Dr. Anna sent them to Dr. Olivia Matthews, a very nice gastroenterologist who worked with children as well as adults.
Chloe and Beca went to the visit and, sure enough, Dr. Olivia asked for a colonoscopy so she could know what kind of tumor it was.
So both Chloe and Beca went with Sophie on that morning while Nikki stayed home with Leslie and Charlotte.
Sophie was scared when she was asked to disrobe but Beca was allowed inside with her so that calmed her down.
"Okay Sophie, now you're gonna get an IV fluid that's gonna help you sleep and when you wake up, it'll all be over." A nurse explained gently.
"Is it gonna hurt?" Sophie asked with a small voice.
"You're not gonna feel a thing." The nurse smiled.
"Okay. Mommy, hold my hand." Sophie asked. Beca smiled and grabbed her hand. "Does it have to be a needle, miss? I don't like needles."
Sophie had tears starting to fall from her eyes.
"Sorry honey, but it only stings for a second." The nurse said. "Be real brave now."
Sophie shut her eyes tight and held Beca's hand tight. The brunette kissed her forehead and brought her mouth close to her ear.
"It's okay, honey, mommy's here." She said in a soothing voice. "Mommy's here, baby."
Sophie started crying when the nurse injected the needle and Beca's heart almost broke.
"Okay Sophie, now we're gonna move you to your side." The nurse said and helped the girl to her left side.
Sophie stopped crying and she started feeling sleepy.
"Beca, I'm gonna ask you to move her at times okay?" Dr. Olivia said after Sophie fell asleep.
Usually, the person would stay awake during a colonoscopy so the doctor could give them instructions to move if needed but that was why Beca was there and Dr. Olivia thought it would be better that way, since Sophie was a child.
After the colonoscopy was done, two nurses moved the bed to the recovery room with Beca trailing right behind. She stood next to Sophie as the girl started waking up.
"Hey So." Beca said softly as Sophie blinked. "It's time to wake up, we're going home now."
Sophie was super sleepy, acting kinda like a drunk person, her head hanging and her eyes half shut as the nurses took the IV and helped her to her feet.
"Come on, baby, let's go get dressed." Beca said as she picked Sophie up carefully and took her to a small dressing room. She grabbed the child's clothes and a nurse led her to the bathroom, where Beca proceeded to wipe the lube the doctor had used and to make sure Sophie didn't need to go to the bathroom.
"I'm hungryyyy." Sophie whined, her head still hanging but she could hold it better now.
"We're gonna go downstairs to see mamma and go home." Beca said. "Aunt Aubrey and Aunt Stacie are coming over and they're making aca moly!"
Sophie managed a smile but it looked crooked in her current state.
"Come on, baby." Beca flushed the toilet and wiped Sophie before putting on her clothes.
Beca had to carry Sophie on her hip downstairs to the lobby where Chloe was waiting. The redhead smiled and stood up.
"Where is my brave girl?" Chloe asked, seeing Sophie's head buried in the crook of Beca's neck.
"Me." Sophie said softly.
"Yes you are! Let's go home and take a nap?" Chloe asked.
Sophie nodded.
"Okay, we're gonna make you some lunch, mamma has to back to work in the afternoon but I'm gonna stay with you." Beca smiled.
"Yaay!" Sophie said sleepily which made both mothers laugh.
"I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Olivia for Wednesday next week, it's when the biopsy will be ready." Beca said.
"Okay." Chloe said.
The two took Sophie home and Chloe made her some chicken soup with chicken, potatoes, rice and carrots. They put Sophie on their bed and helped her eat while she was still dizzy. Then Chloe kissed her forehead and went back to the office.
Sophie fell asleep quickly after she ate, which didn't surprise Beca, but Sophie did climb onto her lap so the brunette stayed there watching TV, placing a thin blanket on top of them both.
oO0Oo
The week went by slower than the mothers wished but when the day of the appointment finally came, both mothers wanted to go, so, again, Nikki had to stay with Leslie and Charlotte.
"Mommy, can she remove the tumor now?" Sophie asked.
"Not yet, baby." Chloe answered. "Now she's gonna tell us what kind of tumor it is."
"Okay." Sophie sighed.
People in the living room gave them sympathetic looks, which Beca was starting to hate. She hated those sympathetic looks, she wanted to smack people who looked at her like that. Her family was going through enough, people should just leave them alone.
