Bell made his way back home, while he hadn't stayed out too long he could feel himself growing tired. He had spent very little time in the dungeons recently and that fact showed. He was getting used to the earlier nights. His pace was brisk, worried about the conversation he overheard. While it may have been a coincidence he had to be sure. If something had happened while he wasn't about, wouldn't Hestia no doubt kill him? But worse he'd never forgive himself.
'I should have gone with her… I could have met up with Aiz afterwards, I'm sure it wouldn't have been a bother.' He was tempted to pick up the pace but he decided not to.
"Still she must capable if she injured him like that. But I guess I should know." He chuckled at his own joke. While he had received the odd slap or strike from the girl but even then he hadn't tried anything.
He thought back to the man's final words. " His pride was hurt nothing more, I doubt he'd be stupid enough to try anything. She's still a god even if the circumstances have changed somewhat. The guild will no doubt get involved should she be harmed… But I won't allow that!"
He was almost back and just in time. The cold winds started to pick up and dark clouds filled the night's sky. Another storm no doubt. He didn't feel like spending another night walking in the rain. So he sprinted back. It didn't take long and he just managed to get indoors before it started raining. The sound of thunder roared in the distance. A great boom that echoed far and wide. It had been a while since Bell heard such a sound.
'Bad omens' He thought closing the door. He looked up the roof had seen better days. Holes that were originally small had grown quite large due to the increase in bad weather. He would no doubt have to think about fixing it, or paying someone to do so. However, even now it was an expense he couldn't afford.
He looked to his makeshift bed and sighed. 'Guess I won't be sleeping on that tonight!' Part of the roof he had been sleeping under was starting to fall away. As such water started to pour down from the roof above.
'I hope the goddess won't mind…' Before he'd just fall asleep by mistake only to find himself lying on the couch. However, this time was different. It wasn't just Hestia but Artemis. That single fact made things… Difficult.
"I'll just apologise and see if Welf can help me fix it later. It may not be the best option but its will be cheaper." With that Bell headed downstairs.
He slowly walked downstairs, he waited at the door trying to gauge if the two were still awake or not. He waited before knocking.
"Goddess I'm back." He said loudly but not enough to wake them i case they were asleep.
"Ohh Bell please come in it okay." Bell let out a sigh of relief that his goddess was still awake. He pushed the door open, and to his surprise was welcomed by a mess of feathers. He stood quietly trying to work out what the hell happened. He turned to look at his goddess how was laid out on the bed next to a sleeping Artemis.
"Haha sorry about the mess, things kind of got out of hand." She said as she got to her feet, and made her way over to her child. "Sooo Bell have a goodnight." She gave him a knowing look and it became obvious that Artemis told her.
"Haha sorry…" He didn't need to hide it, better to just apologise now and get the rant over with. But to Bell's shock, Hestia just shrugged.
"No need to apologise Bell. I can't stop you from enjoying yourself… Even if it is with Wallenstein." She tried to play it off but the whip-like change when she mentioned Aiz was evident. "Still I suppose you've earned it after your heroic actions earlier."
She brought him into a hug. "I'm proud of you Bell, I was right to trust Artemis in your care." Bell meanwhile was slowly being suffocated by Hestia's embrace.
"G-god-dess I… I can't b-rea-th…" Bell said with what little breath he had left. Hestia quickly let go and as he nearly dropped to the floor. 'Even monsters give me an easier time…"
He quickly got to his feet and Hestia's smile was a good sign. 'Well, I can safely say that nothing bad happened.' He sighed relief and nodded. "It was nothing I was just glad I was nearby when it happened."
He knew that it was a lucky break. He didn't know she was up there and worse still, if he hadn't had gone for his walk he probably never would. Luckily he was and while his goddess thought he was keeping an eye on her.
"But to be honest we got lucky. If I hadn't have been there…" Hestia shook her head.
"It was my fault for not following her. I thought it best to let her have some time to think things over." She paused looking over to her sleeping friend. "I can't blame you for what happened Bell but I can thank you for saving my friends life."
Tears started to form in Hestia's eyes but she didn't let it get past that as she quickly wiped them away and smiled to her child.
"She really is grateful you know?"
Bell nodded. "Yeah, she said…" Bell wanted to tell her about what happened earlier but he thought it best not to. He knew to bring it up would only cause issues, If Artemis wanted to tell Hestia she'd have done so.
"Yes, she mentioned you two had a talk, care to enlighten me?" Hestia was still annoyed not being able to get information from her friend. But this was Bell and she could read him like an open book.
Bell meanwhile froze up. He knew he couldn't say the specifics but he could at least try to sate his goddess's endless curiosity. "We were just getting to know each other I guess you could say…" He couldn't lie to her, but she didn't ask for specifics so he didn't feel bad.
'The same answer from him as well, if Bell isn't gonna tell me i can't force it…' She just nodded. "Well, Bell it seems that charm of yours is working wonders." She said a device smile forming on her face.
"Ughh I don't think I follow?"
