A/N: This chapter is set six weeks after the last.

"Sonny." Lisa mumbles into her phone still mostly asleep. "It's the middle of the night baby, is everything okay?"

"No." Sonny responds. "I, uh, I-I don't know how much longer he has." Sonny let's out a long breath. "He's doin real bad. The hospice nurse came and checked him out this evenin and basically, she told me to keep him comfortable."

"Shit." Lisa sits up in bed. "I'll book the first flight I can get in the morning."

"Lisa, I, um, thank ya." Sonny tells her.

"Of course, Sonny." Lisa runs her fingers through her hair. "Do you need me to bring anything?"

"Nah, I think I'm good." Sonny answers. "I'll, uh, I'll see ya soon. I love ya."

"I love you too Sonny." She flops back in the bed and pulls up her airline app, she finds her mind wondering. This had been a long two months for them. They had decided that Sonny would stay in Texas with his dad and Lisa would go back and forth between Texas and Virginia Beach. She re focused on the task at hand and she found a flight.

"Hey Hannah, thanks for picking me up." Lisa says as she gets into Hannah's truck at the airport. "How are they?"

"Not good. Emmet is reaching the end and Sonny is trying to keep it together, but I can tell he is really torn up." Hannah tells her.

"I hate this for sonny and Emmet." Lisa shakes her head. "I wish they had reconnected earlier."

"Yeah." Hannah nods. "Emmet seems more at peace than I have ever seen him. I think he has accepted what is impending and the fact that he has been able to reconnect with Sonny."

Lisa looks out the window as Hannah drives. "That's good, I've been worried about them. Thank you for helping Sonny."

"It's no problem, Lisa." Hannah smiles. "Sonny and I were best friends growing up, we have always supported each other."

"None the less, it makes me feel better to know he has you to lean on while I'm back in Virginia Beach." Lisa responds.

"Hi baby." Lisa wraps her arms around his neck from behind.

"Hey." He turns his head and kisses her. "How was your flight?"

"It was fine." Lisa rubs his shoulder. "How's Emmet?"

"Not good." Sonny shakes his head. "His breathin is gettin weaker and weaker."

"Can I do anything?" Lisa asks.

"Just uh, just sit with me, with us." Sonny takes her hand as she sits down next to him. "How do I say goodbye to a dad I just said hello to again not too long ago?"

"You're doing it Sonny. I would guess that you two have shared more in the last two months than most parents and kids share in a lifetime." Lisa rests her head on Sonny's shoulder.

Sonny kisses the top of her head. "Two weeks ago, the last time he was strong enough to get out of bed, we went out on the property and I made a fire and we cooked steaks over the open fire, drank some whisky and talked bunch. He apologized for the way my childhood went after Mama died." Sonny tries his best to hide the choke in his voice. "He told me he was proud of me. Lisa, that is somethin I never thought I would hear him say that."

"I'm glad you have had this time with him." Lisa wraps her arm around Sonny's. "I think you both needed it."

"Mmhm." Sonny nods. "I see him in a whole new light now."

"That's good." Lisa strokes his forearm.

After a few hours Sonny sees Emmet's breaths becoming more shallow with longer gaps in between. He scoots forward and takes Emmet's limp hand in his. "Dad." He lets out a long breath and looks up at the twilight sunset pour into Emmet's bedroom. "This was always Mama's favorite time of day. This is the prettiest sunset I have seen since I have been home, if that ain't a sign that it's time to go be with Mama, then I don't know what is." Sonny watches Emmet for a couple more minutes. "I love ya, Dad." Sonny feels a stray tear roll down his cheek as his watches Emmet take his last breath. "Thank ya for everything Dad. These last two months have meant more to me than you'll ever know." Sonny turns when he hears the hospice nurse walk into the room. "Is he really gone?"

Once the nurse checks for a pluse and listens for lung and heart sounds, she nods her head yes. "He is. Take as long as you want with him. Then I will get him ready for the funeral home to come pick up."

When Sonny doesn't answer, Lisa answers for him. "Thank you. We will let you know." She leans in towards Sonny. "He's not in pain anymore."

"I know." Sonny nods. "And I know this is what he wanted. To pass in his own bed with me by his side." Sonny's eyes meet Hannah's who had been sitting on the other side of the bed. "Thank ya for bein here too. I know ya were the only one lookin after him for a long time, and that means a lot to me. And, uh I know it meant a lot to him too."

Hannah offers a weak smile. "Like you said, I'm glad he spent his last minutes surrounded by the ones he loved. And I think you are right about the sunset."

"Member how she used to just sit on the front porch and watch the sunset every night?" Sonny asks Hannah.

"I do." She nods. "She would tell me that it felt like the whole world was magic."

"I forgot she would say that." Sonny smiles at the memory.

"Now they get to watch the sunsets together again." Hannah tells him.

"Ya really think she wants to see him again?" Sonny chuckles.

"He was always good to her." Hannah smiles. "She softened him."

Hannah and Lisa share a look. "Hannah and I are going to give you a minute alone with him." Lisa kisses him on the temple. "I love you."