"Sophie Beale-Mitchell." Dr. Olivia called.
"Yaay!" Sophie stood up and ran to hug her doctor. "Dr. Olivia, when can you remove my tumor?"
"We're gonna talk about it now, sweetie." Dr. Olivia smiled and Sophie went inside while the doctor greeted her mothers.
Beca and Chloe sat in front of the doctor nervously while Dr. Olivia grabbed the biopsy results.
"Okay, here's the good news: Sophie has a gastrointestinal neoplasm." Dr. Olivia said before looking up at Chloe and Beca.
"I thought it was called tumor." Sophie said confused.
Dr. Olivia chuckled.
"Well sweetie, that's what your tumor is called. The kind of tumor you have." Dr. Olivia explained. "And it means this is a benign tumor."
Chloe and Beca sighed in deep relief and hugged each other.
"What does this mean?" Sophie asked with a frown.
"It means it's a silly tumor who is not gonna make you really really sick." Dr. Olivia said to the child before turning to her mothers. "If it wasn't causing her pain and discomfort, it wouldn't need to be removed but since it is, we're gonna remove it."
"Oh God, is she gonna need surgery?" Chloe asked.
"Yes. The size of her tumor is small but it can't be removed during a colonoscopy. But it'll be a small surgery, small risks and she will have a tiny scar." Dr. Olivia said. "Now, gastrointestinal neoplasms are very rare in children so we're gonna take a deep look into Sophie so we can try to discover what's caused it."
"Okay." Chloe and Beca asked.
"Wait, how small is her tumor?" Beca asked.
"It's not much smaller than a golf ball." Dr. Olivia said.
"Wait, are you gonna put more things in my butt so you can look at me?" Sophie pouted.
"No, honey. This time, they're gonna open your tummy to take out the tumor, okay?" Dr. Olivia said.
"Are you gonna open my tummy?" Sophie asked.
"Not me, my colleague will do it, but he's very sweet." Dr. Olivia smiled. "If you want, I can come see you before he puts you to sleep."
"Yay!" Sophie smiled.
"So I'm gonna schedule the surgery for the day after tomorrow, on Friday, at 9 am so the prep can start as soon as today." Dr. Olivia said. "The prep is gonna be the same as that for a colonoscopy."
"Okay." Chloe said.
"We're gonna use the lavage method again, using magnesium citrate to clean her intestine and the glycerin suppository the night before." Dr. Olivia said.
"Okay." The two women nodded.
"And since this will be a longer procedure, we'll keep her hospitalized for a longer period." Dr. Olivia said.
"Okay, how much longer?" Beca asked.
"Just a few hours longer until she fully wakes up, she'll go home the same day." Dr. Olivia said. "Then I'm gonna see her a week later for a follow up."
"Okay." Beca said with a sigh and a smile.
"I have the medication you're gonna need for the preparation here." Dr. Olivia said and put two boxes on the desk and a bunch of paperwork.
"Thank you." Beca said.
"And I'll see you, little lady, in two days!" Dr. Olivia said. "And we're gonna kiss that tumor goodbye."
"Yay!" Sophie grinned. "Wait, is it gonna hurt?"
"Not at all, you're gonna sleep through it." Dr. Olivia smiled.
"Okay." Sophie said.
Chloe and Beca smiled before the three women stood up.
"We're gonna call nana, papa, grandma and grandpa when we get home." Chloe said while they went to the parking lot.
"And Aunt Bee and Aunt Tacie." Sophie said.
"Of course." Beca said.
"Mommy, mamma, are you gonna be with me?" Sophie asked as she held Chloe and Beca's hands.
"Of course! Both mamma and I are gonna be there with you. Now, they probably won't allow us into the operation room with you but we're gonna stay there with you until you fall asleep." Beca said.
"Okay." Sophie said.
"And after you wake up, mamma and I are gonna be there as well as your sisters." Beca smiled.
"What about grandma, grandpa, nana, papa, Aunt Tacie, Aunt Bee, Joel and Nat?" Sophie pouted as Beca put her on her booster seat and fastened the seatbelt.
"They're gonna all be there for dinner to see you." Beca smiled.
"Okay." Sophie said.
