It had been almost ten minutes since Franklin was lost. It would be a lie to say that the hearts of Zia and Malcolm were not affected by watching their team member die. Zia knew Franklin better, though, as they both worked in the DPG together for five years. So, losing someone she knew that well was not something she had anticipated.
But that was only the second thing on her mind at the moment. Right now, they had another problem.
During the day of reckoning for Isla Nublar, Zia had been captured by Wheatley and his team of mercenaries. She had not been around during the stampede of horror. A hundred fleeing animals, running for their lives from a fiery inferno. Being a captive to the horrid employees of Mills, Zia had not had the experience of laying eyes on the Queen of Jurassic Park, later World. A great T-rex with light brown skin and scars from past battles, some old, some older. There were some who called the animal Roberta. Others, however, knew her by a different name. One that she would be called much more frequently. Rexy.
And that was exactly what was staring them down right now.
A deathly, low rumble came from the Animal's maw as her yellow eyes looked down at them. Her massive head above the large generator of the garage. Her fangs stuck out of the top part of her mouth, a row of banana-sized teeth. The two humans could see her large tail swishing around slowly. They had found themselves in a staring contest with a former queen. They stared at her, she stared back. And then came a weird warbling sound from above. They looked up at the rafters and saw several shapes perched in the metal bars.
Pteranodons.
And not only that, but there was about a dozen Dimorphodons present as well. Each of these winged reptiles were perched above the brown queen's head. None of them were too far from her. They all looked down at the humans and chattered in their bird-like voices. Some flapped their wings in anxiety while others chirped and squawked.
As still as Zia and Malcolm were, they seemed to be prepared to run. A T-rex on ground, and a flock of flying reptiles up above. They seemed to be surrounded. However, as they continued to look at Rexy, they noticed something.
The queen made no advances towards them. Nor did her followers.
Rexy only stood there, behind the large machine. The look in her eyes read that something was wrong with her. She let out a rumbling growled as she continued to look down at the two humans. Neither one of them made a move, as she gave no reason to. Given the circumstances, she would gladly have given chase to two humans. But she had not had any human contact for a whole year.
"U-um, shouldn't we be, oh I don't know, running?" Malcolm asked as his Chaotician eyes beheld the large beast before them, never once leaving them unless to look at the winged terrors.
Zia merely stood there. Having just lost a good friend of hers, there were many emotions that flooded her mind at the time. She still felt great loss, while feeling a great twinge of fear at being in the presence of something like this. Naturally, Malcolm would be right. Running would be the appropriate response to a situation of this ilk. As the Chaotician was preparing to run, he fought that urge, as he also tried think of a way to explain that TWO of her interns had become food for these animals.
And why was Zia walking towards the beast.
He just stood there as he watched her make her way towards the large generator. Her eyes never left the sight of the Tyrannosaur. And the yellow gaze of the lizard never left her as well. Malcolm raised his hands slowly as he slightly approached her. "M-Ms., Rodriguez, I don't think that's wise."
"Just stay there." Zia whispered, waving her hand at him. As she rounded the corner of the giant mechanism, one of the Pteranodons flew down from the rafters and landed in front of her. It let out a loud squawk as it flapped its wings at her.
Naturally, as intelligent as she was about the outdoors, Zia had figured that these winged creatures were waiting around for the creature to die. She had thought that they had some characteristics of vultures waiting for some carrion. But with this one individual blocking her from going any further told another story. This told her that these animals were protecting her, a sort of symbiotic relationship. They were like parents looking out for offspring. It could have been that they were even protecting something higher. Something more pragmatic.
Their queen.
Instead of vultures, she now saw them as hornets, protecting their queen from harm. Not only would these reptiles have relied on Rexy for food, but they also saw her as someone to defend. Someone to call their leader. Zia stepped back as the animal opened its beak and let out another screech of warning.
