Everything was coming to her so fast. One minute, she was falling down the cliffs edge. Next thing she knew, she was back inside the observatory on Isla Sorna. She could hear the hyena-like snarling and chattering of the Pyroraptors. Then, she found herself in another location.
Isla Nublar.
The rainforest was lush and green. It was untouched. It was as if Mt. Sibo had never erupted. The wind blew softly through the leaves as she looked around at the dense landscape. She could not believe what she was seeing.
'This has to be a dream.' Zia thought to herself. She knew all too well that Isla Nublar was long gone now. She still walked along through the rainforest as peace rung through the air.
Ever since she had left Sorna. Zia had had a lot on her mind. She had lost one of her closest friends only a short time before now, and she hadn't been the same since. So much had happened to hurt her with the loss of Franklin, that she had almost forgotten the elephant in the room.
The fact that there was a high-tech terrorist organization out to control everything in the U.S. boundaries.
To say that thus was not a concern for Zia would be untrue. Franklin's death was not only a shock to her, but to the whole team who had gone on that cursed voyage. The more she thought about it, the more it ached her inside. That it was her fault. She could not deny that it was her fault Franklin was dead. If she hadn't held everyone back, they wouldn't have come across that Cantho. So many times, she cursed herself for letting it happen. But there was also the fact that it was traced all the way up to Biosyn.
Zia looked around for any sign of life. No bugs had flown around her. No song of exotic birds. It was as quiet as a mouse. She would have thought that, on an island filled with Dinosaurs, she would've heard something at some point.
The whole time she had been in the jungle, she had not come across one living thing. She would think that there would be at least one animal that she would find. But no. Not even a mosquito. She just stood there, shaded by the exotic trees. And all was quiet, until-
SMACK!
Zia felt herself be knocked to the ground by an impact she never suspected. She looked up to see the face of George Baselton looking g down at her, his gun in his hands.
She then felt the earth shake from beneath her. She looked to see the shapes of Rexy and Ahab the Spinosaurus, fighting viciously. This was what was happening before she had fallen down the cliff. Before everything went black.
The one thing that changed was the part where George sent the butt of his gun down into her face.
Zia woke with a sudden start from her dream. And apparently, just in time too. Her gasp of fright was cut off by a strange feeling. She woke to find that her surroundings were fairly different than one second ago. Her gasp of fear could not be heard.
She was underwater.
She struggled to swim to the surface, the light above her floating body. She must've fallen into the river when she fell from the cliff. She swam to the light above her. Up to the surface. Finally, she broke from the water and breathed in a deep gasp of air. She looked around to see her surroundings. She was in a large lake that was not too far from an opening to the ocean. Darn, she thought, how long was she out?
As if in reply, a minor whoosh swept past her in the gravity of her wet surroundings. She turned her head to see if she could see what it was. She saw nothing. The water was still. Almost too still. She knew that out here, Dinosaurs would not normally venture. But when she felt it come again, slightly stronger, then did she realize she was not alone.
It felt as if it were something big. Very big. But if it felt so big, how could she not see it? If it felt that big, she would not have a hard time seeing it. She did see something. A wave had washed its way towards the opening to the sea before falling back into the water. But Zia could see it.
The tail.
She watched as the back of the Mosasaurus turned around. It must've been circling her, like a shark. As the monster began to swim towards her, she could see its' face. Its eyes stared at her, anticipating the moment it so knew was coming. Zia turned around and thrashed her arms forward, making a mad swim forward. The shore was too far away.
She would never make it.
The water splashed behind her. She closed her eyes, knowing now, her time had come. When suddenly, she felt something. Not at all pain. But it was something grabbing onto her. Not the fangs of the Mosasaur. They almost felt like talons. And immediately, she felt herself be lifted out of the water. She saw the maw of the water monster lunging and missing by merely a hair. Its backside descending back under the surface.
She looked up to see what it was that had picked her up. The Pteranodon flapped its wings before glancing down at her and letting out a squawk. Another one had appeared on her left. Another on her right. Now she was dealing with three Pteranodons. She watched as the water below her got farther away. She saw the direction that her winged savior was taking her.
The beach was clearly in view. And she had found herself getting lower towards it. She felt the talons of the Pteranodon release her, causing her to fall flat onto the sand of the beach. She coughed the water and sand out of her mouth as she pushed herself up. She looked up as the Pteranodons flew into the trees above her. She saw a shape fly down to her, emerging from the leaves and landing in front of her.
She saw the jaws of the Dimorphodon in front of her face. She could smell its breath as it inspected her. Zia was rather waterlogged from just waking up in water, so she didn't have enough energy to run right now. The creature breathed heavily and started to sniff. She could only watch as the curious winged reptile inspected her. Its yellow eyes scanned her intently. Suddenly, it jolted back. A sound began to come from the trees. A sort of low growling of a large animal.
The Dimorphodon stared up at the forest, as if it knew what it was that was in there. It chattered slightly. It was almost as if it were replying to the noise. The small creature let out a squawk before flapping its wings and flying up to join the rest of its flock.
