Read and relax
Marco frowned as his phone rang, his personal one. Not many called that now, as he was at work, and he frowned more when it was Ace, who was supposed to be at work now, he probably had a reason. He moved the phone up to his ear after sliding the green circle to answer it. "Marco Fishback." He said by habit, and he heard a sigh. "Hey, it's Ace. Do you have a minute? I couldn't reach Pops." Marco was currently between meetings now. "Yes, I do. Pops got a meeting now. Is anything wrong? Do you have to work this weekend, yoi?" They were supposed to meet and have dinner this weekend, all of them, and he hadn't really seen Ace lately, they've just spoken at rare times. It was a bit unusual, but things were probably hectic as Christmas was nearing now.
He heard a sigh. "No, but I can't come anyhow." Marco frowned with that. Ace loved the family. So why wouldn't he come? "Why not? Has anything happened, yoi?" Another sigh. "It's just… I'm being admitted to a psych ward today. I know I should have said something earlier. but I didn't want to worryeveryoneandnotseemtobeabothera-" Marco moved his hand up. "Woah woah there." He didn't get everything there as Ace was rambing fast, but he got the start. "You're being what, yoi? Admitted to a psych ward? Why?" Yes, Ace had been a bit off in the past weeks, but enough to be admitted? Nothing seemed to be that wrong.
Ace gave a breath and he sounded upset. "It's just… I'm not doing too well right now, and my doctor wants me admitted, and… I think I need to be right now." Marco blinked. "Why?" What was so wrong he would be admitted? Ace gave another breath. "The last weeks have just been… tough, I've barely been out of the house, I haven't been able to do things and just been… stuck." Marco frowned. "Stuck with what, yoi?" Marco was very confused right now. When he saw Pops in the hallway, his door open, he snapped his fingers and got his attention and made him come inside the room as Ace took a breath. "Things. Can I call back in an hour or three? I am almost at the ward and I was told to be fast, and I needed to tell someone. I was supposed to tell Pops, but then Icoultn'dreachhimandIdidn'tknowwhat-" Marco shook his head. "Calm down, Ace. Call me as soon as you can, yoi. Things will be fine." Another breath on the other end. "Yeah… I hope so." Then Ace hung up, and he felt very worried as he took the phone away and looked at Pops, who looked worried himself, probably since Marco had a deep frown by now.
Pops looked at him. "Is Ace okay? I was just about to call him back as he called me." Marco gave a small shake of his head. "I don't know, actually. He's… being admitted to a psych ward, yoi." Pops blinked. "He's what? Why?" Marco shook his head. "My thoughts exactly. He didn't say too much, as he's already there and he said he would call again when he could, yoi. I have no idea what is going on now." He didn't, and he didn't like that. Was Ace so sick he needed to be admitted? And none of them had noticed? Pops had a frown as well. "Is this, I mean, is this a willing stay?" Marco blinked. "I didn't ask that, yoi. Maybe? I hope so." If this was forced, it meant things were really bad. Pops nodded. "Did he say which ward? I mean, if it is the Westside Bulwark one, it is willing. Is it the one on South end, Blakstad if I remember, it is most likely forced." Marco shook his head. "He didn't say, yoi."
Marco had no idea what to think now. He looked at Pops. "I know he has been a bit off, but so much to be admitted to a psych ward, yoi?" Whitebeard lightly shook his head. "I have barely spoken to him the last few weeks, much less seen him." Marco was the same. He didn't know what to do or think. Pops gave a breath. "He said he would call back when he could?" Marco nodded. "Yes, in an hour or three, yoi." Pops nodded. "Make him call me too, I'll cancel my next meeting and do some paperwork instead, I need to know what's going on." Marco nodded, he did the same. "I just hope he is okay, yoi." Pops nodded. "I hope so as well, but if he is being admitted to Westside Bulwark, I've only heard good things. I haven't heard much from Blakstad. More closed off." Oh God, Marco hoped it was the willing one. Marco nodded. "Good. I'll have him call you, yoi." Pops nodded. "Good, let us try to not be too worried." Marco nodded, he would try.
