"Is that the engagement ring?" Matt asked Light who had his breakfast beside L. The Japanese teenager knew the boys' eyes on his ring finger.

He sat across Mello. L on Light's right side sat across Near and Matt was on Mello's right side. Light threw a glance at L. The older man seemed didn't care about the conversation about the ring. He enjoyed his cake without giving any indication that he listened to the topic. Yet, he must know since they were at the same table.

Mello commented, "I still had a hard time picturing L going down on one knee and proposing to someone. Anyone." He added while he looked at Light, "No offense."

"None was taken," Light shrugged. "I'm with you in this, Mello. You are right."

Mello raised an eyebrow, "About what?"

"He," Light glanced at L, "didn't get down on one knee. He didn't ask me to marry him explicitly but implicitly."

L said, "I did ask you to come to England with me, Light."

"That's how you propose to him?" Mello was slightly surprised.

Near said, "By asking him to come here, L and Light will have right like any couple in a legal matter. Because Japan hasn't approved same-sex marriage, unlike England."

Light told Near, "That's what he told me."

"Typical L," Matt snickered. "How did you two, you know, hit it off and hook up? Please, please, enlighten me." Matt asked curiously with curious eyes on Light, "Did L lure you to an early dinner or something?"

There was a brief moment when L and Light's gaze found each other. They knew they need to answer it carefully or the boys will know Light's previous status. A suspect of Kira. Other than L, Light didn't have an intention for anyone to know. He bet it will be troublesome for L should anyone (other than Watari) know about it. Light smiled with a light smile, "No, not a dinner. But, a tennis match. Ryuuzaki said he want to get to know me by playing tennis."

"Tennis match?" Matt blinked. "Who won?"

"Ask him," Light smiled with a tint of fondness. "You will not believe me anyway even if I say it."

Mello stared at his mentor, "L?"

"I lost," L said in his monotone voice. "Light won."

The boys gasped lightly and started at Light who finished his breakfast. As L's potential successor, the boys knew L's abilities. Including the fact that L was unmatched in tennis. At least in England. Mello narrowed his eyes at Light. He admired L the most compared to the other two younger successors. He couldn't accept L lost to someone unknown like Light. L never lost to anyone. Either his mentor was lost because he was attracted to Light which meant he was distracted in the match or L went easy on Light because he liked him or... Light was really capable to win. If the latter was the case, this Japanese teenager... Who is he?

"Wow...unbelievable," commented Matt.

"I can't argue with that," Light smiled at L with concealed fondness. That match was when both of them each other identity but L didn't have proof about Light was Kira and Light didn't have L's real name. It was an unforgettable moment.

Near stared at Light with different thoughts as he reached out to play with his hair. He was the youngest of the successors and he was the one with low social skills. He barely considered that L came to Light's campus and played him a tennis match for courting purposes. Matt may be passed it as one of L's eccentric behavior. But, Near didn't think so. It seemed suspicious to him that L took initiative to get closer to someone during his investigation on a case. Not just in any case. It's Kira's case.

L saw the calculation gaze on Mello and Near. He knew both of them suspicious about Light. In a bad way. Light didn't lie and he indeed say the tennis match was his way to get to know each other but L did it with Kira in mind. Light was playing with his words wonderfully, he implied like L was attracted to him at that time. Mostly, it was plausible to consider L was not an average man. He may have his own way of courting someone. Like, how he did indirectly propose to Light. Yet, seemed like his first and second candidate of successor was true to their ranks.

"Light, you need to signs some papers to legalized our marriage," L rose to his feet after he sipped his coffee one last time. "I had Watari put them on my study. I'll explain about it."

"Alright," Light followed his suit and waited when L told the boys, "Wait for me in the investigation room."

—000—

Light signed several documents on the sofa inside L's study room. The long coffee table in front of him was covered with papers. Light was stunned when he signed the marriage document. His heartbeat quickened as his eyes focused on a name. He saw L's real name there. "L Lawliet..."

L who checked the other documents with his thumbs and foreigners halted when Light muttered his name. He stared at the paper in Light's hand. "Yes, that is my name."

"Your real name?"

"Yes."

"Are you not worried that I know your name?"

L paused for a long time and just gazed into Light's eyes. As time goes by, Light became nervous L didn't give any response. He did feel a slight disappointment that L maybe didn't trust him. The older man said, "In a legal matter like marriage, people need to use real names." He gave Light an application paper for changing his name. "Besides, Light will use my family name from now on so it will make no sense you don't know my name."

A gasp escaped from the redhead, there was a new name for him, "Light Lawliet..."