Hestia turned to look at Artemis. "I mean you've made a good impression on her. Which is a good thing. Ive never seen her speak so highly of a man before. So consider yourself honoured Bell." In reality, this would be the second time but she wasn't gonna let that one slip.
"She even told me that your planning to show her around the city which is sweet of you Bell. Might I assume that you're enjoying her company?" Bell just nodded.
"Good good, at the very least you should enjoy it while it lasts. If she does decide to leave I won't stop her. But if she does decide to stay well I'd at least want you two to have gotten to know each other well enough." Bell smiled
"Of course goddess ill do my best." He said bowing which caused Hestia to laugh.
"Your the man of first Bell, I don't doubt you for a second," Hestia spoke still chuckling at her only child. It wasn't until the sound of thunder roared that Hestia noticed Bell drop his head.
"What kind of Goddess would I be if I made you sleep upstairs Bell. Don't worry you can sleep down here, just do me a favour if you wake up before her try to not stare…" Hestia said in a teasing tone which caused Bell to blush.
"I-I won't…"
Hestia smiled and head to the bathroom to clean herself off. She was still covered in feathers after losing to Artemis earlier. Meanwhile, Bell was left alone but he was glad that he was able to go to sleep with proper shelter. He made his way to the coach and preparing to lay down until he heard the soft sounds from the bed.
He made an attempt not to look. But his curiosity got the better of him. He looked at the blue-haired beauty sleeping soundly. Cuddled into the covers and pillows a sense of bliss. The days trouble no doubt a distant thought and did not disturb her.
"She did mention she was having bad dreams… I'm glad that's not the case tonight." He said smiling. He pulled the covers over her shoulders and let out a slight yawn. Happy she was safe and calm he made his way over to the coach. It didn't take long for him to start to drift off. His mind filled with thoughts about the day to come.
Hestia meanwhile had stood at the door of the bathroom watching her child from a distance. A large smile formed on her face. "Really now Bell you are such a gentleman…"
…
It was a quiet morning, the birds' songs could be heard from the window and a faint ray of light illuminated the room. Bell could feel the warm ray hitting him causing him to wake from his sleep. It was a strange morning for him. He still felt tired and rugged, which just annoyed him.
'I wonder if anyone else is up'. He thought as he sat up and looked around. When he realised both Hestia and Artemis were still asleep, he quickly turned away remembering his goddess words.
"Don't need to get myself in any trouble." sighed resting his head back against the cushion, unsure of what he should do.
'Should I just go back to sleep… It's not like I've got anything else to do till they wake up and might keep me from getting accused of something.' He dwindled on the thought for a few minutes before shaking his head.
He pushed himself up and off the couch and got to his feet. After a quick stretch, he decided to give himself a look over. He hadn't noticed before but he had slept in his clothes and no doubt smelled from the previous day.
"Guess I should get a bath…" He said before making his way to the bathroom. He looked out the window and judged that it was still early in the morning.
"I suppose I'll make breakfast after I'm done. Goddess has been working non-stop and earned a treat." He quickly grabbed one of the towels from the shelf and entered the bathroom and locked the door behind him.
While Bell was cleaning himself another started to wake from her slumber. "ahhhh" an unlikely sound to come from the former goddess but fitting considering the calm sleep she had enjoyed for once. The warmth of the light was but a cold breeze compared to the warmth of her covers. She ignored her urge to open her eyes instead of hiding them in the fabric.
"Uhh, Artemis no fair…" A quiet mumble came from her sleeping friend. Before she could comprehend what she was on about her warm cocoon was ripped from her body.
"Eh?" Artemis shot up looking to the thief that stole her enjoyment. No surprise it was the same person she called a friend. While deeply annoyed she didn't feel the need to fight for it back, after all, she was awake now.
She stretched her arms while she allowed her eyes to adjust to the light. Once she was able to see without strain she got to her feet and noticed the shabby bed on the couch. 'Hmm, I guess Bell came back after all.' She thought he'd stay out all night and probably the morning. She still felt bad for taking up so much of his time the day prior.
'And today as well, I really hope he doesn't mind.' She felt bad that she could potentially be taking him away from other important matters. One thing she realised was he hadn't been to the dungeon while she was her. No doubt he was taking a hit in both his training and income.
"I'll promise to leave him alone after today!" She was getting used to him being around. Even though it had only been a few days he just seemed to be there even when she didn't want him. At least that's what she thought.
*Flashback*
Artemis could still feel the small pain in her chest but choose to ignore it, such things didn't bother her and it wasn't going to start now. She turned her head trying to get an idea of where she was. It didn't take long for her to remember the road, she remembered a few of the stores and quickly came up with a path back to the church.
"Seriously this city really earns its name, it's a maze in and of itself. How do people ever get used to this."
She had been walking for a few minutes but suddenly realised she wasn't heading the direction she thought she was.