He tried not to be too worried as Pops left, but when he saw Thatch half an hour later, he got the man's attention. "Hey, Thatch. Wasn't you at Ace's place last week, yoi?" Thatch nodded. "Yeah, I was. Needed to pick something up." Marco nodded. "Did things seem… okay?" Thatch hummed. "His house was like really dark, probably had late shifts maybe and closed all the curtains, even bought a small curtain to the non-see through one at his door, probably to keep light out. Maybe a bit tired. Why do you wonder?." Marco frowned. If what Ace had said was true, he hadn't been out of the house in weeks, which probably meant work too. So why did he close all the curtains? Marco shook his head. "No reason, I just wondered, yoi. I haven't seen him in a bit." Thatch nodded. "Same, he usually calls often, but he hasn't in the last weeks actually." Same with him and Pops then, maybe something really was wrong? He gave a bye to Thatch and went back to try and do some paperwork, waiting for Ace to call back again.
When his phone ran an hour later, he saw it wasn't Ace, but an unfamiliar number, and was on his way to send it to voicemail, when his app popped up, the one who searched up the number and then told who it was. White Bay's Memory Psychiatry Unit it read. He moved to answer it. "Marco Fishback." He hoped this had to do with Ace. He heard a hum. "Hi, Mr Fishback, this is Doctor Law Trafalgar, I'm calling from the Westside Bulwark Unit, a family member, your brother, has just been admitted here." Marco nodded. "I know, yoi. Is he okay?" The doctor hummed again. "He is okay, he wanted me to call as this is a bit overwhelming for him, but I would like to ask if you had the time to drop by in the next couple of days? So we could have a talk?" Yes, Marco wanted that and nodded. "I have the time, when does it fit for you and Ace, yoi?" He heard some papers rummaging. "Ace wants me to first have a talk with you alone, then we can see if we can have a meeting together." Okay, that wasn't exactly what he wanted, but it would have to do. "That's fine. Is it possible for Pops, our adoptive father, to join too?" "Yes," He heard from the other end. "That would be good, as Ace wants him updated too. How would tomorrow at noon fit? Could you also drop by his house and grab some clothes and such?" That was good and he nodded. "That fits well, and I can do that, I will see you then, yoi." The doctor answered. "Yes, we will. Have a good day, Mr Fishback." He nodded. "Same to you, Dr Trafalgar." Then they hung up, and Marco took a breath. He really hoped Ace was okay.
Marco moved his hand to his face, before he moved to Pops office, the man frowning when he saw him. "Have you spoken to Ace?" Marco shook his head as he sat down in a chair. "No, but I spoke to his doctor, he wants us in tomorrow at noon to speak, yoi. He said you could join if you have the time." Pops shook his head. "No, I will make time, this is more important than work." He agreed. Pops looked at him. "Did the doctor say anything specific?" Marco shook his head. "Not really, just that Ace was a bit overwhelmed, which I get, yoi. I am also going by his house to grab a few things." Pops nodded. "Okay, hopefully, he is okay." Marco hoped for the same.
When he was done at work, he went to Ace's house to grab a few things, and when he parked his car, the house looked… abandoned. The windows were dark as the curtains were drawn and he could see no light. When he went inside, opening the door with the key he had, he blinked as he got into the hallway. All the doors were closed. Ace didn't like to close the doors, as he had said it made the house feel smaller, so that was a weird thing. He walked up to Ace's room and the curtains were all drawn and doors closed. He grabbed a bag from his closet, and went and packed a few things. When he had, and was on his way to walk into his bathroom to grab a few things, he frowned when the door was closed, as in locked. That was weird, was someone there? "Hello?" He heard nothing, but the door was locked. He then went back to the bedroom and grabbed the key from the door, having seen that, before he moved to open the door to the bathroom, and it was empty, locked from outside. Why would Ace do that? He grabbed a few things, before he decided to check the rest of the house, and found 3 more locked doors, locked from the outside, most likely by Ace. He then grabbed Ace's laptop, so he had a few things to do if he wanted to watch a series or something.
When he was done, he left, calling Pops on his way home and told about the closed doors, which had Pops sigh. "That doesn't sound like Ace." Marco nodded, he agreed. "Hopefully, we get more information tomorrow, yoi." He really hoped for that.
When the next day came, they drove to the unit, they did see a few people here and there, but no Ace. They then got to the reception and said who they were, and were told to go to a couch and wait, being pointed to the right one. After that, it wasn't long before a man came and got them, introducing himself as the doctor they had spoken to. They were then led to an office, probably the doctor's.
