A/N: Okay, this is the start of the story of Sonny's injury and recovery. Let me know what you think!
"Okay guys, let's get ready to roll out." Clay announces after confirming with Davis that the HVT's location was confirmed by a source on the ground.
Sonny had been watching Lisa while he got jocked up. He didn't like what he was seeing, she looked nervous. And if he had learned anything over the last few years of her being the team's intel officer, if Davis didn't like it then something was going to go wrong. He already knew she didn't have a great feeling about the op, but it wasn't her call to make. He made his way of to the HAVOC set up at the front of the plane. "Hey." He said softly.
"Hey." She returns without looking up from the computer. She knew if she looked him in the eyes that he would drag her growing concerns out of her.
He takes a couple steps closer to her. "Wanna tell me what's goin through that head of yours?"
"Nothing. Just reviewing the intel." She still doesn't look at him.
He puts his hand on her shoulder. "Lisa, look at me." He waits for her to look at him. "Ya know I can tell somethin is wrong. I'll feel better if ya just tell me what it is. I know ya said ya didn't have a good feelin about this op a couple of days ago, is that what's up?"
Lisa leans back in her chair and looks up at him. Sometimes working with her partner was the best thing she could ask for, then there are other times like these where his ability to read her backfired. "There is just a lot of unknows and coupled with some questionable intel." She lets out a long breath. "Just be careful, okay."
Sonny looks around the plane to make sure no one is watching them before leaning down and kissing the top of her head. "Always baby."
"I know." Lisa gives a weak smile. She knows she should tell him he shouldn't kiss her like that, but she enjoyed the comfort it brought her too much.
"Damn, ya really are worried. Ya didn't even comment about the little PDA on work time." Sonny said with a raised eyebrow.
Lisa looks into his eyes. Damn it, she didn't like this feeling. "Can I have a hug." She asks, sounding more worried than she meant to.
Sonny squats down and encircles her in his arms. "I'm too damn hardheaded to die." He feels her nod and chuckle.
She turns her head and gives him a quick kiss. "I love you."
Sonny stands. "I love ya too. I'll see ya in a little while."
Lisa watches him walk away feeling a knot appear in her stomach. She tried to keep her mind from going there, but she couldn't help but think, 'What if that was the last time I get to talk to him?' After the team left the plane, she stood nervously in the HAVOC. She watched the team's route on ISR. She watched them pull near the target. Why was she so nervous, she thought?
The team made entry into the target and was still looking for the HVT. Clay was lying of the roof of an adjacent one story building providing sniper overwatch. Sonny was standing on the far corner of the building providing security for Clay. Clay's focus was on his scope when he heard Sonny yell out in pain. He looked up just in time to watch Sonny fall from the roof. "Shit" Clay mumbles as he leans over the ledge to check on Sonny. "Sonny. You good man?"
"No." Sonny grunts. "I took a round."
"Can you move?" Clay asks.
Sonny tries to roll over, but feels a sharp pain shoot through his back and down his legs. "Fuck. No."
"Bravo One to HAVOC. Bravo Two is down and I need Medavac for him."
Lisa heart drops to the bottom of her stomach and she feels like she is going to throw up. "HAVOC to Bravo One, medavac is spinning up. Eight minute ETE." She felt like the world was spinning. She knew this op was a bad idea. Why did it have to be Sonny?
Trent made his way over to where Sonny was lying. "Dude, what happened?" He asks as he kneels next to Sonny.
"I took a goddamned gut shot and fell off a roof." Sonny grunts. "What the fuck does it look like, Trent."
"What hurts?" Trent asks as he works. Sonny points to the wound on his left flank. "Do you feel an exit?" Sonny shakes his head no. "And that entrance wound is the only place you feel pain?" Trent asks as he exposes Sonny's torso and begins to palpate.
"Well." Sonny takes a breath, finding breathing had become increasingly difficult. "When I tried to roll." He takes another breath. "I felt a sharp pain in my back and now my legs are tinglin."
"Shit Sonny. You know that's bad." Trent responds.
"Thanks for statin the obvious there Trent."
"Sitrep." Clay asks over comms from his overwatch position. That was his 2IC and best friend he just watched get shot.
Back in HAVOC, Lisa held her breath waiting for an answer. Finally, she hears a radio key. "I'm alive." Sonny takes as deep of a breath as he can. "A medavac would be great."
'He's alive.' Kept playing through her head. "Medavac is three minutes out Bravo Two." Lisa does everything she can to hide the crack in her voice. He is still alive and well enough to be talking, she told herself.
As worried as Sonny was that something was really wrong with him, hearing Davis on the other end of the radio helped. Sonny looks at Trent and sees the worry in his eyes. "Ima haunt ya if ya let me die."
Trent shakes his head. "I'm sure Davis will kill me long before you get the chance to haunt me."
"Shit, don't make me laugh." Sonny groans, the pain getting worse by the moment. "Just get me to the hospital."
"We got you buddy." Trent says as the helo touches down.
Sonny breaths a little sigh of relief once he hears the helicopter land. Clay comes into Sonny view and he calls out for him. "Clay." He says before he is loaded.
Clay leans down to him. "What's up brother?"
"If I don't make it." Sonny starts, but is stopped by Clay. "Don't say that."
"Damnit Clay, just listen." Sonny huffs. "Tell Lisa she means the world to me." He pauses to take a breath. "Servin with ya has been some of my best years as an operator. Just make sure Lisa is okay, ya know she won't ask for help."
Clay takes Sonny's hand. "You're not going to die brother, but if you do, I got it covered."
"Thanks man." Sonny mumbles.
Once Sonny is loaded into the helo and it has taken off, Clay and the rest of the team make their way back to their ground transport to head back to the airfield where the C17 was waiting. Clay walked straight to Lisa and wrapped her in his arms. "I'm not going to lie, he's sick, but he's alive."
"What the hell happened?" Lisa asks, doing her best to keep her composure.
"I was on sniper overwatch and he was my security, and he took a round to the left side of his stomach. And then he fell off the roof of the building we were on." Clay tells her.
"I can't lose him Clay. This is a moment I have been dreading for years. I just can't." Lisa says in a broken voice with tears threating to spill over.
"I know Davis." Clay tries to comfort her. He has no idea what she is feeling or how she is still standing. All he can think is how big of a mess he would be if that was Emma. "What would he tell you?"
Lisa chuckles a little thinking about Sonny's go to argument when she was worried about his safety. "That he is too stubborn to die."
Clay nods as they pull apart. "And you know that's the truth."
The only thing Lisa's mind can do in the minute is to switch back into work mode. "You and the guys get loaded and dejocked. I just want to get home."
"You sure you're good Davis?" Clay asks, the concern written all over his face.
"Yeah Clay. As good as I'm going to be right now." Lisa sighs. "Let's just get wheels up back towards the states." After the plane is in the air, Lisa finds her way over to Sonny's belongings and pulls out the Texas hoodie he had been wearing before the team jocked up. She plopped on the bench seat nearest her, holding tightly to the sweatshirt. She buried her face in it, thinking maybe the smell of him would help ease the pain she was feeling, but it only made her miss and worry about him more.