'Ohh I could have sworn that it was this way but none of this looks familiar... I must have taken a wrong turn at some point.' Having looked around she could tell she wasn't in a very safe part of town. The street was dark and plenty of buildings were ever abandoned or damaged. This was just a taste of what she walked into.
'I can feel it the stares… but I can't see them. It's almost like their all around me!"
She took a step back. She knew she wasn't too far from the main street. A quick sprint and she'll be out of trouble if only it was that simple.
When she attempted to do so she soon found said path blocked. Three men and it was clear they had followed her. She quickly looked back and it became clear she was surrounded and she would have to take her chances.
'Damn it… I wish Bell was here right now!' She didn't dwindle on the small hope. She could handle herself but not against this many. She looked at a couple of them and realised something.
'Swords not daggers like the rest, armour is better quality… Adventures just my luck!' The situation had gone from bad to worse. Even her skills fighting alongside her Familia were nothing in comparison.
She briskly walked up to them but ignored the obvious looks they were giving her. Before she could pass the middle man raised his hand stopping her.
"With all due respects might, I ask you to move aside." She spoke loud and calmly avoiding having to look at the brute.
All she got was a laugh.
"So well-spoken yet I don't even get a please, for such a pretty face you really don't know when to have manners."
He moved closer and lowered his head so he was level with her. She made every attempt to look past him.
"What's a pretty face like yours doing in a place like this? Perhaps you're lost?"
Artemis didn't give any information that he was right, but it was obvious they would have known.
"Hey were just here to help no need to give us the cold shoulder. Besides once we get you to safety perhaps you can help us." He moved toward her and attempted to touch her ass.
She wasn't gonna let him have the chance. In her moment of anger, she swung at the man while his guard was down. Her speed made up for her lack of strength and helped bring him to the ground.
'If you'd have tried that alone I would have broken your arm!' she didn't have time to say it allowed as she now had an opening.
In their confusion, the two standing guards had shown more concern for their friend. Allowing her to quickly flee to the streets.
'Finally damn that was close!' She looked back. While it had been quite the scare she couldn't help but smile.
'That felt good…' she looked at her hand and quickly headed in the opposite direction before they chased after her.
Once she was sure she was clear and out of danger she asked a passerby for directions and quickly hurried back to the church.
*Flashback over*
"Even though I was able to get out the situation im sure it wouldn't have happened if Bell was around…"
It was then she thought she heard the sounds of rushing water. Still, in her sleepy state, she moved over to the bathroom. But it was quiet.
"I must have imagined it… Still guess I should freshen up." She moved her hand to the door and attempted to open it only to be greeted with resistance.
She assumed the door was just old and stiff so she tried again with a bit more force.
"One moment." A voice called from the other side.
Artemis realised this too late as the door was pulled open with her still attached to it. In a moment of panic, she let go and pulled herself back.
She managed to keep her footing but the sudden surprise left her confused and she didn't hear Bell speaking to her.
"Huh?" Bell was taken aback when he realised who it was.
'Don't know why I'm surprised? Hestia would have realised it was me inside.' He looked away and moved aside.
"It's free now if you'll excuse me." He moved past her and turned the corner before she could say anything.
Artemis just stood quietly as the boy passed her. A tinge of embarrassment on her face. She quickly entered the bathroom and locked the door.
'How embarrassing…'
Bell walked over towards the wardrobe and quickly picked out a white shirt. It was a while since he had worn it but it was one of the few shirts that he owned that he didn't use for the dungeon.
"I hope this still fits?" He quickly moved over to the mirror. Luckily he still managed to fit into it.
It was strange for him, he usually wore black because it stood out against his white hair. He was never sure when it came to clothes.
"Ahhh morning!" A loud voice called from behind him and Bell turned to see his goddess stretching and rubbing her eyes.
"Morning goddess," Bell said cheerfully giving her a smile.
Hestia smiled. "Even on your days off you still wake up this early? Or are you just looking forward to your date?" Bell froze up.
"Ugh w-what no it's…It's…" Bell fumbled to find his words and Hestia chuckled at the boy's flustered state.
"Ohh Bell I'm only joking, I know you're just being helpful." Hestia continued to chuckle as Bell returned to getting dressed. It soon dawned on her that someone was missing.
"Where's Artemis?"
Bell pointed in the direction of the bathroom. Hestia looked and gave a nod.
"I hope nothing happened while I was asleep." She attempted to imply something but Bell being Bell just let fly over his head.
"No, I just passed her before she went in," Bell said as he finished getting dressed. Hestia just shrugged.
'Just like him to be so oblivious.'
"So what's your plan for the day Bell?" Hestia finally got out of bed and stretched her arms again.
"Ohh well I was thinking a quick tour of the city then finish at the tower. She mentioned wanting to get a few things…"
Hestia smiled. She may be working today but with a bit of luck, she could get away for a couple of hours and join them.
"That sounds like a nice day out. Why do you never do anything like that for me?" Her semi-serious tone caused Bell to drop his head.
"I'm sorry goddess next time I promise," Bell said bowing his head in shame.