As they sat down, the doctor looked at them. "Any questions before we start?" Marco nodded. "How is Ace? What is wrong with him, yoi?" The doctor gave a nod. "It is still early, but it does seem to be a form of paranoia." Marco frowned. "Paranoia?" The doctor nodded. "Yes. He is worried people are watching him and that there were people both following him and being inside his home." Marco blinked. "That's why he locked the doors and drew the curtains." He realized, and the doctor nodded. "Yes, it started as a small thought, but it slowly got worse in the last 3 weeks it seems like. Paranoia can manifest itself very fast, and be tough to handle by one self." Marco frowned. "How did no one notice anything, yoi?" he asked, looking at Pops, who looked lost himself. The doctor sighed. "This is no one's fault. Ace has been trying to handle it, and went to his doctor yesterday, who deemed this stay necessary, which we agreed on when he called us and explained. He is in good hands here." He didn't doubt that.
He looked at the doctor. "Is there anything we can do?" The doctor hummed. "Just be there for him. He was very scared to worry you and felt like he was in the way, which could be from the paranoia. How about we meet again in 2 days, on Thursday, and we can speak more and most likely have Ace here too. I am working closely with Ace and will continue to do that." That sounded very good and he nodded. They then wrapped it up, before they left, Marco handing the bag he had to a nurse, who would take it to Ace.
When they were back in the car, Marco sighed. "I wished we had noticed, yoi." Pops nodded. "I agree, but he is getting the help he needs now, and that is the most important." That was true. He needed to focus on that, and he hoped he would get more information when they saw Ace on Thursday. For now, he would try and not worry too much, Ace was in good hands.
-x-
Ace sighed as he looked at his room. It wasn't a large room, but a room. He had two chairs, a bed, a small table, a sink and mirror. He honestly didn't need more, and the room was in plain colors. He wasn't sure how he felt about this, being admitted, as he had been for a day now. It was very… overwhelming. He felt a bit better than what he had yesterday, which might be a couple of reasons for, maybe since he had been here a day now, or that he had gotten some medication to calm his mind, which he felt helped, and it helped a lot.
He had just changed clothes, wanting to feel comfy and put on some loose clothes in plain colors, and he moved to look at his laptop and watch his series, glad Marco had brought it. He gave a sigh as he thought of Marco and Pops, the two must be so confused, and Ace didn't know what to do with that fact. He had tried to call Pops, but he had been busy, the reason he called Marco. The doctor said he needed to tell someone, and he trusted Pops and Marco.
He had been slowly feeling himself getting more and more… paranoid. At first, it was just a small thought when he was driving, that the car behind him was following him, but it always quickly disappeared as that was stupid. Who would follow him? Then he had been scared of people watching him when he was home. Feeling like he was being watched. At first, it had just been too close to the curtain where he could see the road and neighbors, but then it got worse. He started to close more and more windows with curtains, before it was all closed off. For some reason, even though he knew it was a stupid thought, he needed to even buy a small curtain for the one on his door, which was a non-see through window. But, he was sure someone was watching him, and he didn't like it. He had called in sick the last 2 weeks, not wanting to go outside his house. He was sure someone was following him. He didn't know who, but it was someone who wanted to harm him, and he felt mostly safe at home.
Then he didn't anymore. He felt like someone was inside his house, and he didn't know why he felt that, but he did. He was scared to open doors and head into some of the rooms, sure someone who wanted him harm was behind it, so he did the logical thing to do; he locked the door, locking the person inside. There was a logical, small, thought in his mind which went like 'don't be stupid.' Especially when he was heading out one day, and he had a small hallway by the main door, which had always been locked the last few weeks, so no one could come inside. But in that small hallway, there was a small bathroom with just a toilet, and there were no windows, meaning no one could have come inside without him noticing. But no, he was sure, he had never been as sure at something in his entire life, that there was someone behind that door, hiding and waiting for him to go to the hallways and then attack him. He had a door before the hallway, which he had locked. But now, now he was stuck inside his home, he couldn't go out the door as someone was in that bathroom, waiting for him.
