A/N: This chapter is set the day after the last chapter.
"Ya okay Dad?" Sonny asks as the three get seated in the exam room.
"Stop fussin over me." Emmet grunts.
"Dad ya can barely breath." Sonny retorts.
"Stop." Emmet breaths out.
"Sonny, honey." Lisa rubs his arm. "Relax. If he says he's okay, then he's okay."
Sonny leans against the counter in the room. "Fine."
"Thanks for the concern, son." Emmet tells him once he catches his breath. "I have lung cancer, it's what it is."
"I know Dad." Sonny responds. "I just hate seen ya like this."
"Good afternoon." Dr. Bennett says as she enters the room.
"Hey Doc." Sonny greets.
"Hi Sonny." She turns and looks at Emmet. "How are you feeling today?"
"Like I got kicked in the chest by a horse." Emmet tells her.
"Mhm." She nods, expecting this answer. "If everyone is ready, I'll go ahead and pull up your scans and tests." Dr. Bennett sees the three nod their heads in agreement. She looks at the large TV in the room when the CT was displayed. "As you can see, the cancer has only grown despite the treatment. And it is now appearing to have metastasized to the rest of your torso."
When neither Sonny or Emmet speak, Lisa does. "What does that mean?"
Dr. Bennett takes a deep breath before delivering the news. "You are stage four."
"That's the one when people die, right?" Sonny asks.
Dr. Bennett nods her head yes. "We need to have a serious conversation about treatment vs palliative care."
"I don't wanna live my last days sick from the chemo." Emmet says.
"Dad, are ya sure?" Sonny looks at the doctor. "How much more time would he have if he continued treatment?"
"Honestly, two maybe three months, but like Emmet has already pointed out he would spend the majority of that suffering the side effects of the chemo." Dr. Bennett tells Sonny.
"Dad, ya sure?" Sonny double checks.
"Yeah, son I am. I wanna enjoy what little time I have let on this earth." Emmet tells him.
"If that's what ya want." Sonny tells him, hating the thought of losing his Dad so soon after reconnecting with him. "What are our next steps then?" Sonny asks the doctor.
"My office will put you guys in touch with a hospice team. The hospice nurse will come and do a home visit with you all and get you all set up with their team." Dr. Bennett tells them. "Do you have any other questions?"
Lisa looks at Sonny and Emmet and answers for them. "Not right now. I'm sure there will be some for the hospice nurse, but for now, I think we are as good as we are going to get."
"I'm getting hungry." Emmet announces, attempting to get up from the sofa.
"I'll make dinner." Sonny jumps to his feet before Emmet can protest. "Y'all relax, I got it."
"How nice of you." Lisa smiles.
"I'm a nice guy." Sonny bends down and kisses her before he walks towards the kitchen to start dinner.
"You'll watch after him, right?" Emmet asks out of nowhere.
Lisa looks up from her laptop. "I will and for what it's worth, I have been watching after him for years. Sonny and I have been taking care of each other since we met."
"He never told me how y'all met." Emmet states.
Lisa closes her laptop and sits it on the coffee table before answering. "Work is the short answer."
"What's the long answer?" Emmet asked with a raised eyebrow.
"You know, Sonny makes that exact same face." Lisa chuckles. "There's not a whole lot to tell. We worked with conjoined teams, so we saw each other a lot. We, um, just clicked. We were fast friends."
"He showed me some pictures from y'all's weddin last night." Emmet pauses to catch his breath. "Y'all looked happy."
"We were happy. We had a long and rough road to get there." Lisa smiles remembering their wedding day. "Plus, he surprised me."
"Now, how did he do that?" Emmet asks.
"Wait, did he not tell you that part?" Lisa laughs. "He planned the whole thing without me knowing."
"He really did that?" Lisa sees the surprised expression on Emmet's face. "My boy did that?"
"Yeah Emmet, he did. Sonny has always been a different person with me. Even back in the early days, he shared thing, facets of himself that he never shared with anyone else."
"He said something bout that last night." Emmet nods. "It's amazin it took y'all so long to have feelin for each other."
"And the craziest part is neither of us know how or we started having them." Lisa takes a sip of her beer. "Just out of the blue one day he went from being my goofy best friend to this guy I was attracted to."
"And now you're here." Emmet chuckles. They sit in silence for a couple of minutes before he speaks again. "All he will tell me is that he got hurt and that he can't be a SEAL anymore, but he won't tell me what happened."
"Ah. He hates even thinking about it, let alone talking about it." Lisa pauses. "They were on an op and he was on the roof of a building adjacent to the target building when he got shot in the stomach. Which caused him to fall off the building."
"What?" Emmet asks upon hearing this new information for the first time.
Lisa nods. "The bullet lodged against his spine which caused him to be paralyzed for a couple months. He worked tirelessly in PT to get back to what you see. And as good as he is, he will never heal enough to operate again."
"If he hadn't told me, I would have never known." Emmet tells her.
"And that's the way Sonny likes it. He has built a life after operating." Lisa looks into the kitchen and sees Sonny cooking away. "I know he misses it, but he's happy, we're happy."
"What are ya two chuckle heads talkin bout?" Sonny asking after reentering the living room.
"How damn long ya are takin to cook this food." Emmet grunts.
"It's worth the wait." Sonny informs him. "Ya wanna eat on the porch?"
Emmet nods his head yes. "I'll help you get everything set up." Lisa says standing and walking with Sonny to the kitchen.
"Are you glad you're here, spending time with him?" Lisa asks Sonny.
"I am." Sonny stops what he is doing and wraps his arms around Lisa's waist. "Is he happy I'm here?"
"I think so. He was asking me about how we met and about your injury." Lisa looks Sonny in the eyes. "I think he knows he missed a lot and now he wants to know as much as he can."
"Have I ever told ya how great ya are?" Sonny smiles down at her.
"You're pretty swell too." Lisa giggle before she leans up and kisses him.