Hestia walked up to him and brought him into a hug. "I don't mind really, just promise one thing Bell?"
"That you stop by and see me at work. If Artemis isn't enjoying herself ill have to punish you!"
Her warning made Bell sweat, he was already dreading upsetting Artemis in some way but now he had to worry about Hestia to.
"I'll do my best." He could only pray that nothing happened while they were out.
The two continued to talk and Bell made a quick breakfast, nothing special. Some fried eggs and bread. He offered Hestia somehow quickly devoured it.
"It's a real treat when you cook Bell you should do it more often." Hestia said as she finished polishing off the eggs.
"Haha we'll I don't normally have the time but on my days off I'll happily cook for you.
It dawned on Hestia that Artemis would be finishing up soon. "Bell! I don't want to rush you but don't you think you should be else were for the time being?"
Her question confused him as he stood holding the frying pan in hand. She shifted her head in the direction of the bathroom.
"We're you hoping to see her in just a towel?" She gave him a stern look and Bell quickly put the pan down.
"No no no I just forgot I'll head upstairs now…" and just like that he quickly left the room. Hestia shook her head and turned to the bathroom.
"You can come out now Artemis he's gone upstairs." It took a moment but Artemis slowly opened the door and popped her head out.
"What's wrong don't trust me?" Hestia was still sitting at the table watching her friend be far to cautious.
"You know my thoughts on men seeing me like this…" she came out grasping the towel. The slightly damp fabric stuck to her body and curves.
"Worried he's gonna walk in? Because he might…"
Just as Artemis was gonna loosen her grip Hestia had to say something like that. The moment she heard that she tightened her hold on the towel tenfold.
Hestia laughed and got to her feet. Teasing the poor girl was her favourite pastime. Plus it was pay back for all the times in heaven.
"I'm only joking, he wouldn't dare walk-in here without my permission. He knows it'd be his death if he did."
Hestia reassured her but Artemis still refused to drop her guard. Hestia gave a devilish smile as she moved behind her.
"Ahh… Hestia what are you doing?!"
Artemis jumped out here skin as she felt a pinch on her side. Turning around to look at her friend how was trying to hold back from laughing.
"Ohh lighten up Artemis your always on edge. Come on lighten up."
Artemis seemed to refuse her request and Hestia responded.
"No now Hestia let go I have to get ready hehe hahaha Hestia stop!"
Hestia started to tickle Artemis which instantly got the stubborn goddess to drop her guard.
'Curse her!' She quickly retaliated dropping her towel and launching her own assault.
The pairs battle lasted a few minutes with Artemis finally getting the upper hand. Leave a tired out Hestia.
"No fair…" Hestia said puffing out her cheeks.
"That's what living a lazy lifestyle will get you." Artemis mocked the defeated goddess while making her way over to the small dresser.
"I don't fancy putting my self in danger. Besides you were always the wild type." She admired her friend. She was charming, strong and beautiful, it was the reason so many people wanted her.
She sat up and watched as she pulled a variety of clothes out. Hestia smiled.
'On any other occasion, she'd have thrown on the first thing she grabbed without a care in the world. It's nice to she at least cares about her appearances.'
Artemis mused through the outfits she had bought a few days prior. Each was different in its on way. The first was a long light blue dress that went from her shoulders to the bottom of her knees. It's was simple and graceful and showed very little skin, something she personally liked.
Next was a simple a purple top and shorts combo. The weather was nice today but Artemis couldn't bring herself consider it a particular choice.
Finally was her usual white and blue outfit that she attempted to recreate. She wasn't able to get a perfect copy but made do. Her top was a dark blue and the boots were simple brown but weren't as long.
It was at this moment Hestia stepped in the picture. She had watched from a distance and couldn't help but get involved.
'If she's gonna give it some thought I might as well help her. Besides Bells earned a treat. Seeing how beautiful she can be might open his eyes a little.'
"What's wrong can't decide?" Artemis turned to her friend, who now was looking over her shoulder.
"I don't know… I just don't feel comfortable…"
Hestia shook her head to think that a few weeks prior she was head over heels for Bell and open to the idea of love. Now she was back to her usual self.
"You shouldn't be. Your one of the kindest, strongest people I know. Besides you've got the looks and body to put most girls to shame."
Artemis let a small smile at her friend's words.
'She may have changed but deep downs she's still the same as always.'
"Come on Artemis Ill help you. Can't have you walking around looking like another adventure. Not after the effort Bells put in."
"He has?" The comment left her confused and a little conflicted.
'Is she just saying that to get me to care? But if he has put in the effort then…'
She looked over the clothes on the bed a second time, then turned to her friend for advice. Hestia smiled in response.
"Come now you'd look great in any of these. But I won't have you in your regular clothes!"
Just like that, the safest option left the table and she was left with only two options. She let out an audible humph, getting a look from her friend.
"You wanted my opinion, didn't you? Put a little effort in! Now I think you only have one real choice."