Chloe got in the passenger seat and Beca got in the driver's seat and started the car.
"Now Sophie, after surgery, Dr. Olivia says here you're not allowed to exercise for a while and for the first few days, you're only allowed to eat foods of easy digestion." Chloe read. "And for the first three days you're mostly gonna be in bed, mommy and I or your sisters or Nikki are gonna help you go potty and take a shower."
"That sounds boring, mamma." Sophie pouted.
"I know, but it's only for a few days, baby." Chloe said. "After that, you'll be as good as new, no more tumor."
"Okay then." Sophie said.
oO0Oo
Chloe packed a small bag for Sophie while Beca helped the girl get dressed, of course she was sleepy.
"Mamma, where awe you going?" Leslie asked sleepily as she rubbed her eye.
"Remember what we talked about yesterday? That Sophie needs to go to the hospital because she has a little ball inside her tummy?" Chloe asked.
"Yeah." Leslie said with a pout.
"Yeah, so that's where mommy and I are going. Later, when Sophie wakes up, Nikki is gonna bring you and Char to see her." Chloe said. "Okay?"
"Okay." Leslie said.
"Good." Chloe smiled and kissed her forehead. "I love you, baby."
"I wove you too." Leslie wrapped her arms sleepily around Chloe's neck.
"Mommy and I are gonna be back soon." Chloe said softly. "Speaking of that, this weekend and the next few days, mommy and I are gonna have to pay more attention to Sophie, but that doesn't mean we won't pay any attention to you or Char. But Sophie is gonna have a boo boo and she's gonna love it if you and Char help her too."
"Can I give her a pwesent?" Leslie asked.
"When you come visit her at the hospital?" Chloe asked and Leslie nodded. "Sure baby! I'll tell you what: I'm gonna give Nikki 50 dollars so she can take you and Char out to buy Sophie a nice present, okay?"
"Okay." Leslie said with a nod.
"Make sure Char helps you choose." Chloe winked.
"Okay." Leslie said again. "Thank you, mamma."
Chloe smiled and kissed the girl's head.
"Now go, mommy and I need to get going." Chloe said.
"I have to say bye bye to lil So So." Leslie said.
"Come on." Chloe grabbed the bag and Leslie's hand and they went to the front door where Beca and Sophie were waiting.
"Hey little Leslie!" Beca said with a smile.
"So, someone wants to say bye." Chloe said.
Leslie hugged Sophie tight.
"Bye bye, lil So So." Leslie said. "Good luck with your boo boo."
"Thank you, little Leslie!" Sophie hugged Leslie back. "I love you."
"I wove you." Leslie smiled and pulled back.
Charlotte came down, still wearing her pj's and looking very sleepy. She did manage a smile at Sophie though.
"Good luck there, squirt." Charlotte said before hugging Sophie tight, lifting her from the ground.
"Thank you, Char!" Sophie smiled.
"I love you, I'll see you later." Charlotte smiled and put Sophie down.
"I love you too." Sophie said.
"Bye girls, we'll see you later." Chloe smiled at her other two daughters and her and Beca went to Beca's Audi, leaving the Sienna so Nikki could use it if she had to.
oO0Oo
Sophie was very nervous, Chloe and Beca were by her side but she was still scared. She was afraid it would hurt but her mothers and the doctor were assuring her it wouldn't.
"Hey Sophie." Dr. Olivia knocked on the door and came in.
"Dr. Olivia!" Sophie grinned.
"How are you?"
"I'm scared." Sophie said.
"Don't worry, honey. The only scary part is the anesthesia but that will be over quickly." Dr. Olivia said.
"Okay." Sophie said.
"Now, Dr. Thomas is coming to give you the anesthesia, I'm gonna stay here by your side okay?" Dr. Olivia said.
"Thank you." Sophie said.
Dr. Olivia smiled and Dr. Thomas came in followed by a nurse with a smile.
Both Beca and Chloe held Sophie's hand as the doctor put the IV on her arm. She didn't cry this time but she was still scared.
After Sophie fell asleep, Dr. Thomas and the nurse took her to the OR while Beca and Chloe were led to the waiting room.
Their parents called a bunch of times but the women said they didn't need to come until Sophie woke up. They managed to take a nap until the nurse that had helped Dr. Thomas came out and shook them awake.