He didn't know what to do, and tried to think of a plan, but found none. And that lasted for an hour, and he needed to go out and try to shop, but he couldn't. The bathroom door was also open, as in not locked, and he wouldn't be fast enough to lock it before he was attacked. And he wouldn't be fast enough to get outside before he was attacked either. But after an hour, he took a deep breath, standing at the ready, before he opened the door and ran outside, and nothing happened, that was good. He was safe now. But now, he was stuck outside. But, he saw his neighbor was in his yard, so if he went and opened the door, to get the intruder out, the neighbor would hear him scream if he tried to attack. Yes, that was a good plan. So, he went and opened the door, ready to scream.
But the bathroom was empty. No one was there. And it made him feel so stupid for beliving what he had. So, with a loud sigh, he closed the door, and as soon as it was closed, boom, someone was behind that door. No! He had just checked, and there was no one there, and this was the only way inside. But no, his stupid mind was so sure of it, like he was sure 2 plus 2 was 4. Someone was behind that door. He then moved to lock the door, so no one could come outside, before he went to shop.
But as he was shopping, he barely was able to walk around as he felt followed. And when he tried to grab a piece of bread, one of the fresh ones, his mind went 'what if the ones following you poisoned it?' So, he didn't buy one, he went and bought bread that was frozen and not as easily poisoned. He couldn't buy anything that was fresh, or anything that wasn't packaged properly, as there was a chance someone would poison it. So, he didn't buy a lot.
He then went to drive home, and as he was almost home, there was a car behind him, and that car was following him. And he was almost home, but he didn't feel safe enough to go home, and decided to take a long trip in a circle, to get rid of the guy, and it worked. He took off on another road, probably bored. Then he got home and took the wares inside. The bathroom door was still locked- he could see the lock in the crack between the door and the wall- so no one could ambush him.
He still felt like someone was watching him, then another thought entered his mind. What if someone had put a camera or microphone inside his house? Hidden it? Oh God, how would he handle that? He decided the best cause of action was to play the radio on a somewhat high level, so the ones listening to him would hear that and not him. As the day progressed, which was a Saturday, he decided something was wrong here. A normal person didn't feel like this, and he felt so utterly tired. Before he went to bed, he needed to close all 3 doors between outside and his bedroom, and check them multiple times, before he put on his alarm, and then try to sleep, which he didn't do much of. He did decide that this was stupid, he knew it was stupid, but it felt so… real. So, he took his phone and opened his app to the doctor and wrote a message about how he had been the last weeks, and how it felt like it had gotten worse. He knew his doctor was a busy man, so he probably didn't have an available appointment before the end of the week.
But when Monday came, he got a message that he had an appointment in 1 hour, which made him frown. Must be a cancellation. When he got to the doctor, he still felt like someone was watching him and following him. But, when he got to see the doctor, the man looked worriedly at him, and asked him to explain what he felt, and Ace did his best. When his doctor asked who was following him or listening to him or trying to poison him, Ace said he didn't know who, but someone who wanted to hurt him. The doctor said these weren't good thoughts, which he knew, but he couldn't stop them, he had tried. When he said how he had been stuck inside his house, the doctor mentioned a stay at a psychiatric unit, which had him frowning. No, he didn't want to be admitted. When he said that, the doctor said that he could choose, to go willingly, or to be forced, being honest about it. Was he that sick? Maybe he was. He asked a bit about the unit, and it sounded nice in a way, to get a break from being followed.
The doctor had then called the unit and asked for a bed for him, and they had it. And that he would need to drive there now and get himself admitted. When Ace said he needed to go home first, the doctor said no. Ace would need to go to the unit at once, and he could have a family member or friend drop by with some things, also mentioning that he needed to tell someone where he was going, and that he now had sick leave for a month for now, and if he needed more, to call him up. It had him nod and he went to the unit, calling Pops as he drove, but no answer, probably busy. So, who could he call? Thatch? No, that wouldn't work. He didn't want him to know of this. Curiel? He was a doctor. No, he would know too much of this. Marco? Yes, Marco was good. So he had called and he tried to speak fast, but it was clear he spoke too fast a couple times. Marco also sounded worried, which he got, but he would call again in a bit.