She held up the light blue summer dress. A smile on her face as she handed it to her friend.
"Now you put that on and ill help you do your hair."
Artemis held the dress in front of her and looked to her friend with a mixture of uncertainty and doubt.
"Make an effort, come on. I'm sure Bell will be happy."
"And I care because?"
Hestia shrugged. "Don't care if you do it, or don't. But all I know is my precious child has been running around this city taking care of you for the last few days."
She sat on the bed and crossed her arms.
"All I'm asking is for a little effort. So shut up. Get dress and let me fix that bed hair."
Artemis was about to retort but a stern gaze from Hestia left her speechless.
'She really has changed…'
Bell waited upstairs for a decent while. He spent most the time examining the damaged roof. It was worse then he thought. The original small holes had grown significantly with the bad weather. The wooden beams were started to rot and warp and a substantial amount of tiles and boards had fallen to grown below.
"I don't like the looks of that beam… I doubt it would hold up under any more pressure!" He sighed
"I best make a stop at the builders and get a quote. I can't fix that even with Welf's help."
He knew this wasn't going to be cheap but the last thing he needed was for the roof to cave in. Not only was it dangerous but it would mean they'd have no home.
He did his best to clean up the mess, being careful not to dirty his clothes. Last thing he needed to find another outfit.
'This is what I get for not buying any new clothes when I had the chance.'
After he finished he sat down on one of the dry benches. Luckily the weather was on point. A clear day not a cloud in the sky, the warm sun beating down.
He breathed in the fresh air letting it flow through his body. He relaxed in sun and waited. Luckily he didn't need to wait too long.
"Right Bell I'm heading out, I'm already running late as it is! Artemis is just finishing getting ready so would you mind making her some breakfast."
Bell nodded. "Of course Goddess ill make a start on it now."
"Thank you, Bell I can trust her in you're hands. I've given her some money so don't worry about spending anything. I promise I'll pay you back for the last few days."
Bell shook his head. "It's fine goddess you don't have to I don't mind."
Hestia raised her hands. "Sometimes you're too kind Bell. But I wouldn't have you any other way."
She gave him a quick hug and hurried to the door.
"Ohh and one more thing she's put in the effort today so be sure to compliment her. Have a nice day!"
She shouted the last part as she sprinted out the door. Leaving Bell alone with his thoughts.
'She's made and effort? But why it's not like its a d…' he didn't finish that thought instead of heading downstairs.
He knocked on the door. "Artemis its Bell, may I come in?"
Silence.
He was about to knock again but stopped when he heard a voice.
"Oh yes of course." He must have startled her which would explain the delayed response.
He opened the door and out the corner of his eye, he was graced with a breathtaking sight.
Artemis was stood in the corner looking in the mirror with a face that could be described as unsure.
Bell looked her over. A faint tint of red gracing his cheeks. The first thing that stood out was her blue dress which was both elegant and cute. It fit her perfectly completing her natural beauty and curvy figure. She also wore a pair of light brown sandals on her feet. But Bell found himself admiring her legs more than her choice of footwear.
'Focus Bell focus! Don't let your mind be clouded by those thoughts. Forget what the old man taught you!'
Once he forced himself to look up, he found himself staring for a different reason.
Her face was picture perfect. Her fair palish skin seemed to radiate in the light. Her long blue hair was partially braided and tired at the end with a small gold clasp. And her usual two bangs at the front. It was at this moment she turned to look at him.
Bell gulped. Like so many times In these last few days, he found her large emerald green eyes staring at him. And like so many times before he was drawn in and ensnared by their gaze.
A short silence formed between the two. Not a sound was made. Bell felt his mind go blank for a moment as it tried to process the image Bell was seeing.
Artemis on the other was quietly regretting letting Hestia talk her into this. Her head was filled with doubt and confusion. All of them stems from the boy in front of her.
'I shouldn't care what he thinks. It's not like I care about his opinion… So why do I feel anxious all of a sudden?'
It was Bell that broke the silence first.
"Y-you look amazing."
Artemis felt her eyes widen at his comment.
"W-what?!"
Artemis could no longer look him in the face as she felt her embarrassment start to build up as she turned away.
Bell felt like he upset her with his comment. Unsure of what to do he bowed his head.
"S-sorry it just came out!"
It took a moment but she brought herself to speak.
"D-did you mean it?"
Bell slightly confused by her question wasn't sure if he had misheard her.
"I'm sorry what?"
Artemis looked at him. Into his blood-red eyes. Allowing herself to lose herself.
"I asked if you meant what you said?"
Bell wasn't gonna lie it was impossible. The fact alone was undeniable. She was stunningly gorgeous. Bell knew his grandfather would haunt him till the end of his days if he heard Bell deny that fact.
"Y-yes I meant it you look beautiful!"
He had to almost shout the last part just to be sure he actually said it. He could feel the embarrassment almost immediately. His face was almost as red as his eyes and he could swear he heard his grandfather clapping from beyond the grave.
