A/N: This chapter is set a month after the last. Let me know what you think!
Sonny was sound asleep when movement in their bedroom woke him up. "Lisa what are ya doin?"
"Packing." Lisa calls from the closet.
"I knew ya had been home for too long." Sonny chuckles. "I mean I got a whole week and a half with ya."
"I know Sonny." Lisa says moving to sit on the side of the bed. "I'm going to be gone for at least a few days if not a week."
"I don't know if I will ever get used to bein the one that's left behind." Sonny says resting his hand on her thigh.
"I have full faith you can find a way to keep yourself busy while I'm gone." Lisa chuckles seeing him pout. "Don't make me feel even worse about leaving you."
"Simple fix, don't leave." Sonny smiles.
"You're so full of shit." Lisa laughs at him.
"It was worth a shot." Sonny chuckles. "When ya gotta leave?"
"In a few minutes." Lisa huffs. "And I need to finish packing."
"Then get outta this bed Ma'am. Ya can't be late on my account." Sonny tells her.
"Okay, okay I'm going." Lisa says leaning forward to kiss him before she gets up.
"Seein as it's still dark and I don't have anything to do until later, Ima go back to sleep." Sonny says watching her stand.
Lisa turns around to look at him. "In that case, I love you." She leans down and kisses him again. "Try not to get to bored while I'm gone."
"I'll try. Love ya, be safe." Sonny smiles.
Three Days later
"Hi. How can I help you today." The young woman behind the counter at the animal shelter greeted Sonny as he walked in.
"Hi, um I'm lookin for a dog." Sonny tells her.
"Okay, awesome. I'm Molly." She smiles.
"Sonny." He returns.
"Do you know what you're looking for? Age, breed or size, good family dog?" Molly asks.
"Uh, I ain't really thought about it. I um, I've never been able to have a pet before cause of work, but I'm stuck at home recovering from an injury, that very probably will get me medically discharged." Sonny pauses. "But, uh anyways, nothin small."
"Oh wow." She says walking from around the counter. "Do you want to walk through the kennel?"
"Yeah." Sonny agrees. "I don't move super-fast these days."
"No worries." Molly tells him. "It will just give you more of a chance to see the dogs."
"Let's head that way then." Sonny says looking around the shelter lobby.
"It can get a little loud in here." Molly opens the door to the dog kennel. "Let me know if you see any dog you'd like to see."
Sonny and Molly slowly walk through the kennel. When they are almost to the end when Sonny stops in front of a kennel containing two rottweilers curled up against each other. "Who are these guys?"
"We think these two are brother and sister. They seem to be about four months old. Someone dropped them off about three weeks ago. No explanation." Molly shakes her head. "But they are super sweet, love to cuddle and run around outside. They have a clean bill of health. We are calling them Ross and Monica, but they don't seem to like those names."
"That's horrible that someone did that to them." Sonny says as the two dogs come to the door and sniff Sonny. "Hi guys." Sonny says bending down. "Can I see them?"
"Absolutely." Molly smiles. "We always worry when we get dogs that are stereotypically labeled aggressive breeds, it can be the sweetest dog, but the stereotype follows them."
"I'll tell ya what, I was labeled an aggressive breed for a long time." Sonny chuckles. "It wouldn't be fair of me to judge them without gettin to know them."
"I wish everyone was as opened minded as you." Molly says as she opens the kennel door.
Sonny kneels down in the kennel and Ross is the first approach Sonny. Sonny pats him on the head. "Hey buddy." He sits next to Sonny.
"He likes you." Molly smiles.
After a few minutes Monica slowly makes her way towards Sonny. "Hi." Sonny says softly extending his hand for her to smell. She sniffs Sonny and comes a little closer and lets Sonny pet her. "I won't hurt ya."
"In case you couldn't tell, she's the standoffish one." Molly tells him. "But she's warming up to you."
"So how do I adopt these two?" Sonny asks.
"Awesome." Molly says. "Let's go do the paperwork and the three of you can head on your way."
"Great." Sonny says standing up.
After Sonny and Molly had finished everything she hands Sonny the leashes. "Bye you two." She pats them on the heads. "Have a good life in your forever home." She says to the dogs. She looks at Sonny. "Take good care of them."
Sonny nods. "Yes Ma'am. We will." Sonny walks out to his truck and opens the back door of his truck. "Hop on up guys." Once Sonny has them in the truck, he drives home.
"Alright. Home sweet home." Sonny says after he gets them out of the truck. He gets them into the house and takes their leashes off. "Y'all go explore." He chuckles.
Sonny didn't even know he had fallen asleep while watching TV until his phone ringing woke him up. "Hey baby." Sonny smiles when Lisa's face comes into view. "How's the op goin?"
"It went well. We are actually getting ready to head home." Lisa smiles.
"That's good to hear." Sonny tells her.
"You look like you're hiding something." Lisa says raising an eyebrow at Sonny.
"I ain't hidin anything. I do have a surprise for you when ya get home." Sonny smirks.
"The last time you surprised me like this you were getting discharged." Lisa states.
"That is a fantastic point." Sonny chuckles. "Well, I ain't gonna tell ya this time."
"Nothing can be as big as you walking again or getting discharged." Lisa shakes her head.
"Oookay little miss know it all." Sonny teases.
"Listen Sonny, I have to go. But I'll be home in no time." Lisa smiles.
"Have a good flight." Sonny smiles. After he hangs up his phone he looks down and sees a dog sleeping on either side of him. "Y'all are gonna meet your Mama tomorrow. You're gonna like, I promise."
The next day
Lisa pulls into the garage and walks into the house and is greeted by barking. "Sonny."
"It's okay guys." Sonny says to the dogs. He looks at Lisa. "Suprise."
Lisa looks between the two dogs. "This is your surprise? You got dogs, young dogs without telling me?"
"In case ya haven't noticed I get pretty lonely when you're gone. I thought this would be good for me." Sonny tells her.
Lisa thinks for a second. "I can see that."
"Are ya mad at me?" Sonny asks.
"No." Lisa smiles. "I'm just shocked."
"Good, cause they have already been abandoned once. And their only four months old." Sonny tells her.
"Omg, that's terrible." Lisa says looking at them setting next to each other. "Brother and sister?"
"Yeah, that's what the shelter said. She said someone just dropped them off three weeks ago with no explanation." Sonny explains.
"Aww poor things." Lisa says. "What are their names?"
"Well, they were callin them Monica and Ross. But they don't really seem to like those." Sonny says.
"So, what you're saying is we are going to rename them?" Lisa giggles.
"That was my plan." Sonny nods.
"Okay. Which one is which?" Lisa chuckles.
"Ah. Ross is the orange collar and Monica is the green." Sonny tells her. "I figured we can go shopping and get everything we need."
"A doggie shopping spree?" Lisa asks as she sits on the ground. "Hi sweethearts." She reaches out and rubs the two on their heads. "It's nice to meet you guys."
"They are really sweet." Sonny smiles. "When ya called yesterday I had fallen asleep on the couch and when I woke up, they were both sleepin on either side of me."
"Awe they are already making themselves right at home." Lisa says with a huge smile. "I've never had a dog before."
"I know baby."
"Okay Sonny. Let me go change and we can head to the pet store." Lisa tells him as he stands up.
