Hello everyone. Thank you for sticking with me. I've had a lot to go through these past months. Some good, some bad. Anyway, I wanted to post this short chapter to tide you over until I finish the next longer one. This was originally going to be part of the next chapter before we resume Robins adventures at Garreg Mach but please enjoy this one while I busy myself writing chapter 7.
"Robin! Come on, hurry up!" Lissa yelled as she turned and ran on ahead.
"I'm coming! Lemme just put my shoe on!" Robin almost tumbled out the door as she tugged her boot up. Swearing under her breath, she eventually caught up with the princess.
"Is she ok? Should I fetch some water?" She panted.
Lissa shook her head while knocking on a door with her new staff, "that won't be necessary, I made sure she had plenty when I last saw her."
"I'm coming!" Cried a voice on the other side. A second later out came a flushed red haired woman with medical supplies, "I got everything I could get my hands on, including fresh sheets."
"Good thinking, Cordelia." Robin praised.
"Alright, let's go! That lummox Chrom will be waiting for us." Lissa ran off again, eager to get to their destination.
Robin's heart was beating a mile a minute, and that wasn't from the running. She had learnt some very incredible news and she was excited.
After the trio reached the part of the castle Chrom lived in, they saw him pacing up and down. He had bags under his eyes, and looked unsure of what to do, which was unusual for him. He stopped when he saw them.
"L-Lissa," he tried, only for her to push past him and towards his door.
"How is she? Stable? What about the midwife?"
"S-she's in pain, but the midwife is with her-" he couldn't say anymore as all three women entered the room, shutting the door on him.
Robin was greeted with Olivia howling in pain, with the midwife tending to her. Lissa and Cordelia set to work straight away, making her feel somewhat useless. However, when Olivia saw her, she beckoned her over.
"Robin, come stay by me. You always make me feel comfortable." She was clearly exhausted, but kept smiling.
Robin immediately knelt by her and held her outstretched hand. Olivia held on tightly, almost for dear life.
"Just keep breathing, Olivia." Robin said gently, petting her hand.
"T-the baby." Olivia started but heaved in pain.
"Yes?" Robin coaxed her.
"Will you be there for them, like you've always been there for us?" Olivia breathed out, after a while of deep breaths.
"Of course, Olivia! You and Chrom are like family to me."
In truth, there was a time when she didn't know what to think about this new baby. She even had mixed feelings about Chrom and Olivia's wedding. He had chosen Olivia before Robin could work up any courage to say anything about her feelings.
Of course, she wasn't the only one to feel this way with Chrom, even if she was better at hiding it. Sumia expressed to Robin she had felt something for the prince, but by then she was already planning to marry Frederick. Chrom seemed to have a fanbase because she remembered Cordelia was often pining for him too, that was until Stahl swept her off her feet. At this point, it seemed half the Shepherd's had found someone they were planning to marry, or already had. Everyone had found someone but her…
And now Chrom was going to be a father, she knew there was enormous pressure on him after Emmeryn died and he was made Exalt. The people expected an heir.
She had to set aside her sadness, Chrom was married, the Exalt and now a father. He was living his life, she felt she was somewhat trailing behind...how would she react to the baby?
After much more blood sweat and tears, even the occasional swear word no one thought Olivia knew, the new baby was in her arms. Chrom was allowed in the second it was over.
He rushed over and knelt by Olivia's side, his eyes wide on the baby at all times. He and Olivia could not stop smiling, eventually he was able to hold his new child. Once Lissa dictated the proper way to hold a small child and was sure they'd be safe in Chrom's hands.
Robin just sat cross legged on the floor, watching the happy couple. She was smiling, she helped this family grow and found she was thankful to be a part of it. Then Chrom looked over to her.
"Robin, why don't you come over here and hold my new daughter?" He unwrapped part of the blanket so Robin could get a good look. Already she had a full head of her, the same colour as her fathers. Adorable, Robin couldn't help thinking. She looked at Olivia, who nodded eagerly.
She sat on the edge of Olivia's bed, and let Chrom plonk the small bundle in her arms. Immediately, Robin felt like she was going to hurt something so small. The new princess no less, was in her arms. What if she dropped her? The baby then opened her small eyes and Robin gasped.
"Chrom!" She couldn't believe what she saw. Chrom looked at where she was pointing, at the baby's eye.
"She has the brand." He confirmed. Smiling to himself, he sat back and closed his eyes.
Robin meanwhile gasped when a tiny hand wrapped itself around her finger. She has such a strong grip for someone only minutes old. Robin smiled and felt a warmth inside her. What a precious thing, life was. After all she had been through, the heartache and the pain, this was something she found she could willingly protect and make the future for this little one a better place, and that was something worth fighting for.
"Have you thought of a name?" Cordelia came up behind Robin to get a better look at the bundle.
"W-we had thought of a name, should it be a girl." Olivia breathed out, looking over to Chrom.
He opened his eyes and sat upright, "we liked the name Lucina." His protective gaze was on his daughter who had now been chewing on Robin's gloved hand.
"I like that name," Robin spoke as she tried to unhook her hand out of the baby's mouth.
"If you like it Robin, then it's settled." Chrom smiled warmly and reached out for Lucina. He placed her into Olivia's arms.
"She's beautiful, Chrom," Lissa placed a hand on his shoulder and squeezed. He squeezed her hand back.
"Both of you look tired," Robin sat up, dusting herself off. "I'm sure there'll be plenty more sleepless nights, but you know where to find me if you need a hand." She walked over to Lucina who had begun crying in her mother's arms. Robin bent down in order to help hush her. Lucina stopped slightly when she saw it was Robin.
"She's clearly fond of you, Robin." Olivia smiled. "I think we'll have to take you up on your offer."
The next few months were busy for Robin. Now Ylisse was largely at peace, she helped Chrom with various Exalt duties as he was still uneasy in his role. She spent a lot of her time with members of the Shepherds. She was even becoming more comfortable in Maribelle's presence and her constant nitpicking of Robin's fashion choices. She was there for Sumia's and Frederick's wedding, having relented to Maribelle and gone clothes shopping with her for the occasion. The Shepherd's in general were growing closer, and she felt like she was part of a family. A huge, awkward and weird one, but she couldn't ever remember having a family of her own. This extended version made her feel at home, everyone came to her for advice or to just hang out and the bonds between her and them strengthened.
She found herself babysitting Lucina at times too. This was new territory for Robin so she did what she enjoyed when she had time to herself and read to baby Lucina her favourite books. She knew Lucina wouldn't have understood 'Advanced Lance Techniques for Pegasus Riders', but she still listened to Robin's voice and it seemed to soothe her. Robin even dressed her up in a blue dress once for an occasion and the colour seemed to stick, Lucina would rarely be seen in any other colour as she would cry unless it was her favourite colour of blue. In the end, Robin became like a second mother to Lucina.
So what went wrong?