Artemis had her back to him. It was strange to her. His comment resonated with her. Her mind replayed it over and over. The fact she wanted to confirm it was bad enough. But more then that was she started to enjoy it.
'What is this feeling? Joy?'
"T-thank you Bell."
Bell was still standing in disbelief. Again part of him believed he had misheard her, but the other part of him was admiring the newfound shyness he saw her reveal. But he didn't want to push his luck, smiling he went to the kitchen to prepare her something for breakfast.
'Remember Bell she's still a goddess. She's a goddess that could probably kill you. She's the friend of your goddess.' Bell repeated this in his head over and over as if a warning to himself not to think of her as anything else.
'But she is really cute' he failed!
The rest of the morning was met with silence. Whether it be due to the previous conversation or a lack of things to say to one another. One thing was clear you could cut the tension with a knife.
While Artemis finished her breakfast, Bell was cleaning up. He was taking his time trying to avoid unnecessary eye contact with the girl. Thankfully for him, she was of the same mindset. She had gotten into a habit of reading something while she ate. The last four days had shown she had a key eye for books. While Bell had a large selection of tale of heroes long gone or combat manuals his collection lacked variety.
'I suppose I could show her the book stores, I've been meaning to see if they have anything new in. I wonder what kind of books she likes to read?'
The fact he was thinking about the day ahead showed he was running out of work to keep him distracted. He knew this could last all day. But he was worried.
'Curse my upbringing, how is it I'm fine around Hestia and Lili but I can't keep my head straight around her and Aiz? I love you grandfather but sometimes I can't help but regret listening to everything you said!' He sighed, placing the dirty clothes into the wash pile.
Artemis noticed this and proceeded to mark her place in her book. Only to realise she hadn't made much progress. It's not that she wasn't enjoying it but simply the quiet was starting to get to her.
'I hope this isn't gonna be like this all day. Won't be much of a guide if he doesn't talk.'
She placed her book down and looked at the boy in front of her. He was avoiding eye contact with her. Not that was a bad thing, however, she gave him a simple smile.
"Are you not gonna eat anything Bell?" she was semi curious why he hadn't eaten with her but she was using it to start a conversation.
Bell was still in his own world, and it took him a minute to realise she was talking to him. He shook his head. "Ohh no I ate with Goddess beforehand. How was it?"
"It was delicious thank you." Bell smiled happily. She had enjoyed it. He reached down to grab her plate but she quickly grabbed it before standing.
"Ughh is something wrong?" Bell scratched his head it wasn't until she moved to the sink that he caught on.
"Ooh, there's no need for you to do that I'll see to it…"
Artemis shook her head and smiled. "Please Bell you've done enough these last few days for me. The least I can do is wash up after myself."
"But you're a guest and and…"
Artemis turned to him. "I'm more of a freeloader then a guest. Plus it's one plate what have I told you about putting us on pedestals?"
Bell felt himself on the losing side of this, he bowed his head in shame as he watched her. Artemis washed and dried her plate before putting it away, she laughed when she saw the morally confused by her actions.
"Tell me is Hestia this lazy or do you just like doing chores?"
Bell let out a small chuckle. "Well goddess is always working so hard and its the least I can do?"
The first part made her laugh uncontrollably. "Hahaha Hestia working hard hahaha!".
Bell was completely confused by the sudden burst of laughter coming from Artemis. "Ugh, what's so funny?"
Artemis saw that Bells tone had changed and his confused look. 'It's obvious he holds her highly.'
"Forgive me, In heaven, she was quite lazy, she rarely left her temple and when she did it was because I made her!"
Bell didn't know how to take this information. He had always seen her putting in as much effort as him, that fact alone made it hard to believe.
"Still it's nice to see her kindness hasn't faltered. If I could say one good thing about the old Hestia was that she always had a kind heart."
Bell could see a tear in her eye, but she quickly wiped it away. "I can happily say she's changed for the better and I believe your part of the reason."
Bell shook his head. He had changed from meeting her that day, she gave him a home and a life worth living.
"She's done more for me since I've arrived here then I've ever done for her. I can't say I changed her in any way." Bell believed this more than anything. That from the moment he met her she had been the same kind goddess as the day they met.
Artemis moved closer to Bell, her conversation with Hestia the night before allowed her to see Hestia's growth. She could speak nothing but good things about the boy in front of her. Such high praise didn't come easily and she was starting to understand why he earned it.
"Maybe, maybe not, to be honest, I can only judge from what I've been told. "She really does admire you Bell, your kindness, determination to get stronger and your willingness to help others."
Bell could feel his cheeks warm up from her praise and kind words. She placed her hands behind her back and looked up at the small window.
"My time here has been a bag of mixed beans. My future is uncertain and my path is still foggy. But I'd be lying if I said a small part of me didn't enjoy it and…"
She paused, her conversation with Hestia told her all she needs to know about the boy. Whatever doubts she had about him had been squashed.
"And I have you to thank for that Bell."