"Mrs. and Mrs. Mitchell? Sophie is in recovery, the surgery went great." She said.
Chloe and Beca breathed in relief and hugged each other tight.
"When can we see her?" Beca asked.
"Well she's still asleep. She'll be moved to a private room soon and we'll call you." The nurse said.
"Thank you." Chloe smiled and the nurse left.
The two women took this time to call their parents, Aubrey, Stacie, Zoe and Nikki.
30 minutes later, the same nurse came back with a smile.
"She's in her room and she's waking up." She said.
"Great! Let's go see our baby." Chloe stood up and her and her wife followed the nurse back to Sophie's room.
Chloe and Beca hurried to Sophie's sides as the girl stirred before she opened her eyes and started to cry.
"Hey! Hey, baby, don't cry!" Chloe said, gently caressing her forehead.
"Don't cry, baby, mamma and I are here." Beca kissed Sophie's cheek.
Sophie quickly stopped crying and yawned.
"How do you feel, baby?" Chloe asked.
"My tummy hurts." Sophie whined.
"Baby, the doctor will come soon and maybe she'll give you something for the pain, alright?" Chloe said and Sophie nodded.
"Guess who's coming?" Beca smiled.
"Who?" Sophie asked.
"Nikki, Char and Leslie." Beca smiled. "They're bringing you a present for being such a brave girl."
"I'm getting a present?" Sophie cheered up a little bit.
"Oh yeah! Later today, we're gonna make dinner, all the grandparents are coming, your aunts, uncle Thomas, your cousins…" Chloe said.
"They're all coming?" Sophie asked.
"Yep. They're all coming to see you." Chloe smiled.
"That's good." Sophie smiled.
Dr. Olivia and Dr. Thomas came in, a nurse following them.
"Hey Sophie, how are you feeling?" Dr. Olivia asked.
"My tummy hurts." Sophie said.
"We're gonna give you something for the pain." Dr. Olivia nodded. "And we're gonna wait a little bit until we give you lunch, okay?"
"Doc, our nanny is coming, is it okay if she brings chicken noodle soup?" Chloe asked.
"Sure." Dr. Olivia smiled at Sophie.
"Okay, thanks." Chloe smiled.
"Yeah, thanks." Sophie said.
Sophie didn't have an IV anymore, so the nurse left to get the medication while both doctors left as well.
After the nurse gave her the medication, it kicked in pretty quickly so they brought Sophie to a sitting position and she felt a lot better.
There was a knock on the door and Nikki opened it, followed by a smiling Leslie and a smiling Charlotte.
"Hey, where's our brave girl?" Nikki asked.
"Me!" Sophie smiled as she raised her left hand.
"Leslie and Char brought something for you." Nikki said.
Leslie grinned and handed Sophie a big bag. Beca picked Leslie up so she could watch as her sister opened the bag.
"It's a nurse doll!" Sophie grinned. The doll was the size of an American Doll, but it was softer, the face looked different, she had curly red hair tied in a ponytail, she was wearing a nurse costume and a nurse hat.
"See? It's you as a nurse." Charlotte said. "Leslie picked her out."
"Char helped me." Leslie said.
"Thank you, Char, thank you little Leslie." Sophie smiled.
"And I brought you some soup." Nikki said, placing a plastic bag with a container on the table next to Sophie's bed.
"Can I eat it? I'm super hungry." Sophie said.
Beca sat on the couch with Leslie on her lap, Charlotte took a seat next to her.
"We'll call Dr. Thomas and see if you can eat now." Chloe said before pressing the button for the nurse.
A nurse came and told Sophie she was okay to eat, which she was happy about.
Chloe helped her eat, happy that Sophie was eating a lot. And after she ate, the doctor came to examine her.
"Alright, I think she can go home soon." He said with a smile.
"Yay! Look, doctor, my sisters gave me a nurse doll!" Sophie showed him her new nurse doll and he smiled.
"That is great!" He said. "You got a doll for being a brave girl through everything right?"
Sophie nodded proudly.
"Moms, we'll wait a bit because I wanna see if she digests the soup okay and Dr. Matthews wants to wait until she goes to the bathroom." Dr. Thomas said. "And after that, I'll give you the medication if she feels pain and the recommendations for the next week."
"Okay, thank you." Beca smiled and the doctor left.