When he finally arrived at the unit, he was taken into an office where a doctor met him, who had on plain clothes, that was a bit weird, as he was a doctor. He explained how he had felt, and the doctor said he would be here for a bit, maybe 3-4 weeks, to get him both stabilized and to try some medication. That sounded good. Not that he would be here for 3 weeks, but medication, maybe it would get his mind to stop being like this. When the doctor mentioned calling Marco for him, he instantly said yes, he didn't want to worry Marco more, so he let the doctor handle it, and the doctor said that was fine. He felt a lot was happening at once here and he felt… overwhelmed, which the doctor got. He also said that if it would be possible, to call Pops also, and the doctor said he would. He then was led to a room he would be staying in, which he now sat in, and it was a bit comfortable. It had a huge window though, which he dragged the curtains to, to not feel like the people could see inside. There also was a view to another room, a closet he had found out when he asked a nurse- who also had normal clothes on- but he always felt like when he saw that way, there was someone inside that room watching him, and every time he looked, they would duck away.
He did tell this to a nurse, who said that door was almost always locked, but it didn't help his mind to realise it was stupid. He also got a few pills to help him sleep, which felt… great. He could finally sleep. He still felt tired a lot, and was told that was since his mind was going on overtime now, making all these things up took its toll on him, but the medication he had gotten did help a lot. He still had the thoughts, but they weren't as… deafening as they had been. Maybe he did need this stay here? He was growing more okay with it, and he did feel like he could relax a bit, probably because of the medication. But he still felt tired in his mind and body, and the doctor, who he had 2 sessions a day with for now, said that it might be because he had been on the alert for so long, and finally got a break from it. And that did make sense. Now, he just needed to prepare himself for the meeting where Pops and Marco would come, he needed to face them anyhow, and this would be scary, but he needed to tell someone and he wanted them to know how he was feeling, although that also sounded scary.
-x-
Whitebeard walked into the psych unit, hoping to see Ace, which he didn't, and he didn't see Ace as the doctor came and got them. When they were seated in the doctor's office, the doctor looked at them. "A nurse is getting Ace." Okay, so they would see Ace today, that was good. He nodded, on his way to ask something when the door opened and Ace came in with a woman, probably a nurse. Ace also looked… worn and tired. He had plain loose clothes on. Ace gave a weak smile to them, before he moved to sit down in a chair, legs up with him in the seat, something he did when he felt unsure. Whitebeard looked at his son. "How are you doing, son?" Ace gave a small nod. "Okay." Nope, did not believe it, Ace didn't look okay.
The doctor gave a breath and looked at them. "Do you have any new questions from last time?" Both he and Marco shook their heads, Whitebeard speaking. "No, not really. We're just worried." The doctor nodded. "Which is understandable." The doctor then looked at Ace. "Do you have anything you want to say before I go on?" Ace shook his head. "No, not really." The doctor nodded. "That is fine." He then looked at them. "Ace is doing better, he is responding to the medication well thus far." If Ace was doing better and he looked like he did, he really must have been bad before. The doctor looked at some writings in a book he had. "We have planned to keep him here for 3 more weeks, maybe 4, depending on how things move along. Worst case scenario, 5 weeks." Both he and Marco nodded, that was a long stay potentially. The doctor then hummed as he looked at them. "We do want to send him home on weekends, but not the first one, waiting until he is more stable. I would like for you to keep an eye out when he is home, to see if he regresses, Ace also agrees on this." He gave a small frown and looked at Ace, who gave a nod. He felt like they were keeping him a bit in the dark about how ill Ace actually was. But he would take it later.
The doctor then spoke a bit more, Ace nodding as he agreed on what the doctor said, and after a bit, the doctor nodded, looking at Ace. "Do you have something you want to say?" Ace gave a nod and looked at them. "I know the dinner is on Sunday, but I really don't want to worry everyone…" Whitebeard shook his head. "Don't worry about that, we will just say you are busy." Ace nodded and looked thankful. The doctor then rounded it up, before he said they could leave, and that he wanted Ace to stay a bit more. Whitebeard nodded and stood up, moving to hug Ace. "I hope this stay helps, son. Speak to you later." Ace nodded and hugged back. "Yeah, we will." Marco did the same, before they left, and when they got to the car, Marco sighed. "He looked so… worn, yoi." Whitebeard nodded. "This must be a lot for Ace too. He doesn't want to worry us, which I get in a way, but I am worried." Marco nodded, hand moving to his face. "Yeah, I agree. Hopefully he will get better, yoi." He hoped for the same.