He couldn't see his face, but he could tell he was blushing, the heat alone was a sure-fire sign.
'Why are you embarrassed? Your a man aren't you?' The voice of his grandfather echoed in his head. Almost as if he was teasing him from beyond the grave.
"Y-your W-welcome…" He was done, words failed him and he enjoyed the praise. But it was short-lived as he realised how much time had passed.
"I think we should get going, we've got a lot to see after all".
"Yes yes, we have."
With that, the two made their way upstairs.
Bell was thankful for the nice weather. Not a cloud in the sky and the warmth made him all the more thankful for not wearing his usual outfit. The two had been walking around for a good few hours. Bell had been sure to give her a proper tour.
He decided to give her a tour of each district from the very beginning he had admitted that he didn't explore as much of the city as he should have. But he looked forward to seeing new places. Artemis on the other hand listened to him with great interest. The districts had there owned little charm to them, but she understood that Bell had only limited knowledge. They had already explored the market a couple of days prior and had agreed to return later in the day.
Bell made sure to keep them on a steady pace. He made sure that she saw the main areas, such as the coliseum, casino, guildhall and the adventure graveyard. The two took a short break to pay their respects to those who died.
"It's so sad, to think all these brave souls looking for fame and fortune or to have a better life…" As Artemis walked between the graves, each one reminded her that she didn't know the fate of her Familia. She prayed for the dead and prayed for her Familia's safety.
Bell watched. He had come here a couple of times and paid his respects. He remembered the graves hidden away, the ones Hermes showed him. He remembered his words, how no one would remember them and that they'd be forgotten to time before too long. Bell prayed for each of them. Even though he didn't know them he felt it was only fair. Once he was done he quickly returned to Artemis.
"Are you ready to go?" he asked, receiving a simple nod. The two left the dead to rest in peace as they returned to crowded lively streets.
Bell did his best to avoid the entertainment district for obvious reasons. He knew from Welf what kind of area it was even if Bell hadn't seen it. He thought it best not to show Artemis it or better yet avoid talking about it altogether. Didn't need to give her the wrong idea.
The day had been going smoothly but Bell worried about their time. She would be able to explore on her own later if she really wanted to. It was around early afternoon when they reached the guildhall. Bell was going to say hi to Eina but he was told she wasn't there today. He had very little reason after that to stick around.
"Well that's almost everywhere, besides the tower, of course, you've now seen the sites of this city. What do you think?"
He wasn't sure if he was any good as a guide. Hell even he was pushing it in certain areas. The fact he failed to recognise the casino until someone pointed it out to them showed his lack of knowledge.
"I can say with complete confidence I'm still confused as to when we started." The two laughed.
"But still thank you Bell you may not make a great tour guide but you do make for a great company." Bell rubbed the back of his head.
"You too. So is there anywhere you'd like to go or would you like to get something to eat first?"
She took a moment to think, they had been wandering for a while now and the idea of a sit-down and lunch sounded just too tempting. Bell thought they could get a quick snack and eat at one of the benches.
"So we've got to go to the market so you can grab what you need and the stores in the tower and I promised to visit the goddess when we get there."
Artemis nodded, finishing her small lunch box. With their short break over the two head towards the market. On the way Bell could have sworn he felt Artemis getting closer as they got closer and closer to the main market. He wanted to say he was imagining it but the fact she was basically hiding behind his back was a clear indication something was wrong.
He looked over his shoulder, she was looking at the ground no doubt at his feet so she could see where he was, but it took him a moment to realise why. Just like the day prior she was getting a large number of looks off the men. Even more than before. It was obvious he wasn't the only one that liked her new dress. It didn't take too long before Artemis started tugging his shirt in the direction of a quiet side road.
'I can't believe she's having this much trouble with people staring at her. I guess been isolated from cities has its downsides.'
"You okay? We can come back later when it's quieter if you'd like?"
'Seems he worked it out…'
She took a deep breath and rested her head against the wall behind her. Being stared at so much was both annoying and embarrassing. She was having such a nice day and this one little thing was spoiling it.
"I'm sorry i should have realised sooner, we'll come back later." Artemis looked at him as he suggested that they return later. Part of her felt defeated and that she was running away.
"No!" Bell stopped mid-motion.
"I'm fine. I just felt a little light-headed so I wanted to go into the shade." She tried to come up with a believable excuse but Bell wasn't gonna fall for it.
"If you don't want to tell me what's wrong, that's fine, I know you are uncomfortable when larger groups stare at you, especially the men."
Artemis should have realised it was pointless to lie at that point. "I'm sorry Bell, I was having such a nice day, I didn't want to spoil it."
She continued to stare at the floor, it wasn't until Bell came close to her that she looked up.
'If only i could get them to stop staring at her… or?'
'Bell, Bell remember your training…' as almost a bolt of lighting hit Bell following his grandfather's words.
Bell crossed his fingers and prayed that what he was about to do worked. After he came to terms with the plan he quickly grabs Artemis attention.