Sophie had a bit of pain to go to the bathroom so Dr. Olivia gave her some painkillers and gave the mothers the prescription for the same medication in case she continued to have that pain. She said to take it everytime she ate.
"Alright, I'm gonna get a nurse and a wheelchair so she can see you out." Dr. Olivia said.
"Does that mean I can go home?" Sophie asked.
"Yes it does." Dr. Olivia smiled.
"Yaay!" Sophie grinned.
"Now Sophie, you might be a bit sore now, it might hurt for you to stand upright so take it easy, okay?" Dr. Olivia said.
"Okay." Sophie said.
"And when you come back here in a week we'll see if we can take those stitches those stitches out." Dr. Olivia said.
"Okay." Sophie said.
The nurse and Chloe helped Sophie onto her wheelchair and the doctor was right, Sophie did feel some pain when she tried to stand upright, it felt like her skin was being stretched being its capacity.
Chloe wheeled Sophie out of the room while Dr. Olivia followed them. Beca held Leslie's hand and Nikki had the girls' bags.
Chloe helped Sophie buckle up, careful so it wouldn't hurt her because the seatbelt was right on the stitches. Nikki was going with Chloe in the two women's Sienna while Beca was taking her Audi Q3 with the three girls, since Leslie and Charlotte didn't want to leave their sister's side.
Arriving home, Nikki and Chloe helped Sophie off of her seat and Beca picked her up bridal style so she could take her inside. Chloe opened the door and let Beca in, not really surprised when their families and friends screamed 'Surprise!' as the brunette made her way in with Sophie.
"Wow! Mommy, everyone is here!" Sophie said as the guests chuckled.
The women's parents were dying to talk to Sophie so Beca sat her on the L shaped couch in the living room and everyone moved to the living room.
"How is our brave girl doing?" Ethan asked with a smile.
"I'm okay, grandpa." Sophie said. "Leslie and Char gave me a nurse doll!"
"Oh really? That's nice of them!" Ethan said.
"Yeah! Mommy?" Sophie called and Beca came in. "Where is my nurse doll? I wanna show it to grandpa."
"It's in the car honey, I'll go get it." Beca said.
"Sophie, do you know what nana helped me make?" Diane asked.
"What?" Sophie asked.
"Guacamole." Diane smiled. "Mommy told me the doctor said you were okay to eat it."
"I am, because Dr. Olivia took the silly tumor out. She said it was silly because it's not going to make me really sick."
"Yeah it was just a silly tumor." Diane said with a chuckle. "Do you want anything to drink, sweetheart?"
"Yes please grandma, I'm thirsty." Sophie said. "Can you get me some juice please?"
"Of course, I'm gonna get you some apple juice." Diane smiled.
Aubrey, Stacie, Natalie and Joel came almost running in. Natalie and Joel took a seat on the couch with Charlotte and Leslie while Aubrey and Stacie grabbed some chairs and sat close to the couch.
"Sweetie, we're so glad you're okay." Aubrey said with a smile.
"Of course I'm okay, Aunt Bree." Sophie said. "Now the silly tumor is gone!"
"Yeah." Aubrey chuckled. "We were very nervous here, waiting for your moms to let us know how surgery went."
"I don't know how it went, they gave me sleepy medicine." Sophie said and the adults chuckled. "So I didn't feel anything."
"That's great. We were all Team Sophie over here." Stacie smiled.
"Why Sophie? What about little Leslie, Char, Nat and Joel?" Sophie asked.
"Sophie, we were worried because you were in surgery." Charlotte explained. "You were the one whose tummy was being opened."
"Okay." Sophie said. "So stop worrying, I'm fine, my tummy is closed now."
The adults all chuckled. They found it so endearing that Sophie had no idea of the seriousness of what happened to her. She was a strong girl.
"Guys? Guys, who wants guacamole? Something we can all eat in the living room with our brave little So So!" Beca said and everyone cheered. "I need two adults to help me with the bowls."
Aubrey and Stacie immediately stood up to go help Beca.
Sophie was playing with her nurse doll as she hummed quietly and happily.
"I'm hungry, I'm glad we're gonna have aca moly." Sophie said.
The adults chuckled and they all smiled lovingly as they watched her. They were all so glad and relieved their little redheaded munchkin was okay.