But then, just as the Pteranodon was about to make another move that would most likely be harmful towards her, there came a noise that caught its attention. Rexy growled at the winged animal, as if to say 'stand down.' The Pteranodon looked up at its queen before turning back to Zia. It then let out a slight chirp as it hopped aside. Its flock above watched anxiously as he let Zia pass. And when the human came around the corner, she saw what it was that was keeping Rexy from attacking.
Doing much study in the biology of Hammond's creations, Zia had had the opportunity to study the many forms of bites among the many Dinosaurs out there. As such, she knew which bites held venom and what effects they could leave. And the injury on Rexy's leg showed a bite that Zia knew all too well. The wound was open and torn. Something had bitten into her leg and left a very nasty bite. Average minds may have just chalked this injury up to something like a large dog, but Zia knew better. She recognized the infection the venom was making. A Dilophosaur's bite can have dreadful effects. It had to be a guess, but she could very well imagine that this was the same Dilophosaurus that Biosyn was using for their dreadful scheme.
As she got closer to the injured leg, Rexy hardened her face and snarled at her. Despite ordering the Pteranodon to stand down, she was still weary of these creatures called humans. And she was especially weary of them being this close to them. There were many occasions where humans had made a negative impression on her life, such as when someone stuck a cattle prod up her nose after she defeated the white terror. Then there was the time more humans locked her in an uncomfortable cage and sent her to lands beyond her island. Why didn't she swim away from that place? She knew she could swim, so why didn't she swim away after winning the day once again all that time ago? Long before the great rock exploded.
Zia took notice of her defensive attitude and raised her hands. "Hey, hey, hey. I'm not gonna hurt you. I just want to help."
The former queen looked pitiful in all honesty. She looked tired. It could have just been an effect of the venom in her veins, but she was also one of the oldest dinosaurs in existence. As she looked at the human, she did notice something: she bore no weapons. No cattle prod. No rifle. Nothing. In all of her years of dealing with humans, Rexy had always noticed a pattern in the people who disrupted the order of her kingdom. They wanted to rip. They came to sunder. She thought that all humans were insolent, repugnant beings. But now, this one was giving the philosophy a good deal of doubt. No matter. She would only allow her to approach to see what she would do. Besides, she was in no position to make any life threats today. It was her trusted winged subjects who kept her alive all of this time, bringing her carrion. But they could not expel the poison that was endangering what life she had left. She lowered her head down, to show that she would not harm Zia.
To Zia, this said 'Do what you want now before I change my mind.' And as such, she opted to act quickly to stop the spreading of this venom. She had packed her health pack for the trip in case anyone needed it. Hopefully, if she caught up with the others, she would use this to patch up Dr. Grant. After, of course, she broke the news of Franklin to them.
She grabbed a bottle of antiseptic and put some of it into a syringe. She then pressed the needlepoint into the injury. Slowly but surely, the Dilophosaurus venom seemed to start ebbing, like water in a sponge. Now came the part where she had to clean out the wound. While the antiseptic was working, she took out a cloth and dabbed up the blood. Next, she motioned for Malcolm to come over. Though hesitant and first, Malcolm slowly caved in and went over to her.
She handed one end of a large sling to him and instructed him to pull it to the other side of the Tyrannosaur leg. He complied and brought to back to her on the other side. They had wrapped it up in three layers with Zia finally tying it up on the third. The reptiles on the rafters watched with curiosity as this unfolded. As Zia was finishing up the sling, she tightened it up as it slightly turned red. The injury was completely covered, and would help it heal much faster.
"Now, it will feel numb for a while," Zia said as she stared at her work. "But in an hour or so, she'll be able to walk."
"That's all well and good, Ms. Rodriguez," Malcolm wiped his forehead as he began to sweat. Just watching someone getting eaten for the first time in years was stressful enough, but being so close to the very animal who nearly killed him in the past was another. He had two encounters with this very Tyrannosaur already. One ended with him being thrown into a bathroom, and the other… well, I will say this: Must go faster. "But, um, what the heck are you doing?"