"Come on!"
"Huh, give me a sec ahh!"
Bell didn't give her a second before he grabbed her hand and started pulling her out into the street. She wasn't expecting him to suddenly start pulling her along but once she regained her composure.
"Hey what was that about?" She tried to move her hand but he held it firmly not letting her go. Artemis stopped which got Bell to turn around.
"Sorry, it was the only thing I could think of to get you to stop worrying."
Artemis sighed "You could have given me a little warning." she looked at his hand, it was just a bit larger then hers, the skin was rough and hard but he seemed to gentle even when he was pulling her along.
"If I had told you it wouldn't have worked so well". He smiled but she was still noticeably confused.
"I don't understand, what's changed…" It soon dawned on her, she looked around. The eyes from before seemed to slowly dissipate and the few that were looking at them was more due to the strange display. In fact, she hadn't noticed due to her shock.
"But why…" Her noticeable confusion made Bell chuckle. For once his grandfather advice came in handy.
*Flashback*
"Bell come her I have something I want to tell you?"
Bell walked over to his grandfather. His morning routine finished and he was prepared for a long ass lecture or perverted story.
"Yes, grandfather?"
"Bell there will come a time when you finally have your harem when that day comes you'll have to deal with others looking at your girls."
Bell rolled his eyes, he didn't understand his grandfather's obsession with Harems. But Bell humoured him.
"Remember we men have a code of honour, we know when somebody is off-limits."
"Yet you keep getting banned from the baths for peeking into the ladies bathroom". Bell kept having to save him from a savage beating.
Zeus felt the sweat drop. "I thought we agreed not to mention that besides one day you'll get the urge, my boy." Bell shook his head.
"Anyway if you think of seeing someone giving them a look just remind them who they belong to. It can be a kiss, slap on the ass… or I suppose in your case just holding hands."
'I can't believe this old geaser, does he ever take a day off from these perverted acts!'
"Yeah, sure grandfather thanks…"
*Flashback ends*
'I'm glad this actually worked… Still glad he mentioned hand-holding or I'd be joining him a lot sooner than I planned'
Artemis was unsure of how to feel about the situation, it seemed his plan worked, but something else was bothering her. His hand.
It was strange yet also comforting. It's not that she didn't like it more so she didn't understand why she did. It was strangely familiar to her, he had held it when he was leading her previous days, but she never noticed it till now.
Bell smiled, squeezing her hand to get her attention. "Shall we get going then, we've still got plenty of stalls to check out?"
Artemis, still in her own world, could only nod and as she felt her arm move on its own. His grip on her hand eased and the warmth it provided slowly disappeared.
"Hmm?" Bell turned to his side to see Artemis had caught up to him. She looked at the people around them, while it was only a few it seemed all them were directed at Bell now.
Bell could feel the gaze of jealous onlookers, he was glad their attention was on him and not her he could deal with it. Besides he didn't care. He felt a light squeeze from the girl beside him and he returned it.
Authors notes.
I have heard your requests I've made time and finally, chapter 31 is finished. Yes I know these seem to be taking longer to write than normal. But you try travelling the country without a laptop and only phone. You tried writing on a phone its not easy. But I've stopped being a cheap git and actually bought one so chapters shouldn't take a month to write. No promises I can be lazy.
Second announcement. I have to give thanks to webweasel for editing this chapter for me so with any luck their won't be as many problems. Grammar and spelling wise at lease :). Please do check him out if you haven't already. But I reckon most you have lol.
Finally the chapter. What can I say I like to go slow. Might pick up in the next couple of chapters and I have something big planned. I'd like to see peoples guesses. But yeah, for now, I'm building the relationship between Bell and Artemis. I personally I'm drawing a fine line when it comes to it. I don't want to go to fast with it but I also don't want this to be a 100+ chapter fanfic with almost 500k words lol. The movie doesn't show that build up and I get that it's only got so long but still. So what the movie didn't do I will.
Also on the comments about Artemis and her character. Let's be real the movie didn't really give her a true character. Hestia said it best shes way different then the person she knew. I'm not saying the growth wasn't there it was but I'm not dealing with movie Artemis I'm working with pre-movie Artemis. So I'm going off what people said and novels that came with the movie originally. Specifically one love.
Review time this is new!
Pix25: Thanks glad you enjoyed it. As for why Bell keeps getting into awkward moments. Fate and other things *wink wink*.
Random guest: Thankyou yes I understand the Bell and Artemis dynamic is heavily focused on Bell helping Artemis. I did this for a couple of reasons. Firstly the two are only just starting to get to know one another. Artemis is confused and Bell hasn't had a reason to need help. That won't be the case later on but all I can ask is you wait and trust me.
Webwesal: Haha you got landed with that job.
Random Guest 2: Slow your horse's buddy that time will come. For now just enjoy the little moments.
As always thanks for commenting I'm glad people like this story. My efforts aren't going to waste. Let me know what you thought of the chapter. Discord link at the end like always ;) ;)