"I suggest you choose an alias and I believe you know you should not reveal your new real name to anyone."

"An alias? Should I choose a Japanese one like yours?" Light signed the paper again. "Suseri told me your mother used to call you with 'Ryuuzaki'."

"Yes, my mother was raised in Japan by his father after her Russian mother passed away when she was a child. She was half Japanese half Russian but since she was raised in Japan, she used to Japanese customs. She wanted to call me with a Japanese name."

"You are a part Japanese and Russian," Light concluded. "But, you are British. And your real name is not Japanese nor Russian. I assume your father was British?"

"Indeed but his mother was French. So, I'm part British, French, Japanese, and Russian from my parents." L confirmed.

"You are quite generous with this information," Light noted.

L told him, "Light will be my husband so Light needs to know this much. I know all about your family."

The redhead frowned deeply, muttered to himself, "Oh, sorry, I'm not a stalker-like a certain someone."

L pretend to didn't hear it, "When do you want to have the wedding?"

The redhead stop signing, "I thought you want all of this to be a secret. I assume there will be no wedding ceremony and we just have a marriage certificate. "

"We can have a private wedding in here but indeed, the guest list will be far less than a normal wedding." L added, "Light will live in secrecy as my spouse so I guess I owe Light a proper wedding ceremony."

Light was stunned, it was rare for L to be considerate if their history was any indication. L was not one to do the social thing. He barely sees the sunlight. It seemed like a miracle for L to even suggest that they should have a wedding ceremony. "I see. I'll think about it. I'll let you know if I decide the date."

L nodded, "I'll choose the cake for our wedding."

"Of course," Light was astonished but chuckled. L would never forget about the cake.

The redhead read some of the documents and one of them was the application for a bank account. Light will have his account for his fair share of money as L's spouse and the detective gave him liberty to use as his wish. Light saw the deposit and was surprised with the nominal there, "Are you sure I can have this much?"

L who crouched beside Light on the sofa put his thumb on his lips, "Considering your previous "career", I doubt you will use it to fund the mafia or any illegal organization. So, yes, Light can have it. In case something happens in the future. It's from my family account. I have another account for my job and it will be inherited by one of my successors." He had taken precautions for all kinds of scenarios. That's why there was Mello, Matt, and Near as his successors. L believed Light did what he did for the greater good and it did decrease the percentage of criminality around the world. He couldn't ignore that fact. It was efficient despite the method of gaining it was questionable. He gave Light a large amount of money just in case he died somewhere. It will take time to get his inheritance from the bank, hence he shared half the money he had from the start.

L noticed Light stiffened after his words out."Is something wrong, Light?" He asked.

A glare was the first answer before Light closed their distances. Their noses almost touched and it looked like they are kissing if someone look from behind. But, the glaring Light had, it tells a different story. He knew there were cameras in this room when L used 'career' to describe Kira's activity so he needed to be close because he just used a low voice. He hissed lowly, "I didn't let you live just for anyone out there to kill you."

"I know," L whispered. "I'm not suicidal if that's what Light implied." He looked unaffected but L was surprised inwardly that Light seemed to dislike the idea of his death.

Light leaned away, sighed, "I'm not saying you are suicidal."

"Light knows the risk of my job. Your father is the police. Out of all people, Light knows the risk in this line of job," L elaborated. "I'm a human, I will die someday. Either by human or in the hand of God if Death." Both of them glanced up at Ryuk who stood behind the sofa.

"Speaking of my death," L locked gaze with Light again, "I put Near, Mello, and Matt in my will as our kid's godfathers."

"What?" Light widened his eyes. "Why?"

"In case we both die and something happens to your family which makes them unable to care for a child, I want the boys to take care of our child."

Light knew L's line of thought and he did agree to some extent that they need to prepare if both L and Light died. He glanced at Ryuk. Since there were two shinigami's knew their names, their lives were numbered. Maybe Rem won't bother them as long as Misa was safe. There was a chance Ryuk may be written their names but it was a small percentage. He knew they needed someone to be with their kid should they die and his family couldn't take the child. But—

"I don't know anything about them," Light pointed out. "How can I trust them to care for our child?" He crossed his arms across his chest.

L asked, "What does Light want to know?"

"Their past. How do they end up in an orphanage? What is their upbringing? Their personality." Both of them knew what Light wanted to know. He wanted to know the truth of Ryuk's words about the transparent figure behind people Light saw recently. Ryuk admitted that the figures behind L were his parents. Then, how about the others?

"Alright," L began, "Matt's family died in a car crash. He loves video games. Mello has a temper. His mother died and his father is in jail. Both of them were the only child and live with their family until they reach 8 years old for Mello and 7 for Matt."