"What does it look like?" Zia answered as she examined Rexy's leg. "I'm fixing up her injury."
"But why?" Malcolm pressed on. "Don't you know what that is? You're not exactly working on an average housecat here. You're literally working with something that can eat you."
"If she wanted to eat us, we would've been dead already." Zia scoffed. "Predators aren't all 'kill this, kill that.' Besides the fact that they're meat-eaters, there's not much difference between her and a Triceratops. They're all animals, trying to survive any way that they can. It's not her fault she has to kill to survive. Besides, we can't just leave her like this. She's defenseless, like we are. If you saw her during the whole thing with Mills, you'd know that she was one of the dinosaurs locked under Lockwood manor. If Wu's Marine Iguana theory is correct, she could've swum away from the Island after the first park. It may have just been her own instincts telling her to stay, or maybe she was scared. She hasn't been anywhere beyond the Island until 2018, and after being released, she's a fish out of water now. No longer a queen. But hey, that'd probably be how they all feel."
After Zia's little speech, the large animal gave a low growl as she raised her head back up. Rexy looked down at Zia with those same yellow eyes. They seemed to be staring down into her soul. The eyes of a nocturnal predator, judging whether or not to attack you. The Pteranodons and Dimorphodons leaned closer as they chattered in anxiety. Her massive tail waved around as her stomach never left the floor. Zia and Malcolm looked up at her as she looked back. The two humans back away as the animal continued to growl.
But stopped when she did.
She was silent. And yet she sat there, continuing to stare at her. It was as if they had tamed her by cleaning her infected wound. She shook her head like a freshly washed dog as she gave a grunt. A Dimorphodon flew down and perched itself on her back, followed by several other and some Pteranodons. This reminded Zia of how a flock of birds could perch themselves on either a Rhino, Hippo, or even an Elephant's back. Symbiotic was the chosen word to define this relationship. She protects them, they protect her. It seemed as if the Pterosaurs were completely loyal to her, that much was clear to the pair now.
And now, it seemed as if they both were in good with the Queen. Zia then felt something nudging her under her arm. She turned to see the Pteranodon bouncer from before, rubbing its beak underneath her elbow like a dog showing affection towards its owner. She laughed at this and turned to see two other Pteranodons getting to know Malcolm as well.
"U-uh, hey not right there. Hey!" Of course, it may have taken some getting used to. But he did not seem too scared of them anymore.
Zia rubbed the head of the once hostile Pteranodon at her side before something caught her attention. One of the Dimorphodons looked out one of the windows and let out an alarmed screech. The rest of its flock soon snapped at attention as something was heard outside. Zia and Malcolm heard it as well and hurried to the window. Sure enough, they saw something coming from the withered brush outside. And when the dead foliage came down, the culprit was revealed.
It was a truck.
They had just found the exit of that forbidden observatory faster than they had ever run before. The Pyros screeched loudly from back inside the building. None of them dared to look back. Ellie and Maxin carried the injured Grant as they raced into the dead jungle, with Claire leading the way.
She could not see that Zia, Malcolm. And Franklin had fallen behind, for she was too busy escaping from the Hurisym-induced Pyros. "Come on!" She yelled to her companions. Hopefully, the boat was right around the corner. Then they would get off this Island and never come back.
Soon, the light brownness of the sand came into view. Thank God. And right there, parked where they left it, was the boat Claire had rented for the voyage. She never should have decided to come here. She could hear the rapid breaking of branches from far behind them. She knew the Pyroraptors were out of the building, and were still in hot pursuit. The boat was right up ahead. "Hurry!"
Only when the faces of two Pyros came from the deck did they halt.
Ellie gasped as she held Grant on his feet. The crazed animals climbed over the hull and landed on the sand before them. Their feathered tails waved around in ferocious anticipation. Grant raised his head and his weary eyes beheld the insane Dinosaurs as their claws flexed in anticipation.
