"Get behind me," I instructed and Nessie did as told, darting around me until she was hidden almost entirely from view. I sensed her panic pulsing through my fingers as she clutched to them. "You're okay," I breathed, "You're going to be okay."
"Don't lie to the girl, Jacob Black." Snickered the red-haired woman.
"That's just cruel." Added the man.
Though it hurt me, I pulled away from Renesmee and stepped towards the blood-suckers. Now, I didn't hold back. I let the fury and heat burn through me, flood my limbs with muscle and strength and the world around me shifted as I landed on all fours. I barked a growl their way and the two vampires stopped. A moment of hesitation, that's all, before they exchanged a certain look with one another, bared their teeth and charged.
I launched at them, swatting the woman aside with my paw and I knew from the surprised look on her face as she flipped back onto her heels that she hadn't realised how powerful we were.
"Jake!" Nessie yelled in warning and I felt the slice of immortal nails through my shoulders. I bit down, spinning and snapping again and again at the male that ducked and spun just out of reach…until Nessie ricocheted a stone by the side of the road off his temple. Surprised, he angled his head her way and snarled from deep within his throat.
It gave me the chance I needed to clamp down on his arm. His freezing fingers scratched at the inside of my mouth, tried to punch through the teeth I had locked deep into the stone of his body. Another second and I'd have removed the limb but the female returned, the blow she delivered hard enough to crack ribs. I involuntarily let go.
I barked at Nessie, demanding she retreat, and she obeyed, kicking off the wreck of cars and flying gracefully into the air until she landed steadily on a nearby tree.
A second blow, then a third and the world blurred as I stumbled away, shaking my head to clear my vision.
"Enough!" Screeched the female, "End this so we can return home. She'll be pleased we found the girl so quickly."
She?
The man took a step, his back bending in preparation to strike, his mouth opening to speak-
A metallic tear echoed along the road and the man's head bounced into the thicket by the side of the road.
"What!-" The woman tried to speak before a blur of black and brown dashed across the road, and took a handful of the Volturi guard's hair, yanking her head back and leaving enough room to sink her teeth into her throat. A millisecond of struggle before her head snapped away too and her body slumped to the ground.
Renesmee landed by my side and I leaned into her, feeling the warmth and desperation of her touch but her eyes were not on me and instead, narrowed on the hooded figure – hooded woman – who'd saved my life.
Tall and slender; thick, golden waves flowed through the sides of her hood. The same brilliant gold of her eyes.
Renesmee gasped her name at the same time I thought it.
"Auntie Rose?"
