A/N: This chapter is set in the same time as chapter 35. Hope you enjoy!
Sonny pulls into the driveway of his father's ranch then stops the car. "Lisa, I don't know if I can do this."
"You can." Lisa takes his hand. "I'll be right here with you the whole time."
"It's been nearly two decades since I've been here." Sonny shakes his head. "I don't even know what to say to the man."
"Sonny, sitting here isn't going to make it any easier."
"Fine." Sonny grumbles and puts the car back in drive. He takes everything in. "This place is in shambles."
"That bad?" Lisa asks.
"Yeah." Sonny nods. "There used to be cattle and horses all over. Now, there ain't any animals and everything is fallin apart."
"Come on Sonny." Lisa opens her door and gets out. "Don't make me pull you out of this car Sonny Quinn."
"I'm gonna get out cause I whole heartly believe ya actually would drag me outta this damn car." Sonny chuckles as he gets out of the car.
Lisa walks around and takes Sonny hand and pulls him towards the house. "Come along honey."
"Ya know I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for ya." Sonny tells her as they walk up the stairs.
Lisa cocks an eyebrow at him. "No Sonny, I had no idea."
"Smartass." He says under his breath as he raises his hand to knock on the front door.
"But you're so thankful to have me in your life." Lisa smirks.
"Yes I am." Sonny leans over and gives her a quick kiss. "I would be lost without ya babe." The front door rips open and Sonny not prepared for what was on the other side, his frail father. "Dad."
"What the hell are you doin here." Emmit chokes out.
"I ain't been here in years, I took time off of work and that's how ya greet me." Sonny states.
"You just said it, you haven't been home in nearly two decades." Emmit returns.
Sonny takes a deep breath. "Listen, Hannah called me and told me you're sick and not doin so well."
"And." Emmit says with a cough.
"I knew this was a mistake." Sonny grumbles turning to walk away.
Lisa pulls against Sonny. "Don't do this."
"Lisa." He snaps before he realizes who he's snapping at. "I'm sorry." He says softly to her.
"Ya finally found someone that can keep that mouth in line." Emmit scuffs.
"Sonny, think very carefully about what you say next." Lisa warns.
"Why Lisa?" Sonny huffs. "It doesn't matter. I told ya he was still a miserable piece of shit." He turns and walks off.
Lisa turns and looks at Emmit. "Can I ask you something?" Lisa doesn't pause to let him answer. "You very well may die; do you really want to leave this earth with this hanging over you and Sonny? Do don't know who he grew up to be. What he has made of his life."
"He doesn't want to be here." Emmit responds.
"He came because deep down he knows you need help and that you two need to heal whatever is broken between you." Lisa tells him.
"It's better to not dig up old dirt." Emmit says before closing the door.
Lisa finds Sonny standing under a big oak tree. She rubs her hand down his back. "This was my Mamma's favorite on this ranch."
Lisa wrapped her arm around Sonny's and laid her head on his shoulder. "What was she like?"
"She was the best." Sonny smiles at the memories. "She loved me, I remembered always feelin so loved when she was still alive. We laughed all the time."
"I'm glad you have those memories." Lisa tells him.
"I just wish I had a few more year with her." Sonny lets out a long sigh. "Maybe things would have turned out better."
"I think things have turned out pretty well for you." Lisa points out.
"It's been a rough ride to get there." Sonny responds. "I love ya and I love our life, but look how many years I spent bein a dumbass."
"Yeah, some of that was pretty rough." Lisa chuckles.
"But ya stuck with with through all of it." Sonny looks down at her. "I could have turned out like him. Alone and angry at the world. Ya helped save me from that."
"We saved each other Sonny."
Sonny smiles. "So, uh, what did ya say to dear ol' Dad?"
"Well." Lisa pauses. "I in not so many words told him he was being a dick."
"I told ya he hadn't changed." Sonny says softly.
"I'm sorry." Lisa kisses him on the cheek. "Do you want to leave?"
Sonny takes a look around before he answers. "I don't feel right bout just packin up and headin back to bob beach, he looks bad."
Lisa nods. "He does. Hannah wasn't wrong."
"What if he dies Lisa?" Sonny huffs. "I haven't given two shits bout him for so long and now all of a sudden, I don't want him to die. And certainly not with things like this between us. How crazy is that?"
"That's not crazy, Sonny." Lisa steps in front of him and rubs his upper arms. "As messed up as your relationship is, he's your dad. You're hardwired to love him, no matter how shitty your childhood was."
"He clearly didn't wanna talk to me." Sonny counters.
"Tell you what Sonny, how about we go grab a few drinks and some food. Go check into our hotel and get a good night of sleep."
Sonny smiles down at her. "That sounds like a good plan my love."
"Good." Lisa hugs him. "I better get some cool stories about this place."
Sonny holds her tightly against him. "I love ya so much. Thank ya for comin here with me."
"You can stop thanking me, Sonny." Lisa mumbles against his chest. "I'm always here to support you."
Sonny kisses the top of her head and drops his arms from around her. "Should we get that drink now?"
"We should." Lisa agrees as they turn to walk to their car. "Where to?"
"I don't know what the food situation is, but there's this bar not far from here." Sonny opens Lisa's door for her.
"Thank you." She gets in the car. "Get in cowboy I need a drink after this."
"Yes Ma'am."