But when they turned around, they saw that that way was not the best way either. The rest of the pack had arrived. Soon, the whole beach was filled with furious, snarling dinosaurs. The entire pack surrounded the four as saliva dripped from their maws. Their fangs glistened with the sheer drive to kill anything they saw. Maxin could see that there was one with red on its fangs. He knew that this was the individual that had injured Grant. But that mattered little now. Now, the rest of its pack was ready to kill them. For all they knew, they had already gotten Zia and the others.
They stood together as the first one let out a screech and leaped forward, waiting for the claws…
…
…
…
…
What?
The sounds that could have been described as roaring and growling were replaced by that of confused chirps and snarls. Suddenly, a cloud of white smoke had engulfed the creature that tried to attack them. The animal laid on its back, its legs flailing in the air. It got up and snorted irritably as it started to gasp. It then turned around and sprinted towards the jungle.
As the rest of the pack snorted in confusion, something shot through eh air towards them. They were large, black balls. When they impacted on the sandy ground, an explosion of strange, white smoke was the result. The Pyros all squealed loudly as they recoiled from the smoke. They snorted and gasped frantically as they swished their heads around. All around Claire and her group, they saw Pyros fleeing back to the jungle where the first one had departed. Apparently, there was something about this smoke that did not sit right with these creatures. And then came a metal-sounding swing, and a shriek from one of the animals.
And yelling.
Human yelling.
As if on cue, after Claire and her group heard this yelling, there came a new shape in the smoke. And then another. Then another. But they weren't any animals. They were humans. Men. As they came closer to the group, Claire could make them out much more clearly. They wore grey uniforms with blue stripes running all the way down the side. They all wore shoulder and knee pads and red helmets.
The first man approached her. "Are you Claire Dearing?"
"Yes I am." Claire answered rather skeptically. "Who are you?"
"We're here to rescue you and your team." He answered. "Under orders from Terry Robinson, we have received word that you came here at 0700 hours. He was given a very reliable tipoff of your location."
"But we can't leave yet, we still have others around here- "
"Do not worry, Ms. Dearing. We sent out a reconnaissance crew to the observatory to find your other teammates." The smoke around them began to fade. And with the smoke residing so much, it became so much easier to see. Easier to see something moving. Two of the armored men surrounded the Pyroraptor on the ground, a viable candidate for the metallic swing that the group had heard before. The animal was tied up in a bolas that must've been swung when all this smoke was released. The animal struggled wildly as it chattered and screamed, its white, crazed eyes blinked rapidly as it tried to break out. It was the one that had injured Grant, as she could see the blood on its fangs.
"Sir, we caught one of them," One of the soldiers said as the others helped surround it. "What should we do with it?"
"Get it on the ship," The general commanded. "Mr. Robinson made it known that his labs are ready to test their anti-serum. Alright men, I want you to set up a perimeter. Have the recon crew rendezvous with us here by the boats. Get Dr. Grant on the boat as well, we must have his injuries treated. Renaldo, stock up on plenty of Petromethane bombs, those things might be back."
"Yes sir!" A soldier said as he and several other soldiers hurried aboard the boat. Three of them helped Ellie and Maxin escort Grant onto the large ship that Claire saw was parked on the beach while some of the others carried the captured Pyroraptor aboard as well.
She looked at something about the general's uniform that she hadn't noticed before. There was some sort of symbol with a DNA strand, and below it was four words that she could read as "Creating a new world." As if she had seen a ghost of her past, Claire knew exactly where these men had come from.
"Mantah Corp…"
Welp, guess Claire and company are rescued at last. Zia and Malcolm have made a new ally in the tired queen of Isla Nublar and her remaining followers. It seems that like Velociraptors, Tyrannosaurs can be tamed, if worked with enough. With the arrival of Mantah Corp, Grant's injuries will be healed while the captured Pyroraptor will be tested for a way to reverse the effects of the Hurisym chemical. And in doing so, they will be able to stop Biosyn's nefarious plans for control over the global government. But will it be in time to stop the dreaded "Phase Three"?
