Finn sprinted past trees and vines and up to Poe who was directing rebels to various areas for clean-up, and planetary travel. Finn stopped in front of Poe abruptly, almost running into him.
"Poe…" Finn breathed hard and took a small moment to calm himself then frantically cried "Kylo Ren is gone!"
Poe turned to his friend and with his hands on his hips he sighed, took a deep look in Finn's eyes, and tersely replied "I know."
Finn jerked his head back in confusion "You know? What do you mean you know? Where did he go?"
"Where do you think he went?" Poe asked with a mixture of annoyance and amusement. He walked past Finn to attend to another rebel. Finn put his face in his hands and with a frustrated sigh, he slid his hands from his face and put his arms on his hips. He turned his heels and followed Poe.
"Are you saying you let Rey release a war criminal?" Finn cried out.
His attention fixated on something else Poe began to explain "Look Finn, I know you're worried about Rey, but you've got to lay off bud. She is more than capable of taking care of herself and I'm not worried about Ben."
Finn got closer to Poe "Not worried about Ben? He's a powerful force user, who was the Supreme Leader of a tyrannical government." Finn squeaked "and since when are we calling him Ben? He does one good thing and suddenly he gets off the hook?"
Poe returned his attention to Finn "Look Finn.." he said with more annoyance than amusement in his eyes "Ben Solo is of no use to us sitting in a cell on Ajan Kloss. It's martial law right now, I'm more concerned with helping to reestablish the Republic than I am with babysitting Solo Jr." Poe animated his hands to stress his point "We can't kill him, it wouldn't be right, and you know Rey would never forgive us."
Finn snickered, "What are you really concerned about? Upsetting Rey, or touching General Organa's traitorous son?"
Poe tensed up and sharply retorted "Are you really concerned about a dark sider on the loose, or are you concerned Rey would rather run off with him instead of you?!" Poe jabbed a finger into Finn's chest.
Finn stepped back, his mouth pressing together and his jaw tensing. "…what does it matter?" He breathed. "You'd still be responsible for letting that monster go."
Poe sighed "Finn, your Rey's friend. She trusts you. Maybe it's time you start putting more trust in her. You've got to see that both you and I will never understand her the same way as Ren. I don't understand it, yet here we are!"
"Of course I trust Rey!" Finn replied, "But I don't trust Kylo Ren. Not after everything he's done."
"What if he isn't Kylo Ren anymore?" Poe suggested, "He helped Rey save the entire galaxy."
"And that's enough to pardon him?" retorted Finn his arms out in a questioning gesture.
"Why not?" Poe asked, "It was enough for you."
Finn threw his face backward in astonishment, his eyes wide and his mouth relaxing; slightly parting. "That's different." He argued after his small moment of surprise. "I was manipulated and brainwashed."
"And what if Ren was?" Poe proposed "What if Ben Solo was manipulated?"
Finn squawked abruptly, "He killed his father in cold blood."
"And you've killed stormtroopers!" Poe screamed. Finn shut his mouth again and stared at Poe in anger and frustration. Poe stepped forward almost nose to nose with Finn, "What makes you different from him huh? Just because he's a big shot from a legendary family means he has to be made an example? Why don't we bring him out here, execute him in front of the rebels and call it a day huh? It's obvious he's the only one who has regrets." Poe cast his gaze down, "The only one whose choices cost people their lives."
Finn slackened his face. He became remorseful in his countenance. Finally catching on to Poe's sorrow and hurt. They've both had to make tough calls. Ones that resulted in heartbreaking sacrifices.
"I'm sorry... for what I said about General Organa." Finn looked down at Poe's feet. "Maybe, you're right."
Poe smirked at Leia's memory. "You know I always wanted Leia to see me as a son. She was a mother to us all. But I can't stop kidding myself. She was always waiting for her real son. She always had hoped he would change… return to her." Poe kicked the moss under his foot, his arms folded. The vulnerability of the moment made him uncomfortable, "What kind of man would I be to crush that hope, after she died for it?" Poe slowly let his eyes lift to meet Finn's, his eyebrows furrowed in an uncharacteristic seriousness. Finn just stared back and then nodded somberly.
After a while of silence, Finn inquired "What are you going to do once people find out about this?"
"I'll announce once the Falcon goes off world." Poe put a hand on Finn's shoulder. "And really, don't worry about Ben Solo. We took precautions. He's not going to be much trouble for now." He smirked.
"What precautions?" Finn asked.
"Let's just say, the food Rose gave him did a little more than pause his physical motor skills. I don't understand the whole science of it all, but story short he won't be able to lift even a womp rat's tail with the force unless Rey decides to train him again." Poe chuckled.
Finn looked up in disbelief and then down at the ground shaking his head and then demanded "Why didn't you lead with that?"
Poe playfully slapped Finn's arm and then returned to his business. Their demeanors become friendly once again "You overthink things," Poe stated
"I overthink things?" Finn guffawed. The forest moon became boisterous once again…
