Chapter 2
Five years ago, at Steve's house: *phone rang*
"I'll get the phone, Steve," she yelled.
"Hello?"
"May I please talk to Steven McGarrett?"
"Yes, hold on a second please."
"Steve, it is for you!"
Steve walked into the room and she took the crying baby out of his hands. Steve looked at the phone and saw that the number was from California. The admiral heard a baby crying and his mind went blank.
"Hello?"
No one answered. He could hear the person breathing.
"Hello? Anyone there?"
The phone hung up. He wanted to know who that was.
The next morning…
Steve got up early and went to the smart table to start tracing back the phone call. He didn't recognize the number and instantly rethought about Catherine. He found out that the phone call was made on a Navy base in California. He tried calling the number again, but it didn't go through. He then started texting the number asking who it was.
The Rollins household….
The Admiral did not know Catherine was already on her way to the airport. He got up early to report to duty, he looked at his phone and saw a missed call and text from Steve. He knew it would hurt Catherine more if he told Steve about the baby so he ignored the text.
Hours later…
Catherine's POV:
Catherine arrived in Hawaii and went to her hotel first to drop off her suitcase. She then took a taxi to headquarters with the box for Steve. After she paid the taxi driver, she got out of the car.
Before walking toward headquarters, she saw Steve talking to a woman, wearing a military uniform. They looked close. Steve stopped and turned around because he sensed something familiar. He locked eyes on Catherine for a quick second and could see all the pain in her eyes, he looked down to see a beautifully decorated blue box in her hands. Steve told the mystery women something and she began walking to her car. Steve began walking toward Catherine before he got a call from Danny and rushed back inside. This was the last time Catherine saw Steve.
Catherine quickly ran away from the parking lot then caught a taxi back to the hotel. She was very sad, but didn't let this affect her mini vacation. She spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool and watching the sunset. She then went to the restaurant along the walkway by the koi ponds and enjoyed the sound of the live music and ocean. Since it was Friday, there were fireworks. She watched the fireworks and finished her steak dinner. She decided to take a walk along the ocean. While walking, she began to reminisce about the memories she shared with Steve.
She then started to imagine her son playing in the sand, and her playing with him. Steven was grilling dinner and put the steaks inside. They went back outside and Steve hugged Catherine from behind and kissed her head. Catherine leaned on him and they watched the sunset as a family.
Catherine snapped back to reality and noticed that she was crying. She decided to go back to her room and rest. The next day she was going to go to the north shore.
Steve's POV:
Steve rushed into headquarters to see what was the case. The team finished the complicated case early in the afternoon. Steve ordered everyone to go home and take the day off. Once everyone was out, he started looking at the security cameras to figure out where Catherine went. After a while, he couldn't figure out where she went so he went home.
"Hi, Hailey. How is the baby?"
"Hi, Steve. He is great, thank you so much for letting us stay here. Nahele and I appreciate it."
"No problem. You and Nahele know that this house is always open to your family."
"Thank you, again! Nahele should be bringing some dinner home."
"I don't mean to bug in… who called yesterday?"
"Oh that… it was probably a spam caller haha."
"But the man asked for you specifically."
"He did? What did he sound like?"
"I don't remember, but he sounded like he was in the military."
"Oh, I think I know who it is."
Back to the present…
Catherine always thought about visiting Steve again and introducing Steven to him, but she didn't want to ruin his life by bringing a child into his life. Steven never wondered about his father until he started preschool at the age of three. He saw all his friends have two parents come to pick them and oftentimes his friends would talk about their parents, especially their fathers. Many times, Catherine has picked up Steven and she could tell he was anxious and nervous. Once they got home, Catherine asked Steven if there's something he wanted to ask her. Steven nodded then asked "where is my daddy, mommy. All my friends have a daddy so why don't I get one?" That sentence broke her heart into pieces. Catherine led him to the couch and they sat down. As Catherine explained to him again that his father was out saving people's lives and he really wished he could come back during the day to spend time with him, she was thinking back to 4 years ago, when she went to Hawaii to tell Steve.
Steven was calling Catherine and snapped her back into reality, he noticed all the tears on her face and asked if she was okay. Catherine told him that she was okay, but Steven apologized and got tissues off the table for her. After that day, Steven stopped asking about his father, but at school, he told his friends that his father was a superhero. At a birthday party for Steven's best friend, Aiden, Steven was playing with his friends while Catherine was talking to all the other parents. Aiden's mom, Katie, was Catherine's best friend and wanted Catherine to start dating again. Katie was the only person besides Kono and Chin outside her family that knew Steve was Steven's father. Katie knew that Catherine wasn't over Steve yet and wanted Catherine to be happier. Peter, Steven's other friend, told his mom about what Steven said in school about his father. Katie told Catherine and she felt guilty for depriving her son of his father.
Wil Catherine listen to Katie?
