blue, I am surprised. And based on the past few days, that's not exactly a new feeling. You say that you've found me a name as if you had pulled it out of thin air."
"Well, in a way, I have. Back on the Island, there was someone who wanted to give me a name with the exact letters given in your… 'name.'" The two of them exchanged a chuckle that we call snarling. "Zeus."
The Raptor looked down at his feet as he contemplated this name. His eyes squinted as he began to think. Finally, he raised his head back up to the fellow Raptor. "Zeus? Zeus. Zeus it is, then. I like it."
"So, tell me, Zeus," Blue had decided to get to more pressing matters. "Those people that you were with. Who are they? Why did they attack Owen?'
"Was that the name of the person you were defending?" Zeus asked. "Well, the human known as Baselton led the attack under the orders of the man named Dodgson. He said that since he was hiding those younger humans and their protector, he was a suspect as well."
"Suspect to what?'
"As a witness to their plans. What they are using me for."
"Are they using the others as well?"
"Um, what others?"
"The other Raptors." Blue answered. "Are they using the other Raptors as well?"
"Blue… they aren't using other Raptors." Zeus shook his head.
"What…?"
"That's why I thought I was the last one. I had been on my own for so long ever since my own home was destroyed. That was when those humans found me. They needed me for something. Something that involved the creatures they had captured before me. And when they had finally caught me, they put this strange thing in my head. It made my roars sound different. But it controlled them."
"Who? Controlled who?"
Before Zeus could open his mouth to even utter one word, he suddenly shrieked out in pain. The device on his head buzzed loudly as its light had stopped flashing. Blue watched as this had transpired with a great deal of shock. Once the buzzing sound had ceased, Zeus lifted his head back up to. "I'm sorry. I have to go. Stay away from them, Blue. Stay safe."
He then rushed back through the undergrowth. Now naturally, Blue was not content with possibly the only other raptor in the world up and leaving like this. Nor was she content with the way he spoke. He sounded in pain. As if that device was hurting him greater than he had described. And the way he told her to stay away made her think that whatever he was working with scared even him. She then leaped over the Elk carcass and raced after him. She had seen the direction he had taken, and she could track him as well. At a break-neck speed, she bounded through the forest after her fellow raptor.
She could definitely smell him. That was good. As long as she could still smell him, she could still find out where it was that he was going. And who it was those men were. Suddenly, as she sped through a growth of bushes, she could not see that it was actually overlooking a steep hill. She tumbled down it a very good distance before stopping at a large tree trunk. She grunted as she dusted herself off. But before she could get back to her feet, she smelt something.
And it wasn't Zeus.
It was very much bigger than any Raptor. That much was for sure as she felt the ground shake beneath her. Could it have been Rexy? From the way this animal smelt, it surely wasn't. She sensed a small bit of Ceratosaurus in there, but it was much different. It smelt wilder. Bolder. After a few seconds of smelling did the Ceratosaur show itself. It grunted slightly as it shook its head from the under growth. And then behind it, there was the reddish-brown form of a Carnotaur.
These two Dinosaurs had eyes of only white, and opened and closed their jaws in anticipation. Although, surprisingly, for something that smelt so much fiercer than normal, they seemed calm. At the other edge of the clearing, she saw an Allosaurus and a Green Dinosaur she had never seen before as well. The four of them all had matching white eyes as they snarled and growled at each other.
And then came the sound.
It sounded so much like the sound of a Raptor, but it was also so much more different. It sounded more enhanced. Otherworldly. She turned her head when she heard more rustling. And to her horror, she saw the shape of Zeus come out of the center of the clearing. He barked at the larger Dinosaurs with his strangely enhanced sounds. And stranger still, they seemed to respond to it. As of they were subordinate Raptors.
"What?"
But she dared no show herself, or these larger Dinosaurs would surely see her. And to add to this surprise, a man showed up. This was a man with short brown hair and a green jacket. He held a device in his hand. And when he pressed it, Zeus ceased his barking. The gadget in his head stopped blinking.
The man then reached into his pocket and pulled out a walkie-talkie. "Dodgson to Wu. Spino and Dilo are en route. Permission to begin?"
"Affirmative Lewis." That voice on the other line. Blue somewhat remembered that voice from when she was on the Island. It was that man who worked in the lab with Dearing. She had heard his voice on many occasions, nearly as much as Dearing's.
Louder rustling could be heard in the forest around them. Birds could be heard squawking in fear. Trees could be heard bending and creaking. Limbs being stomped on. She knew something bigger was coming towards them. And she knew by the jacket this man was wearing, he was with those people she had seen with Zeus the other night. And whatever was ailing these animals, she knew these men had something to do with it.
All she could do now was follow.
And there we have Chapter 18. For this one, I wanted to do a little insight on the interaction between Blue and Zeus, the Raptor used in Biosyn's nefarious plans. They both share a nice conversation and share a little bit about themselves. Even though Spielberg wouldn't do this, I just wanted to do that for the story's sake. So yeah, if you may have already guessed, Zeus is in no way a bad guy. And in the next Chapter, we will be listening in for more of Wu's hidden files on Sorna with Claire and her crew. But what they don't know is that Sorna is also the breeding grounds of Biosyn's hounds. What are these hounds? We'll just have to see.
Also, for those of you who did not know what that small animal Blue encountered was, it was a Lystrosaurus, a Dinosaur confirmed to be appearing in the actual movie. So yeah, probably expect to see him again in the future. Remember to subscribe to my YouTube channel, MadDino Productions as a narrate each chapter of this specific story.