Realization dawn in, Light muttered, "So, that's the figures I saw behind them. The couple behind Matt is his parents. The woman behind Mello is his mother." He blinked, "Wait, Mello's father is in jail?"

"That man is alcoholic and abusive so the Children's Service relief him from parental responsibilities. Then, we took Mello."

Light was slightly disturbed, "I see."

L was silent and bite his thumb longer than normal which made Light ask, "And Near?"

"Near is… a bit different from the other two. He has no father or mother."

"Were they die when Near was a baby?" Light asked. "No, I didn't see anyone behind Near. I assume at least his parents are alive."

"Near has no family."

Light widened his eye, he started at L who closed his eyes. He asked, "What do you mean?"

"Near was born of an illegal experiment."

"Experiment?"

"A group of scientists tried to alter DNA to create a human with high intelligence and complete loyalty at wish. It means they don't want their creation to have feelings because, based on them, feelings will create a distraction and the loyalty will falter. Using in vitro fertilization, they would hire surrogate mothers and raise children in that building. They faced many failures as there were side effects to this experiment. Of all the children who were born in this process, one of them has the highest IQ and the least emotional one. Near was the first one who was they deemed successful."

Light listened carefully.

"I solved the case a few years ago. The experiment on Near has drawbacks. We test it several times and the result is Near has emotions like normal people but he has difficulty expressing his feelings."

L was silent again and Light become suspicious. "You're hiding something."

The older man stared at his future spouse, "According to several tests to be my successors, the boys are the top three. Despite the age, Near is the first, Mello is the second one and Matt is the third."

He warned Light, "By themselves, Near or Mello couldn't match me. Near lack the action. Mello lacks calm. But, if they are together, there is a possibility they could surpass me. Or you."

"Are you saying they will know about 'me'?" Light frowned.

"It will come to no surprise to me if they've concluded mine," L admitted. "They are trained to take my job should I die. What do you expect?"

"How about Matt?"

"His gift with technology surpassed any agent I know."

Light leaned back to the sofa, stared at the wall across him, "The boys could be a handful." Three of them will be like facing another L. Troublesome. However, Light was curious about something, he voiced out his curiosity, "What will you do if they know?"

"I wouldn't worried about it," said L.

"Why? Because they are still a child so they couldn't do anything?"

"No," L replied. "Because I know them."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Light frowned deeply. Of course, L knew the boys. They were his potential successors.

L looked down at the coffee table, "Light's intelligence is rivals mine. Light can read my thought but there is something we don't have in common despite we are compatible intellectual-wise. Something I have in common with the boys."

Light knew what it was when L smile faintly in a sad way, "Before becoming a detective, I'm an orphan too."

—000—

In the evening, Roger came to do a pregnancy check-up with Light. One room on the ground floor has changed into an examination room. Light laid down on the examination table beside the ultrasound machine.

"Hello, Light, how are you?" Roger greeted him with a smile.

"I'm fine, thank you," Light smiled politely. L slouched on the edge of the examination table.

Roger nodded, Watari has finished setting up the machine when Roger walked over to Light. "Watari shows me the medical history of your baby's development. It seems like everything is good. Do you have any discomfort?"

"Just constantly tired," Light admitted. "It's like I've been doing exercise over time."

"I see," Roger put the gel on Light's abdomen after the redhead rolled up his shirt. "Tired is one of the symptoms of pregnancy. Take as much rest as you need." He pressed the transducer on top of the gel and focused on the monitor.

"Does Light need to have bed rest?" L asked.

"Well, he just moved in here and is pregnant so I think it's understandable he is tired," said Roger. "For now, I don't think it's necessary for Light to do bed rest. If he has any bleeding, then I would suggest for him to have bed rest."

Roger reported to them, "14 weeks. It's good." He showed them a little human inside a circle on the screen. "Your baby is doing great. Next month, I think we can see the sex of your baby."

The old man turned to Light and L after he wiped out the gel from the redhead's belly. "For the next three months, it's called the second semester. From all three semesters of pregnancy stage, this semester is the safest for any activity. Miscarriage is rare during this time and there is a small chance for the baby to have premature birth," explained Roger. "I suggest you two have sex regularly in this stage. It will be good to prevent preeclampsia."

Both Light and L were stiffened at the suggestion. They have tuned out Roger's explanation as they were too shocked. Roger dismissed it because he thought the couple was surprised about how dangerous preeclampsia was during pregnancy.

What Roger didn't know was that L and Light haven't had sex since the night this child conceived.