Zia watched the forest with curious eyes. She could feel her strength coming back to her from her nap in the water. She was curious as to why she had not died from being down there for as long as she was. She heard the growling stop instantly. And then there was the noise of branches breaking. She felt the ground shaking beneath her. She watched as a small water stuck on the beach from the tide began to move.
She knew that there was a large Dinosaur coming.
Was it any of the pack?
Well, she watched as her answer came into view. A large shape began to slowly walk from the underbrush. Branches began to break from the mere head of the dinosaur walking normally. And now, Zia could see just what it was that was before here.
Rexy.
The old queen of InGen's creations. The mighty Tyrannosaur towered above Zia as she stared up at her. She climbed up to her feet, almost ready to run. However, Rexy just stood there, her aging, baggy skin basking in the sunlight. Zia could see that she had some new scars on her body from when she battled against the Spinosaurus. Heaven knew how the tired old creature held out this long. Zia then heard something else coming.
Soon, right behind the old queen, there were three other Tyrannosaurs. These seemed to be in the adolescent age. Two of them were brown, like Rexy, while the third was green, obviously a male. It didn't take Zia much to guess that these were Rexy's offspring.
"Um, h-hih there." She waved lightly towards the large Tyrannosaur. "Good to see you again. Um, your leg, it seems to be healing up nicely."
Last time Zia had seen ol' Rexy, she had healed her leg of a poisonous bite back on Isla Sorna. The tired queen gave a snort as she lowered her head. Soon enough, her face was staring right into the face of the human. Her eyes blinked as they stared intently at the one who healed her.
"So, um," Zia tried to find the right words to say here. What kinds of conversations COULD you have with a dinosaur? "How're you doing?"
As expected, Rexy gave no answer. Her three children crowded at her side, also looking at her. Zia clearly took notice of them. She knew that these three were being protective of their mother, and were prepared to fight if necessary. "So, kids huh? Dad up and left, huh? Yeah, mine didn't stay, either. Surprised they didn't leave yet. They're at the age of maturity if I'm not mistaken."
And that was when it had pretty much hit her. Perhaps the reason the offspring of Rexy did not leave was not because of immaturity. Perhaps, it was some sort of instinct that they had. Some sort of obligation that they had to stand by their mother. They must've known that their mother was left with nothing now that she was out in the world. And that was probably why all those Pteranodons and Dimorphodons were sticking with her as well. It may have also been for safety on their part. But as she observed, the winged reptiles seemed to show true loyalty to the queen.
She watched as Rexy closed her eyes. Zia, being a Paleo-veterinarian had watched animal expressions for a long time in the DPG. And she could tell that Rexy was becoming slightly submissive. The mighty queen breathed heavily, anticipating Zia to pet her, showing that they were on good terms. She extended her hand and hesitantly touched the creature on the snout.
It seemed as if the world around the two had suddenly stopped what it was doing. All the troubles that had followed the lives of this human and this Dinosaur for so long seemed to be forgotten. It was very useful to know that there was someone out there on your side. Even in the circumstances of the world around them.
Zia, having lost one friend, needed someone to help her now that she had tried to distance herself from everyone. Franklin's death had shaken her so much, that she had made it a goal to prevent herself from making any close friends anymore. So, who exactly would have guessed that the one who changed her mind was a Tyrannosaurus Rex?
Whereas Rexy stood, her only friends in the world happened to be other kinds of predators. During her days of being wild following 1993, she had become a protector of predators and herbivores alike. She had kept the balance on that island, and as such, she had become their queen of sorts. But now., the Island was all but a bitter memory. None of the Dinosaurs needed her anymore. They had more numbers now, and could defend themselves much better these days. No one needed her anymore. Not even her own mate saw it necessary to linger around with the likes of her.
But perhaps, with these new humans threatening the futures of both humans and dinosaurs, Rexy had found herself a new purpose. Sure, her former subjects had forgotten about her, but why should she forget about them? Yes, when Zia helped cure her of her Troodon bite, she had figured that not all humans were as bad as she had let on.
The moment of silence was interrupted by the squawk of one of her Pteranodon scouts. The winged reptile flew from the forest across the lake and landed next to Zia. She watched as the animal chattered towards the largest rex before her. One of Rexy's daughters growled lowly as she stared down at him. Rexy then gave a purring noise, giving the daughter the assuring command to calm herself.
"Humans." The Pteranodon said to her. "Young humans in the forest. Younger than yours right here."
Rexy tilted her head as she listened to her scout. Other humans in her woods? Perhaps this was the best way to start with her idea. Her idea of helping the humans on Zia's side. There must've been more humans like her out there. And perhaps these young ones were the first step to achieving the end of this great threat.
"Lead her to them. And keep an eye on her for as long as she is in the woods."
Welp, this was a pretty important chapter. We get ourselves some character development from our favorite dino-queen. She wants to help Zia like how she helped her. And who knows? Maybe we can get some more cameos from some dino characters we already know. And then some. Yes, we have some more dinosaur dialog coming in future chapters. Like I have said before, I don't think Spielberg or Trevorrow would have that in their movies, but it is something I will do for my story. How exactly will Rexy, her children, and her loyal flying reptiles help Zia and the kids? Stay tuned to find out. See you next time, and Spare no expense.