They then started the drive home, and he hoped Ace would be better soon and get home again. When the weekend did come and everyone was gathered and asked for Ace, he said Ace was busy, but would most likely come next weekend. And everyone understood that. They did have a meetup next weekend too, as they often did when Christmas was nearing.
For now, he just hoped Ace would be fine and get better.
-x-
Ace gave a sigh, knowing he should try and not be inside his room all the time, as he currently was. The times he wasn't in his room, was during meals and when he was with the doctor, or went to get his medication. So, he took a breath, before he went out of the room, being sure to lock the door, just in case, before he walked to the common area. When he got there a few were there, mostly nurses, but there were two others there. Everyone did go in normal clothes, as in not nurses or doctor outfits, but you could see that the nurses had a large phone and a name tag, and a card that stated that they worked here around their neck.
He did feel watched as he walked and sat down, and he hoped this feeling would let up soon. As he sat down, those who worked here gave a smile, same with the other two, one of them, a young man around his age he guessed, moved his hand out. "Hi, I'm Luffy." Ace gave a smile as he shook his hand. "Hi, I'm Ace." Luffy gave a smile. "You're not out a lot, I've barely seen you." Ace nodded. "I know, I am not the best at it." He did feel a bit bad because of it. Luffy shrugged. "Nah. My first time here, I didn't go out for a week, not even for meals." Ace blinked. "You've been here before?" Luffy nodded. "This is my 3rd time. It is a nice place to get a break from whatever you're dealing with." Ace nodded, he got that. He then spoke a bit with Luffy, before he said he was about to go watch some TV, and invited him to the TV room they had. And they sat on a show that they wanted to see, which started in a bit. But, just before it started, more people came to watch, and Ace, who was dumb enough to sit down in the corner of the U-shaped couch, was now trapped behind a woman, who sat by the end, and there was a table in the middle. He was stuck, but he could survive this for this show, it only lasted half an hour.
But then, his mind started to reel. What if his room was on fire? He had the curtains drawn, and there was an oven by the curtains, what if that had caught fire since he drew the curtains? No no, the fire alarm would go off then. Then he blinked. What if it didn't work in his room? What if he would now burn this entire place down? And it would be all his fault since he had drawn the curtains. After a minute, Luffy looked at him. "Are you okay?" Ace nodded and did his best to give a smile. "Sure." No, he was not okay, he was currently burning this place down.
Then there was an ad break, and the woman who sat beside him moved, and that made him able to stand up and hurriedly walk to his room, and when he got there, he was a bit scared to open the door, but he needed to. So, with a deep breath, he did, and guess what? There was no fire. He gave a breath, why was his mind like this? He then locked the door again, and walked back to the TV room, and this time, he sat down on the other side of Luffy, so he wasn't trapped anymore, he could leave, which was easier. The idea still popped into his mind, that his room was on fire, but he would try and stay outside and watch this show, before he would walk back to his room. And it was still not on fire.
He would do his best to try and be outside his room, and try to open his curtains more, as when he got home, he needed to try and keep the curtains open and not drawn shut. Which would be incredibly hard he felt like. He was actually not looking forward to the weekend he would go home. As he was sitting in his room and watching a show on his laptop, there came a message from Marco, who asked if he and/or Pops could come visit him, and that sounded nice, so he said yes, they could probably come in some days, as Ace wanted a bit of a break from everything. But he didn't want to shut everyone out. He just hoped these thoughts would end.
And that's the first chapter! I hope you enjoyed it
I'm not sure how long the next chapter will be or when it will be out, but hopefully within a month
For this chapter and paranoia. Paranoia can come extremely fast, and can be a mix of logical things and non-logical things. A logical paranoia can be to check a door once to be sure you locked it after already checking it once. Non-logical is like you're being followed, when you are not, or feeling people are watching you or listening to you, or that there is someone out there who wants to harm you, without having a reason as to why. Paranoia that is bad is often when it starts to affect your normal day. Paranoia can be crippling at times, depending on the severity. How to treat it will come more into light in the next chapter, and I hope I will see you there!
